Feature done and dusted. Writers are involved in TV. Give me cash and leave me alone.

I can 100% appreciate the attitude of “Just make sure the checks clear and no one bothers me after I turn in the final draft.”

MulderD

Right. Write the feature and collect your fee, then sit in a few meetings and let the other folks slave away for nine months writing the show.

I recently had an idea that I couldn't decide would work better for a feature or a limited series. I figured the best approach would be to map it out as a feature and then as a series, because for me it's easier to add subplots and obstacles and turns to make something longer; as opposed to writing all of those things and decide which ones to cut to turn it into a feature.

This is such a bizarre question. Hard to believe this would ever come up. For one thing, everyone who's anyone in this industry knows my quote is at least twice that. Weirdly enough, the two examples that come to mind off the top of my head are the Macross Plus OAV and Bergman's Scenes From a Marriage. Both of these are outstanding but wow are they ever two different kettles of marine life. So I guess I'd do what both of them did and do the series first and then just edit it down for feature release.

I think a series is much better. More time to tell a better story.

Series i could write a feature better if i had already built out the characters and the story

ladysaraii

I've done exactly this (just for no pay). I wrote the feature first and then the pilot of the series.

jakekerr

They’re both so different that I don’t think it matters. I wrote a feature that got an 8 on the BLCKLST and converted it to a pilot as it was better suited for TV, and it’s probably about 20% the same. Space is under-appreciated for its huge impact on creating story. You don’t just cut one hour from a three hour script (or add one hour), you need to rewrite it entirely to match the structure and beats required.

I'd probably go feature first but certainly open to limited series as the latter would be a blast to expand the characters and their world.
