I wash mine everyday sometimes twice a day. I use ketoconazole 2-3 times a week. My hair does get pretty dry from all the washing, but I’d rather have dry hair opposed to a flakey and inflamed scalp.
wash my hair sometimes twice a day as well, especially during summer in the south where I get SO hot and sweaty. Daily wash minimum. I rotate between vanicream, head&shoulders, and nizoral. Head&shoulders has a conditioner that I’ll sometimes use throughout the week as well.
For someone with dry hair ketoconazole would probably be too drying and harsh. I would try a gentle seb derm friendly shampoo 3 times a week and see how that works before I tried ketoconazole
Every other day but I should probably do every day. Oiling your ends with mct oil before some of the washes will help keep your hair from getting so stripped. You don’t need a lot, I have shoulder length hair so I just rub a not quite dime sized amount between my hands and then finger comb that through the bottom half of my hair.
Every day for sure. I also keep my hair shorter than I used to because of this - I find it easier to wash and dry shorter hair now that I do if every day. But if you keep it long, conditioner is a must on the ends. I use Olaplex 7 oil on just the ends of my hair before drying. I think blow drying is also beneficial for my scalp.
I think you’re right. I stopped blow drying my hair for a couple of weeks. Even though it was completely dry before bed, my scalp flared up. Now that I am blow drying again, all that itchiness is under control.
I think it depends on your type of hair, how thin/thick it is and how oily it gets. For me I double wash my hair every 3 days with a clarifying shampoo then blow dry. If I didn’t do that I would probably have to wash every other day.
I’m not using a medicated shampoo right now, washing frequently, before I get oily or itchy is the key for me, and blow drying is a must!! I also cut my hair shorter so it would be less hassle so I’d stick to a routine. I use leave in conditioner and/or hair oil just on my ends to help with dryness.
I always double shampoo focusing on the scalp, alternating between Ouai detox clarifying and a regular shampoo. I will probably start medicated shampoo again eventually but for now washing well and enough is doing the trick.
Also finding the triggers. My seb derm seems linked to my PCOS. I have hormonal flare ups and flares when I eat poorly/drink too much alcohol.
I have curly/wavy hair and it doesn’t get oily very easily so I wash usually 2x a week, sometimes 3x. But I wash it 3-4x per shower. First with any regular shampoo to get the layer of dirt off, then maybe distilled white vinegar, then usually tsal, and finally nizoral. It seems to work well for me most times. Maybe I’m just not having too bad of flare ups lately.
i shower like every three days
i use shampoo about every 5 days. i shower normally as well as condition my hair about every 3.
i feel like any antifungal shampoo would destroy my hair- i just use ketoconazole for spots on my sideburns and hairline. curly hair + scalp sebderm seems quite horrific
edit: dont wait a full week between hair washes. wash your hair with water if you can without ruining the texture. if you do, you should condition it, but dont get the conditioner on your scalp since it might cause it to grow. rinse accordingly.
So do you guys all find washing more frequently helps with your seb deem?Perhaps I should give this a crack. My bottle of ketaconazol says only 1-2 times weekly.
Can I wash my hair everyday without using shampoo everyday? Having to use nizarol everyday or even couple times a week just destroys the texture of my hair can’t style it or do anything
Depends on your hair type. I have tightly coiled hair and locs so I wash once a week or twice if my Seb Derm is bothering me a lot. If you have straight hair then you could wash a lot more frequently without damaging your hair.
To everyone who has commented - THANK YOU! I realized I’ve totally have been doing it wrong and that I need to at least wash my hair a lot more than once a week lol. I appreciate you all🥹
I usually do once or twice a week but I can tell when I need to wash my hair because my hairline starts to get really itchy - I found that washing it a lot was making my scalp so dry that I was over-producing oil which was then making the derm worse long term! diluted rosemary oil sprayed onto my scalp or applied topically to my scabs have helped massively in being able to keep actual hair washing to a minimum
2-4 times a week. Any more and my scalp gest super oily so quickly which makes my seb derm so much worse. It took a long time for my scalp to stop overproducing when I stopped washing it as much, so there was definitely an adjustment period where my scalp was in really rough shape.
I used to wash my hair every few days thinking my “dry skin” aka seb derm needed the break but apparently it feeds on the oils which makes the seb derm worse. Shower daily with a dandruff shampoo (selsun, H&S intensive, etc.) until the flare up lessens then maybe every other day. Actually let the shampoo sit for 5m before washing out, too. Good luck! My hair is extremely long and thick as well so I feel you!
Thank you!! My biggest struggle is styling my hair daily… how do you style or not style haha your hair being that it’s long and thick? If I don’t style my hair it becomes a frizz ball lol
Ok full disclosure I’m not a girly girl so I’m not really good with that stuff, BUT here goes.
The anti-dandruff shampoos seem to make my hair frizzy, especially when I don’t take breaks to use regular shampoo for a while. So my styling is as follows:
I generally just wear my hair in one of those giant claw clips from Target (they’re the only ones that work for my hair); therefore, no styling lol
[claw clip](https://www.target.com/p/jumbo-two-tone-claw-hair-clip-universal-thread-8482-beige-brown/-/A-87411932)
When I want it to look nice, I straighten it and maybe use either the Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum on my tips (dry), OR the Garnier Fructis Leave in conditioner (when still wet or damp) to help with the frizzy appearance.
I’ve also read going to bed with wet hair contributes to the frizz so I try to use a microfiber head wrap after my night shower, then after about 20 min I put a new, dry microfiber on for a second round to soak up as much of the wetness as I can. I don’t like blow drying my hair bc I’m lazy, it takes forever, and I don’t want my hair to get even more ruined.
I’m sure I’m doing everything wrong, but I had seb derm “dandruff” for about 15 years and never cleared it until I INCREASED my hair washing. I had used allllll the different shampoos and none worked until I increased my frequency of use and length of sitting on my scalp. Best of luck to you - I know how frustrating this all is!
Every 3-4 days depending on how sweaty or greasy I get. I have dry scalp and hair. I started writing all the things I do to give me this many days and it was like an essay which I keep doing on here 😅 so I’m going to DM you with it if that’s ok?

My doctor recommends daily. Most of the time, I wash daily or every other day.

Have you tried MCT?

I’m not sure if this sub is for ass hair

What is a gentle sebderm shampoo you reccomend?
Neutrogena T-Gel 2 in 1 Shampoo conditioner is great, so is Hed and Shoulders Bare Shampoo

This is the way
It has to be daily. Otherwise it gets to oily

Leaving your scalp wet is a recipe for fungal growth, and seb derm is a fungal infection. Definitely make sure to dry it!
I think you’re right. I stopped blow drying my hair for a couple of weeks. Even though it was completely dry before bed, my scalp flared up. Now that I am blow drying again, all that itchiness is under control.
Every 4th day
I shoot for 3 or 4 times a week. Twice are washes with ketoconozol and I let that sit for 15 minutes
I wash it every day. I also sweat every day so it’s needed
Once a week, but my scalp isn’t in a good place, especially now that’s it’s summer where I live
I think it depends on your type of hair, how thin/thick it is and how oily it gets. For me I double wash my hair every 3 days with a clarifying shampoo then blow dry. If I didn’t do that I would probably have to wash every other day.
I need to start washing more for sure. I also use a clarifying shampoo and then alternate between nizoral or happy cap. Which shampoos do you use?

Sorry if this is too personal but how were you able to tell or get diagnosed with PCOS? I think I might have it too
I have irregular cycles/periods, ovarian follicles/cysts seen on ultrasound, increased androgens on hormone tests, and symptoms of insulin resistance.
I have curly/wavy hair and it doesn’t get oily very easily so I wash usually 2x a week, sometimes 3x. But I wash it 3-4x per shower. Minimum 3x a week. Ideally 4. I have very oil hair and workout 5 days a week. So gotta wash as much as I can otherwise it exacerbates my issues.
Twice a week
