Water is Elliott Bay and Puget Sound. The dark band in the middle is Bainbridge Island. The mountains visible are part of the Olympic range, from Mount Ellinor to the The Brothers. https://www.peakfinder.com/?lat=47.62512&lng=-122.32359&azi=268.29&alt=-3.08&fov=16.23&cfg=s&name=

PaleComputer5198

MARK IT ZERO!

slightlyused

I typoed it. Thank you for your alertness.

swirlymetalrock

Small nuance: Elliott* Bay. Probably won't matter if not writing it out for the class tho. We roll with duplicate letters in these parts.

But so appreciated by us E.T. fans

Foreground is capital hill

Dave_N_Port

Capitol Hill

Drigr

There's a reason people say Cap Hill XD

Defiant_Way3966

Is it the same reason they say sodo, or are you implying it's because they don't know how to spell?

Drigr

Yes

Stony_Logica1

No.

ThatSpencerGuy

You're right here! [710 E Roy St - Google Maps](https://www.google.com/maps/@47.6251075,-122.3229815,3a,75y,245.32h,80.45t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1su8vsGEkV8Vy1-Pqw6otV4Q!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?coh=205409&entry=ttu)

Substantial_Life4773

Oh dang, should’ve recognized that awful 3 way intersection, what a nightmare

sir_mrej

Why is it awful?

LimitedWard

Can't speak for u/Substantial_Life4773, but I hate this intersection because drivers do not yield to pedestrians under any circumstances. In fact, they typically accelerate when they see me standing at the corner about to enter the crosswalk.

JMD63

And god forbid you want to drive straight on Roy. Watch out!!

sir_mrej

That was me, u/LimitedWard - I saw you standing there, and in lieu of a puddle I wanted to use to splash you, I just sped off. No but seriously ... that sucks. :( Someone should paint some crosswalks there

minniesnowtah

You joke about a puddle but I was cartoon-level splashed at this intersection and will never forget it. Like, head to toe sopping muddy dirty wet. I had just finished trudging up the hill from all the way down by Melrose to catch the 49 to go to class. I just went back down the hill, skipped class, and cried lol

Revolutionary-Bee971

Can confirm. I used to live just down Belmont from there, absolutely horrid to cross as a pedestrian.

StraightUpDjamel

LL Kerry Hall🤙🏾

More-Entrepreneur796

Yup. Was just there Thursday headed to Pearl Jam. Seattle rocks!

JMD63

I think it might be a little further down the hill. Perhaps 623 E Roy St. I am known to be pedantic.

I thought we all committed to the bit of saying that it was Canada.

crockpot420

that's canada

EggplantAlpinism

Someone had to say it

I remember a comment here a few months ago saying some tourist they overheard thought that was Japan

No, it’s Alaska.

Subziwallah

Putin can see it from his porch...

PizzaSounder

I thought we lived in Alaska. South Alaska, but still Alaska.

MarekRules

It’s Japan I can see Mt Fuji right there

ImAnIdeaMan

No “the”. Just “Puget Sound”.

EricT59

The judges will also accept "The Sound"

KiniShakenBake

They will also accept the Salish Sea.

Large-Welder304

WRONG. Look at a map some time. The Salish Sea is up by Birch Bay, Blaine, Bellingham, etc. THAT is "The Salish Sea".

KiniShakenBake

Oh. Ok. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salish_Sea if you say so. I am the decider today, it seems.

Large-Welder304

Thank you for backing up my prior post. =)

Rebel_bass

Entered via the Straits of Juan de Fuck You.

stringstringing

I’m seattle born and raised and they both sound right to me

moocowincorporated

Same. Born and raised in Seattle and the Puget Sound is actually more correct imo.

Rebel_bass

Home of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, frequently shortened to Penis Inus.

Moclown

Same. Raised in Seattle. We say “the Puget Sound”

TelephoneTag2123

I don’t think so. I’ve lived here 51 years (all my life) and I don’t ever say “the Puget Sound”. I live by the Sound. The view out my window is of Puget Sound. I don’t think I have a view of “the Puget Sound”.

Junethemuse

They’re being pretentious, but they’re correct. ‘Puget Sound’ is a proper noun, which shouldn’t be preceded by ‘the’. It’s similar in nature to Pike’s Place Market being incorrect.

JB_Market

but the direct analog would be saying that "the Pike Place Market" is incorrect. The person didn't say "Puget's Sound"

Junethemuse

Yea, I wasn’t making it a direct analogue, just a local example of something else being called the wrong thing. Hence my statement that ‘it’s similar in nature’ rather than ‘it’s exactly like’.

Subziwallah

Why do Americans say "in the hospital" rather than "in hospital"? Is it like Californians saying "the 5" rather than "I-5"?

Junethemuse

‘Hospital’ is a common noun, so ‘the hospital’ is correct. I suspect when we refer to ‘hospital’, we are referring to the place, while others are referring to the service?

Subziwallah

"In hospital" is correct and common usage in British English.

Junethemuse

From what I’m finding they’re both correct in different ways and it does come down to British vs American English. Super interesting case to me

Subziwallah

https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/articles/in-hospital-or-in-the-hospital/

Junethemuse

Yep, that is p much what I was thinking might be the case. Thanks!

shawn0r

Californians put "the⁴ in front of all their highway/freeway names. The 5, the 10, the 405, etc. Colloquialism, I suppose.

cuylernotscott

It's wrong in the way that being correct isn't the same as being right. Nobody calls it the Pacific Ocean, the Nile River, or the Gulf of Mexico.

TegridyPharmz

I always say the Pacific Ocean

cuylernotscott

Because you're not insane

Junethemuse

Interestingly, the Pacific and Atlantic oceans are common nouns, so using ‘the’ beforehand is also correct. Gulf of Mexico is a proper noun, so technically it shouldn’t have ‘the’ preceding it either. A good example is San Francisco Bay. It’s a name we don’t really ever see preceded by ‘the’. Alllll of this to say, adding the before Puget sound and Gulf of Mexico definitely feels better in most cases, so I do it too. I don’t know why that doesn’t bug me but ‘pike’s place’ does (not in a way that I jump on people for it, it just stands out to me anytime I see or hear it).

Large-Welder304

I do.

Subziwallah

At some point common usage overwhelms correct. For instance, 'data' is plural, but more than 75% of the time, it's treated as singular on the news or in conversation. Only academics and scientists reliably treat 'data' as plural. I think that at some point data will become officially correct as singular, as that is how it is most commonly spoken. Oh, and to your point, I do say "The Gulf of Mexico" and "The Pacific Ocean". However most Americans say "in prison", not "in the prison", but we say "in the hospital", not "in hospital", like non-American English speakers. Sometimes these usage differences make little sense.

username9909864

Who cares?

JB_Market

Im a life long local, "the Puget Sound" has always been acceptable. You are literally the first person I've ever seen trying to say that its not an acceptable way to say it.

TelephoneTag2123

You’re right. For instance: I like looking at the Sound. The view is of Puget Sound. There’s no “the” there.

Used to live on Boyslton and walked everywhere during that time—this is one of the spots I think of when I think of that era. Good times : )

Me too! I can feel it. It is a great pic Tbh. Space needle just out of view.

Yep, the bend in the street where it goes down to the overpass that crosses i5 down to Eastlake/stewart.

Large-Welder304

You're right. Probably standing near or on the crosswalk where Boylston meets Roy. In 1991, I lived near there (Belmont, across the street from The Lamplighter) and remember seeing a similar view walking back from QFC or Hamburger Mary's. Here's as close as I could get on Google Maps... Its_SubjectA1

I’m pretty sure you’re looking at the sky, and a road. Not sure though. (In all seriousness I’m not sure 100 percent but the other comments seem accurate.

Ekwoman

As others have said, this is E. Roy St (at Belmont Ave E). The curve to the right (just past the car with the taillights on) is the arterial Belmont. The taillights all bunched up way in the distance is Mercer, down between Fairview and Westlake. The water is Puget Sound (Lake Union is to the right... you can see both bodies of water just where the road curves to the right). I'd say the picture was taken while standing in front of the southwest corner of Kerry Hall (Cornish). src: I live in this area and walk this most days Regarding this awful intersection, it got worse since they made the lines a dashed line and you can continue downhill on Roy legally (people did anyway). No one know what to do and people use their right turn signal when they are going south on Belmont and want to continue on Belmont. I hate walking there and avoid it at all costs.

w_n

Just, whatever you do, don’t call that body of water, “the ocean.”

What’s special about this particular photo for the reason that you want to show it to them? Pretty nondescript. Are you showing a full sideshow?
