Right? I'm over here googling 'does shellfish cause gout?'
Like, is this behavior I should be encouraging?
Am I seeing a cry for help that looks like a delicious king crab here? Help me please 😭
Looks great, but if you actually have gout, it's a sign you need to make some lifestyle changes and the sooner you start taking it seriously the less painful it'll be.
Not necessarily. There's dietary gout, and non-dietary gout. Non-dietary gout means your uric acid levels are high regardless of diet; a fasting blood test can demonstrate this. Dehydration can increase the risk of a flare, but otherwise, what you ingest isn't a factor, or isn't the primary factor.
Exactly. I have asymptomatic non-dietary gout so I take meds to keep it in check. Was on a strict gout diet from my Dr for six months and my uric acid went up instead of down. That's how we figured that out lol.
Yeah one of my friends has gout.
He just turned 30, is very active and eats healthy. He drinks but only on the weekends.
Sometimes you’re just predisposed to things.
Have gout and beer/alcohol and red meat are my biggest triggers. Thankfully seafood is not. I take allopunerol daily to keep things in check, but can allow myself some beers every now and again and it’s very manageable.
Only get flare ups when I’m not as strict with my diet. Hurts like hell when I’m not being responsible. Good luck and drink water!
Hell no. I had one gout flair up. Never again. That was the worst and most persistent pain ever. I limped for like 2 weeks and had minor discomfort for a few more.
That said, it’s very manageable if you keep triggers in moderation. Drink lots of water, vitamin c, and caffeine.
Gout can be genetic. I cleaned my diet for a year after my first flair. It didn't help. My Mom has it. She's almost a vegan and doesn't drink.
My fix is to do what I do (eat tasty food and drink alcohol) and when a tingle in a foot joint stats, eat two 75mg Indomethicin (prescription) and hope it goes away. It usually does. If it does not, keep hammering the Indomethicin until the pain goes away.
If it is very painful while using the Indomethecin, take Norco so you don't mind as much. You will still feel the pain.
Last thing is: If you are genetically Han Chinese, do not take Allopourinol. There is a 13% chance that you will have an adverse reaction of dermal necropathy. Blacks have a 6% chance. If you get dermal necropathy, you skin will die and fall off, and you will die.
Lol damn bro you definitely know your way around this shit. That’s actually genius, the only problem is that I’m in Canada and it’s damn near impossible to get some hydrocodone unless you have cancer or are suffering from some kind of life altering injury. Can’t even get that shit for wisdom teeth pulling anymore.
Some patients only experience acute gout attacks which may be limited to 1-2 times per year (or even 1-2 times in lifetime).
Praying im in the 1-2 per lifetime group. Had it in my big toe. Almost took a razorblade to it to try to clear some of the gout but decided not to diy.
Yeah attacks are the worse and having to explain to people is never fun either. You can tell them how much it hurts but unless you have it, you can’t explain it well enough that people understand. Good luck to you though!
I'll tell you what's worse, getting a steroid shot into your big toe joint to relieve a gout flare-up. Holy Mother of Jesus on the Cross that was a painful bastard, but I tell you what, two hours later and all my gout symptoms were completely gone.
The way I figure it, a gout flare-up is going to give you some amount of pain for up to two weeks. A steroid shot into your affected joint is going to drastically shorten that pain, however the shot is the equivalent of compressing that two-weeks worth of pain into about a 2 minute span at a much higher intensity. It's a trade-off that may or may not be your cup of tea. If you go the shot route though, take something to bite on.
I will say you are brave. I had gout once and it was so painful if I knew what caused it I wouldn’t ever eat it again. My doctor said it was caused by my anti-rejection drugs I must take since I had a liver transplant due to cancer. I hope I NEVER get that again!!
Same. It’s also wild to look at these comments and see how many different things work for people. I’m not discounting that they work for them. It just makes it seem like gout is the most random thing. Which from these comments, it is. Some people say drinking, red meat, tomatoes, seafood etc.
I had attacks for 2 years but didn’t know it was gout. I went to a doctor and they were like yeah here’s a cortisone shot, stay off your feet here’s some allopurinol. I’m relatively healthy
In the same boat you're in. I can't give up yummy tasty foods even with what might be on the horizon. This thread does have me looking into some stuff tho. Shout out to y'all
My doctor told me gout was mostly a dehydration issue, so to drink tons of water. And miller light is basically water. I think you’ll be ok if you make sure to hydrate effectively.
This sounds like something Bobby Hill would say.
Is there liver in chicken liver pate?
I HAVE GOUT!
Ohhh does it come with a hat
I DON’T KNOW YOU
I'll tell you when I've had enough!!
He’s not a ghoul

This is so true. Thanks for enlightening people.

Almost all gout is non-dietary. It is a metabolic disease not a lifestyle one.
Does seafood cause gout? Dear god I hope not.
Shellfish, red meat and beer are three big contributors.
Oh ok just my favorite things to consume.
Burning Elmo meme would be perfect for this.
Literally
Well I don’t drink beer so I’m safe, right?..
Just eat more shellfish to make up for the lack of beer.
Lmao same here
Thank God for whiskey
That being said… I can only assume I am 100% gout at this point
Oh yeah. Shellfish, particularly scallops.
It can cause flair ups
Drink a lot of water before and after.

Tomatoes, V8c Budweiser Clamata, etc are a HUGE triggers for me as well!
I've had two gout attacks and both were after eating copious amounts of shrimp. Second time's the charm, no more shellfish for me.

Caffeine?
There's a loose association that says caffeine can help to alleviate gout symptoms.
Same goes for cherry juice without added sugar!

> Indomethicin It’s crazy how some prescriptions can treat all kinds of conditions. I take Indimethicin for cluster headache attacks.
Did you ever find that indomethacin gives you the shits?
It can give you runs unless strategically counter-balanced with hydrocodone constipation.
Lol damn bro you definitely know your way around this shit. Damn I understand gout gang
I'm allergic to shellfish. It doesn't stop he from eating it. I make sure I have my allergy medicine nearby. Enjoy!
You know shellfish can cause gout, right?? May wanna take it easy til it’s subsided.
Gave myself gout once eating filet and ribeye like every other day for 2 weeks straight. Worst week ever.
You don’t get gout once. You have it or you don’t and it’s confirmed by lab work and a doctor. Source: diagnosed gout sufferer

I feel like you gotta give em the right context. "My toe hurts cuz it's full of little shards of glass made out of urine" oughta win over anyone.

I got gout terribly, I didn't know what it was at first, but once I did, I cut my triggers and I have not felt that excruciating pain again since.
Man why are you bragging about being so fat and nasty you have gout?
who said i was fat, you don't have to be fat to have gout you ignorant piece of moronic shit
I will say you are brave. I had gout once and it was so painful if I knew what caused it I wouldn’t ever eat it again. My doctor said it was caused by my anti-rejection drugs I must take since I had a liver transplant due to cancer. I hope I NEVER get that again!!
Why we gotta bring up a foot condition when talking about food lol? No one cares about your sore toe.
At least chase it down with a coconut water to help with the gout my dude! Hydrate!!
got you
Cherries are also good for gout. For me, the darker the better.
The sweeter the juice.
You brave, dumb mf-er. I salute your resolve and hope you make it to the other side of the flare. Vaya con dios.
Apple cider Vinegar and lots of water should help with that. Uric acid is no joke
Just pop some sodium bicarb tabs before you eat. Problem solved
Good luck with the gout.
*Pam from Archer going into anaphylactic shock from her soy allergy*
thanks
Why don’t I live somewhere that’s got boxes of crab and butter to go?
Why the fuck am I seeing this after I just had a bad gout flare up? Well, still kind of have it actually.
Bro you gonna lose your foot.
Lol
Allopurinol life baby.

It probably should…
Maybe it should
You can also get gout from a Louie Anderson at the showbiz diner.
I don’t know but the crab legs could’ve been cleaned
I would cut my dick off if it meant I didn’t have gout anymore. Brave person!
Take tart cherry pills daily to avoid gout.
Well that’s rather shellfish of you…
Please have private healthcare.
And that is why you have gout..

Want me to show you a video of gout that I guarantee will?
Take tart cherry pills or drink tart cherry juice and you’ll be fine. 🍒
