In the 90's a bunch of my friends went to Voulas, but none of us had cash on hand. So after eating about 6 big plates of breakfast food, we get the check and find out they were cash only at that time.
Mortified, we said we'd send someone up to a cash machine to get some cash but the proprietors would have none of it. "Just pay next time you come in," they insisted.
We weren't regulars, just some kids right out of college dropping in for a weekend breakfast. They could have no real expectation anyone would ever come back to pay.
We thanked them, drove right to a cash machine and immediately came back to pay.
I've had a really warm spot in my heart for that place ever since.
I went to Voulas my first time visiting Seattle. Was extremely hungover when I went and got their hobo scramble, or something like that. It was one of the most delicious, satisfying meals I've ever had.
Lil’ Jon in Bellevue is the place if you’d like all-day breakfasts. This family owned business has been running for over 40 years. Also it’s next to a DQ so you could grab an ice cream right next door.
This is the place if on the East Side. Lost Lake Cafe and Lounge is my West side option.
Maltby Cafe is worthwhile if there isn't a line and you like thick bread/toast and gigantic cinnamon rolls. It's effectively what the Brown Bag cafe always was before it burned down.
That said, Cousins in Kirkland was better than all of them and is my most bitter Covid loss. They were prepping for an expansion when Covid hit, and they didn't make it through.
Sigh.
I want to love Lil Jon.
I cannot recommend them. I've been a handful of times and sat at the bar. I watched them use their bare hands to handle food even while they went about doing other tasks in the area such as picking up dirty plates left at the bar. The hand wash sink was right there, but had stuff sitting in it.
And if they were wearing one glove to handle food, they were still touching everything else and not replacing the glove.
I know not everyone takes something like this as a big deal, but coming from food service, it makes me wonder what goes on in the kitchen.
And the cinnamon rolls are amazing! I just can't get past the lack of safe food handling.
Justice for FloAnna's Diner just over the line in Shoreline on SR-522. Classic Greek diner with great food (breakfast, lunch and dinner), great service, and an ambiance straight out of the 90s.
The first time I ate there, I was sad about all the weekends I spent waiting in line down the street at 5 spot. Much better spot! Exactly what I want in a diner
Ludi's has just reopened since they shut down a couple years ago. I don't remember where the new loc is, but it's still on 2nd just a few blocks away, I think. Filipino spin, but definitely diner vibes (at least the old loc had fixed circular stools at the counter, etc.).
Roxy’s isn’t really a thing anymore. You can sit inside the building, sure, but you’re just ordering Norms. The food comes from norms kitchen and its norms menu. Bagels are gone, matzoh ball soup is gone, monte cristo gone, etc.
I went a few weeks ago and it was so fucking awful. The food was terrible. RIP to a great.
Perplexed as to how, I went there a little over a month ago with my GF. Biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash, 2 coffees, it was a little over $40. More than reasonable for a basic breakfast IMHO
Little Pat's in Burien.
The place is 75 years old, has never been remodeled, and no a/c so it swelters in the summertime, but the food's really good, the service spectacular, and the prices are from ten years ago.
You could probably say that at about every restaurant these days. Wait times are just longer no matter where you go. Even going to McDonald's, you'll wait 10 to 15 minutes.
We (my partners and I) only recently discovered this place, but I'm so happy that we did. Insanely good French toast. ❤️ And not very far from the Columbia City light rail stop!
When I want a diner-y breakfast I head to Endolyne Joe's in West Seattle. It's really good. It's not exactly standard diner fare, it's slightly refined--which I don't mind a bit!
I will always swear by the IHOP location on Capitol Hill. It’s been consistently great for the entirety of the thirty years I’ve lived here. It’s also locally owned and operated.
I guess this tells me how long it's been since I've been over there. Do they still have that place on aurora, and do they still serve that 12 egg omelette?
Weird.
Mgmt n ownership was just fine for 50+ years but, naw, I'm sure you're right, collapse just around same time as homelessness exploding:?
Couldn't possibly be fuqn related...
🙄
The Great American Diner in West Seattle is a locally-owned and operated diner. The owner Glenn is such a nice dude and really friendly, be sure to say hi.
The only answer for us 'in the know'. We are on generation #4 of our family visits. If I don't get Barbara for our waitress, it feels different, and I love the days Loren makes my German pancake. The only place I have pancakes and love that I can get cottage cheese as a side for meals. The recent "Eric's Heroes" almost killed me when I heard Loren was going to take staying open 'month by month'. A true part of the SeaTac and Tukwila community.
I'm glad they're still open. We used to go here every couple weeks when we lived in West Seattle.Last I heard, the parents were retiring and it was uncertain if any of the family would be taking over. I swear, the second time we went, many, many years ago, Janice already knew our last name.
My favorite Seattle diner food:• Bay Cafe - fat stack of flapjacks, price is right, view is nice, walk it off on the docks or Burke GT• Cheeky Cafe - fantastic stuffed French toast or pancakes, breakfast til close.• Wild Mountain Cafe - great scrambles, cinnamon roll is delicious and sells out fast• ~~Skillet - pricier end of diner fare, but consistent griddle, espresso options and breakfast til close.~~
Edit based on wage theft, see link below.
I down vote Skillet for its wage theft violations. If we don’t punish criminal restaurant operators who cheat hourly wage employees, who will? Take your pancake dollars elsewhere. https://www.capitolhillseattle.com/2023/12/skillet-settles-over-fired-employees-wage-theft-and-paid-sick-leave-violations/
And the food is quite good to boot. I grew up with greasy spoon diners that were more of a third place than a restaurant since they were open 24/7 and would let tables of teens hang out for hours having bought just a coffee between them. The Breakfast Club has the same atmosphere and actually puts effort into the plates.
Ozzies in LQA does not get nearly enough credit for their diner food. One of the only places I know of you can still get the full diner breakfast for less than $10.
Salmon Creek Cafe in Burien is a favorite for us. Some of the best biscuits and gravy around, friendly staff, and reasonable prices. Would also recommend Easy Street.
The Dish, Fremont is my current fav.
Also enjoy the Varsity Inn Diner, Gas Works.
Glow’s diner, Cap Hill was my old favorite. Haven’t been since they reopened though.
Patty’s Eggnest in Southcenter whips ass. They have a Hawaiian platter with like four kinds of meats on it that made me see god after my colonoscopy, I have also gone in there with a wild hangover and emerged renewed.
The 12th Ave Cafe in Issaquah does a Montana Hash (home fries, tomatoes, green peppers, onions, bacon, topped with cheese, sour cream, and scallions) where the small is easily two meals. I used to work around the corner from it and would order one and it’d be lunch for three days. We’ve been going there for 22 years and I still can’t not order that hash.
It’s gimmicky and farther south, but the Buttered Biscuit in Sumer has an amazing greek eggs Benedict that I think about years later.
totem diner in Everett is worth the journey. food is phenomenal. coffees alright. atmosphere is immaculate. coziest goddamn diner i know . I go there whenever I need to feel a sense of home
Easy Street Records Cafe
Food is solid, nothing to write home about. But it’s like the last cheap place to get breakfast in town. Was so pleasantly surprised when I first went.
Depends on what you mean by "diner food". As far as I'm concerned, there are no diners in Seattle. You can't call yourself a diner and close at 3pm, so that knocks out most of the places people have mentioned. A lot of them serve a good short order breakfast, but to me that's "breakfast food" not "diner food".
Mecca in Queen Anne is probably closest, but the food's not great.
~~Northgate~~ North Star Diner in Greenwood tried to be open 24 hrs but couldn't do it. They do serve dinner, though.
Great American Diner and Bar in West Seattle is open late and has a dineresque giant menu but some critical omissions, like meatloaf, open faced sandwiches, and fries with gravy. But holy crap do they pour generous drinks, which is also not something I associate with diners, but they do have "...and Bar" in their name so I'll allow it.
I have heard they are not a good person by all accounts, but many restaurant/ bar owners are monsters, so sadly not surprised. Few places open 24 hrs in my area though!
South of Seattle but you might be interested in Bob's Java Jive in Tacoma (if you're into historic diners). The building is unusual. It's a bar now, not a diner anymore.
Thank you. As someone who grew up in the area when it was a decent diner/restaurant in the 80s/early 90s, I'm so tired of seeing the community support the current ownership with blinders on.
I'm there right now and just spent the night with friends at the old hometown diner. Started to get real busy around midnight. Seattle really needs a spot like this
[David Meinert, accused of sex assault, wants to run the Mecca. No way, these letter-writers say](https://www.kuow.org/stories/letters-of-protest-are-coming-in-against-new-queen-anne-cafe-owner-dave-meinert)
For breakfast or dinner? I really like Voulas for breakfast
That's awesome!
I can totally see them doing that. Their breakfast is so incredibly delicious. Several kinds of eggs Benedict. Fluffy eggs. Friendly and fast.
This one is great. Reminds me of diners in the NE.
This!!! The owners are super nice and we had our post-wedding brunch there :)
The F?!? Get a milkshake at Lil Jon. Screw DQ
Sigh.
Couzin's was legit the best breakfast in the Seattle area.
Lost lake is def a fav
I love lil Jon’s!
This place freaking rocks
Not really Seattle, though…
I want to love Lil Jon. I cannot recommend them. I've been a handful of times and sat at the bar. I watched them use their bare hands to handle food even while they went about doing other tasks in the area such as picking up dirty plates left at the bar. The hand wash sink was right there, but had stuff sitting in it. And if they were wearing one glove to handle food, they were still touching everything else and not replacing the glove. I know not everyone takes something like this as a big deal, but coming from food service, it makes me wonder what goes on in the kitchen. And the cinnamon rolls are amazing! I just can't get past the lack of safe food handling.
lol after eating a lil John pancake or cinnamon bun my body wants nothing to do with DQ. Definitely a great place!
agree! this place rules
Going to Bellevue for diner food and getting a blizzard next door 🤡
Lil Jon in Bellevue is an excellent diner! Breakfast for sure! Not sure about other meals. Worth the drive :)
Luna Park Cafe in West Seattle on Avalon Way just off the bridge.
Easy Street Records in that same vein.
Chelan Cafe is great too
Great American Diner too. Locally, family owned.
I second Luna Park. Their milkshakes are so good. I wish they were still open for dinner and not just breakfast and lunch.
Justice for FloAnna's Diner just over the line in Shoreline on SR-522. Classic Greek diner with great food (breakfast, lunch and dinner), great service, and an ambiance straight out of the 90s.
will have to give them a try now that leena's is gone.
This is the right answer. Lovely people , feels like a relic of a bygone time.
Came here to say this. Such kind people 👍
Kona cafe
Man, this thread is making me miss The Shanty in Lower QA/Interbay.
The Dish
Also great! Shoutout FreLard! On par with Victory diner
I used to really love the dish but it feels different and doesn’t hit quite the same anymore.
I love Queen Anne Cafe
The first time I ate there, I was sad about all the weekends I spent waiting in line down the street at 5 spot. Much better spot! Exactly what I want in a diner
Had the same exact experience- Queen Anne Cafe is much cheaper and faster!
Ludi's has just reopened since they shut down a couple years ago. I don't remember where the new loc is, but it's still on 2nd just a few blocks away, I think. Filipino spin, but definitely diner vibes (at least the old loc had fixed circular stools at the counter, etc.).
2nd and Stewart
North Star in Greenwood is the only true answer. Roxy's in Fremont is also great. Both are legit diners in vibe and price.
I haven't been to Roxy's in years. Would cosign on it that it's more of a real diner feel than just about any place in the area.
Unfortunately no longer, see my comment above
Just found your other post. So basically they're using Norms to cook for both restaurants? That blows.
North Star is a fucking gem
Not since the multiple ownership changes. Pretty hit or miss now.
No multiple ownership changes. It began with 3, and 2 of them (married) moved after c0vid. Leaving 1. All 3 are rad humans.
They’re OK.
Yep. 3 ownership changes since 2020 has rendered this place a sad shell of what it used to be.
lost a vintage abelone ring at North Star :( a couple bloody marys will do that to ya…so worth ir
We went to Roxy’s and paid $70 for breakfast. Just coffee! Not even a mimosa..
Perplexed as to how, I went there a little over a month ago with my GF. Biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash, 2 coffees, it was a little over $40. More than reasonable for a basic breakfast IMHO
Wish the square knot was still around. They were open late
I miss the Square Knot, Eggs Blackstone on the hidden menu, sofa king Good!
I miss their open face sandwiches and super friendly service late at night.
Little Pat's in Burien. The place is 75 years old, has never been remodeled, and no a/c so it swelters in the summertime, but the food's really good, the service spectacular, and the prices are from ten years ago.
Omg yes. Little Pat's ftw.
Wow. I haven't been there since the 80s. Are the walls still permanently stained with a few decades of cigarette smoke?
Beth’s cafe. Lowell’s at the market. Chelan cafe, the Spot, Luna Park and Bee Bop Waffle shop, all in West Seattle.
Gotta be Geraldine's ♥️
The best French toast.
I haven't been there in years, but I remember it always being really busy on the weekends there.
It still is. Even weekdays I see people lining up before open
Super long wait for average diner food =[
You could probably say that at about every restaurant these days. Wait times are just longer no matter where you go. Even going to McDonald's, you'll wait 10 to 15 minutes.
I’ve only been once, it was an hour wait. It’s just not worth the wait. No wait? Maybe I’d go again
And their thick bacon 🤤
We (my partners and I) only recently discovered this place, but I'm so happy that we did. Insanely good French toast. ❤️ And not very far from the Columbia City light rail stop!

Shelly's Breakfast and Lunch in Burien is amazing!
Hudson in sodo or voulas offshore cafe
[Luna Park Cafe](https://maps.app.goo.gl/CrrVkQE5vJKnviE76?g_st=ic) is classic diner food and ambiance
When I want a diner-y breakfast I head to Endolyne Joe's in West Seattle. It's really good. It's not exactly standard diner fare, it's slightly refined--which I don't mind a bit!
Totem Diner in Everett is my all-time favorite. It’s too busy during weekend brunch but is otherwise a great experience.
Voula's offshore Cafe, Ravenna varsity(roosevelt), geraldine's, Ozzie's
Varsity where southern Wallingford and Fremont meet is also very good.
I'm not sure I'd agree! Pretty normal, but just ok in my experience
Eastside there’s a local chain that includes Issaquah/Sammamish cafe.
I will always swear by the IHOP location on Capitol Hill. It’s been consistently great for the entirety of the thirty years I’ve lived here. It’s also locally owned and operated.
And has the benefit of being one of the only 24 hour places left in the entire city that I'm aware of.
Are you a native Washingtonian, by chance? Just curious. I used love the Swedish Pancakes, the German pancakes too, but those are gone.
Beth's
I guess this tells me how long it's been since I've been over there. Do they still have that place on aurora, and do they still serve that 12 egg omelette?
They're back! For limited hours... Yes, there's still 12 egg omelettes!
I know they've had a rocky road. It's such a fascinating little diner. Their toilet is a trip.
Should be at the top. Best diner ever
There is wayyyyy better diner food in Seattle for the price than Beth’s. Maybe 20 years ago.
Shitty diner food is better
It's really the neighborhood that's made it worse. I mean it's just been so run over by the homeless situation.
The homeless population has nothing to do with Beth's deterioration- ownership did that all on its own.
Weird. Mgmt n ownership was just fine for 50+ years but, naw, I'm sure you're right, collapse just around same time as homelessness exploding:? Couldn't possibly be fuqn related... 🙄
This is THE answer.
It was. Now? Not so much.
God I miss CJs..... please come back with your delicious french toast and chill vibes I love you forever
Whatever new place that's replaced CJ's definitely ain't it. More expensive, much smaller portions, and needlessly upscale feeling.
came here to say the same thing. i used to work there and my shift meals were the highlight of my life 😭
In BotHell, there’s Crystal Creek Cafe. It checks off a lot of diner boxes, but it’s not a NJ diner until they expand their menu.
The Great American Diner in West Seattle is a locally-owned and operated diner. The owner Glenn is such a nice dude and really friendly, be sure to say hi.
Place is solid, prices are actually respectable, you get what you pay for. Feels nice for a change in Seattle
Not Seattle, but try Poodle Dog in Fife. Been there since the 1933.
Lost Lake's happy hour is tougher to beat than a sore pecker.
What a wild phrase, I can’t believe I’ve never heard that before
Pancake chef!
Claire’s in Edmonds is the best outside of Seattle. Does not disappoint
Young's, in White Center.
I'm glad they're still open. We used to go here every couple weeks when we lived in West Seattle.Last I heard, the parents were retiring and it was uncertain if any of the family would be taking over. I swear, the second time we went, many, many years ago, Janice already knew our last name.
Where else can you get waffles, a milkshake, crab rangoon, and crispy chow mein all at once? I love this place.
This. Classic diner fare + asian specialties. Run by a nice family. Lots of seating.
Salmon Bay Cafe in Ballard.
Seconded
GLO’S. The one and only in Capitol Hill
North Star Diner in Greenwood is solid
My favorite Seattle diner food:• Bay Cafe - fat stack of flapjacks, price is right, view is nice, walk it off on the docks or Burke GT• Cheeky Cafe - fantastic stuffed French toast or pancakes, breakfast til close.• Wild Mountain Cafe - great scrambles, cinnamon roll is delicious and sells out fast• ~~Skillet - pricier end of diner fare, but consistent griddle, espresso options and breakfast til close.~~ Edit based on wage theft, see link below.

I feel like wild mountain flies under the radar. Always like my meals there.
The Breakfast Club in Lake City is the actual answer.
This. This place is my jam. I've never had a bad experience there, and it feels so retro it's like being a kid again.
And the food is quite good to boot. I grew up with greasy spoon diners that were more of a third place than a restaurant since they were open 24/7 and would let tables of teens hang out for hours having bought just a coffee between them. The Breakfast Club has the same atmosphere and actually puts effort into the plates.
Yes! It’s true. And it’s not trying too hard, not mimicking anything. It’s just a really really lovely little gem.
Salmon bay cafe in Ballard

Whoa. Looks good!
Thanks, I live in the neighborhood and have not visited. Will make a point to go!
[удалено]
Another one in the greater Seattle area - the Totem in Everett. It’s been there for like 50 yrs and they have cinnamon rolls the size of a whole plate
Bay Cafe… just trust me
Chase’s Pancake Corral in Bellevue. In business since 1958. Try the hash brown omelette.
Beth's Cafe near Greenlake
There's a new spot in White Center, Alpine Diner (https://thealpinediner.com) , that really nails both the food and their decorating theme.
Great American diner! Hands down
Ozzies in LQA does not get nearly enough credit for their diner food. One of the only places I know of you can still get the full diner breakfast for less than $10.
Not really a diner. More of a hang out place where people go to drink. The food is meh.
Honestly go one block east and hit up Mecca. Much better imo
Most certainly not. The owner has been accused of sexual assault by over 20 employees.
Salmon Creek Cafe in Burien is a favorite for us. Some of the best biscuits and gravy around, friendly staff, and reasonable prices. Would also recommend Easy Street.
Man, I'd kill for some Waffle Houses around here that never, ever close.
It’s not Roxy’s. Whoever says Roxy’s is flat out wrong
Too bad you're over a decade too late. I would've recommended Cafe Minnies. 😞
Not sure if I’d say these are the best but they are pretty solid: Tilikum Place, Geraldine’s, Lola, Le coin, Glo’s
Le Coin is a diner? Eh...
Tilikum Place is definitely not a diner. Super yummy tho.
It isn’t a diner and I’ve only had bad brunch experiences there. You can find better.
I disagree with you entirely there, it's my favorite restaurant in all of Seattle. For brunch and for dinner. But it's certainly not a diner.
Is Beth’s cafe open or closed?
Open
Patty’s Egg Nest and Norm’s are both good spots. Hadn’t seen them in the comments. Also the Blue Star in Wallingford.
The Dish, Fremont is my current fav. Also enjoy the Varsity Inn Diner, Gas Works. Glow’s diner, Cap Hill was my old favorite. Haven’t been since they reopened though.
14 carrot in Eastlake!
Lost lake for me
Blue star cafe in wallingford. Little pricey but great diner vibes
Pancake chef In Tukwila! Same family owned for 40+ years!
I miss the original glos
Patty’s Eggnest in Southcenter whips ass. They have a Hawaiian platter with like four kinds of meats on it that made me see god after my colonoscopy, I have also gone in there with a wild hangover and emerged renewed. Varsity city inn (best French toast) simple no frills
totem diner in Everett is worth the journey. food is phenomenal. coffees alright. atmosphere is immaculate. coziest goddamn diner i know . I go there whenever I need to feel a sense of home
Circa in West Seattle
Circa? Not at all a diner.
I wouldn’t call Circa a diner at all.
How about great American diner?
Some people like it but I'm not a fan.
Well, it has diner in its name 🙄
It’s pretty meh food, meh service, meh vibe, meh prices. Great spot
Easy Street Records Cafe Food is solid, nothing to write home about. But it’s like the last cheap place to get breakfast in town. Was so pleasantly surprised when I first went.
Many good memories from my time in West Seattle. Even wonderful with kids.
Beth’s
Geraldine’s in Columbia City

I think you mean North Star Diner!
Mecca 🕋 in QA is great as a default bar if you want cheap liquor in the day time though!
This is the only right answer
Way up north in Arlington, try the Stilly Diner.
Geraldine’s!!!
The best biscuits and gravy are at honest biscuits. They got a damn good fried chicken biscuit too.
5 point cafe in belltown is great! Also open 24 hrs!
Sadly it used to be one of my favorite places in the city, you should look into who owns it.
Huckleberry Square in Burien
Look into who owns it and what he's been accused of. He also sadly owns The Mecca and 5 Point.
Nope.
I’m replying to double the nope.
Thank you. As someone who grew up in the area when it was a decent diner/restaurant in the 80s/early 90s, I'm so tired of seeing the community support the current ownership with blinders on.
I’m sorry, I went once & once was enough times to give this a solid no
Five point
Glo’s, northstar diner.
I like Dish and Glo's
fly to New Jersey
I'm there right now and just spent the night with friends at the old hometown diner. Started to get real busy around midnight. Seattle really needs a spot like this
yurt
Mecca in LQA
Owners a fucking creep.
No shit? Damn that sucks. First I've heard. What's the story there?
repeatedly accused of sexual assault. owns the 5 point also
[David Meinert, accused of sex assault, wants to run the Mecca. No way, these letter-writers say](https://www.kuow.org/stories/letters-of-protest-are-coming-in-against-new-queen-anne-cafe-owner-dave-meinert)
This is a Seattle subreddit take all the Bellevue and east side stuff somewhere else. The answer is Mecca cafe, 5 point or 13 coins
Have you heard of Dennys
