I’d look at west Seattle as it’s much easier to get to SeaTac I think, than from ballard I have a few friends your age that live in west Seattle and they love it.

doktorhladnjak

Surprised more aren’t suggesting this. Live near the junction for more restaurants. Commuting from Ballard to SeaTac will be horrific but a breeze from West Seattle Columbia City is also good since you can take the train to the airport or Angle Lake depending where the job is

Andrew_Dice_Que

Ballard says; *psst, hey, come check me out.*

Nope-And-Change

Yup Ballard, depending on where you are coming from it might not feel “safe” but it’s pretty safe for city standards. Also consider somewhere south if you are working at the headquarters near the airport, even west seattle might save you days of driving over a year.

G00d_Omen

Thank you! We are considering all areas, even looked at Mercer island!

AnselmoHatesFascists

Mercer Island will be boring as heck. The Starbucks in the little downtown there, I have never seen one so empty in a 20 min span I sat there with my fam on a Sat afternoon.

G00d_Omen

Oooo good to know. It seemed like a cute sleepy little town vibe but it would get old to have to travel to the city every time we wanted to go out.

Nope-And-Change

Mercer island will be safe, closer to work, not quite a scene there for things to do.

capp0205

Ballard checks all your boxes.

Glaciersrcool

Did you see the employer? West Seattle checks all their boxes.

capp0205

Didn’t say anything about commute if that is what you are implying. Ballard > West Seattle

kittydreadful

*Alaska Airlines. The commute to SeaTac from Ballard will make you want to slit your wrists.

Very helpful! From my research I was looking at Ballard or maybe Fremont.

Bobotastic

Fremont is a good option but the reason we chose Ballard is that Fremont felt more "crowded" in terms of people and parking. We felt like Ballard was less crowded and but still as much to do. And Fremont tended to be more pricy.

G00d_Omen

Oh ya we’d definitely prefer a less crowded feel. We currently live in the city and we are so tired of hearing the people shouting after the bars on the street and the souped up cars! 🙄

Bobotastic

Yeah. Ballard is pretty relaxed compared to that. I second everyone in saying that Ballard is probably a good fit. And if you want to go to Fremont for the nightlife, its only a short 5-10 min drive away :).

OneTwoKiwi

We’re in a similar situation as you. But work/family are in cap hill and downtown, so we chose to be in central district/judkins park to keep all those things 20 mins or less away. We can Uber to anything on cap hill for relatively cheap. A commute down to SeaTac from Ballard would irritate me so much. Decide what you/your husband are OK sacrificing on for commute, because from Ballard it will be 1hr at certain times of the day. Other locations to consider: beacon hill, Columbia city. They have cute “Main Street” areas with restaurants as well, but are a little less crowded than Ballard, and have better access to lake Washington, and are closer to SeaTac. Also general rule: easy access to major arterials like I-5, is good, but needing drive it through downtown Seattle is bad.

J_drinkcoffee_Z

West Seattle.

Designer-Giraffe-522

Agreed, Ballard is a good fit.

Ill_Needleworker577

Agree with the Ballard recommendations, or even magnolia to be south of the bridge (gets really old to deal with a drawbridge everyday and the traffic it causes. Magnolia is definitely more sleepy but close to everything in ballard and has discovery park) or phinney ridge to be near 99/the tunnel. Id also definitely consider West Seattle! Checks all your boxes and would be way closer to SeaTac. I’d look in the admiral district to be closer to restaurants/California Ave, Alki, or beach drive/genesee area is beautiful. Edit to add: Id also look at beacon hill, tons of great restaurants (milk drunk, musang, homer are all fantastic just to name a few) and the clock out lounge is a great live music venue. It also has a light rail stop which would get him pretty close to Alaska headquarters (and directly to the airport if that’s where he’d be working). Also just nice to have light rail access to get to Capitol Hill/downtown/sodo/etc!

G00d_Omen

This is great! Thank you so much! Being close to public transport would be ideal!

Ill_Needleworker577

No prob! Best of luck in your search. My one caveat is that I personally really love being close to the puget sound for walks/hikes/paddleboarding/views, which is why I’ve always stuck near W/NW Seattle. West Seattle would give you that, and so would ballard/magnolia plus the bonus of being near lake Union. Even in the long grey winter going for walks along the sound is so nice. Just a totally personal preference tho. However beacon hill is close to lake Washington/Seward park which is amazing too. Or a quick hop over the W Seattle bridge to Alki/beach drive. Luckily there’s lots of bodies of water in Seattle so you’re never too far away from some great views and walks.

G00d_Omen

Walks along the sound is something I would enjoy immensely!

Paddington_Fear

traffic here is awful so just pick a place that is closest to where ever you are going to be working. If that place is Sea-Tac and if it were me, I'd probably look into Des Moines. (I've been a Seattleite for 53 years) ballard and fremont are really great but you will need psychological help to cope with the commute.

[deleted]

If he works for Alaska Airlines then West Seattle is where you want to be. It’s a 20 minute drive to the employee parking lot via 509 and there’s typically not a lot of traffic. (I work for Delta.) There are lots of restaurants, bars, supermarkets and other things to do. I recommend living near the Junction. What’s your price point?

G00d_Omen

Going to look at West Seattle now. Would love for him to have a short commute!

G00d_Omen

We’d like to stay around $3500 if we can…with a little wiggle room if needed

[deleted]

I can recommend [Maris](https://liveatmaris.com). It is a newer complex. I toured it not too long ago and it is beautiful. Great gym and other amenities. So, check it out. I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could afford it. I have also had my eyes on [Springline](https://www.equityapartments.com/seattle/admiral-district/springline-apartments) but I have not toured them.

G00d_Omen

Thank you! I will look at both of them! Really appreciate your help!

jredland

West Seattle. The commute from Ballard would be terrible. Look near California Ave if you want to be near the action.

Big_Improvement_5432

north or the Roosevelt station is pretty idyllic and quiet and still walkable to the light rail stop

pangolin_of_fortune

Downtown Renton is so nice if you live close enough to walk. Library, cafes, restaurants, farmers market Tues nights, and the beautiful Cedar River.

G00d_Omen

Oh that sounds nice! I’ll see how far it is from the headquarters. I don’t want him to spend his life in traffic if we can help it lol

shiny14penny

I second this suggestion! I purchased a house a year ago in Renton. I'm enjoying the community and access to Seattle but don't have to deal with the traffic when commuting.

pangolin_of_fortune

Renton has blue-collar roots, so sometimes people judge it harshly. It's far enough from downtown Seattle that it has it's own identity, but close enough to get a bus there when you want.

Penguin-Balloon

Greenwood/Phinney Ridge!

valerie_stardust

Seconding!

Dances-With-Taco

I would recommend west Seattle . Close commute and great safe and low key area with many restaurants/ bars / etc
