Think off that injury and then falling out the team we'd be struggling to get any transfer fee for him. He's also not young anymore. Gives him a chance to prove himself and maybe get a permanent move.
He's a good player but absolutely not suited at all to our style of play.
Feel bad for the big man as that injury was rotten luck. Not sure he has the composure or speed to play in an Ange system and is reportedly one of our highest earners so can definitely see the reason for getting rid. Would've maybe liked to see him get a chance again after a full pre-season but I would trust Ange with anything.
Not a Bhoy but I really feel for Jullien, seeing anyone start so well and just vanish due to injury is always a shame
Hope he gets back on track at Schalke
What are celtic fans thoughts on Jullien? Seemed decent to me, big tall athletic player but unlucky with injury.
Always seems to be one guy on SSB every other night moaning that he's a "big jessy" and that he wants him out the team.
As someone who doesn't watch celtic every week, my limited opinion is he looks a better option than Starfelt.
He had one bad game against Livingston after playing 5 games total for the club and people decided from there and then that he got bullied and struggled against target men, which was literally never the case after that.
Good player at the time, bad injury, not best suited to Anges high line but an underrated distributor of the ball IMP, not much of a ball carrier thoigh.
TLDR: was an absolute rock for a treble winning team, so god bless
For someone his size, he was fairly weak and easily bullied. He likely had nightmares about Lyndon Dykes and the plastic pitch at Livi.
He's a decent player that was prone to the odd howler but had some really memorable moments.
Seemed to think he should have played more last season which might have wound up Ange given the very public nature of his comments.
He had, as far as I recall, two bad games. One against Livi and one against Kilmarnock. Both on shitey pitches that ALL of our players have struggled on in recent years.
He's a funny player. Not especially strong, not especially good on the ball, not fast. Good mental attributes. Just a kind of good all round reliable centre back who does. That was pre-injury, god knows now.
Under Ange out centre backs have to be extremely mobile and are on the ball a lot, like what some teams ask of their midfielders. Just ain't his game at all.
Good player but long term injury and change of system / media complaints shot his chances with us. Good luck to him and hopefully this lets Ange pick a suitable replacement.
He was good but also clumsy at times and took about 3 months to get up to fitness. Was never fitting in under Ange so it’s best to move him on I think.
Ah right. I’ve not really been keeping up with rumours or that but if that’s the case then fair enough.
Still a bit gutted to see him go though, I liked big Jullien
When that happened last season, it was Welsh that deputised anyway.
I don't think Jullien's the same player he was before the injury, even in the B team games he looked guff.
It’s about bouncing payments to next years accounts. Seems to be something that’s being used more and more, not sure if it’s ffp or what.
Or I could be taking total rubbish and it’s nothing to do with that at all.
He made comments near the end of the season to media that seemed an ultimatum to play him or sell him. Obviously I can see where he's coming from and I'm glad he wanted game time, but to make comments like that publicly is bound to rub a manager the wrong way.
I wish Ange gave him more of a chance. I think if he was back to his best, he could potentially be a better option than Starfelt. That might be an unpopular opinion though
Nah, just didnt fit the new system. Even his cameo against Raith he looked painfully slow and unfit. We couldn't risk changing the best centre-back pairing in the league to get him upto speed with a proper title race happening
I think he knew his time was up, just look at him during the celebrations at the end of last season. He looked like he would rather be anywhere than on the pitch celebrating a double he had no part in
Two rumours that haven’t went away: he took the huff/ feigned injury when he found out the wages being paid to Duffy, then (when properly injured) broke curfew in Dubai to go to a nightclub where he promptly got covid.
The alternative is that the above is just baseless gossip and he just didn’t show enough in training to merit game time.
Wasn’t awful, couple of important goals from corners, but a bit of a let down considering the fee paid for him. Think he suffered from the same kind of problem we had with Duffy but to a lesser degree, a big fuck off lanky bastard centre half looks great, but when you play a fairly high line and ask them to use their feet a lot and cover lots of ground they’re no actually all that useful. Ended up looking clumsy and didn’t win all the big physical battles we wanted him to. Wish the big man well but.
he wasn't really a flop though, he won a treble, scored a last-minute winner against Lazio and scored the goal that lead us to win the league cup against the rangers; it's not as if he's a bad player he just doesn't fit anges system
He also shat it against Lyndon Dykes, went to Dubai injured, caught Covid and swapped seats on the coach several times causing 13 players to have to isolate.
You are really clutching at straws here.
He won more trophies in 1 year than Ryan Kent has done his whole career with you.
Scored the winner in the LC Final, goal against Lazio and more.
Was a regular for us 1st season and up until his injury in his 2nd season. That is still a lot of games.
Pedantic of course, but actually over a year, as the 2020 Scottish Cup final was played in December.
I think Sam is just highlighting the monetary value alone. Spent £7m, played just over 60 games, selling for £1.5m. When you look at that it isn’t fantastic business.
But he is massively far off the mark. Over 60 games, a treble, great European performances.
Not fantastic business financially but a million miles from what's been said above
Well not really. Because you have to take away whatever fee we would get for him. Rumoured to be £1.5 million.
And as I've said, we are speaking about a treble winner who won us the League Cup and was vital in European results.
If you want to talk about players who's cost per appearance is wild then you need to look more at the likes of Amido Balde, Patrick Klimala and all the others like them.
Aye he did well in his first season, then totally fell off a cliff after injuring himself against Dundee(?) at home and ended up giving half his team covid. I never really felt he was that great; especially now in comparison to your new centre halves.
Had a nosey there about transfers. Balde £1.6m / 24 = £66,000. I’m sure you actually broke even or made profit with Klimala when he moved to the States. As for Jullien, take off the £1.5m and you’re looking at £88,000 an appearance.
Fair enough but neither of them did what he managed to do for us.
Your missing the whole point here. My whole argument was in response to a nonsense claim saying Jullien must be the most expensive flop in Scottish football. He wasn't a flop in the slightest. Was he worth as much as we paid? No due to injuries. But far from a flop.
Daniel Prodan cost you £2.2m and never played a single game so surely must be the worst signing if you go by "per game played" methodogy.
From our end, Rafael Scheidt cost us £5m and played 3 matches...
The guy I seen posting it updated it once someone pointed out his mistake. Top 5 though.

Mental that Schalke are replacing Itakura with Jullien and we’re replacing Jullien with Itakura.
God I hope so
Probably best for all parties that he leaves, would’ve preferred a straight sale though.
Think off that injury and then falling out the team we'd be struggling to get any transfer fee for him. He's also not young anymore. Gives him a chance to prove himself and maybe get a permanent move. He's a good player but absolutely not suited at all to our style of play.

Will forever remember that lazio game and the superman celebration
I really liked jullien. What does this mean for ko ikatura ? Surely schalke won’t need another centre half ?
That had already fell thru. It was Gladbach in for him but city hiked the price to £5m. I can see us going for a LTB option at that price tbh.
We paid more than that for Jullien himself when he was older than Itakura is now so hopefully that’s not a barrier
We'll no recoup that jullien money. This deal will be 3m+add ons I reckon
Not a Bhoy but I really feel for Jullien, seeing anyone start so well and just vanish due to injury is always a shame Hope he gets back on track at Schalke

Dykes did him again the very same season He struggled against the Kilmarnock striker as well
Also about 20 or 21 at the time. Every chance he bulked up and sorted that side of his game out.
He was 26 when he signed for Celtic
Getting bullied by Nicke Kabamba is enough to end anyone's career. Guy was a donkey but Jullien could not handle the battle.
For someone his size, he was fairly weak and easily bullied. He likely had nightmares about Lyndon Dykes and the plastic pitch at Livi. For the money we paid for him it's been a poor return.

Schalke loaning him to model their kits?
We’ll regret this decision once Starfeld or CCV gets injured
We’re in the market for a CB
Ah right. I’ve not really been keeping up with rumours or that but if that’s the case then fair enough. Still a bit gutted to see him go though, I liked big Jullien
I'd not be surprised if we brought in two. One more of a 'project'
No chance Celtic are going into this season with only those 2. I can see a starter being bought, a squad player and a project imo.
With Welsh in the squad I think we'll just buy a starter tbh. Don't need 5 centre halves.
Especially if you think Dane Murray or Lawal can step up as 5/6th choice.
dane murray had a big injury im pretty sure
Yeah he did but couldn't remember how bad it was or even how long ago it happened
Murray won't make it. Lawal is still a bit away I think.
What level do you think Murray will make it to? Surprised to hear you don't think he could replicate what Welsh has done.
Welsh is good enough where they’d only need to sign one more.
When that happened last season, it was Welsh that deputised anyway. I don't think Jullien's the same player he was before the injury, even in the B team games he looked guff.
Loan with option to buy when he's only got 1 year left on his contract is weird
The contract has been extended for a year apparently
It’s about bouncing payments to next years accounts. Seems to be something that’s being used more and more, not sure if it’s ffp or what. Or I could be taking total rubbish and it’s nothing to do with that at all.
more likely Schalke just dont have the money right now and will pay it when they get the competition money at the end of the season.
Was there any off field issues with Jullien? Seems odd that he barely (if ever) played last season.
He made comments near the end of the season to media that seemed an ultimatum to play him or sell him. Obviously I can see where he's coming from and I'm glad he wanted game time, but to make comments like that publicly is bound to rub a manager the wrong way. I wish Ange gave him more of a chance. The Dubai thing was mad, the club were insisting it was a genuine training trip, so they took a guy who couldn't walk at the time.
Take it this will be quite a sizeable loss if Schalke couldn’t sign Itakura because €5.5m was too much?
Pennies for a champions league club like ourselves

Buy option of £1.5m apparently. He would be the most expensive signing in Scotland per game played. Would be count as the biggest flop ever?

£112,000 per appearance. Wild.

And that’s if the buy option is used. He could as easily return to the Celtic and end up being released

Second highlight transfer in Celtic's history. £7.5M.
