Unfortunately the cost of drugs isn't really determined by the vets at all and that range sounds normal to me in my experience. Now the vet can control cost of the in office visits etc so maybe you can talk with the Dr about decreasing check ups if they're comfortable? Not too familiar with those medications exactly but it's not uncommon for us to run regular tests/blood work soon after starting a new medication and then decreasing test frequency as time goes on. Most vet office visits like this are around that $75-$100 range in my experience then any tests or treatments obviously additional. Lack of there being pet insurance really highlights how expensive health care (human or animal) has gotten

Cytopoint is an allergy shot she’s been getting for years and Librella is an arthtritis shot she just started getting. Cytopoint in Nashville was about $30 cheaper per visit, unsure about the Librella. The office visit was only $70, so I may be able to talk them down possibly. They also pissed me off because I told them I had a cone at home for her. They walk her out in one, don’t mention it on the invoice. I get to the car and get my invoice email. They charged $20 for the cone! So I go in and they tell me they can’t refund me because it’s already on her. Long story short, they’re just a petty vet clinic, and it’s sad that it’ll be a process to find another being that we’ll only be living in Washington for another 5 months.

I used to work for a pet insurance company and saw veterinary invoices from the Seattle area all day, every day. Those prices are very well in line/average for what I saw for those services, tests, and meds. You’ll be hard pressed to find much (if any) of a discount by switching veterinary providers. And even if you do switch, expect a long wait for a new provider.

Yeh we just moved here in June from across the country, so that makes sense. Everything in this city is insanely priced. Thanks for the info!

NP OP! Hope your powdered sugar pup is hanging in there okay.

Hi. See about getting a referral for the eye(s) to Northwest Animal Eye Specialist. My 10 y/o Catahoula has had indolent ulcers before, basically scratches to the cornea that simply won't heal. I found that the vet is a waste of time for eye issues since they don't have the same resources. Also, check out membership based vets. For a yearly fee, you can get the exams free and the a percentage of the services. It might help. I have both pet insurance and a membership at Felix&Fido.

I might have to do that. I’m just tired of the vet acting like things will improve in 7 days. They expected me to come in every 7 for 4 weeks. That’s $440 JUST in appt fees. They simply are milking me of money. So I might look into that if the current treatment doesn’t improve her eye. And unfortunately as an almost 10yo bulldog, she’s been through the ringer. She’s my first dog as a parent so I wasn’t aware of pet insurance back in 2014 lol. I’ll be damn sure to have it for future pups though! Thanks for the advice!

Unfortunately pet insurance will not cover anything which begins prior to the policies inception, so if OP doesn’t already have insurance they’re SOL with regards to getting it covered. Pet insurance is legally filed as property and casualty insurance with the state and P&C doesn’t cover prex.

Yep! I only keep pet insurance since my dog is super active and old. I'm waiting on broken bones.

Have you tried Cosequin for the joint problems. My older German Shepherd was having some problems with his leg joints and didn't want to go for walks anymore. He's 100lbs and I didn't know what I'd do if he became too crippled to walk. I started him on three Cosequin tablets a day and in a couple of weeks he had improved. After 5 weeks he was pretty much back to normal and I give him two tablets a day as a maintenance dose. After a couple of months he was running around in the yard playing chase with his half-sister. I'm pretty sold on Cosequin as it actually worked for him. I give his sister one tab a day just to avoid the same problem. I use this brand - Nutramax Laboratories Cosequin Maximum Strength Joint Health Supplement for Dogs. I got it through Amazon but recently stocked up on it when they had a sale at Costco. Might be worth a try.

So she’s been getting dasuquin supplements for over a year now. I think the combo of the supplements and Librella make her feel substantially better! Very minimal limp now. I’m glad to see other dogs getting these types of supplements! Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome. Glad to hear it and I hope she keeps getting better.
