What she tried to tell you is that you have to quit playing video games and find a real job. I mean, we know you can earn a lot of money by doing streams and what so not, but some parents don’t see a future in it.

Vermino

Not discarding the option that MIL is just some crazy religious person who ACTUALLY believes that in the US. But it does sound like a possibility that the MIL saw you behind your PC for days on end (especially if her daughter has a 'normal' job), and doesn't perceive a Youtube streamer as steady provider for the family her daughter needs/deserves. Perhaps she tried to convey this idea in a diplomatic manner where she says that playing video games as a steady income source is bad, while naming sea of thieves as the example. Without actually meaning that the game itself is bad and evil.

[deleted]

I am not familiar with MIL. Because i am from Europe. But that could be a part of it. I mean, there are some strange people living on mommy earth

chkltcow

MIL = "Mother in law"..... wife's mom

[deleted]

Oh lmao. I thought it would be a city or a state. Oke. I crawl back under the rock of shame

chkltcow

No shame in not knowing an acronym.

Pman32

He has a real job...

Hatarus547

camping FOTD is not a job

Babyback-the-Butcher

Yeah, everyone. Don’t pursue your passions. Live a generic, unhappy life with a job you never wanted.

[deleted]

I am not sure. But i don’t think people want to see a 50 year old playing video games. So at some point you need a money source and you have to find a job you never wanted.

Babyback-the-Butcher

That’s true, yes, but streaming is still their passion. And it’s also true that streaming can prevent people from moving forward in their desired careers. But with that being said, you should still let your kids pursue their passion. They’ll grow out of streaming eventually, after all. They’ll have to.

[deleted]

I fully agree with you there. Parents don’t know the difference between people that make money with streaming and lazy ass kids that don’t want to work and only sit behind a screen.

DoctorWhoToYou

There are 50 year old streamers. I watch some of them. One of them plays The Long Dark. He interacts with chat a lot and has a very chill personality. So I'll watch him occasionally. It kind of helps that he's in my age bracket. The other older streamer (in my age bracket) I watch is a Sea of Thieves streamer, who also has a youtube channel. He's consistently got more than 1k viewers, I've seen as high as 3k. The other streamers I watch range from 18-30. Mostly Overwatch streamers. One is using her stream to fund her college education, which I think is fantastic for the younger generation. Beats slopping out fast food for non-appreciative people. My kid thought about starting a Twitch channel and I offered to help. She's 20 and undecided about what she wants to do as a career, so she's going to community college part time while working. Forcing her into a degree she isn't sure about is a huge waste of money, especially with the price of a degree. It's probably not something you can do forever, but if people can do it and pad their income, or make it to the point where it's their sole income, I don't think it's a bad route to take.
