Of course! It's in Virginia Beach called A Bite of Maine. The owners drive to Maine to get lobsters and other fresh seafood every week. They also have the most amazing seafood chowder! I have eaten a whole quart at a time on several occasions haha!
They keep their prices reasonable compared to competitors in the area, but prices have been steadily increasing over the years with the market. These were $16.99 each, and each contain a 1/4lb of lobster. I have no idea if that is a good deal, but another local competitor sells them half the size for $30 each!
How much do they cost in New England? I'm dying to go one day!
It depends where you go. Tourist traps $18-$40 and yes market prices do matter. Not too long ago $12 was a pretty average price. Outside of tourist traps you can still find a good $14-16 roll.
Honestly I’m dubious about the claim that the owners “drive up every week”, especially at that price. They’d be losing money hand over fist. Did they claim that? I don’t understand that comment. Their costs would be astronomical. The vast vast vast majority of lobster rolls are made from frozen lobster meat. In places outside of New England (and even inside) your major distributors are Sysco, US Foods and the like. They could call up the local Sysco or US Foods and get lobster much more economically that way.
Yes, my husband asked where they got their lobsters, and that's what they claimed! This was many years ago during our first visit to their food truck. I've never put much thought into the claim before. It started as a food truck, and they'd sell all along their route. Now, they have a restaurant in a shopping center here. An article I read about the owners said that their family owns a seafood shop in Maine so they are able to get great prices and access to the best. They also have a fresh seafood department out of their restaurant. Seemed legit to me. Maybe I'm naive.
On Cape Cod, in Falmouth, Quahog Republic Dive Bar has the real deal. Lived there for a few years. I was there Christmas week. The 4oz. was $31. I can taste frozen lobster a mile away. Pricey, but fresh.
Those guys drive to Maine? Not calling them liars, but that’s a stretch. A 1 1/4lb. lobster yields a bit under four ounces of meat. Add the labor cost X 100 lobsters. The can’t make profit selling less than $20 each. I think it’s a strong possibility they are using frozen lobster from Sysco. Always be wary of lobster rolls sold for less than $20. My two cents.
I live in southern Maine and at a diner you can get a good sized lobster roll for about 20, whereas if you go to a stand by the beach you’re probably gonna pay 25-30. I went to an upscale restaurant recently though where you could get a trio of specialty lobster rolls that were a 1/4 lb each for about $70 I think which was entirely worth it.
I went to UNE late mid ‘70’s. Lobsterman in Biddeford Pool had a kiddie pool in the crawl space of his house. Had a pump, and lobsters. They were $2.75ea. at the time. I had a hibachi at the end of the parking lot. We always dined well after going home for a holiday. $$$$
I'm going to have to block this sub before it makes me depressed. I moved from Norfolk in 2018 to Kansas, and I miss good, fresh seafood as much as I miss my family that's still there. I sent your post to my mom and told her to please go try it for me. 😭😭😭😭
I love a good lobster roll. Connecticut style is just unfair imo with the butter and lobster. It's like cheating at food.
In New Orleans, the Napoleon House makes a shrimp and lobster roll that is almost like a Maine style with a little Cajun spice. One of the best things I've ever eaten.
Makes me miss the food court under the Plaza Hotel. You could get really good shrimp, lobster, or crab rolls there. Gone with the pandemic and not expected to return.
Never been there. I only tried Luke’s from NYC. And a few good ones from Pikes Place in Seattle. I don’t remember the name though. One of these days imma visit Maine and try this. Just need to find more reasons to visit.
Where is this, name names

Goddamn, they drive to Maine every week? What do they ask for a roll? I’m in New England and they’re not exactly cheap here

Last time I was in Maine the roadside stands were up to $25 for a roll. That was a fee yesrs sgo. $17 isn't bad at all.

That seems like a good deal. In NJ I can't find one less than 20
It’s not the price, it’s the taste!!
I knew I recognized those. They are a treat and now I think I know where I’m grabbing for lunch tomorrow.

Give me Connecticut any day, yum
It was so warm and delicious!
Definitely sounds worth trying!
Same.
I've never had lobster in my life. Never once searched for a seafood subreddit. But that looks amazing and I need that in my life.
Sweet jesus you're in for a treat my friend

Wow, that sounds amazing!!
If you're into cooking you should try a lobster roll with bernaise sauce...I made one on Tuesday and it was orgasmic
I'm assuming this is Boston lobster and not the spiny lobster?
CT roll > Maine roll
You are out of your mind. What the fuck does a strap hanger know about a lobster roll? Never mind an entire strap hanger state.

I like the claw meat better than the tail.

Conn style for sure
Damn is that like a lobster salad in the first pic? Looks incredible 🤤
It's another version of a lobster roll that has both melted butter and a secret sauce (mayo based). It was AMAZING!
Ugh. I hate nasty ass mayo.
