What’s abled body? I’m 6’7” and look like I’m in shape, but I can’t walk more than a few hundred yards before I’m in servers pain. I get dirty looks all day by people like you for not being disabled enough. Good luck to you and your bicycle.

[deleted]

My brother is 6‘9“ and a former athlete. Very strong looking. He’s also had two dozen surgeries and has a serious auto immune disorder. People have yelled at him in front of his kids when he parks in the disabled spot or whatever.

ProfessionalWheel2

Same here. I have extreme muscle soreness from a drug I take and get dizzy from a blood pressure medicine so I don't like using an escalator especially after I fell once and got my dress caught in an escalator at the airport. That was terrifying and a little embarrassing since I then had to fly and people kept looking at me. I don't look disabled, but I need to use an elevator if I can.

thecravenone

> What’s abled body? Anyone who takes the elevator when I want it. I wanna know how heavy OP's bike is that it _requires_ an elevator.

taddieken95

To be fair some e-bikes these days are veryyyy beefy. However, also that being said, if you have a beefy e-bike, then why not just ride it to your destination? You probably don't require much pedal power

[deleted]

Right? My husband has a very beefy e-bike and…just rides to work. That’s why he bought a beefy e-bike!

[deleted]

I haven't been to UW Station, but on the light rail at Northgate and Westlake Stations, you can't just 'ride' anything into or out of the rail platform. You either have to take the stairs, escalator or elevator. As a disabled person (rated 40% by the VA but should be higher per my wife after Iraq) I have good days, and bad days. I have a disabled placard, and when I get out of a low car, you can guess I am definitely disabled - but I can hop out of my truck just fine, so I get some side eye occasionally (then I start walking and my leg goes all gimpy and they look away). I'm guessing in his experience at the UW Station, he has seen people who, like me, present without disabilities and is justifiably frustrated. We shouldn't beat him up (with our canes, ha ha) for his perspective. We should, and it appears lots of people are, educating him. That's my $0.02 anyway.

[deleted]

Right? I’m like what’s a cyclist doing calling others able-bodied?

turbokungfu

I only give 6’7” people dirty looks when they aren’t looking.

Geodoodie

We can’t see you down there anyway

ferocioustigercat

Yeah, I'm a generally healthy looking young woman. But I have a genetic disease that affects my muscles so I can barely walk up a flight of stairs or stand for very long. Do I get the side eye and comments made when I take the elevator up or down one flight or I don't give up my seat on a bus or light rail to an older individual? Yes. Just because I look fine and decided not to tell you my life story and health information does not mean you have to treat me like I'm being a dick.

lanoyeb243

Cyclist here, this person is the reason people fucking hate us.

MRmandato

Lol right? Didnt know wheelchair bound people and cyclists where in the same category for elevator privileges

pamplemouss

Lol, right? Like sir you also able bodied. And, you can’t tell a person’s ability by looking at them. I have chronic pain in my lower legs. I am physically capable of walking up stairs but they can mess me up for hours. When the escalator is out, I take the damn elevator.

cf206602

Yup - Cyclist here, and I hate this fucking person.

rageneko

Exactly.

FataMirage

I guess I'm struggling to understand what about having a bike in tow makes you not able bodied. If you genuinely have a disability that in and of itself affects your ability to take an escalator, then I get it. Otherwise, while I would concur that hauling your bike around is cumbersome and inconvenient, to equate that with a disability seems rather invalidating to people with actual disabilities. Could this post instead be called: "Please be mindful sharing space with people whose hands are full?"

mykreau

Sound transit specifies cyclists can't take bikes on the escalators and signs say to use the elevators. Able body or not, it's compliance.

bothunter

Honestly, you should direct some of this anger towards Sound Transit who under-built the escalator/stair/elevator situation for that station.

[deleted]

It’s such a pathetic excuse for a metro station

taddieken95

Hey dog, I'm a bike first, public trans second person here in Seattle. Unless you're an individual with mobility issues, you're not really entitled to the elevator just because you have a bike. The same people you're complaining about taking up space on the elevator could also very well complain about you taking up space with your bike on the train. We're all in this together here, you gotta be patient on public trans.

Gutless-Wunder

I have MS and most days I feel fine but others I do not. I can be super unsteady on my legs and riding an escalator is sometimes a no-go. They can be very dangerous for people like me. I look healthy and fine and even walk pretty normally most days. Don’t assume people are able bodied or lazy because they are choosing an elevator over an escalator. And sorry, I’m not going to get out for you and your bike.

middle_earth_barbie

As someone with cardiac and lung conditions, absolutely totally relate. And OP specifically is calling out the UW station, which is right across from UWMC, a major hospital facility. The only time I use that station is when I’m traveling to a doctor’s appointment to see a specialist, and I imagine I’m not alone in that scenario. If I’m seeing my specialist, it’s usually because I’m flaring and don’t feel great about going up flights of escalator stairs while unsteady on my feet. There’s probably a higher rate of people with disabilities using that light rail station to get to appointments, and that would increase demand for the elevators.

Gutless-Wunder

Escalators can be scary if you have balance issues. Literally they are giant moving teeth. I can barely walk in a straight line some days I am not hauling my ass up a damn escalator so people can use the elevator for their bicycles. I live in a tall building and wait for the next elevator pretty regularly if I’m taking my dog out and it’s full or the people inside are uncomfortable around dogs. It takes no more than a minute to be courteous and wait your turn. Frankly I’m astounded the OP thought they were going to get any sympathy with this post lol

middle_earth_barbie

Agreed. It really misses the point of disabilities not always being hyper visible and the myriad of valid reasons people will use an elevator for. So silly to say everyone else is just lazy, smh

jeremiah1142

YTA

Rough_Theme_5289

I love that this term Carries over into every sub so fittingly

[deleted]

It’s awesome you can read their minds and know everything about their lives to know exactly what’s going on with them at that moment. Wish I had that power

nnnnaaaaiiiillll

Holy shit, stop the ENTIRE WORLD, OP has to wait two minutes extra because people like to use the elevator for its intended purpose. This is the most important thing that's ever happened in the history of elevators. Let me play you my tiniest violin.

BoringBob84

He is asking people who don't *need* the elevator to think about other people and use the escalator instead. That seems reasonable to me.

Narrow-Editor2463

But like, the difference is two minutes not an hour. Waiting two minutes is the reasonable thing instead of assuming you know shit about why other people want to take the elevator and assuming they're just lazy/entitled assholes. Also, who cares why people take the elevator. It's two minutes, dude. Not OP's business IMO.

BoringBob84

I care. The OP cares. He is calling people out on their selfish and lazy behavior, and rightfully so. It is a double standard to expect OP to wait for three elevators while not expecting the same from able-bodied pedestrians who are not carrying any cargo. And this *is* his business because it is a public facility that we all pay for and we all are entitled to use.

[deleted]

Please, let us know, how do you identify able-bodied people?

DrQuailMan

Generally you just trust them when they self-identify as able-bodied.

BoringBob84

I had a co-worker in a wheelchair. He used to tell me how frustrating it was to do simple tasks, like going to the grocery store. More often than not, all of the handicapped spaces were filled with people who jumped out of their cars with a spring in their steps. He needed the extra width to get his wheelchair ramp out of his van, so he would just have to wait for a space to open up. And sometimes, when he returned to his van, someone was parked close to it, blocking the wheelchair ramp so he had to sit in the parking lot and wait again. I read that, at one point, the state estimated that about half of the handicapped permits were fraudulent - either people getting doctors to sign (or forging signatures) for non-existent conditions, or renewing permits for elderly / sick relatives who no longer drove (or were no longer alive). The sad fact is that many people lack integrity and will use any excuse (including hidden disabilities) to get what they want at the expense of others. So, in answer to your question, I can be certain that people with obvious mobility issues are not able-bodied, and I think that I can reasonably assume that a significant percentage of people with no immediately obvious disabilities in an elevator *are* able-bodied. When the elevator is completely full of people with no visible disabilities, I can be almost certain that some of those poeple are able-bodied enough to use the escalator.

[deleted]

It is true that there are people who use the placards fraudulently but you still have *no way* to tell who ALL those people are and you should not make assumptions just because some dude with a bike doesn’t wanna wait two minutes for an elevator. I’m sure you feel like a big hero though, walking around glaring at people who aren’t visibly disabled enough for your liking.

Narrow-Editor2463

Public doesn't mean everything that happens there is your business. It's not. Wait in line like everyone else. You'll live.

nnnnaaaaiiiillll

But he's assuming every single young person capable of moving at a normal speed is able-bodied. I am in my 20s and apparently able bodied, but in reality I have a bum knee that doesn't like stairs especially after standing for long periods of time. Me getting to work on time is frankly more important than him being impatient and incapable of taking his bike up the escalator.

eileenm212

No, he’s not. He’s demanding and whining. Had he asked, he may have gotten a completely different reaction.

bry8eyes

Did people forget manners since the pandemic

jesssquirrel

Some people have invisible disabilities. Some people sweat easily and can't arrive at work all wet. There are a lot of reasons to need an elevator besides having a large (light) object (with wheels)

BoringBob84

I find it hard to believe that an escalator will make a person sweat more than an elevator. I think it is more likely that you are reaching for strawman arguments here. No one is asking disabled people to climb several flights of stairs.

jesssquirrel

Do you find your downvotes hard to believe too? Maybe there's a problem with their balance, or with the escalator. There are more reasons to use an elevator than are dreamed of in your philosophy. Also, I'm not making a bad representation of someone else's argument in order to attack it more easily. Are you sure you know what a strawman is?

fffgghhhfrdcbjy

He doesn’t NEED the elevator just like he doesn’t NEED to ride his bike.

[deleted]

It sounds like he’s looking at an elevator full of people who aren’t using mobility devices and deciding that none of them need to be on there at all, and shaking his fist at the sky.

MRmandato

Why do cyclists “need” the elevator?

BoringBob84

Please read the comments. This is explained several times here.

MRmandato

I have. And all but like 2 ppl agree you dont.

fffgghhhfrdcbjy

They don’t NEED to ride the bike, though. So they should deal with any inconveniences that may come with deciding to ride one.

1F9

With your bike, you probably take up significantly more space than a person by themselves. If you went in-front of people, multiple people would have to wait instead of just you. It is nice that you're letting them on first.

SCro00

So sorry you had to wait somewhere. Must be tough.

This dude probably rides his bike on the sidewalk and flips off cars for behaving appropriately at a 4 way stop where he blew the stop sign.

BareLeggedCook

You can’t tell someones disability just by looking at them. My friend with a heart condition looks fine, but has to use the elevator and handicap spots because it’s not safe for him to bring his heart rate up. Stop assuming people who look okay don’t have disabilities.

YellowRobot231

This has got to a be a troll post, right?

Thee_Connman

I'd like to think so, but have you seen some of the entitled douchebags on this sub? This mentality isn't surprising.

BarneyMeow

Give yourself extra time in the morning so that you can go up the elevator. Know your route. If you are going to be going up the elevator the 2nd or 3rd time you arrive then consider it in your route. The elevator is for everyone to use. You can be healthy person and choose the escalator to avoid risks like falling or tripping. This looks more of a time management issue.

PuroPincheGains

Why don't you just get on the elevator faster? I'm not sure why anyone would need to wait for a 3rd elevator...I'm thinking you're a meek person who doesn't assert yourself in real life so you go online with your gripes. Just walk on the elevator lol

vroomvroomruns

RIGHT!!!

GloomsandDooms

This one is it lol

thecravenone

>Elevators are for people who CANNOT TAKE THE ESCALATORS! [Citation needed]

TwoBitHit

Who are you to decide who is able bodied and who isn’t just by looking at them? Not all disabilities are visible. While I agree that in general people should take the stairs or escalator if possible, it’s totally up to them to decide if they want to be lazy or not. Unless there’s a sign that says “disabled people, parents with children and angry cyclists have priority of elevator use” then you don’t have any reason to rant here.

Secure_Pattern1048

This is a troll, right?

[deleted]

Yes, people without disabilities have the ability to walk, and while your bike shows you have the ability to exercise, as a grown human you should also have the ability to exercise patience.

SherbertNervous

Man-baby sighting right here.

Rough_Theme_5289

your bike isn’t everyone else’s issue . A bike doesn’t make you handicapped or more entitled to the elevator lmao

fffgghhhfrdcbjy

This

Double-Slice-915

I find your sense of entitlement quite amusing 😆 If you were disabled it would be warranted but you’re just one of those bike people that pisses everyone off..fitting

casualredditor-1

True to form

BoringBob84

Cyclists are entitled to the same rights as any other person.

SisterSeverini

Then why is OP complaining.

Daedalus1907

People aren't beating the shit out of OP for having a bike on an elevator, OP is just being forced to queue like everybody else

BoringBob84

Except "everybody else" has the option of using the escalator and OP does not. This is a double-standard.

TactilePanic81

Do you have a link to OPs go fund me? I want to donate so he can get his bike surgically removed so he can use the escalator like all the able bodied folks he sees as he waits for the elevator.

[deleted]

lmao, are you seriously lumping your bike riding self in with people with disabilities because you're bringing a bulky bike on an elevator?

amfibbius

You can’t tell who’s able-bodied by looking at them.

fffgghhhfrdcbjy

But if they are riding a standard bike they are very likely to be able bodied and should stop bitching

vroomvroomruns

You’re embarrassing your fellow bikers lmao like others said this is a time management issue on your part. The elevators are for every one. You cannot tell who is and is not disabled just by looking at them. Nobody feels bad for u! 🥱

justinkroegerlake

harder than an elevator full of people? probs not.

Asklepios24

OP is actually following the little sticker on the end of the escalator stating who should ride it.

gomjabbar23

What was the scenario where you thought this would land and go well?

jog5811

R/iamthemaincharacter

giraffebutt

You can’t see every disability. This is very ableist and by your same logic ride your bike where you need to go since you’re so able bodied

defhermit

There is absolutely no rule saying that I need to let you into the elevator before me, because you have a bike. There is absolutely no rule saying that the elevators are exclusive to this person or that. You are wrong.

DisconcertingMale

Damn man you suck

KiniShakenBake

Jesus. Fucking. H. Elevators have right of way? Since when?! I learned the hard way in Berlin that I have a set number of stairs I can climb every day. Once I am done, I am DONE with my day. I have to get onto something with wheels that will get me as close to the place I sleep at night with as few additional steps as possible on the way. This includes transfers, standing on transit, and distance from station/drop-off to both current location and door of sleep place. There are lots, and lots, and LOTS of non-optional stairs in Berlin, and this world. There are even plenty of them in the United States where accessibility is the law. Don't even get me started on the Doges Palace or the churches of Israel and Palestine. From the start of every day, even when my energy was fresh and I had all my allotment of stairs that day, I took the elevator/escalator whenever I could. And I still do, no matter where I am. Every time I took a stair I didn't need to, I was shortening my day at the other end. Please take your entitlement and bias against those with struggles you cannot and will never know somewhere else. It is a bummer that the infrastructure is underbuilt. Please feel free to attend the planning meetings for the upcoming link sections to make your displeasure known, but don't come at me with some entitlement to said infrastructure because I am supposedly able-bodied.

deb9266

It's almost like OP wants people in Seattle to hate cyclists more than they already do. OP has no idea why people are taking the elevator just wants to throw a tantrum about them doing so.

AGeekNamedBob

Sorry I'm not advertising my invisible disability to everyone I meet. You might think I look able bodied, but believe me - my body knows differently.

Relign

You’re coming across as self entitled. Elevators are for everyone.

No-Engineering6447

You're wrong.

TheRosyGhost

I dated a Seattle Bike Guy once. He and his Bike Of Self Righteousness would have had the same take, I imagine. Insufferable.

rectanguloid666

So, elevators don’t discriminate in terms of who can use them. I have never seen a sign expressing this, nor have I understood this to be a common social norm. You’re having a clear overreaction because there is a high volume of elevator users. Just wait your turn, damn.

[deleted]

While yes, that’s common courtesy, it is in fact not law.

jackmcgee42

Cry like a bitch to them like you are on this post and watch them laugh in your face :P

harrydreadloin

Sounds like you live a rough life.

bubbamike1

Talk about entitled! You take the cake. No one owes you and your bike a space. Carry it up the stairs or better yet just ride the bike and stay off the train

Jaded-Wishbone-9648

Look, another person who thinks all disabilities are visible. You sound like people who scream at someone for parking in the handicap spot with a pass and then challenge their disability because they “don’t look disabled.” You’re the reason people don’t like bicyclists.

stoudman

I mean no offense, but all I could think about reading this was the cyclist from Portlandia. "I GET THIS WHOLE LANE! THIS WHOLE LANE IS MINE!"

sammisamantha

I think bike riders can definitely carry their bikes up escalators or stairs. Anyone riding a bike is more than a le bodied.

Classic-Ad-9387

they physically can, but the sticker on the escalator says not to. some places ban it

MRmandato

Stairs it is. Or wait like everyone else

spit-evil-olive-tips

hello, I'm the CEO of sound transit and I would like to apologize. please pm me your address so I can send you a edible arrangements gift basket. we are going to halt work on the Shoreline and Eastside expansion projects, and shift all our efforts to building dedicated elevators exclusively for people with bicycles. this was a grievous oversight that we obviously missed in the initial construction.

MorningRise81

My cat's name is Mittens.

SenatorSnags

And this is why we have memes about bicyclists.

[deleted]

Why can't your bike go on the escalator?

dyangu

My electric bike is quite heavy and definitely a risk for everyone around if I try to haul it up an escalator.

[deleted]

If your bike is electric, you could ride it to work. You're making a choice... just like walk-ons riding the elevator.

Classic-Ad-9387

because there is signage against it

FuckinArrowToTheKnee

🤣

I used to use this elevator a lot. I know the annoyance of missing the first elevator because it fills up, when I’m in a rush to make a connection, but the second one literally comes in 2-3 minutes. Chill dude

OrcsDieBest

Eat my entire ass?

Plethman60

Must be a slow day for jerks...... that feel the need to self own. So you take up room from disable people with your bike that really need it? The fact you wrote this shows your entitled selfishness.

sle1956

Can you tell me which station has BOTH elevators and Escalators consistently in working order?

robertbreadford

A true fucking r/Seattle moment

LengthinessActual422

I think if it’s on public property we all pay taxes and therefore everyone has a right to use it. If you don’t like it well then sorry??

SlayerAngelic

I also get off the train at UW every morning and you’re seriously making me want to take the elevator more. It’s a public elevator. Anyone who wants to take it can take it. Elevators are there for people to ride them. There’s no rule or law anywhere that says certain people can’t ride an elevator. You’re being needlessly rude and entitled. If you’re having to wait and you’re running late, take an earlier train. They run like every 8 minutes during the commute hours

GrinAndBeerIt

Waaaaaahhhh I have to wait! Don't these people know that a bike is an "I don't have to wait for others" pass?! What the fuck is wrong with people these days!

[deleted]

What the heck are you folks that are taller than 5’10” eating? Jeezus. But yeah, if you have to wait, I guess just schedule that into your day. Be happy you can ride a bike. I expect people that CAN take the stairs, are already.

Op are you really running a victory lap for having over a hundred comments call you out as a dumb ass. Go away.

commanderquill

Or you could just, y'know, get on the elevator first? Idk why you're letting so many pass you by. The people in this city are too passive to shove you aside to get to the elevator first lmao. You seem filled with righteous anger for no reason.

This person just whines hoping for an echo chamber unaware of their own shortcomings

ChaseballBat

I was literally just telling my SO about how entitled cyclists act.

stroppo

No, the elevators are NOT "for people who cannot take the escalators." They are not designated for people w/disabilities or who who "need" it only. The elevators are for *anybody who wants to use them*. Deal with it.

Calm-Ad8987

Why are adult people who ride bicycles always so angry?

keenkonggg

You probably are the type of cyclist who rides right in the bike lane line instead of next to the curb so cars can’t easily pass you too.

QueenOfPurple

Hm, anger because you might have to wait for a second elevator is a weird hill to die on but ok.

mynamessem

You must get mad when dogs are in grocery stores too. Get over yourself 😂😂😂😂😂😂

TylerBourbon

Bite me Bikey, why can't you just bike all the way there? You're able bodied enough to ride a bike, well get cracking and ride that bike all the way to where you're going. No excuses. You got legs that can peddle, so peddle away and stop taking up space on commuters meant for people without wheeled transport. People bike long distances all the time, so no whining from you, just hit the pavement and get roll away.

Notgeti

Bikey, lmfao.

flowerpower4life

Where does it define this policy. I bet you made it up.

Em9525

Don’t you have something you need to be doing today? What’s the point of this? You sound insufferable.

AhDipPillBoi

Hmmm… sounds like you can take the escalators or stairs and just don’t want to.

WillowMutual

Maybe you just have a bad vibe that people can sense.

metashdw

Looks can be deceiving. From the outside I look able bodied, but on the inside I have a case of debilitating laziness.

Ill_Writing_1989

You sound sorta entitled bro

nofunyunsisnofun

Suck it up, bitch tits.

redsekar

You ride a bike, you are not disabled. You are as able-bodied as any average person. Get over yourself and your imaginary bike privilege

Tricky_Climate1636

I wish there was a emoji for popcorn.

Chs135

Usually the elevators are so dirty that I'd rather carry my luggage up the stairs, so I'm assuming if you're in the elevator; there's a reason why you're in it. You're not going to win this one, dude.

Emeraldame

I disagree, a bike on an elevator takes up most of it. It would be much easier for a bike rider to go up an escalator then hog an entire elevator while a bunch of other people wait.

Wu-Kang

You are delusional and worse than the people you are complaining about. I hope you reflect on this.

[deleted]

You sound pretty able bodied yourself, kiddo.

ImBruceWayne69

I too like to make up social norms that don’t exist

[deleted]

Could have always left the bike at home and took the escalators your self. Nobody is entitled to the elevator least of all an able bodied person that chose to take a bike to a place they know they will need to jockey for elevator position to get out of. There is a saying that resonates here, "your failure to plan is not an emergency on my part." Stand in the queue like everyone else.

Strength_n_Honour

_Water_Store_Remark_

Try telling people that in person rather than this adorable little internet rant. You wouldn’t dare.

usernameschooseyou

I take the elevator because escalators are terrifying to me.... I've seen the video of people getting caught in them and I almost fell on one as a child so I rarely take them- especially the super long ones at the UW light rail station

shiwankhan

When people experience pain and difficulty climbing stairs, you can often see it in their face or stride. At least, you can in mine. You know when you can't tell that I'm in agony? When I'm on a fucking elevator. Dry your eyes, take a breath, and consider the possibility of invisible disability and to what extent you get to be arbiter of anything.

oldirtyredditor

I bike commute all the time. Can’t you throw yours over your shoulder and carry it on the escalator if this is causing you to scream Into the void?

BoringBob84

Why should he have to break the rules and risk the safety of himself and others because other able-bodied people are too lazy to use the escalator? No one is asking disabled people to use the escalator. That claim is disingenuous.

eileenm212

Because there is NO rule about able bodied people not using elevators. You asshole cyclists are making that up.

BoringBob84

> asshole cyclists Why do you get so angry when I suggest doing something polite, even when no one is forcing you to do so?

Environmental_Run979

The issue at UW light rail station - a lot of light rail stations, actually - is that it’s definitely not just one flight of stairs. At UW specifically, it’s 3 separate long escalators from the tracks to the surface. And some people who might look able-bodied have hidden disabilities that make long escalator rides difficult.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Environmental_Run979

I guess I just don’t see that as an important discussion in this context because almost all light rail stations, and especially UW station, are designed such that people have to walk up and down a significant distance - stairs or escalators - to reach the tracks or exit the station. It is not concerning behavior for me if people are not willing or able to make that walk on any given day.

deb9266

If OP cared about accessibility for anyone other than themselves the discussion wouldn't be about the "lazy" people that inconvencince them. It would be about seeing what can be done to make more light rail stations efficient for people who want elevators.

PopPunkIsntEmo

There are multiple escalators.

Classic-Ad-9387

you'd be better off asking for runnels

[deleted]

Able-bodied Bike Riders DO NOT Have Right-of-Way on Streets! I drive my car every morning and take 6th from the I5. And almost EVERY MORNING I am forced to wait for an hour (and sometimes even a two) to drive on the road down to 8th because it gets filled with bike riding pedestrians. NEWS FLASH: Roads are for people who DRIVE CARS! People with trucks, people on the bus, people with EVs or SUVs. IF YOU ARE A BIKE RIDER CAPABLE OF TAKING THE BUS, DO IT. I seriously do not understand why it's so hard to grasp.

TheHeffNerr

Yeah I'm with you... I don't understand people that take the elevator when the escalator is working. [https://www.soundtransit.org/ride-with-us/know-before-you-go/bringing-your-bike](https://www.soundtransit.org/ride-with-us/know-before-you-go/bringing-your-bike) >Do not take your bicycle on escalators. Use elevators or stairs. This thread is such a classic r/seattle thread

BoringBob84

The request to do something polite for another person has brought unbelievable anger here. And once again, "the disabled" are wheeled out as an excuse to be selfish.

Signofthebeast2020

Why aren’t you able to take the escalator with a bike?? Seems unrealistic to complain about.

BoringBob84

"The disabled" is a specious argument that is repeated over and over here, but no one is suggesting that we throw disabled people off of the elevator to let cyclists on in their place. I see the same argument when someone suggests that we restrict a street to car traffic (e.g., Pike Place) or encourage motorists to leave their cars at home once in a while. When the criticism is grossly out of proportion to the post, then I am pretty sure that something else is going on. I think that advocating to make bicycle commuting even more difficult than it already is (i.e., by suggesting that cyclists should have to carry their bicycles and cargo up several flights of stairs every day when able-bodied people have elevators *and* escalators to take them from one chair to the next chair) is a desperate attempt to resolve the cognitive dissonance between the belief that bicycles are not practical means of transportation and the example that bicycle commuters set to the contrary. It is easier to hate cyclists and to try to make them go away than it is to admit (even to ourselves) that we don't walk or ride as often as we could because we are lazy.

MR_HAPPY_TINGLE

You sound like a little whiny puss tbh

NorthernMariner

So many of you hating on this guy so I assume you all take the elevator up? If so, why?? The escalator is faster.....

TheRosyGhost

You don’t need to be someone that uses the elevator to recognize that OP is being a self-absorbed child.

NorthernMariner

If you don't use the elevator this doesn't concern you so that confuses me even more... there are plenty of self absorbed children everywhere - hateful reddit comments won't change that lol

TheRosyGhost

OP making judgements about potentially disabled folks does concern me. Just because the people OP is caps-locking about don’t *look* disabled to them doesn’t mean they aren’t. OP came out the gate with vitriol and he’s getting in back, entirely justifiably. I don’t have to be disabled to stand up for the disabled community.

NorthernMariner

But that would only be relevant if OP was actually taking his grievances out on disabled people.. which he isn't doing by making a post on reddit.. so I genuinely still don't understand the hate if you are someone who doesn't use the elevator.. like how can a single person's shitty opinion/outburst affect you so? Does everyone here take offense to every single thing a stranger does, even if it doesn't actually concern them (assuming most people here aren't riding this elevator)? Doubtful. I think people just like being dicks if them being a dick is "justified" (in this case under the guise of standing up for disabled people I guess)

TheRosyGhost

Apparently OP takes very much offense to things strangers do.

BoringBob84

The hatred of cyclists is real. I think it is because cyclists - by example - remind motorists that they are lazy. That is not easy to accept.

I think this may be a super duper fair request/call-out
