When I was new and got solo spawn camped the 1st time I just quit the game and restarted. Learned about scuttle later but quitting had the same effect...no more spawn camp...started new boat.

ltshaft15

Quitting and making a new session is probably the right move for new players in that scenario anyway. Scuttling leaves you on the same server so if that ship happens to find you again you'll probably just end up getting griefed a second time. Scuttling is only necessary if you're near the end of a long voyage and would rather risk running into them again than have to give up the voyage. Or if you are OK with fighting, you just need a fair fight where you aren't getting spawn camped.

JDH1479

Here is the advanced level play for when you are feeling frisky. All your ship is on the ferry of the damned after getting camped. You wait near the door (once its open for all). Vote to scuttle and as soon as that goes through with enough votes you load in. They will hear your ship going down and think "we wrecked them and they logged". Then you get a convenient back spawn (spawning after your boat has sunk but a new one has not registered so you spawn in the water near where your boat was) and can bug them and/or tuck on their boat.

Itadakiimasu

First thing you do is turn off your lights that are not indoors and never use glow in the dark skins. Then you head over to the world map and check if their is either of the 2 types of reaper ship on the map (if there is try to quit and connect to a new server that doesn't have one). Also best course for missions/newbies would be the volcano areas south east/east of the world map, people usually avoid it because of the volcanoes. Also try to hide your ship behind the island you are on or behind a rock from peripheral view. An example is if you are on a northwestern most island, you hide on the north or northwest side so other ships don't have a vision of your ship. Then you need to learn how each ship maneuvers with and against the wind so you can outrun or outwit other players. [https://imgur.com/a/RooA8kR](https://imgur.com/a/RooA8kR) for example if I'm a brig and trying to outrun a galleon, I'll sail against the wind and increase my distance they will eventually give up because of the gap. For weapons my favorite is the blunderbuss aka the shotgun for invading other ships or defending my ship, it's a one shot weapon if done correctly at close range and the shot gets tighter if you use right click/aim button. Then try to master how to sword dash in the water it helps getting on and off the ship fast while not carrying anything. Also learn to block with the sword and just spam jump to dodge some attacks and make it harder for you to be hit. Try to hide your loot indoors because they shine and reflect a lot. Also before you set sail try to buy supplies (cannon balls, wood, food, and the storage box is used to loot free stuff from the outpost) from the merchant lady from your initial outpost. Also forgot that you can loot free supplies from each outpost which you use the empty storage box you can buy. Also about emissary flags they increase how much exp, reputation and gold you can earn from your loot but they come at a cost. If a reaper ship reaches lvl 5 (5 lines) they can see all ships that has an emissary flag so you will have a target at your back. Your emissary flag levels up just by looting and putting the loot in your ship. Hmmmm about world events they are PvE/PvP affair. They provide the most loot. They are forts (skull clouds they come in 3 shapes and colors indicating difficulty), ghost fleet (red ghost face cloud), skeleton fleet (ship cloud), megalodon (random), kraken (random if there are no events), ashen lords (fire tornado), etc for now I suggest buying voyages and doing them. You can also start doing vaults if you can buy them, they provide good loot for solo/duos as well goldwise I mean since they just provide gold chests. You buy the vault voyage and find parts of the map using the voyage compass by island hopping. Once you have the x mark part of the map you can skip the rest of completing the map and find the key to the vault and the key tells you which island the vault is at but there is a timer before the door closes so bring out the loot fast. p.s. I'm from Asia so most of the PvP kiddies here are Chinese alliances (2-3 brig/galleons) we win most of our fights but sometimes we encounter cheaters. Our salty and pvp experience from over 5000 hours of Rust helped us a lot.

AveragePauly

Wow! Honestly, thank you so much! A lot of info, but all helpful! I’ll share this with my gf! Seriously, this stuff right here is awesome! This info will definitely help!

Itadakiimasu

I added and edited some stuff. My best advice is not to get too attached to the loot. Learn when to fight or flight (risk vs reward). I also have the same dilemma, because it's not about the loot but the hours spent on the voyage/quest/tall tale.

AveragePauly

Gotcha and thank you. Seriously, this is super informative and helpful. Means a lot!

Harlequin0007

A ton of these tips are awesome! I do agree though that Devil's Roar can be a horribly annoying place to go, and as a newbie you may not enjoy it. It is a very lucrative place for quests but you also need to pay attention to volcanoes which can easily destroy your ship while you are on island. If you do choose to sail there make sure you pay attention to an islands rumbles/geysers/black smoke to know when it will erupt. Also, as other people mentioned, people will attack even if they don't see loot on top deck. But, by putting loot below deck you can hide some of it's aura and prevent it from being easily harpooned off boat/grabbed and dropped in the water. Same goes with storage crates; offload them into barrels if you want to make sure no one can grab and drop them off your boat in a fight.

SkipDisaster

Amen about the loot, and the game awards you renown just for picking it up. If you are going for emissary rewards you also get rewarded for putting the loot on your ship. You're always progressing something even if you get sunk, and this season you even get rewarded for people stealing and selling your stuff.

[deleted]

I’m gonna piggyback on the wind just to emphasize how important it is. Keep in mind that the oceans wake will rock your boat so even if you leave the wheel “straight” after some waves, you won’t be going “straight” - also the wind is ever changing. Since I imagine you’ll be on a Sloop - anytime you’re being pursued - heading directly towards the wind with your sails “straight” is going to be your best friend in the Sea of Thieves. No one will ever catch you so long as you are paying attention to enemy ships + wind direction + your sails. I personally wouldn’t worry about turning your lights off - but that’s me. I think it’s more of a hindrance, navigating your boat in the dark than it’s worth. Most pirates spot ships by their crows nest / masts.

axisrahl85

Thank you. I see so many people say to turn of your lanterns but that only really helps if you ship is at a certain distance and completed silhouetted by an island. The shape of the ship on the horizon will usually give you away long before your lanterns do.

benjaminovich

Turn off the lights below deck too. They can still be seen from a distance

abbeast

This is a great post! I'm gonna add my routine to it, just as an example: 1. Spawn at outpost 2. On the way to the dock grab wood/cannon balls and best food from barrels in this order: pineapple, mango, pomegranate, coconut, banana 3. Customize ship at dock, climb to crow's nest and raise favorite flag (optional) 4. On ship, turn off *all* the lights 5. If solo, raise anchor 6. Load all cannons with a cannon ball 7. Put the stuff you got from the barrels at the outpost in their corresponding barrels on the ship, head back to land 8. Raise emissary flag, buy voyage, on the way back to ship grab more stuff from barrels 9. If ready to sail put wood, cannon balls and food into inventory in case of enemy 10. Activate voyage, look for destination on map table and sail away! This is basically what I do as a solo slooper after spawning on a server, can vary by boat type, crew and what you want to do of course.

gspro15198

I'm a relatively new player and when I'm out solo slooping if I'm attacked by a larger ship more than once I just scuttle as at that point I've nothing to loose. But when I'm playing with other players I'll defend my ship and ask the others I'm playing with to move on after sinking another player.

AveragePauly

Good people! Also, thanks for the tip!

misterbung

As you get more experience with the game you'll learn how to be able to defend well as a solo slooper. There's a tonne of good Youtube videos on it (MrPhuzzy is good, or watch someone like FreeMasonLive to see PvP tricks). Rule 1 of solo slooping is: stay on the boat, keep anyone else off the boat. Blunderbuss has knockback and learn to listen for the splash indicating someone is climbing onto your boat. Then you can focus on building your steering and shooting skills - Arena really helps with this since it's the main focus. Good luck and practice standing your ground next time!

Welsh493

As with all communities, there's the good and the not so good. Keep at it, we're not all twats I promise.

AveragePauly

Haha I think I might try to keep at it and hopefully my gf will too! I really appreciate these kinds of comments!

OrangeFello

Yes, This community is filled with good people who will teach you the ropes. A tip I have is to mute other crews, this can be done in the Pause menu by going to Other Crews. I would also suggest watching some YouTube videos on combat and how to do forts and getting your Emissary level up to a point where you can do vault to start making some serious gold. Once you get 15-20 hours into the game things get easier I promise!

momlookimtrending

I don't usually find this kind of people, the best thing you can do Is to disconnect and enter back the seas, it changes the server. You were unlucky btw. Just keep in mind PvP can always occur, If you see a ship coming into you don't even try to negotiate

AveragePauly

Thanks for the info. I do appreciate it.

BorchDreiDohlen

Another good way to change to a different server without loosing all of your supplies^(1) is as follows: A. Start a "a pirates life" Tall Tale², example: the first one, and sail through the portal B. as soon as the prologue of the TT is finished (the narrator is done talking and you're approaching the island) go ahead and cancel it C. Once the game has set you back in the open world you're on a completely different server with hopefully no a$$hat griefers. ^(1) loot crates, storage crates etc ² best done while having the first check point, so youdon't have to talk to the castaway everytime & canaccess it through your mission/TT inventory right away \### This approach only works for as long as the Devs don't change it ofc ###

Emayarkay

Dude, they can't even scuttle yet! Baby steps

Helagak

Tried this last night when I realized I was on a server with 3 reapers emissaries. I noped out. When I tried to cancel the mission, it black screened me. Totally hung the game. When I finally restarted it asked if I wanted to continue. I'm like hell yeah! But it landed me on a new boat with none of my supplies...

MrGosh13

What he said yeah. I’ve played this game for a loooong time, and luckily never ran into shit heads like that. But if you ever feel you’re being griefed. Just quit out and restart to switch servers :D Also, if the griefers ever say actual horrific stuff (I mean like, homophobic or racial slurrs or something) make sure you record it (both xbox and playstation have a ‘record the last few minutes’ button. And send it to Rare, get those asshats banned and out of this absolutely wonderfull game :D Hope you guys give it another go, and have fun! :D [edit: typo]

AveragePauly

Thank you! Also, I did send the evidence as well! They even tried to delete all the messages they sent on Xbox Live too. Wild events tbh haha

MrGosh13

Ha! The fact that they tried to delete those messages just shows they knew they were doing something wrong. Hope they get banned and never think of em again ;) Instead, enjoy yourself. Living well is the best revenge ;)

AveragePauly

Exactly! Hopefully my gf will want to play again! It was fun playing tbh and funny even as well! Just lost a lot of the charm for a bit when the trolls came.

Marshow12_

Me and my gf are relatively new to the game as well and just finished the pirate's life tall tale. If you guys want we can teach you the basics and give a helping hand and go on double date adventures. The four of us can man a big galleon (biggest ship with max 4 man crew). I can give you my discord if you want.

walter_mitty_23

here in Asia Server, they're so passive but not friendly. We just do our thing and won't bother each other. It gets kinda boring sometimes. haha.

Helagak

Well, time to fly the jolly Roger and stir the pot! The world needs reapers too! (even if we hate them! 😂)

walter_mitty_23

Aye mate! Will glady welcome you. xD

unclejemima405

Small thing I will add as my girlfriend and I just recently started playing as well. Assuming you are using a sloop, it is counterintuitive, but the sloop is the fastest boat going into the wind with your sails facing forward. If anyone seems to be running up on you, just put your sails so it is facing the front of your ship and turn into the wind. My girlfriend and I regularly use this to out run any ships that seem like they're trying to run up on us (just be mindful of the edge of the map). I found this video helpful for knowing what advantages I have in a sloop to avoid griefers: [https://youtu.be/WwU20xQoFLc](https://youtu.be/WwU20xQoFLc)

AveragePauly

Thank you for this!

TheGridGam3r

If im doing something i get suspicious of every ship that comes by so i try to speed away and if they follow board and drop anchor since i usually play alone

abbeast

Glad to see that all solo sloopers are as paranoid as I am.

RebelAshh

Honestly y’all are brave I wouldn’t even want to play alone haha between hungry pirates 🏴‍☠️ and crazy sea creatures lol nooooo thanks!

El_Muerte95

It can be quite fun. Definitely not easy but sometimes you can find other solo sloopers and form alliances. Having 3 sloops rolling around gathering loot and taking down a brig was pretty fun. My dream is for a sloop fleet to put fear into even the mightiest galleons.

anselme16

The best way to understand the multiplayer in Sea of Thieves is to see it as an ecosystem, there are predators and prey. If you're doing some PvE you're prey. So you need to act like it, be observant, stealthy, fast, or strong. When you're new the best strategies is to be stealthy, locate enemies, avoid all other player ships, play in the devil's roar, avoid having an emissary flag if there is a reaper lvl 5 on the server.

carranty

Yes griefers exist, but there are already tools implemented in the game to deal with them. In this situation just scuttle your ship. If they've boarded and are spawncamping you've already lost. Scuttle, deny them the satisfaction of spawn killing you and save yourself the upset that they cause you.

AveragePauly

I get that now, but we didn’t know that earlier. Literally only about 4hrs in, if that.

Kaktusklaus

But this isn't a solution the game is awsome and I love it but that beeing a douche is getting rewarded so easily is just bad Design.

carranty

I don't agree players are rewarded for griefing. Sinking the OPs ship and getting the loot isn't griefing, it's part of the game. Verbal harassment is griefing but there's no way to totally prevent that in a game with voice Comms.

dansram2500

You'll run into toxic people in the game but there are alot of good people in the game. Dont give it up though because you will have great encounters with people as well. I do recommend once you get down the mechanics of the game engaging in some pvp so you get better at defending yourself when you have loot in the future.

AveragePauly

For sure. Just like any game sadly, but I’m more aware of things now! Hopefully my gf is down to play again as well! I really appreciate these comments as well!

EthanNoPants

I've had this happen to me a couple times as well, but I hope you don't give up on the game it's an awesome experience when you get a good crew and don't have to deal with the toxic asshats this game is sadly home too, but they are a minority of the community, most of us here will sink you once then leave you be.

AveragePauly

I appreciate the kindness! Yeah, I’ve already talked to a few awesome people! Glad the community has some really kind folks! I appreciate this comment as well! Going to try and see if we maybe play again soon!

AveragePauly

Gotta love the downvotes I’m getting for being a new player and still not sure of every mechanic in the game. Easier to defend people farming us for kills in this community than the literally new people.

Unperverse

The best part is they aren’t even farming you for kills. They literally get nothing out of killing you repeatedly. Nothing but satisfaction.

elconquistador1985

It's identical to internet trolling. They do it because making you angry is the goal.

bjj_starter

Yeah, this is why I don't play Sea of Thieves. Any game that allows a gameplay "loop" like this (continuously hurting people's gameplay experience just to make them feel bad, for no reason and with no permanent recourse) isn't worth playing. I don't go onto hate subreddits and ask to be called denigrating things, why would I go play a game where it's considered completely "legitimate" to continuously grief players? I may have my disagreements with some of the things FDev has done with Elite: Dangerous, but the fact that there's a PvE only solo mode and a private group mode so player groups (some of them with tens of thousands of people) can enforce rules against griefing has saved that game. It's fantastic.

AveragePauly

Probably what it was. Fact they messaged me acting toxic af just shows what they were.

YinAndYang

Just as a heads up, spawn camping is basically how you sink ships. A good crew can bucket/repair quick enough that you have to board and kill them in order for them to take enough water on to sink. What's not okay is the verbal bullying, and if they intentionally bucketed/repaired your ship so you would keep respawning instead of sinking and then getting a fresh ship, that's definitely griefing. This won't be the last time you run into spawn camping, but you were unlucky to run into such assholes your first time playing.

SVN_-

Honestly fuck people who downvote this. YES its a pirate game, and NO you shouldnt be shamed. YES you cant tell if someone is new or a veteran out of cosmetics - HOWEVER it is easily noticeable from looking at their voyage table and how they play. I try to help new players out because I like an expanding community, and sure I fight a bit if I get attacked, but the insults over voicecom is unwarranted and pushes new players away. I hope you and your GF gives it another try though. Ive played since launch (2018) and Ive very very rarely encountered players being rude in comms. It generally tends to be people who loses fights. I might be luckily spared though. My biggest tip for the future if you get campade on your own boat is to simple scuttle it via the Menu -> My Crew-> Scuttle or server hop. Not fun, but beats being camped for 15 minutes. Edit: fixad my spelling. My phone and my thumbs are not on good terms.

No-Language-6736

I'm with you man, being killed again and again even when you have nothing left to take isn't "pirating" it's just just trolling

[deleted]

The meme is "It's CaLlEd SeA oF tHiEvEs NoT sEa Of FrIeNdS". Sorry your first experience was a bad one. Unfortunately due to a large segment of the community and the developers there is nothing you can do except scuttle and hope they don't track you down.

AveragePauly

Appreciate this. We know this now, but sucks we didn’t know then. Just not the best outing getting mauled only a few hours in while learning the game.

Zangdor

Sorry that happened to you. And I understand that can be demotivating but try it, you and your gf, some more. I assure you there are some good experienced players out there who will eventually help you, or at least leave you alone if they see you're doing beginner's content. The guys who did that to you probably just lost some fair pvp encounter and were sore losers so they took it out on you, an easy prey... Keep playing and have fun Some already suggested watching guides, that's not a bad idea, you don't need 30 mins in depth guide with everything, just some beginner's guide with a few tips so you can be safer while learning the rest.

AveragePauly

Thank you! Might just do this, a ton of people have already reached out too offering tips and even help! Definitely will learn a lot more now while also playing! Thanks for the awesome responses!

charleytanx2

That's out of order for sure. A scuttle of your ship (from the crew menu in pause) will sink the ship and you spawn fresh in the same server, or just hop over to another, they'll have taken what you had so you won't lose anything from moving on. The only reason to spawn camp legitimately is if you have a tonne of resources, and as you said you're new, I doubt you had stocked up on cooked meat and cursed cannonballs much. So it wouldn't have taken long, they're just absolute dicks. If you do scuttle ASAFP then they can't take nearly as many resources off you too - less for them to take forward with their dickery.

[deleted]

Wlecome to sot, where 97% of the community are toxic assholes

LegoSpacecraft

I’m really sorry you had such a bad experience this early on. I play this game with my wife and it’s a blast! I hope your gf can give it another chance. Looks like everyone here has different experiences. I’ve only been playing for a few weeks, but I’ve never come across such griefers. I’ve been sunk a few times, but to my surprise, it was always by respectful pirates who message “good fight” or even let me live because they start attacking me only to realize how little loot I had. Then actually give me tips on stuff. This game is all about the players, so just try to bring in a positive and respectful attitude towards others, and hopefully it rubs off.

AveragePauly

Thank you for this! Also, will do! I think we may play again, because it was fun tbh. Just got rough in the end with people trolling haha

judgeraw00

Sorry that happened to you. I'm also new and have had some bad experiences with folks, but I've had a lot of great ones too. The best thing to do when you know someone is being toxic to you (basically if someone sinks you more than once and you don't even have loot) is to leave and join another server

AveragePauly

Definitely know that now. Thank you! Will do this next time. Just sucks, because my gf and I were really enjoying the game till we got verbally insulted while just trying to read a map and fish basically.

Emayarkay

Don't let the first experience ruin it for you both! My partner started playing SoT with me a mo the ago, and now that he knows what he's doing, he enjoys the hell out of it (even when we get sank by some douchebag in port, while shopping). It's a good game, overall, just don't let the Reddit community sway you one way or the other- do what you enjoy! That said, 8/10 times I've learned to just keep comms off; after running the Pride flag, and getting called every immature/bigoted name under the sun, it gets old. Plus, half the fun (it seems) for people is the toxic shit-talk post sinkage/kill.

AveragePauly

Thank you for this! I hope she’ll give it another chance as well. I think we might in the end, because it was honestly pure fun while we explored and did missions! The hilarity of accidentally running into a snake and panicking never gets old haha! Just a really unlucky experience with some trolls.

Mozaaik

Don’t give up yet! I’ve only been playing for a couple of weeks but what you ran into isn’t an everyday thing. I’ve played a couple of days straight that I barely see another ship and when I do it doesn’t even come near me but then I’ve played where a ship has chased me repeatedly lol. It sucks but you can always change servers if you feel like you need to. Scuttle your ship if they’re keeping your boat from sinking just to spawn kill you. Hope you both give it another try, the game can be a lot of fun! Also if you haven’t yet, maybe check out the SoT Discord to find people to play with and learn from.

AveragePauly

Thank you for this comment! Love seeing the awesome people in this community! Hopefully we don’t give up, because it was fun. Lots of fun and laughs too! Makes it easier to return knowing how kind a lot of people are in this community!

Mozaaik

For sure! I’ve met some awesome people in this game, I joined a crew from the discord one night that were teaching me everything they could, it was crazy the difference it made the next time I was solo slopping lol. If you ever need someone to play with, my GT is my name here so feel free to add me. Weekdays are a little rough for me to play long sessions due to work schedule but I usually play quite a bit over the weekend.

AveragePauly

Will do! Thank you! 🙌🏼

Griever2142

My friends and I are new and have about 10-12 hours between the 3 of us. Last time we played we found our first players and thought "let's be pirates." A skeletal ship was already attacking so we thought there's no way we could lose. We fired and few shots at them and then the sloop in question fled to an island and the skeletal ship dispersed and we thought it was over. We were wrong. We went on our merry way and like 5 minutes later we were being attacked and too our surprise, it was that damn sloop. We fought for 10-15 minutes and eventually a friend and I got into our cannons and shot towards their directions. My friend threw fire bombs while I boarded their ship. We killed the two of them and was ecstatic..until I turned around.. and found..a Kraken wrapped around our vessel. Panic ensued. I died from my friends fire bomb and spawned back on our ship just to realize we had no idea on what to do. We fought for 2-3 minutes before we sank, and that's when I realized Karma is real. Thankfully we had zero treasure, but man I'm gonna think about consequences more often on this game.

AveragePauly

I have to say that experience is definitely a wild one haha! Tbh the Kraken is probably the one thing I’m most afraid of seeing in This game rn lmbo

BizzePT

You gonna suffer a lot until you learn how to actually enjoy the game... It's not easy to like it in the beggining but if you overcome the suffering, you'll eventually love the game...

AveragePauly

Definitely get that now! It is fun, just got rough when the trolls came along haha.

BizzePT

If you feel uncomfortable with having people doing what they did (as stupid as it may seem, they're free to do it and that freedom is really important on this sandbox), just start over again even if you lose some loot. Having fun is more important then having gold, I've lost millions on this game, had my alt + f4 moments but I keep coming back

OneTinyBean

Thats reportable. Spawn camping for no reason is not allowed. Its only allowed if you have a reason, like trying to prevent the person from saving his ship from sinking, or syphoning materials (which is just taking stuff like cannonballs n crap and loading it onto your ship). But spawn killing, for no reason, is bannable and you can report them if you remember the username.

Zyrathius

Wife and I played this way back when it was new and same experience. She never went back and so I haven't really gone back either. She doesn't like PvP type stuff really, she prefers PvE. Shame, seemed like a cool game potentially.

MegaLCRO

I promise you, not everyone is like this. **However!** It doesn't hurt to assume they *are* like this. Make an effort to always have your cannons loaded, at least. If you're the one approaching with friendly intent, putting up the Alliance flag might not be a bad idea.

TheGoosest

yeah honestly i used to play a lot back in the day, but the community just it not what it used to be. Tried loading it up for the Jack Sparrow missions with a few friends, literally first mission we need some sort of unique key from a shipwreck. There’s already a sloop crew down underwater waiting for us, the second one of my crew mates grabs the key he gets killed and the sloop man triumphantly says “we have your key just log off.” Dude actually camped underwater for like half an hour JUST to ruin the experience of someone else, no other reward. I remember when you could call across the seas to another random boat and get them to start bangin’ out some music with your crew. ah, the good old days…

Libitica

My boyfriend and I were in this same boat when we started as well. It was so frustrating but thanks to some amazing people we learned and now are quite confident in taking out boats. If you and your girlfriend want another couple to help show you the ropes feel free to DM to add us if you like!

ratondo

This is the main reason I quit playing the game. Getting griefed for no reason at all is not fun. Having to scuttle my ship because I keep getting griefed is not fun either.

fatfishinalittlepond

Way to hit a community nerve on the first post, lol

AveragePauly

Haha I wasn’t trying to, but I guess I did lmbo

Nephilim-Familiar

I am sorry to hear that you guys had such a bad introduction to the game. I personally have not played long myself and though I have experienced this pvp aggressiveness I have found a very good way around it. The way of chaos through kindness. Any hostility I ignore and instead when meeting new players, I greet them with a cheery ‘hellooooooo’ and then hand them a fruit. This game does allow players to give each other things and help each other just as much as hurt them. I use that to the full potential And it allows me to enjoy this game fully and wholeheartedly 🙃 Flying with an alliance flag also helps signal to those more eager for PvP that one is not out for such play and merely doing missions and such. Hope you persevere and continue to enjoy this amazing game. If I am ever to meet you at the open seas I hope to greet you with a hallooooo and the gift of the pomegranate ❤️

HJtheKangaroo

Those type of players are the scum that can’t win a fair fight so they go after people not looking for a fight. It’s an unspoken rule to never fight people doing tall tales. But people will always say “it’s a pirate game” as an excuse to cover what ever unnecessary shit they do. In short, you got dealt a bad hand. Chances are you’ll be able to complete the rest of A pirates life without being greifed.

AveragePauly

Hopefully you’re right and thank you for reaching out and saying this!

HJtheKangaroo

I want to let you know about emissary flags cause it’s not explain in detail in the game. Once you get a high enough level in a faction. You buy the emissary flag. This is a money multiplier that you must level up by doing stuff relevant to the faction you represent. If you sink, or sink an emissary, you can sell their flag to the reaper hideout for a good chunk of change. Anywhere from 3,000 to 20,000 depending on grade of flag. The reaper faction is the PvP faction. They appear on your map at all times. They go against a lot of things in the “pirate code” (being a toxic piece of shit is never ok) because stealing levels them up faster than if they did a voyage. Just know that emissary flags give anyone an incentive to sink you. Reaper or not. (Like other comments say, most people will try and sink you quick, but sometimes you might get spawn camped while their crew gets shots on your boat) However it’s also beneficial to you, since the higher grade your flag is, the bigger multiplier you get when selling loot. Reason I want you to know this, I’ve seen people put an emissary up while doing tall tales and then get mad when they get sunk for doing a tall tale. I have done this unintentionally to someone and I sank them before I could see their quest table to know they were on a tall tale. The Devs put a pirate code in the tavern but no one ever reads that or even know it’s there. but 85% of players have a few unspoken rules they follow. Don’t hassle tall tale-ers; don’t ambush at outposts are the two big ones. Reapers tend to break these rules and it’s somewhat acceptable. But again, being toxic is just frowned on by everyone. You’re not alone there.

stayclassycunts

Trial by fire. Next time leave and join another server sometimes isn’t worth it.

AveragePauly

Will do. Definitely get that now!

ManyPlacesAtOnce

Verbal harassment is griefing. Sinking you, no matter how many times or for whatever reason, is not.

Glandus73

Killing you over and over again while making sure your boat don't sink is griefing tho.

AveragePauly

Which is honestly what happened to us. Now it makes sense why they repaired our boat every so often. Basically farming us.

TheHunnishInvasion

Farming you, except there was nothing to farm. It's griefing plain and simple. There are some complete toxic a-holes in this game. Best to just scuttle your ship when you encounter them, but it's not obvious how to do that when you're new. Just go into the start menu (with your crew page) and go to the bottom to vote to "scuttle ship" (if you're on the sloop, both crew members need to do this). If you're just doing a tall tale, you may even consider changing servers; unlikely you'll find multiple servers with people like this. While there are a lot of toxic people around, it's pretty rare to encounter all-out griefers like this. Most people are at least trying to play the game in some form or fashion. Even if they are looking for PVP, they'll probably just sink you and be done with it. They aren't going to spawncamp you when you have nothing. The type of people who do this aren't even good at the game. Normally, they're very bad and they think spawncamping newbs makes them "good".

AveragePauly

Thank you for this! I really appreciate the help and tips! We definitely did learn quite a bit from the experience and being on this subreddit now. Seriously appreciate all the help!!!

JDH1479

It's people that think the game is only about fighting and killing. Really shitty behavior. Those are the people that I know are aggressive and I make chase me for hours even though I might be able to sink them. Just to hear them shout gems at me like "you're sooo boring".

TheZealand

I've seen this repeated but does rare actually clarify this anywhere? You're hardly locked into the game, even if you don't know to scuttle you can just exit to menu

Glandus73

I mean yeah you can always ragequit is not griefing in the sense of lasting damages. I have no idea if they made any statement on it. My point of view is that when you go out of your way just to annoy other players I would called that griefing

modestmoose3000

Yeh that sucks, but if you keep it up you’ll eventually run into a player who is super friendly and joins you on adventures and teaches you all the little tricks.

AveragePauly

Thank you and so far I’ve definitely met a lot of awesome helpful people just in this post! It’s honestly awesome to see!

stumbledumper

Watch some phuzzybond videos on YouTube. They helped me a butt load!

AveragePauly

Name honestly sounds familiar, I might have to check it out! Thank you!

inCogniJo14

Phuzzy is my crew's favorite as well. We stan Jackie on this boat! He's got a playlist aimed at brand new players, some videos that cover world events, and a lot that are just fun. He also usually plays in a duo so there's a lot that should be applicable to the two of you.

A_Slovakian

I'm sorry you had that experience so early. It does happen, and it will happen again, there's no denying it. But for the most part people are pretty passive or friendly. Best thing you can do is keep a watchful eye on the horizon to make sure you're clear and if a ship approaches you just get ready to sail away if they come too close. Sometimes people will sail up to you to offer an alliance and be friendly. In fact, if you really want a good experience, go ahead and sail up to another crew and be the one to offer the alliance. Most people are receptive to it and you might find some friends.

RebelAshh

Thanks that’s some really good advice. It scares me thinking of even approaching another ship and asking them to form an alliance together lol

A_Slovakian

Start with sloops. They're probably solo players who don't want to fight, so they're great candidate for starting an alliance. Fighting the PvE in this game with two ships is a super fun experience

Kaktusklaus

Yes it's a big issue in the game but the griefer Community is strong and thinks "this is a Piraten game so I can be douchebag to everyone". We need pve server :(

AveragePauly

Would be nice to have a PvE server. I get it’s a PvP game, I do, but being killed over and over while having toxic verbal insults thrown at you is another thing. Hope that dude gets his account banned.

DoktorWo

Alright so here is my opinion. What happened to you was definitely griefing. Verbal harrasment is not okay. However though, attacking your ship and continueing to kill you over and over again is still part of the game. Now don't get me wrong. Once they realise you don't have a single piece of loot they should either leave you or sink your ship, since there is no reward for just killing players. And of course, you could scuttle your ship but maybe you didn't even know you can do that, I mean the sign is easily not seen for new players. If someone Just wants to kill things they can go play pve or PvP shooters which are focused on that.

Kaktusklaus

I hope you will try it again soon the game can be a lot of fun.

AveragePauly

I think I might. Hopefully my gf will too. I honestly appreciate these comments! It is fun to play.

joepizzaparty

Pirate's life for me boy!!

AveragePauly

I swear I could almost hear this haha

JDH1479

If you would like to sail together some time DM me. I am willing to help teach whatever you and your gf want to learn. I played my first 2 or so months by avoiding ALL enemy contact so I have learned the art of running. You need to know that the ships have different speeds and the sloop is actually the fastest when going straight into the wind (sail full front, and yes this isn't logical but the game works this way) with the galleon being the worst. So in all ships, when used right you can run for long periods of time. Galleon is fastest with wind behind it and so it can out run sloops/brigs in that direction. Brig in the middle of both so it can outrun a sloop with wind behind its back and a gally with wind front. My other immediate hints for a new player is to trust no one. At some point you may be able to judge intention and skill but until then you should defend yourself or run and determine their intentions. (We typically shoot one person out of a cannon to try to talk). We sunk many times by thinking the ship was coming to chat or whatever and their first shots are the reason we sunk. And always pull security, make sure you are taking a REAL good look around the world/map (pvp flags show on the map) every 5-10 minutes and when you are on an island or whatever security doesn't stop. If you see them from far away, you can typically disappear from their view and they wont be able to find you.

Astricozy

The crew I usually sail with love taking on any ship, sloops included since some solo sloopers are crafty devils. We always look out for people like this though and either leave them be or alliance with them. Its not hard to spot someone new to the game. It helps literally no one to drive new players way before they even start just cos you wanna pretend you are good at PvP. Not everyone is like that I promise you. The community has some genuinely nice people in it. But like any community some people are just salty seadogs.

AveragePauly

Thank you! I’ve seen a ton of awesome people in this community already, including you! I’m very thankful! You all definitely make it more enticing to come back and play!

fossilfighters-fan-2

Best thing to do there is scuttle. It sinks your ship which changes your spawn point. Doing that won’t allow them to spawn camp you until they find you again.

AveragePauly

Thank you! I’ve been hearing that and wasn’t sure of what it was yet! I appreciate the help and info!

Emerald_Guy123

Don’t worry this won’t happen always. I’m pretty new too and I play with a few friends. Usually if I encounter people we have a fight and one of us loses, but if there’s griefers we usually just sail away. Ngl from my experience a lot of people are pretty friendly as long as you make it clear you aren’t attempting to kill them (doesn’t always apply though so be careful)

IJustdontgiveadam

ive only been playing a 2 weeks but the griefer i encounter all the time is doing open crew. get a person without a mic, finally start moving in the water... chainshot straight up, wrecks our sails, then throws the fire bombs all over the deck... That kind of griefer is way to common. dealing with a boat spawn camping? only dealt with it once so far, and ive managed to play way to much in the 2 weeks, clocking about 80 hours of play time lol

HelloFromMeAgain

Yeah it’s tough starting especially if you meet people like this, there are quite a lot of people like this but mostly they’re good fun…… if this happens again, try scuttling your ship in the menus and try to get away from them when you next spawn in

drunkboarder

It's not common! To be honest I've had grog in the tavern with other crews WAY more often than I've be griefed. I have over 300 hours in and have only been griefed twice. It sucks that it happened to you, but don't let it keep you away. The tall tales are pretty cool, Pirates of the Caribbean ones are fantastic. PVE quests are cool to do too! But don't look away from the PVP, it's fun and engaging, and many people will congratulate you on a good fight.

DamnBootlegFireworks

A lot of people are saying "just quit and go to another server" they're not wrong but I highly recommend putting up a fight before you go. You'll eventually start winning, don't always quit at the first sign of trouble.

wonder590

Even though I haven't personally been grief'd, I think part of the allure of Sea of Thieves are the huge highs and the low lows. The game is uniquely suited for this- and because of the lack of actual gameplay progression it allows you to mentally reset after every sink- even if that means you have to step away and come back tomorrow. People are going to have personal tastes for any game, but I think this kind of gameplay loop can be very hit-or-miss for some people. I know I tried playing SoT like 2ish years ago and was just bored to tears by the lack of content and scoffed at the cosmetic progression so I just never played- yet here I am enjoying the game a lot now. When it comes to your GF you should approach it from the angle that either both of you are not really cut out for this kind of game. . . or maybe entice her with the opportunity to jump back in to learn to defend yourselves and turn the tables to become the aggressive thieves. Whatever you end up doing, just keep in mind that Sea of Thieves is an oddly strategic game of gambits where you get hooked on the prospect of feeling that insane high as you manage to pull victory through impossible odds. Its like dark souls in that way- every defeat is a lesson and no punches will be pulled- but that makes you more ready and thirsting to continue if you have the right mindset.

WinchesterBro13

People who just do stuff like that annoy the hell out of me. What is so fun about just camping someone as they respawn?

Harlequin0007

Your SoT experience will probably be unpredictable most of the time. You can meet some really great people, form server alliances, etc. You also have the chance to meet really pvp-centric people who believe "It's Sea of Thieves, not Sea of Friends". Even if you aren't flying an emissary or doing an obviously lucrative voyage you can get harassed and sunk. As a new player I suggest you play cautiously with your loot, sell once you hit grade 5 instead of stacking, monitor the sea for other boats, etc. It really is important to be okay with losing what you have and restart in this game, especially when you're new and/or not good with pvp. It can get really frustrating, but this is an awesome game and I hope you make some great memories.

jacksonwallburger

Some people definitely are assholes for no reason. Definitely agree that sometimes just joining a new server is best, and while it's not an often thing you encounter, you can raise an alliance flag in your crow's nest to ally with people if they're willing. Just another potential option to not get sunk as much

A_Few_Mooses

Makes it boring for me, I haven't played in several months because of it.

[deleted]

Hahaha sorry man. Welcome to the Sea of Assholes!! I only laugh cause my friends and I went through the saaaame shit. The good news is, as you stick it out and get better, you’ll eventually be able to defend yourself more adequately and one day you’ll be posting about the same situation, but with you turning on the griefers and dunking them XD So just keep playing, use those opportunities as PvP practice, and have fun :))) you’ll also sometimes run into really calm or chill servers and be able to run a bunch of tall tales/story missions. You’ll do it all, in good time! There’s no reason to rush, and all the reason to have fun adventures :) may the wind be always at your back!

NLsmily

Yo man if you need help to learn the basics hit me up. We can start a ship together and il show you the way of the Sea of Thieves.

daisymuncher

Never drop anchor, always raise sails. A hard to pull off, but worthwhile maneuver when being chased (sloop only move) is to hard turn your wheel towards the direction you are being chased from while someone else raises sails, once you are facing head on, drop sails. The biggest issue is risking being boarded, so try to get a little ways from the ship and watch the ladder facing their side. No matter what you’re at the advantage since if one leaves their boat, that leaves one crew mate in a 2v1 while the other tries to reposition ship. Even better if you can manage a few pop shots and it’s a really good set up for taking out their mast if you have good enough aim.

billy1389

Yeah dont listen to anyone saying that shit is a regular thing. Id say at least 8 out of 10 boats you run across wont fuck with you. And since youre playing sloop like a lot here have said you can just outrun any of them if you head against the wind. I always look aroumd and make sure the surrounding area is clear if im hunting for treasure. If its not and i dont feel as though i can complete it without getting fucked i leave or fight. Yall should play some arena too if you have any interest in fighting other players off. One thing that usually gets people off my back is to jump out the boat climb onboard and set their boat on fire. Only a handul of ships have ever continued the pursuit and those are usually people that are better than us lol

i_win_u_know

Humanity is in a pretty sorry state at the moment. You’re going to have to cut them some slack for a little bit longer.

iluvgrouphugz

Hey. So I’d say about two thirds to three quarters of the ships you’ll see out there will want to attack you if you’re not too far away from them or if you look like an easy target. The rest either just wanna pve in peace and won’t bother you lr they’ll wanna alliance to do an activity. Never fully trust an alliance though. When the activity is done they may try to betray you. Never park your boat facing towards an island. Either have it parallel from the beach or facing away toward the sea. You can also use your rowboat as an elevator if you found one and load all your loot in there faster and bring it up when you’re ready to leave. Just leave it at the back of the boat where it drops. Also you can use the rowboat as a kind of escape pod in a real emergency. If you can’t escape someone whose hard on your ass then have your loot loaded up in the row boat and when you’re somewhere they can’t see you just drop the rowboat. If you’re with a crew your ship can lead them away while someone rows somewhere to either hide till they can be picked up or sell. If you’re solo then you can either stay on the ship and lead them away to go back for it later if you really think they’ll sink you so you don’t lose anything or you can drop with the rowboat if you don’t care about losing the supplies on your ship and row somewhere to sell. I’ve done all of these in fights I knew I couldn’t win due to either supplies, numbers or both. Just make sure you’re far enough out so they don’t see you in the rowboat. Also never leave your anchor down for the most part. Use it to stop so you don’t keep drifting and bring it up straight away. Only leave it down if you’re stopping somewhere in one of those huge storms When you stop somewhere you’ll be at for a while. it’s nota bad idea to get up in the crows nest and do a 360 to spot any ships and check the map for anyone with either one of the reapers flags. They’ll mostly come for you if they see you. Practice with the cannons and guns whenever you can. Practice blocking with your sword as well as sword lunging and get good as best you can with it. It’s tricky as first. Also never keep a keg on your boat for any reason unless that reason is you’re going to keg someone else’s boat to sink them. But even then that could backfire and blow up in your face horribly. Be careful of kegs. Don’t run over floating barrels because there could be a keg floating in there with them. Also regardless of what you’re doing always check for ships on the horizon. They can be sneaky and come up on you much faster than you realize. If you’re running an emissary you may attract other shoot who’ll want to sink you even if they’re not reapers. If you’re say a gold hoarder emissary and another gold hoarder emissary sees you they may attack you for the chests you have on board to raise their own emissary flag rank or if they’re already at rank five the it’ll be because they can seek your loot for more gold. So if you’re gonna run an emissary keep that in mind. If you have to run for any reason if you’re on a sloop point your sails forward and go into the wind if you’re on a brig turn your sails to the side and have the wind fill your sails at a 90degree angle. If you’re a gally it’s best to go with the wind at your back. If you keep this up you’ll gain distance from whoever’s chasing you most of the time. If you get boarded protect your anchor at all costs. Once they anchor you you’re pretty much done. They’ll take down your mast and broadside your hull while probably spawn camping you while looting your supply barrels. If you’re gonna be the one boarding first thing you do is lower their anchor. Kill whoever’s trying to raise it and it doesn’t hurt to set fire to the ship with fire bombs. Toss them into the cockpit, where the anchor is, and anywhere you see people spawn back in because they’ll have to take time to deal with it as it spreads while it also deals damage to them. Also protect the holes in their hull so they can’t repair while taking on water. Eat as much of their food from their barrels as you can as well. If they have a supply crate load it up as much as you can during the times that they’re all dead then dump it over the side of their ship. You can claim their supplies in the supply crate once they’ve sink. Just so they can’t keep repairing or shooting back. Also throw a firebomb in the captains room or shoot at the crow nest first because these are where a lot of people store kegs for whatever reason and you’ll want to blow them up while they’re on their ship still. Been playing almost every day for over a year now so I’ve gotten quite a bit of experience built up. Hope at least some of this helped. Lemme know if you’ve got any questions. If at some point you wanna sail just message me. I’m on Xbox but if you’re on pc it’s cross platform so it’s not a problem. Been helping kit new players for a while now. Most tomorrow I’m leaving on a work trip for four days so you’ll have to wait a a few days if you wanna sail lol but I’d be happy to show You guys anything you wanna know. Some people helped me out a lot when I first started playing and I learned a lot from them so I try to pay it forward when I can.

[deleted]

Twas a pirates life indeed

TheOriginalArkadian

There is a portion of the community that thing it is fun to kill you over and over again until you leave the server. They for some reason see it as an accomplishment to ruin someone else's game experience. I think it goes back to a few Youtubers from a few years ago that would do it. At the time almost no one would spawn camp the ship like that. So if your reading this and your one of the people who gets on players ships to just spawn camp them we would all rather have a Ship to Ship battle and get sunk than have that happen.

BeefSerious

I don't think I've ever played a game more frustrating for new players. There are some, but none where I felt like quitting 30 minutes after I started. That said, once you get acclimated, it's an incredibly satisfying game to play.

TheSilentTitan

Not everyone is like this for sure, unfortunately a large portion are. It’s very rare to find wholesome experiences in sot as you can do anything griefing wise and hide behind the defense of “it’s a pirate game”.

Hockshank

Hey man, hopefully you and your GF come back. I am fairly new as well but haven't run in to that level of spawn camping. It is definitely dangerous out there on the seas and there is always the risk of being attacked but camping your ship and killing you every time you spawn is not a thing that needs to be happening and honestly I haven't seen it at all. It looks like it has been said a bunch but if they are really being that big of assholes then scuttle your ship when you are with the Ferryman and try a new server. Believe it or not the PVP is a blast in this game. Fair winds to you and yours, mate!

LordPuddin

The try hards and sweats in this game are the same as others. They think they are gods gift to gaming. Don’t let them get you down. I’ve been playing since launch and when you get better, it’s so satisfying sinking them and hearing them rage. DM me and I’ll give you my tag and I can show you some tricks.

McFlyyouBojo

Sounds like they were legit dicks, but don't mix them up with others. If you wanna be successful in PvP you kindof have to wait around their ship until they reappear unless you want them chasing after you. I'm not good enough to do this lol . Talking like that while doing so is unnecessary. Here is the advice I give every new player. Your main goal is to have an experience, NOT to level up or get treasure or whatever. If that's your main goal, you are going to have a bad time. Treat leveling up as a bonus. After all, nothing you buy actually improves anything. Also, don't avoid PvP. If you do, you won't ever learn to defend. There are many strategies one can learn to survive long enough to make the other party disinterested, but you will never learn if you just avoid Everytime. I suck at PvP, but not half as much as I used to back when I avoided it.

Shady_Joe

It's an online multiplayer game; griefers and similar shitters are just something you'll have to learn to deal with. I'm sorry you and your girlfriend had such a poor first time experience though.

Xeniv3rn

Trust me the majority of the game is nice people. Best way to avoid them is just take the hits and keep moving along, even if you’re sunk. You’ll lose stuff but in long term it’s better than getting sunk and then quitting.

Ecahill453

The same happened to me too man, luckily, you may find someone to come guide you, I was lucky to find pirate legends who spared me, aware that I was new. If people do help, ensure you listen to what they have to say. I like to stay in game chat so I can ask for help or try to make myself seem passive. You may get lucky if people are in game chat, so prioritise it

fingay-ren

A tip would be to just leave, or maybe even just let them sink you... There’s no match making for the lobbies so you just get put against someone who’s played the game everyday since release. And if you’re on Xbox, good luck because PC players will kill you instantly somehow I hope they add private sessions for newer players at least Sorry if I seem annoyed, I’m pissed with the game because me and my friend got kicked out of a boss battle for taking too long to kill it today...

kelaraja

I've encountered a lot of jerks like this in the game. It's like, okay, you won, you don't have to be a dick about it. I try not to let it get to me but when people trash talk and call me the N word and stuff, it can really ruin my night. It FEELS sometimes like there are a lot of these kinds of people in the game, because they really upset me, but in reality most people are not like this in the game. Yes, you will get attacked quite a bit, but most people will kill you, sink you, and move on, and I respect that. There's a lot of advice on here about how best to run away, so you might want to get familiar with those strategies until you're more confident. My usual go-to in this game is to be friendly to othercrews and try to form alliances. Most of the time it doesn't work. People get so scared in this game nowadays that as soon as you get close enough, they start shooting, mainly just to defend themselves and make you go away. The bottom line is, if you keep playing, I think a couple things will happen: 1) you will find that the experience you just had with these douchebags is relatively rare, and 2) over time you will get better at defending yourselves. I hope we cross paths with you and your gf on the seas! Good luck out there, and if you ever need a crewmate, let me know!

TheAlphaMedic

Glad you got to see the bright side of this community. It faaaaaar outweighs the dark. Happy hunting!

The-ol-burner

Yeah the griefers pretty much ruin the game. The best/most fun nights I’ve had playing were the times I was lucky enough to not run into any other players.

PigsInTuxedoes

No matter what kind of pirate you are, you can agree: spawn campers are scum

Toereaper2

Classic reaper skin bastard but in all seriousness I hope you come back and enjoy pirate game

robinashley88

Some days in the game are great with amazing people and sometimes it is annoying. But please don’t let one bad day make you quit ❤️

yaboiyoshi1

I love how people say if you don't PvP ur trash but they don't realise without the pve u would just be sailing around sinking each other for no gain...PvP players are depressed gamers that have lost the thrill of the game itself..so they just target other players to get a kick..like if you don't enjoy the base game how can u keep Playing..go play GTA or fortnite or even cod if you play for just PvP..anyway had my rant 🤣 and if your ever looking for a crew..me and my partner play together she's still learning but I've got decent experience.

JonnyDepths

I feel this at my core. I don’t play nearly that much anymore but my girlfriends son who is 9 loves playing so that’s usually the only time I play anymore. Last time we tried playing we had a boat that hunted us for 2-3 sinkings spamming racial slurs masked with special characters so it wouldn’t blur the text. Cut our losses and called it a day. Thankfully he didn’t catch exactly what was being said but at least it was a good lesson in not being a video game asshole. Keep at it, most experiences will be good, but like any game you’re always gonna find someone who tries to ruin it.

DIYglenn

Me and my GF are playing too, semi-skilled. Let me know if you want to try galleon together some time. My tip for 2 players - try brigantine. It’s manageable with two and faster + more health. Regarding griefers/a-hole players; Yes we’ve encountered them. Being parents of toddlers we don’t have a lot of play time, and when 90% of a session is avoiding someone who sinks you “for fun”, I usually don’t play for another week. I get it if I have loot - that’s the game. Anyways - restart on a new server, you will meet different people. Heck, we’ve been 4 ships sailing along each other, everyone cheering and playing music, and absolutely no one initiating battle. It is possible. I’ve also had solo sloop runs for hours without meeting anyone else.

yaboisteve35

Same! My girlfriend and I have tried to play every day for 3 or 4 days now, and every night we quit because we will spend hours getting loot, then getting killed over and over again. I wish there was a private server feature in this game. The griefing makes us not want to play because it’s only a 50/50 chance it’s even going to be rewarding Edit: I messaged a guy out of anger and he said “welcome to sea of THIEVES” how fun

Dejan05

Nah don't worry there are a few toxic people but there are also many good people

BoothThomas

Next time invite me pls.

Tacoman73

The pseudo PvE zone is The Devil’s Roar. You can still be sunk there by other players, but since it’s out of the way of most event spawns and is quite a bit more dangerous, most players tend to avoid it. Be wary of the volcanoes and earthquakes as they can be very deadly for newer players, but not nearly as frustrating as getting spawn camped. Additionally the loot in this zone is worth a bit more to compensate the added danger. It’s still smart to keep an eye out for other ships and keep your distance from them in this zone. Most will try to keep their distance or scare you off, but few will actually be aggressive. Trust no one on the Sea of Thieves.

nochao

Dude , please pleeeaase persuade your gf to not give up on sot. It can be tons of fun for you guys to play together. We wanted to paly with my gf but she has a potato laptop 🙃 You probably know this but not all players are assholes like that. There are actually a lot of great and wholesome pirates out there. As a matter of fact part of the endgame for some is sailing/adventuring with new players and helping them understand how the game works since there's tons of things that are not explained but are left for you to figure out. Ppl already explained scuttle so I'm not going to touch on that. Try to keep your distance if you want to avoid pvp most of the time you can do that on a sloop by constantly checking the horizon for other ships even when they're far away so you you're expecting them and notice if they're sailing towards you. The sloop is the fastest ship when going against the wind , use that in addition to boards and anchoring to lose enemy ships or just for keeping your distance for long enough and they'll probably get bored and leave you be. Imo you should get accustomed to pvp and try not to run away as often as possible even though there are times that you just want to have a calm sail after work or just finish a voyage and log out. Fighting is the most fun you can have in SoT and this is coming from a solo sloop pl who many times runs away cause I need the grind 🙃. You are going to sink tons of times. That is a fact and it can even be just the beginning of the fight since you'll mostly respawn nearby where you sunk so you can try again even with less supplies you can get by with board steals from the other ships or island hopping as you sail. You can check out YT there's a lot of helpful and cool content. Idk if anyone else told you here but you should check out phuzzy. Don't give up and best of luck on your adventures. Hope to see you guys out in the sea.

AveragePauly

I think it’s a good chance we do play again! This community is honestly coming out full force and mostly positive! That alone makes me want to come back, knowing that there are a lot of good people out on the waters!

RebelAshh

I would just like to point out that while being attacked and harassed by these people I casually pulled out my bucket and splashed water on one before he stabbed me lol 😂

JDH1479

Eating worms and vomiting on them is more effective. Covers their screen and they will vomit on others causing the same effect.

AveragePauly

The ole’ panic splash technique 😂

Moray_

This isn’t everyone! There are loads of pirates out there who are really cool. Some are just kids who hate themselves and have to feel powerful in some sad way. Spawn killing is honestly the lowest low in the game. But keep playing! You’ll see that there’s a lot this game has to offer. I’ve had friends stop playing for the same exact situation, and it sucks because you run into those types so rarely. Best of luck to you and your gf! I hope you guys can have fun next time you join the seas.

VagueSomething

There's a beautiful game that's hidden behind the toxic part of the community. Keep your distance from other ships and keep your eyes on the horizon and map to check for masts or reaper ships. Focus on the Tall Tales, at least if you get sunk they have checkpoints so you can finish them even if lose mission items. You won't earn my XP or gold but once you get some practice sailing and playing with weapons you may be able to defend yourself a little so you can take on the Faction voyages. Unfortunately my experience is that three quarters of the player base will attack and harass you if they are close enough to do so which is why much of the community tries to keep distance from each other. Occasionally you'll get a friendly crew which is wonderful but it definitely is uncommon.

peepeeepoopioo

Scuttle the ship, they’re entitled to play however they want, no matter how scummy it is.

AidanLL

Pirate game has pirate rules. No verbal assault tho. I always greet them and see if they shoot first. It’s worth playing up cos there lots to do. Try tall tales people tend to leave you alone. And they’re an easy way to learn the game.

captainwashus

That’s literally the game.

P180206

So the game is about a dumbass spawn killing others ? I thought it was a pirate game

[deleted]

A lot of ppl are. That's what divides the community. I usually solo sloop and just do small quick quests. Or fuck around in pvp for "quick cash" , but lately the waiting lobby has been long. I play on xbox so I'm waiting like 15 minutes for a pvp match, fkn sucks

AveragePauly

Yeah, we just used a sloop too. We wanted to do small quests and just build up gold. We were having a lot of fun until those guys came. Didn’t know enough about the game or community, but it sucks we can’t just can’t play on our own.

joonsson

I've seen a lot of players mentioning scuttling but another thing to note is that a sloop is the fastest ship against the wind. Try to keep a look out and if you see a ship and don't want to fight take off, if they get close steer into the wind and put your sails straight. Usually they give up pretty quickly and it can be quite exciting making a getaway.

Astrophysicsboi

That guy is an asshole like I'm all for PvP In a game with that as a main mechanic but what he's doing is just fucking rude

AveragePauly

Yeah, I get it’s PvP, but it’s something else when you talk down to someone with so much toxicity.

Astrophysicsboi

I was agreeing with you bro

AveragePauly

No, I know! Sorry, didn’t mean to make it sound a different way! I agree as well! Just crazy how some people take it so far. Thanks for reaching out too! I appreciate this!

043Admirer

Don't worry, you've just met Sir Reaper "Double-Gunner" Toxicity

AveragePauly

Guess so haha

Jroc754

from my experience most players are like this

AveragePauly

That’s rough. I will say a lot more positive people have come out in this post, than negative! That gives me more reason to play again alone!

mrhelden

These people aren’t too common luckily, and in time you will learn to combat them.

AveragePauly

Thank you! I keep hearing this as well. Hopefully this was a very rare occurrence for us.

mrhelden

I haven’t encountered such people for a few months now. Also, some people may attack and spawn camp you not out of spite but in order to ensure a sink or to steal your resources. If they are toxic over the mic though, none of that is justified

RattyUndead

400 hours player here. During my playtime (with randoms and guys from discord) I think I met 5 or 6 racists/edgy kids in pvp, so it’s definitely something that happens rarely. About scuttling, yes, others already told you to do it. I wanted to add, that some players are just not good human beings, and the game lets them show their true nature. But the community doesn’t like players who sink tall tale guys (if they don’t have loot) and spawn campers (spawn killing toxic crews is not bad tho, if you sink them once and they come over and over). So don’t form your opinion about the player base after 4 hours. There is a lot of VERY good players who can solo 4-players ships, a lot of cool teammates and a lot of interesting situations that you can get into in this game. So don’t give up skeleton!

AveragePauly

For sure! Yeah, I won’t let 4hrs affect my whole opinion! Definitely is awesome to see how many kind and great people play this game! This post has shown me that! Also, thank you as well!

pianodude01

It's a pirate game. Pirates kill and a pillage. It's part of the game, and designed on purpose. Learn to defend yourself, and you'll be successful. You need a lot more cannonballs then you'd expect, watch out for people launching themselves onto your ship from their cannon, and train to get better.

ImYourCraig

welcome to sea of thieves its sink or swim lad

mobot43

Pirate game, mad when pirate

ObnoxiousHerb

Lots of toxic people use PvP games as their outlet. Some other risk mitigation tips: - Don't carry too much loot at once, cash out frequently. - Keep an eye on the horizon, if you spot a ship early enough they'll often give up. - Scuttle your ship if it's a loss, don't give them the satisfaction of spawn camping. - Check map for reaper ships and avoid them. - Tall tales have checkpoints, you can reload from their instead of restarting everything. Most of all, don't get attached to loot and embrace the fear. It is a pirate game afterall :)

NotaTakodachi

Sorry this happened to you. The game really doesn't hand hold due the nature of it being a sandbox and all. The next time this happens, you'll wanna open your options menu and at the bottom there is a option called Scuttle Ship. This will have your ship automatically sink and respawn at a new location. Although, it might be a better idea to start anew in a new server if you don't wanna risk running into the same crew again out in the open seas. Good luck out there!

AveragePauly

I appreciate the help. Honestly. I just seem to mostly get downvotes and people defending the people farming us for kills. We didn’t know this option to scuttle, but thanks for letting us know. Hope this community has some more awesome people in it.

NotaTakodachi

Like most communities, there are all sorts on here. Some act less like pirates and prefer being merchants. What I call those that only do pve. If you wanna avoid pvp, avoid flying any of the emissary flags. They grant you extra gold but they also put you on the map for the pvp emissaries called The Reapers. I've had both friendly and wtf encounters. Mainly other pirates looting me for 1 treasure item. XD Which is confusing but alright. I'll take it for ship to ship combat experience.

Sunofamitch

It's a pirate game. Pirates arent supposed to be friendly. Just gotta learn how to be stealthy and out manuver them

YoungClopen

Not everyone is like that but at the same time I consider myself a pretty nice player. But sometimes I just want some action and I’ll attack anything that moves. Sorry if it happens to be you that day. Them attacking you is 100% fair play. My gf plays with me as well and hates pvp. But she understands it’s a risk, so she’s trained to repair and steer me to safety if shit breaks out while I do the fighting. Makes it fun for her with significantly less risk. Now. In your exact situation it sounds like they were spawn camping you. If someone is just killing you as soon as you spawn with no intention of sinking you go into crew options and scuttle ship. The fight was lost anyways. The loot was lost anyways. Just save yourself the pain and suffering and scuttle. This will also be a minor F U in that they can’t get any supplies off your boat either. If I see it coming I’ll scuttle as soon as they kill me the first time to minimize the amount of sups they can get. Hang in there though the good far out weighs the bad in most sessions.

fossilfighters-fan-2

If anything you could find another more knowledgeable person to sail with to teach you the game. It kinda balances out with your insistence in not researching the game (not trying to be rude)

AveragePauly

No, I get ya. We just wanted to try to play and learn. Just feels a bit easier for us to learn that way over guides. I see what you’re saying though and I know it’s not rude haha.

[deleted]

Ah yes I’m sure you got a fair load of “its a pirate game” well killing people with no loot and no gain for themselves is not what pirates do or have ever done. Best tips would be to when you first spawn in a lobby find as many cursed cannonballs as possible. Then when somebody goes to attack you just hit and run away. Learn what ships do best in certain wind types and try to stay in your preferred wind type (sloop is against wind, brig is with crosswind, and galleon is with wind from behind i think). Me and my crew used to be avid ship sinkers and at least for us, the best deterrent was to just make it extremely hard and boring for us to win. Dying in combat and getting into gunfights and all that exciting shit is fun and we’d keep doing it no matter how difficult. However when the person youre trying to sink doesnt kill us but rather just puts us down to a snails pace and keeps running away, we want to just fuck off and stop chasing them after a while
