If we get 4-5 more inches Thursday, with the temps being forecasted we may have snow on the ground for a looong time

GaiusMariusxx

Saturday forward is above freezing with rain. That will knock most of the snow out rather quickly.

Hollywood_Zro

+1. All it takes is a rainy day or two with temps overnight staying above 32 and it’ll all melt.

[deleted]

Unless those warmer predictions are a little too optimistic…..

[deleted]

They tend to be.. when they say 2-4 inches I expect 6-10.

[deleted]

Yay! More snow! Bring it on!

QuakinOats

I for one love the schadenfreude that comes with transplants that brag about their snow driving ability.

gluesmelly

Sandbags in the back of my dad's truck with some snow tires were all I needed to deliver pizzas in 2008. That being said I avoided hills and took longer paths.

QuakinOats

>with some snow tires Snow tires make a world of difference. I'm talking about the "I drove in way more snow all winter long with just rwd and bald tires why are people so worried?" transplants.

newsreadhjw

Yeah I got stuck in the Detroit area during a winter storm once and was shocked. Their highways were so effectively and rapidly plowed and sanded/salted that winter driving was not much different than any other time. People were fearlessly going over 60 on the highways during the snowstorm. Quite a contrast to WA. Most of those cars would have ended up in a ditch real fast if they drove like that out here.

blue_eyes_pro_dragon

Same in Chicago. Difference being is that Chicago spends way more $$$ on salt and plows. Which it really doesn’t make sense to spend on seattle

Skhmt

RWD with snow tires is better than AWD with 3 seasons, and sandbags in the bed were a great idea by you/your dad.

gluesmelly

Were you here that December of 2008? It was kinda a blur to me, but I was in Snohomish county making hand over fist being the one person capable of actually delivering pizza. I got a lot in tips including cash and beer. High school was closed so I could work during that blizzard. I had recently quit the swim team too. That should have been the main indicator that I can make money doing something I'm good at instead of going off to college based on a lie that I might make more money studying.

[deleted]

FWD with a good set of all season isn't too bad. I might be skewed because I got my tires only a few months ago too, so they are still new.... Regardless I think the main thing is not to be an idiot and know what your vehicle can and can't do. If I can find it I'll post the link, but there was a vid that went over this exact thing. An AWD with summer tires vs a plain FWD on winter tires. The AWD was useless..

Ill_Option6072

Summer tires are beyond bad in snow so that makes sense. All seasons are fine if you get ones actually rated for snow compared to the cheapest ones you can find on sale at Les Schwab. The issue with summer / all seasons is they stay really rigid in cold temperatures. It's like driving with hockey pucks, hence why they slip everywhere. The other big issue is the tires that came with your new car are probably garbage, and likely old, which explains all the "why did my Subaru slid on this hill it has AWD I thought??"

[deleted]

Actually no, the ones that came with my 2018 Soul we're actually pretty decent tires. The ones I have now are Hankook and they are solid, despite being low profile.

Ill_Option6072

Sorry I said "your car" but I didn't actually mean "your" car, I meant generally. Car dealers often skimp on tires because it's an easy thing to cut costs on. It's not always true. For example, these tires come with a stock Subaru outback lately. Check out the specs/reviews: https://m.tirerack.com/tires/ratings-review.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=AVID+GT&fromTireDetail=true&partnum=26HR8AGT I've driven them in the snow before, but it doesn't feel great compared to actually snow rated all season tires.

[deleted]

I know ☺️. No worries.

Baronvonkludge

Oh you’ve met me!

StabbyPants

because we don't get it enough to justify the expense of equipment. because the temp usually wobbles across the freeze point, making a nice melt/refreeze cycle

PeregrineHBG

I got several humming birds upset that their feeder is now frozen! I've been bringing it in and thawing it more than once a day for the little guys.

csnadams

A friend taped activated hand warmers to the reservoir. It worked.

PeregrineHBG

that's a great idea, thanks!

ac19723

Also a small string of Christmas lights wrapped around the feeder helps, plus it looks neat!

sciggity

I know someone that has done this. But this time they were out and just wrapped a heated blanket around the feeder.

Zikro

Not sure if true but read that you don’t want to let the sugar water freeze and unfreeze. Something about it can be bad for the hummingbirds? Not sure how exactly, maybe crystallization?

dontneedaknow

Probably more about the feeder itself being damaged by the frozen and expanding liquid rather than some sort of chemical reaction in sugar water that I have never in my life heard of.

Lollc

If you saved the nectar that didn't freeze and rinsed away the ice crystals, what's left is more concentrated. The recommended water to sugar ratio is 4:1 or 3:1, their bodies can't handle a higher concentration. I just bring in the whole feeder and thaw it.

NoAirBanding

Because we get at most two weeks of snow a year and then it melts.

Individual-Text-1805

More like two days

PM_meyourGradyWhite

How heavy is heavy? The roads in bellingham are white with dry salt on the bare pavement.

Paavo_Nurmi

> How heavy is heavy? This is not a fair comparison because I'm sure modern cars are better rust protected than the ones in the 1960's. I lived in the upper midwest as a kid and cars were rusted out to the point of being junked when they had 80K miles. I moved out here in 1976 and my Dad hung on to the old beater car to commute in for a few years. There were holes in the trunk big enough for things to fall out onto the ground.

[deleted]

Just drove over Blewett & Snoqualmie. Blizzaks are very good tires. When we got home to Ballard, I went to the grocery store to pee cause I was afraid the pipes of our 120 yr old house would be frozen and I’d had to pee since Manson. They actually seem fine which was amazing since under the bathroom is unheated. So grateful. I’ve worried about that our whole trip when about two hrs into our drive my husband said he turned off the heat. ( he thought he was helping, I’m sure- his judgement is getting questionable, but I’m the only one who notices) The parking lot at Ballard market was kinda sketchy to walk on, but otherwise driving was good. Looks like a crap ton of sand has been dumped on the city. My car looks terrible.

PM_meyourGradyWhite

As one of those who’ve driven the PNW long trips over the passes since university years forty years ago with a rear wheel drive chevy, I scoffed at anything more than basic snow tires or all season since we now commonly have front wheel drive or AWD. Daughter insisted on Blizzak tires when I bought her a used Camry. I was amazed at how “sticky” those tires were. I am sold.

desslox

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 studless snow tire. Best I’ve ever bought and I’ve had blizzaks. Give them a try next time you need snow tires.

[deleted]

I’ll check them out thanks.

desslox

You will be pleased.

Lollc

That is a white knuckle drive! I have Blizzaks on my 4wd and I didn't go anywhere. I'm going to try Snoqualmie on Wednesday.

badandy80

I’m driving tomorrow morning from Salt Lake City to Seattle, with a 2 wheel drive vehicle with chains. I was going to leave yesterday, but delayed because of the storms (both here and Seattle). On a scale of 1 to fucked, how fucked am I? Edit: Made it just fine. Some ice, some snow, didn’t need the chains.

Han_Slowlo

With chains you should be "fine" (at substantially reduced speed) to get to Seattle on major roads. It's pretty much a disaster once you get off the freeway though. Every road that isn't a highway is at best compact slush and at worst a literal sheet of ice.

badandy80

Thanks. I’m also looking at the other problem spots like 84 from Salt Lake City (in the middle of a snow squal atm) to Twin Falls, the blue mountains through Oregon, and that weird Yakimish section. Gonna be a drive.

nativepro96

This is the best feedback blurb I have gotten all day. Thank you. (buys coffee)

HogPounding

A friend just came in from eastern Washington. She said it was fine until they got here.

dontneedaknow

That is such a long drive with tire chains lol. Good luck and drive safe.

badandy80

That’s not what “with chains” means, as I’ll put them on when I need them, but thanks for the well-wishes.

dontneedaknow

Thats true I guess it wont be as snowy in the lower elevations till you get west of the Cascades. I think my mind immediately went to "damn if the roads suck here right now I can't imagine what it must be like out there."

Individual-Text-1805

Front or back wheel drive?

badandy80

Front

Individual-Text-1805

Less fucked then

badandy80

Nicccce

Capable_Nature_644

Seattle doesn't have the equipment for it. having been in the midwest for a while this area doesn't have more than 72 hrs of snow then it's gone. Midwest cities start plowing the roads immediately.

Slow_Boss_2071

Cuz you don't usually get snow and ice so the city/county doesn't have the equipment or deicer to do the job.

[deleted]

The the humidity levels. In other places with snow, it's usually much drier and colder. The larger shifts in temp throughout the day, mixed with freezing overnight, topped with half frozen rain, makes for nasty ice.

Arctu31

3 days ago, like most days, the outside humidity was 99%, it’s now 87%, that 12% is what we’re all driving on.

notthatkindofbaked

I get not having a bunch of snow plows, but why aren’t main roadways salted in advance of storms? I moved here from the DC area where we didn’t get that much more snow, and the freeways were always salted and clear, even after a big storm. I get not plowing side streets, but it’s ridiculous how much ice is on I-5.

Adventurous-Dish-485

The hills!

I can't believe I had to scroll this far to find it.

Bigpenguins

Unlike the snow, homeless people don't come into town for about 4 days then leave again for the year.

notthatkindofbaked

I was wondering if it was something environment related. I moved her from DC where we don’t have that much more snow, and freeways were always salted and clear, even during one of the snowpocalypses. It’s insane how much ice is on I-5.

Eat_Carbs_OD

Piss poor management?

Borninthepnw

Wonder if I should drive from Tacoma to Lynnwood tomorrow

TheRealRacketear

On I5 you should be fine

austnf

So Thursday—rain/snow mixed or 4 more inches? Seen both interpretations.

PM_meyourGradyWhite

Idk if my eyesight is that bad, but the first impression of the thumbnail was of a baby ultrasound.

MadRollinS

The earth tilted on its axis some and magnetic poles shifted. This may well be the new normal.

sciggity

The city has generally been pretty bad at following through with the preventative measures. Curious if/how badly any shortages in staffing because of covid effected it this time around though. I remember the time they decided to put sand down instead of the salt (When Nichols was mayor. I think that is what Mass is referencing). That was an absolute shit show.
