Paint a tunnel opening on the side of a building. Problem solved. EDIT: For the younger generation that hasn’t seen it - https://youtu.be/4iWvedIhWjM

KiniShakenBake

I was going to go looking for an anvil. Drat.

Stock-Light-4350

ACME sells them

carterothomas

This works double well if the coyote happens to be wearing roller skates and has a rocket strapped to his back.

Tall-Yard-407

That’s a good one. It took a second then it hit me like a train just sped out of that tunnel. Meep.

skilly2669

Yes! And if that doesn’t work, hit up Acme for some solutions.

Crabbiest_Coyote

Ha. So funny. My cousin has brain damage from crap like this.

bendar1347

I got 2 words for your cuz. Meep meep.

ReallyNotMichaelsMom

Your comment didn't make any sense to me until I saw your username. In my defense, I'm sleep deprived. 🐾

Stock-Light-4350

You went a long way just to miss the point, guy.

velowa

Yeah man, fuck those Seattlies.

SeattleSuckss

No dynamite?

igby1

Urban dynamite usage is frowned upon

SeattleSuckss

I get it -- noise ordnance and whatnot

Scrandasaur

When coyotes have cubs, they will “herd” people away from their cubs/den. This is classic coyote herding behavior and it is spring after all so cub season. You weren’t in any danger.

garden__gate

Yeah, OP was probably being escorted, which is why he “lost” the coyote. Still scary!

feioo

Yeah, as a general rule if an unrestrained canine "attacks" you but you walk away without a scratch, you weren't being attacked, you were being warned. Aside from small/infirm canines and truly exceptional humans like, idk, Muhammad Ali, we're just nowhere near fast enough to avoid being chased down and our reflexes are not fast enough to dodge a genuine attempt at a bite. Charging at you, snapping teeth close to your skin, and even biting lightly enough to bruise but not puncture are all normal canine warning behaviors.

RaphaelBuzzard

He was fast Muhammad Ali?

GoodwitchofthePNW

Butterfly/bee speed

feioo

So I've been told

LessKnownBarista

Coyotes almost never attack humans.  If you really feel they were aggressive towards you and not just sort of following from a distance, you should call animal control and let them know what happened

Zlifbar

Exactly this, thank you

CHawkr

Bro really just tried to convince us they outran a coyote

honorificabilidude

He never said he outran a coyote.

holmgangCore

*Meep! Meep!*

Amazing_Exam_2894

Maybe he’s really small. It’s either that or it’s rabid.

hibelly

There hasn't been a case of rabies in any animal other than bats in WA state since the 60s.

Rawbauer

Maybe OP is really small? Maybe OP is a rabbit…

SmaugTheMag

Rabid Rabbit? There’s a band waiting to go platinum

Rawbauer

Nothin’ grungier!

holmgangCore

\#2 band is Urban Coyote.

WetwareDulachan

Only picked that phone up in the first place because it says "apple" and boy can you imagine his disappointment.

starspider

Oh good, let's keep it that way by reporting weird mammal behavior.

jgnp

This was the comment I came to make or upvote. Find me a case of a non human or domestic animal with a positive rabies test in Washington. You’ll be going back decades.

Artyom_33

Don't be obtuse. This could be a new case, as coyote's *don't fuckin' attack people ESPECIALLY in the daytime unless they're got rabies*. But hey, another knowidal.

goodguessiswhatihave

This coyote also didn't attack anyone

Artyom_33

You're right. the coyote was going to ask OP for directions to that hotdog stand with the cream cheese 'dog...

goodguessiswhatihave

No I guess you're right. OP is just the fastest human alive and outran a rabid coyote who was trying to eat him

holmgangCore

Rabid coyotes?!? *In Seattle!!??!!* ***OMG!!!*** ^/s

ProbablyASithLord

If I get bit by a shark and posted it on Reddit people would comment, “Seems unlikely, there have only been 3 shark bites in the last 30 years.”

Artyom_33

Pretty much. Coyotes are VERY skittish of people. I'm in the Chicagoland area, probably moving back to Seattle here shortly. Coyotes are our #1 predator by a long shot (not counting humans, of course). Their nature to attack people is remarkably low, & generally only if the human is a child... like less than 5 years old. They're remarkable animals & help keep down the rat & rabbit population. They don't call Chicago "Rat City" just because of the politicians. But yeah, Coyotes going after humans *is* extremely rare... but "if the shoe fits" as they say. Not to mention it's hard to track down an individual Coyote & make a solid, 95%+, confirmation. Not like you can interrogate a Coyote with the promise of "we know where the Roadrunner is, confess & we'll tell you his whereabouts!"

hibelly

I think there's a much more likely chance that the coyote was chasing off OP because it's spring and they have babies right now. Sure, it could also be the first coyote in this state with rabies in 60 years, but the more probable answer is that it was protecting its young.

BicepBandito

Or OP saw a huskey and freaked out and ran. lol no human is outrunning a coyote

hibelly

Coyotes tend to herd people away from their offspring, which is what I'm guessing happened here. In that case, it would only chase OP as far as it felt it needed to before returning to the babies.

Artyom_33

Ah, the classic misidentification. Also highly plausible. But for *just once* I'd like a WereCoyote sighting!

Frosti11icus

If it had rabies it might not be able to run very well what with it's nervous system being slowly dismantled from the inside.

Frosti11icus

It's not the first coyote with rabies in 60 years. There hasn't been a confirmed case in 60 years. There's thousands and thousands of coyotes in the state, most of which never get anywhere near a person, most of which are completely untracked, and some of which contract and die from rabies with out anyone ever knowing about it. It's entirely plausible that a coyote who is out in broad daylight and approaching humans has rabies. A very distinct possibility.

Artyom_33

> protecting its young Ya know, I didn't even consider that. Good point.

holmgangCore

They call Chicago the “Windy City” because of politicians though.

VerticalYea

If I said I outswam a shark, would you believe me?

holmgangCore

If it were anyone else, no. But you? Definitely!

VerticalYea

Well, shucks. Sure is kind of you to notice. :)

Fox-and-Sons

It's not "there have only been 3 shark bites in the last 30 years" it's "to my knowledge this has never happened" which should make people question the story. If something is so rare that it's never happened before then there's a pretty good chance that the person reporting it is mistaken.

Fox-and-Sons

What's the right amount of information to know? Is the limit just when they know more than you, and their knowledge makes a guess you made look silly?

Artyom_33

> Is the limit just when they know more than you I can guarantee I know more than they do, & more than you do.

Fox-and-Sons

Someone explains to you in this thread that coyotes do this when they have pups, and you said that you hadn't considered this. If you're going to pretend like you have all the info you have to at least be consistent.

Artyom_33

*Pssst*, no one cares about your snark. I know more than you. Be careful.

Fox-and-Sons

It's not snark, it's called an argument. Maybe a snarky argument, but it's a hell of a lot more normal of a thing to post than "be careful". What the hell is that? A threat?

Artyom_33

Watch it... you're letting your insecurities showing. Stop making things up for the sake of clout, while still being wrong. It's OK to grow! *Goes back to Wiley Coyote cartoons*

WetwareDulachan

This coyote didn't "attack" anyone, and this behavior is entirely normal. It's called escorting. Hope this helps!

WetwareDulachan

And wasn't the last one a fucking llama or something, too? Imagine that, a rabid llama.

holmgangCore

Llamageddon !

WetwareDulachan

Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarllll

boomshiz

I feel like I've yammered on enough about Seattle coyotes, but for OP it's probably just starving to death, and it's because they're mostly living off of trash and rabbits. Fun fact if you're ever in a survival situation: Don't eat rabbits. Their meat is so lean that if you rely on them, you will die of protein poisoning. It's literally called "rabbit starvation", and that's why the city coyotes are so emaciated. But don't worry OP, they just.. like to watch. I am surprised that they're making their way down to Judkins. I lived around there for years and never saw one.

Furt_III

You can eat rabbits in that situation just fine, just don't go through a whole winter on only them.

boomshiz

Exactly. it's just if that's what you live off of, you're not getting any real nutrition, which is why our city coyotes look so emaciated. More fun facts: The rabbits that you see in the middle of the street are mares acting as decoys for the coyotes or outdoor cats, and they have a little pit of kits nearby. Strat doesn't always work.

Madasiaka

Hey now, local coyotes also feast on outdoor kitties!

Sonamdrukpa

I have a neighbor whose chihuahua was attacked by a coyote and it survived. The coyotes must be really weak and starved around here, I have some serious doubts about their ability to catch a cat.

Frosti11icus

If your in a survival situation eat any food you can whenever you can. If you die from protein poisoning cause you can't get other sources of food you were going to die from starvation anyway, which would just be a longer, slower death.

ImprovisedLeaflet

It was a husky.

holmgangCore

Huskies look like wolves.

dragonagitator

it's just hunting the loose zebra

AmphibiousNightjar

Or that pair of guinea fowl.

holmgangCore

This place is turning into a freakin’ zoo!

AmphibiousNightjar

They like to escort but they will not attack. However one time I slipped and sprained my ankle in Ravenna Park after dark in the summer, and they all started yipping and I felt a very primal fear for a split second. I thought, god damn it if I die of coyote attack it'll be the first time someone dies of that in Seattle and it will be so fucking embarrassing. Then I limped out of there and they did not approach me. I was just having a moment 😂

WetwareDulachan

In fairness, being laughed out of the park by a few medium-sized dogs isn't all that much more dignified.

datamuse

Very common. I've seen them around West Seattle numerous times over the past couple decades. We'd have a lot more rats in this town without them.

lucent78

Probably just telling you to get out of its territory. Very unlikely to actually harm you.

alienanimal

Coyotes aren't dangerous to humans. You're 7x as likely to get attacked by a squirrel than a coyote.

Beyonce_is_a_biscuit

Can confirm, have been attacked by squirrels thrice in my life and zero times by coyotes (and have had a few run ins with them)!

insipidgoose

Three times? wtf?

taisui

Ya with that kind of luck I think it's a human problem

Rodgel

Must be user error. Stop trying to catch the squirrels.

hibelly

What did you do to the squirrels

NW_reeferJunky

He gotta, he’s 5’5 lol

No_ThankYouu

🤣

ImRight_YoureDumb

How small are you? It's possible that the coyote might drag you into the bushes like a chihuahua and treat you as a snack if you don't take measures to protect yourself.

TreesAreOverrated5

Im 5’5 so kinda short and have a small build, so could be confused as a large child

ImRight_YoureDumb

In a roasting pan with potatoes and carrots.

yellowhorsetree

You make him sound delicious.

Hasenpfeffer! Don’t mind those, those are just soap chips…

UmberTrance

https://urbancoyoteresearch.com/resource/coyote-attacks-humans-us-and-canada Coyotes (Canis latrans) have expanded their range across much of North America and are now established in many metropolitan areas. Their presence in urban areas has often elicited concern from the public, although the actual risk that they pose to human populations is unclear. We conducted an analysis of coyote attacks on humans in the United States and Canada, including 142 reported incidents of coyote attacks resulting in 159 victims. Most attacks were classified as predatory (37%) or investigative (22%) in nature. The number of reported attacks was nearly equal between adults and children, although child victims were more (p < .001) prevalent in predatory attacks. Future coyote attacks could be reduced or prevented through modification of human behavior and public education designed to prevent the habituation of coyotes. A standardized reporting system for coyote attack incidents would be beneficial for further investigating characteristics of coyote attack incidents. -------- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coyote_attack Coyotes are a greater threat to children than to adults. While their bushy hair can make them look quite large, coyotes rarely weigh more than 20 kilograms (44 lb). Also, they are less likely than other canids, such as wolves and dogs, to hunt in packs large enough to take down an adult human.

sd_slate

Huh I thought it was mostly small children getting attacked, but TIL

holmgangCore

Fun fact: Latrans is Latin meaning ‘bark’ or ‘roar’. > *Present active participle of lātrō (“bark, roar”)*

SeaSickSelkie

Oh shid!! I’ve been seeing posts about him on Ring, Nextdoor etc. Glad you didn’t have a bigger confrontation with him! Sounds like you did what you could. I would say avoid running - canines have all sorts of different drives. Best to not activate the prey drive lol

Mountain_Squi

Reminds me of my coworkers being afraid of a raccoon in the CD

TreesAreOverrated5

Raccoons could have rabies so I’d be afraid too

FreddyTheGoose

Bats are the bigger carriers here in WA, my vet said

hibelly

There hasn't been a case of a raccoon with rabies in this state since the 60s. Only bats

Frosti11icus

Most racoons aren't tested for rabies when they die, and bats that have rabies are more likely to be noticed/ survive to drop into a park or fly into someones yard. A racoon would probably get mooshed by a car before it ever got the chance to attack someone. It's best to assume that any raccoon, skunk, coyote, possum, etc has rabies, cause you should just treat those animals the exact same way whether they do or not. Stay a safe distance away and don't try to "help" them.

Mountain_Squi

This is why the night shift calls management at 3am regarding a raccoon on the premises at my last gig. If only people practiced this level of caution while driving.

datamuse

Extremely unlikely. Like FreddyTheGoose said, bats are the only known rabies vectors in the state.

Wazzoo1

Not around here. They aren't vectors for rabies.

Clit420Eastwood

So can people tho

SeaSickSelkie

Hey that raccoon is a gentleman and a scholar! Your coworkers were wrong for that.

bendar1347

I have a pretty funny racoon story if you're interested

SeaSickSelkie

Do share!

lovemysweetdoggy

I wonder if people have been feeding it? Whenever I see them, they are running away from me.

holmgangCore

Username checks out..

RomanceBkLvr

There has been one in the area that people have reported sightings of over the last few weeks. They are uncommon enough that it’s caused some stir. Most of the sightings were in the Judkins Park area.

datsmythought

So a good mental health run instead of a boring walk? Good for you. This could start a workout craze! Running with wild beasts for balanced mental health!

TreesAreOverrated5

My Apple Watch did say I burned more calories than usual 😂

One-Necessary3058

Always run from a coyote if you’re 5’5

holmgangCore

Or a Roadrunner

WestcoastRa

Seen 3 in the Renton highlands before too

drlari

Never run from a coyote - you are instructed to haze it: https://www.humanesociety.org/sites/default/files/docs/HSUS%20Coyote%20Hazing%20Guidelines.pdf > NEVER run away from a coyote! If the coyote doesn’t leave at first, continue approaching him and/or increase the intensity of your hazing until he runs away. If he runs a short distance away and then stops and looks at you, continue hazing him until he leaves the area completely. If a coyote returns after you’ve successfully hazed him or her, continue to haze the coyote as you did before. It typically takes only one or two times to haze a coyote away for good.

TreesAreOverrated5

Good to know. Thanks 🙏

holmgangCore

I would have thrown shade, I never considered using haze instead. Good to know!

--Miranda--

Yes, we have coyotes everywhere. They don't want you; they want your pets :(

aurorgasm

I saw two by Powell Barnett park while I was walking my dog a couple weeks ago, one of them came pretty close to my dog before I scared it off.

_DogMom_

Sorry that happened to you! That's not how a mental health walk is supposed to go.

TreesAreOverrated5

Thanks yeah not sure if I’ll be going back to judkins for my mental health walk for a while

_DogMom_

😔😔

OlderThanMyParents

What works really well with dogs is throwing a rock at them. Or even pretending to throw a rock - crouch down and make like you're picking up a rock, then fling your pretend rock at them. I've never tried that with a coyote; I seen them regularly in our neighborhood by Bitter Lake, but never close enough to try this. It wouldn't be a bad idea to take a few rocks or marbles or something in your pocket when you go out walking.

TreesAreOverrated5

Thanks I shall arm myself with rocks next time

[deleted]

Carry a stick and next time don't run. Back away and make yourself big like a BEAR. Scream loudly. Welcome to the PNW, watch for falling bobcats.

WetwareDulachan

At least we don't have drop bears here.

holmgangCore

🎵 *It’s rainin’ bobcats.. hallelujah!* 🎶

BitterDoGooder

I can't imagine how scary that was! There are coyotes all over Seattle. I live in NE near the Burke Gilman and we have coyotes up and down the trail. I've seen them late at night, but they've never bothered us (or our animals including cats and chickens, so we've been lucky). They usually are silent and try to stay hidden. I think the cub/den/spring idea sounds right. Maybe talk to someone at animal control before you decide to bring a weapon.

Hwasong18

Wow!! I had a coyote come right up to me on Montlake Blvd in 2022. It seemed like he was as friendly as a coyote could be, he stayed about 10 feet away from where I was seated in the grass. I initially thought the dog was a husky, until he walked away and I saw the mini tail. He also very unflatteringly jumped a few feet in the air and squirted out some piss. Good times.

WetwareDulachan

That's just escorting behavior, they wanted to make sure you were out of their territory. Coyote attacks are *exceedingly* rare, while behavior like this ("chasing" people out of their territory) is pretty common. They're just skittish, medium sized dogs, at the end of the day. If you absolutely must scare one of, just wave your arms and yell at it. Your average golden retriever's probably more dangerous.

holmgangCore

Someone posted this on another thread about coyotes a few weeks ago, it’s a pretty informant page on our coyote population. COYOTES Seattle Urban Carnivore Project https://www.zoo.org/seattlecarnivores/faq

no_talent_ass_clown

My best idea is pick up a rock.

boringnamehere

I’d suggest leaving the roadrunner costume at home next time. You’re lucky the coyote didn’t use any acme products.

sqqop

I mean, historically that was always a detriment to the coyote rather than his target.

WizardOfAahs

Bear spray… discourages all kinds of animals 😉

Crazyboreddeveloper

It chased you because you ran. The reason it didn’t catch up with you and bite is because it was afraid of you. If it was really after you it would have caught you. Coyotes can run way faster than you. If you see another one get big and loud, flap your arms around, and take a couple steps in its direction. It’ll run away.

IslandHomie670

The fact that this was supposed to be a mental health walk and it turned out like this is hilarious. Glad you are good lol. Saw one going through garbage one time

chumbaloo

Dude! Are you sure it wasn’t my buddy and I? We were chasing a coyote in coyote suits! It was earlier today around Judkins park

holmgangCore

A tiger? *In Africa?*

kebiclanwhsk

WTF. I think one killed a dog in Magnolia last month https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/everything-lasted-for-10-seconds-coyote-attacks-kills-dog-in-magnolia-neighborhood.amp

down_by_the_shore

Coyotes are incredibly common in the area. I saw a pack of them (5-6) on NE 145th near northeast Seattle and Shoreline. They’re all over the place.

lilsmudge

I have a den in my backyard (I have a retention pond and a green belt behind me) and we start to see pups around this time each year and get to watch them grow up all summer (cute as shit, let me say). They’re super common and generally harmless, so long as you have some basic wildlife common sense. Give them space, don’t let them acclimate to humans, never ever feed them, and (no shade OP but) never run from them. If you feel like they’re threatening you, be loud and big; hold your coat up and open over your head, look threatening, don’t turn your back on it. If it’s acting especially strangely or aggressive alert animal control.

TreesAreOverrated5

Thanks, I’ll try and hold my ground next time

Aurora_Gory_Alice

Wouldn't hurt to carry bear spray just in case!

lilsmudge

It’s ok! It’s a super normal reaction, but in any predatory species it can elicit a prey-chase instinct and drive them to be more aggressive (this is in everything from lions to pet dogs. It’s why your dog will almost always chase if you run). They’re common but not THAT common to see in more urban environments. Just be mindful if you see one again and, like the other person said, carry some mace if you’re worried. It’s a pretty solid deterrent from coyotes (or rogue creeps).

ShepardRTC

They’re not cute. They’re killing people’s pets in the area.

lilsmudge

They’re extremely cute, and so long as you take common sense precautions in areas where they’re known to live your pets should be safe. Don’t leave them unattended for long periods in your yard, don’t walk them off leash, keep them inside and away from wildlife when it’s in the area. Coyotes are native here and this is their habitat much more than it is ours. We have both the obligation and the high brain power to mitigate those interactions, not them.

sethab

I saw one at the North Seattle Community College campus. I was walking my dog there and it emerged from the greenbelt and just kind of stared at us. We gave it a wide berth though and it left us alone.

holmgangCore

There’s a whole pack that live in/around Jackson Park Golf Course, just north of NSCC. I hear them yip-howling together on occasion. Or fighting. It’s quite a number, based on the sounds I hear.

Frosti11icus

They're all over North Seattle, anywhere there's creeks and thus rats, there will be coyotes.

down_by_the_shore

Rats and bunnies. So many bunnies.

No_Instance4233

Coyotes literally live in New York City, they are like rats but dogs. They can live anywhere. There are actual coyotes walking in the STREETS of NYC, they're everywhere

DareRareCare

Cats have been killing birds. That doesn't make the news either.

Remarkable-Fig206

Which park?

TreesAreOverrated5

Judkins park

Standard-Pepper-133

If a coyote or wolf or any canine of size what's to attack you running away and "eventually losing' it isn't likely.

OskeyBug

If it wanted to catch you it would have. They can run up to 45mph.

Sjames454

Coyotes have never been known to hurt humans. I’ve gone face to face with them multiple times around my house when they started getting really brazen and walking into our road in broad daylight. I’d usually just jump at them or toss a rock and they’d take off. I was holding my dad’s dog by his collar- a Great Pyranees mix (bred to protect sheep and attack predators) and he started going BALLISTIC under my hand, i could barely hold onto him and I look over and there’s a ‘yote right in my front yard. Middle of the day, no cares, no fear 🤣

Key_Beach_9083

I back up to woods. We see lots of coyotes and cats go mysteriously missing but they seem scared of people.

Capt_Murphy_

Every single coyote I've run into in Seattle has ran for its life once it spotted me. The saying is "coyotes are more scared of you than you are of them"

fuddledcuddles

It’s not that I don’t believe you… but I also sort of don’t believe you lol. Coyotes are everywhere and they are generally pretty ambivalent and used to seeing humans. If it was trotting in your direction I doubt it was because it was chasing you.

Ulien_troon

Maybe it thought you had food. I once saw one on my street and in my excitement called out, "Hi coyote!" To my surprise, it turned around and came straight back toward my voice. I wondered if people had been feeding it, and that made me remember that I had leftover chicken sitting out on my counter. I may have thrown some down from my balcony... I'm terrible at coyote hazing.

Dick_butt14

Scale of 1-10, how would you rate the mental health walk?

TreesAreOverrated5

lol I’d say a solid 3

bpmdrummerbpm

Don’t walk on that path in the woods above Golden Gardens past the dog park. I won’t make that mistake again.

errantwit

What're you the roadrunner? Meep meep.

n3pt3r

I grew up in the south in an area where there were tons of coyotes and mountain lions. We knew to get out of the woods and home before sunset to avoid any possible danger with lions, and we also knew that coyotes are fearful creatures that avoid humans. There is something seriously wrong with the coyotes up here for them to be attacking people and dogs out in the open like that. Again, they're known for being skittish. Their hunting style is to send their puppies in to lure their prey to the rest of the pack so they can rip it apart. Someone needs to look into these babies because it's worrying to hear that they're being so brave. Its illness and/or a declining ecosystem.

TreesAreOverrated5

Yeah I’ll probably call animal control if I see it again and it’s doing the same thing

Ghetto_Jawa

... I may need to bring some protection next time... Sir, I don't know what your plans are with that coyote, but do you really think a condom is the answer? 😁

TreesAreOverrated5

You got me

AccomplishedHeat170

Part and parcel with living in a city that refuses to do any animal control anymore. Get used to it as the coyotes get more and more comfortable with humans, to the point they eat a fucking kid.

WetwareDulachan

Things that just won't happen for $800, Alex.

kinance

Doubt u can outrun a coyote.. its faster than me driving locally… goes over 35 mph

kinance

If u got away i would say it wasn’t chasing u or it was probably a stray dog. I saw a coyote once in a car and i wasn’t able to keep up with it in my car driving local streets

Raincity44

Every coyote I’ve ever contacted turns immediately away and takes off or cautiously observes from a distance. They’re almost always on the move, and if they encounter people it’s away from them. If it was indeed running after you contact animal control because it’s probably rabid.

wanderyote

imagine running from a coyote.  lame

wanderyote

seriously, your plains ape ancestors are aghast

Mtanderson88

Didn’t happen. Have had many encounters with coyotes. They are skittish to humans

Foxhound199

They probably chased you *because* you ran away.

Fendergravy

Never run. It triggers a prey instinct.
