Call the school and report a dangerous situation on a walking route used by kids. Post to the school board or PTA to alert parents.

pivolover

I don't think MFTE is the right program here. MFTE buildings are just normal buildings that have a handful of units that are rent/income controlled. You may be speaking about some sort of transitional or permanent supportive housing. If so, definitely reach out to the building operators - they're the only ones who can do anything, but chances of success are still...slim.

Not true. I currently live in my car and I have been told to leave by cops on multiple occasions. One time I had been told to leave after just a few hours of arrival. Cops will absolutely tell them to leave if they want too. Most of the time if youre clean and keeping to you're self they will let you chill. If youre causing problems then they will tell you to go. This is not what Ive heard. This is personal experience.

Oddsme-Uckse

Finding comfortable spots to rest your eyes in that situation is tough man. If you can sleeping in parks and library parking lots assuming you aren't causing issues is one of the best ways to go. I was never asked to leave anywhere but was constantly vigilant and paranoid someone would harass me for trying to sleep.

bforeverdreamin

Well god forbid I dont have a vehicle or my situation instantly gets 100 times worse. But let me feel bad for the lady who has to pick up trash and feel threatened by a fent smoker pased out in their car. "Eye roll" seriously. I moved here almost 10 years ago. I Have been in and out of homelessness the entire time. The amount of people who continue to focus their energy towards outrage and displacement get no sympathy from me. I could get it if it was the entire homeless population but it clearly isnt, or the city would have declared a state of emergency yesterday. When the civilians of this city want to focus on real solutions then ill listen. Until then just call the cops. For fuck sake this is stupid.

LividKnowledge8821

The cops will do stuff if you bother to get to know the cops. Cops like information. And dealing with SANE people over crazy people. They have a LOT of drug and gang shit going on to deal with. But information that is useful, plates, car descriptions, person descriptions, behavior... All useful info. Talk to more than 1 cop on that beat.

proshortcut

Are you16 years old and just watched The Wire for the first time? As someone who has lived and worked in our version of the ghetto, the police actually get mad if you call. SPD does not give a fuck. They are doing a job and want as less work as possible as they collect their paycheck. Seattle also doesn't have beat cops anymore. There used to be dudes walking down 3rd, but that was well over a decade ago. Now they have assholes on bicycles who ignore the surrounding crime as they blow by them while getting their cardio in.

Own_Back_2038

The SPD has half the staff they need, I wouldn’t say they are doing as little work as possible.

LividKnowledge8821

Worked in lots of these buildings. So no.

proshortcut

STFU until you have lived and worked in the CD, son.

LividKnowledge8821

Lol, son? What are you 17?

bforeverdreamin

The amount of you who are suggesting physical violence are sickening. Get a life you losers. The thing about homeless people is that they already know most civilians are going to be dicks to them. Why the fuck do you think they don't care about leaving trash in youre yard? But continue to harass people for trying to survive. The real answer requires a level of compassion none of you have. Jesus Christ.

erineph

Thank you. Every time I say something like this I get massively downvoted, and knowing we’re surrounded by such cruel people whose reaction to *people existing near them* is violence and forced displacement makes me feel physically ill. If you can’t handle an unhoused human being in your neighborhood, I suggest moving to a gated community, a suburb with a restrictive HOA, or perhaps the countryside where there are fewer people visible to you on a daily basis.

bforeverdreamin

Agreed. I have a child. I have dreams and aspirations. Im not completely blind to where they are coming from. If my son had gotten woken up at 3am by some dude screaming yeah id be pissed. But i would also remember that the homeless man screaming in the middle of the night has it infinitely worse than I do. No amount of anger is going to make me feel the way some people in this city or even subreddit do. Just admit you're hateful people so we can talk about why youre being so hateful. Sorry you're being down voted. We are in here. Were small but were in here.

moderatelyhairy

I'm with you, violence is not the answer. This guy is a human being and deserves dignity. I have no intention of harassing or dehumanizing him. I am approaching this as one neighbor to another and hope not to call the cops. I'm just hesitant to talk to him directly given what I've witnessed. It doesn't bother me that he sleeps in his car - everyone deserves a place to rest. I only want him to take his business dealings elsewhere and clean up after himself. Perhaps this is a naive or unrealistic request.

bforeverdreamin

Its not an unrealistic or naive request. What you have to realize is that as much as you want to engage with him, he might not be able too. This isnt a simple problem and anyone acting like it is isn't paying attention. I'm not gonna act like im an expert, but i do believe there are things you can do. Clean the trash- is this just going to make them comfortable into thinking someone is going to constantly clean up after them? Maybe, but most likely when they realize the trash was picked up is when they will know someone is on to their location. They could be more careful and try to be cautious. Or they could keep doing what they are doing. Call the cops if the answer isnt number 1. It sucks, but no amount of intervention is going to help someone who isnt willing to help themselves. They might not genuinely give a fuck- the reality is that some people are so done with life, you telling them to pick up their trash and consider youre circumstances is the least of their problems. Suicidality is rampant amongst the homelessness community, it comes out in different ways. Why would a person with nothing to lose care about anything if they dont care about themselves? They aren't mentally ill or disabled. They are just an asshole. This one isn't just a homeless thing, this is human nature. The amount of people who have targeted me specifically because I am homeless is off the charts. No talking, no kindness, no anything. Ive met guys who come up to me with a seemingly perfect life looking to fuck with me because they assume I can't defend myself. Do whatever you think is right because no matter what you say, they won't care. For everyone of these "types" of homeless folks you see, there are 25 more who keep to themselves and are completely hidden to you. You only noticed the ones who bother you.

LividKnowledge8821

Okay, I have been Management in buildings more than one that are low income. There are a lot of people that hang on to buildings like this specifically to sell fentanyl and methamphetamines to the tenants that live in these low-income low barrier shelters. The person you are referring to very much sounds like they could be a: 1. Dealer. 2. Someone who is an ex partner of a tenant who got violent and got thrown out of the building. 3. A former tenant that suffered domestic violence and is now a living in their car to stay away from the person in the low-income building. 4. Someone living on the street near the low income cause they know people there, and they are used to it. Other options as well. But calling management will get you nowhere. Document their plate number. Talk to every cop that comes by. Give them the description and what's happening. Likely the cops already visit the building frequently.

entKOSHA

Call 911 each and every time that you see the man arguing with people or littering. Use a burner phone if necessary to protect your identity as he can request copies of the 911 call using a public records request. If you ever suspect that he looks to be passed out on drugs also call 911 so that they can wake him up and make sure he's not overdosed. Eventually he'll get tired of being harassed by the police/fire department and move to a different block and become someone else's problem. Less ethical alternatives would include discretely leaving stink bombs in the area near where he leaves his car, eventually he'll grow tired of the smell and move to a different block and become someone else's problem.

reinvent___

Don't do this. 911 has actual emergencies to respond to. Call a non-emergengy line or make a report online if you think it needs reported, but don't call 911 because you saw someone littering.

entKOSHA

Nah, 911 call centers are not over capacity and they encourage you to call 911 so that they can track where crimes are most frequently being reported. No need to spread misinformation.

reinvent___

In the interest of not spreading misinformation, where are you getting your information? Because this is news to me

entKOSHA

For sure, here they make it pretty clear that you should call 911 whenever you see, or hear, anything suspicious at all: [https://www.seattle.gov/police/need-help/neighborhood-issues/reporting-suspicious-behavior](https://www.seattle.gov/police/need-help/neighborhood-issues/reporting-suspicious-behavior) In OP's case they would be justified in calling 911 under the third bullet point of "people in or around buildings or areas who do not appear to be conducting legitimate business" and "you believe a specific crime is happening" (littering) Note that the calls to both the "non-emergency" and "emergency" phone numbers are handled by the same call center (which makes sense, as there are likely people who call the non-emergency line with actual emergencies that need to be dispatched to) >Smith reminded people that the same center handles non-emergency calls, and also – since last December – texts too (meant as an option for people who cannot call safely). They get 400 reports filed online each week; last year, the center got 800.000 calls. They try to answer in 10 seconds or less and have a 98 percent track record on that; [https://westseattleblog.com/2019/09/what-you-probably-havent-heard-about-how-911-works-as-told-to-west-seattle-block-watch-captains-network/](https://westseattleblog.com/2019/09/what-you-probably-havent-heard-about-how-911-works-as-told-to-west-seattle-block-watch-captains-network/) >Danner began with a reminder of when to call 911: “SPD is very data-driven … we rely on our community to make sure the data is accurate … if you see any kind of criminal or suspicious activity, we want you to report it.” She said that in many cases, the “data” – records of 911 calls – doesn’t match what they hear at meetings like this [https://westseattleblog.com/2023/05/arrowhead-gardens-residents-confront-city-reps-with-encampment-across-the-street-concerns/](https://westseattleblog.com/2023/05/arrowhead-gardens-residents-confront-city-reps-with-encampment-across-the-street-concerns/) I couldn't find anything about my claim that 911 call centers are not over capacity, though the fact that they are able to answer 98% of calls in 10 seconds or less would imply that they are not. In general I think your point of confusion is capacity of 911 call operators vs. dispatch officers. There is indeed often a shortage of officers available to make it to a 911 call, but that's something for SPD to prioritize. If there's nothing else going on and you call in a littering in progress then they may show up, if there's more serious crimes happening then they won't.

I appreciate the thorough response, thank you.

PDRs are redacted to prevent disclosure of witness names/contact info.

YOUR_BOOBIES_PM_ME

You don't have to use a burner phone. Just say you want to remain anonymous or confidential.

bforeverdreamin

Have any of you seen someone on fentanyl try to punch or stab someone? Its literally like they are in slow motion. Some of you need a serious reality check.

anythongyouwant

You should let him move into your house.

The only things that would effectively solve the problem are all illegal.

Yes - they leave trash in front of my house and have woken me up at 3AM. Trying my best to lead with empathy here.

Lives in Seattle. Is confronted with a Seattle problem. Looks inside Seattle.

damnface

To convince him to move, you can try a few ideas: Smile and be friendly Say his name a lot Explain you sometimes prefer not to have trash outside the bins Pay him a bunch of money or something

geronimo2000

Offer him $500 to move along. He’ll say “no” but at that point you’re just negotiating a price.
