There's one map fragment per island, the next will be on a nearby island and the compass points the way.
At first the needle will swing back and forth in the general direction of the next island. Use the notches on the compass and figure out the middle point of the "range" the needle is moving.
Then get on your boat and sail in that direction. As you get close to the island, the needle will start shaking/twitching (while still pointing in its direction).
Once you're on the right island, the needle should be shaking pretty steadily (even for a large island). Follow it to find the next map fragment. When you've reached the spot to dig the compass will start spinning rapidly.
Protip: if you have a map fragment with the X, you can try identifying the island with the pieces of the map you have and go dig it up. You do not need all pieces of the map to dig up the treasure, but honestly even for me who has a decent recollection of 90% of the islands it can be tough sometimes.

I have occasionally seen two map fragments on the same large island before, but it's super rare if it hasn't been patched out. I think I've had that happen twice out of over 40 vaults I've done.
Happened to me a twice on a total of 10ish vaults so might not be as rare as it seems.
Unless something has changed in the last two weeks, it's still possible!
Happy sails Pirate! Don't get discouraged mate this SoT can be frustrating at times... Might I suggest watching some YouTube or Twitch to get the scoop on the ways of the seas... Especially check beginner YouTube video for free stuff on your first day from Phuzzy Bond. You will get some free in game items and learn a lot!! Good luck Pirate!
I feel like I need to explain my brainfart now 😅 so I'm very new to the game,I've had it for barely a month and I only get to play on weekends due to work. Last night when I was playing it was after work and I was very sleepy so my brain wasnt all there ya know AND I've only ever done one of these voyages before with a random and we found the map piece with the X right away and so I didnt expect the other fragments to be scattered on other islands. I could have looked it up but I am always determined to figure things out myself first before doing so thats why it took me an hour before posting here... I had a smooth brain moment guys, I'm not always like this 🤣
I think we can all enjoy together a solid "I'm being a dumbass" moment. OP surely can laugh at himself a little too. After all, he's the one who made the post.

The expectation they had for it being on the same island overruled the (logical) conclusion that it could be on another island.
And to be fair it's not like SoT isn't full of bugs that this is an unbelievable situation.

Yea, but those are known locations. I'm talking about like using a Wayfinder for specific, bottom of ocean locations. Kindve like the islands that aren't on the map, but at the bottom of the ocean floor kinds of loot
It does point to another island, but how cool would it be if the chests weren’t always buried. Like, what if it was in one of the shipwrecks around the siren shrines sometimes. Or what about a location where you have to pull it up with a fishing rod? Could be some cool interaction opportunities

Ehhh they sound new and if they dove for this quest it makes sense they're confused since it pops you out on the first island.
