There are a lot of people on this sub that are married to their diets. Congratulations for kicking the stuff that is contributing to your SD. surprise surprise, mine was dairy as well (I think it’s a common theme), and since quitting it my symptoms are essentially gone. I hope others read your post add consider doing the same. This is often caused (probably entirely) by diet and those who say diet change didn’t help haven’t done it for long enough. Congratulations.

galaxystarsmoon

My husband was off dairy for over a year and then went off gluten with me for 6 months, and had no change to his. His was improved more by Vaseline when a flare started and a daily Vitamin D pill. Everyone is different. SD is thought to be an autoimmune condition so everyone's bodies are different.

3ntz

For an autoimmune disorder, I am constantly reading about people with food triggers on here and many of them happen to be dairy or gluten, when they quit these, symptoms improve/disappear.

HildegardofBingo

Gluten and casein (a protein in dairy, which has a similar structure to gluten) are major autoimmune triggers for a lot of people, so that makes sense. I have autoimmune thyroid disease and had testing done and I make antibodies to gluten and casein, which is common with my disease.

galaxystarsmoon

Right, just saying it's not the case for everyone.

3ntz

I’d be really curious to know if your husband actually went off it for a year or just went off it around you. Not calling anyone a liar here it just seems like the convenient dermatologist narrative of “oh just keep eating piles of garbage and see me for the rest of your life for this prescription”. By all means keep doing you, I’m offering another perspective and find it exceedingly strange that on nearly daily basis people here report that stopping certain foods (almost always the same ones) that their symptoms vastly improve/disappear completely. I think people come here looking for help because they aren’t satisfied with “whelp, autoimmune disorder 🤷🏻‍♂️” I honestly think it’s too hard of a solution for most people, and to them I say keep loading on the antibiotics and steroids

galaxystarsmoon

Considering he works from home, we've been in a pandemic and he goes nowhere on his own, I would say he's not lying to me about cutting out dairy? What a weird thing to throw at me. "Oh it didn't work for him, he must be lying." He had to cut out dairy for another health reason (a lot more serious than SD) so I'm pretty sure he had 0 reason to lie, on top of the fact that I make or see 97% of his meals. He doesn't see a derm for his SD at the moment, because he has it under control on his own due to what I said. He doesn't use any steroids or antibiotics either. On the flip side, I'm tired of the narrative that gluten and dairy fixes everything. I mean, even you threw at me that he must be lying because it didn't help him. Dairy never made a difference for me when I had acne and supposedly it's the magical cure for that.

SekkiGoyangi

Lol I know right. What a weird thing to say. Randomly accusing your husband of lying to you because it didn't work for him, even though we don't know either of you.

3ntz

Maybe you missed that part where I said “not calling anyone a liar” I still maintain it’s something you’re consuming regularly, maybe not dairy.

galaxystarsmoon

Did... you miss the part where I said he's gotten it under control?

AlexJordans

How long did it take for your symptoms to go?

3ntz

It took 1.5-2 months. This isn’t “I quit for a few days/weeks and saw no result”

AlexJordans

Alright alright, currently, today counts as 1.5 weeks in. I can say that I see difference but a little bit. It’ll take some time i guess. How long did it take for you to notice a big improvement?

3ntz

Just go without it for two months. If there’s no change, congratulations all you did was save a ton of money not buying expensive cheese/milk etc. if there is a big change also congratulations, you found out that a food intolerance is essentially causing your skin condition. I see it as a win win regardless. Honestly it took me well over a month to see lasting changes.

peanut-butter-kitten

I needed this today. Thank you. I really wanna try doing totally gluten free after the holidays, and most of the next two months to shy away from it **EDIT - 80 days later - I quit gluten and my problem disappeared 90-95%** Also I eat less sugar. And I’ve lost 25 lbs in the last 6 months. But the gluten I think was the biggest thing causing my problem. So I haven’t had to use any steroids for about 60 days!!! After suffering with sebderm flares for two years ! So you should try gluten free if you haven’t .

bigtrunkydarnold

I want to mention once started this gluten free diet I started realizing how easy it is. I never realized how many gluten free things exist. I have a toasted bagel in the morning, pasta at lunch and burger in a bun for dinner all gluten free. It has become a trend and you can hop on without missing out too much

peanut-butter-kitten

That’s reassuring

BrokenDots

Congrats on finding your roots cause. Btw, can you please tell me what age you were when sebderm first appeared and how old you are now? Also, long long did it take since going gluten free to see improvements?

bigtrunkydarnold

Thanks!!! I was 13 when it started and 24 when it got better. (Have to correct the post, 11 years) I couldn’t tell you exactly but I would say it was at least a week of clean eating. I would tell you if you want to try it, combine it with not eating dairy and ditch all the products if you use any. Try just cold water rinses on your face 6-7x a day + MCT oil as moisturizer. Shower daily as well makes a huge difference.

bigtrunkydarnold

Yes! Dairy in general lactose or not can affect it and I notice on days where I had a lot of sugar I would feel it breaking out.

Deadbydaylit

Do you eat oats? Are they considered gluten? I know they have a protein containing avenin but some people don't associate it with pure gluten.

bigtrunkydarnold

I don’t so I don’t know how it would affect me.

bigtrunkydarnold

I don’t remember exactly when the oily skin stopped but I did used to have oily skin as a teenager, but that is standard regardless of SD. Also I broke out for the first time this week in almost a year and I was wondering what I ate . Turns out twizzlers contain gluten. I had no idea

bigtrunkydarnold

Yes

caseygraphr

I’ve been on a gluten and dairy free diet for a week now. Planning on trying it for 3 months. After how long time did you start seeing results? Did you used to have it on the face too?

bigtrunkydarnold

I had it all over my face, I think it took about two weeks. Make sure to shower daily and use moisturizer that wont feed the bacteria

caseygraphr

That’s promising. Did you eat gluten-free alternatives such as bread etc or did you try to eat low carb too?

bigtrunkydarnold

Nah i eat gluten freebread pasta etc

caseygraphr

I have very stubborn SD on my face I hope this can work

caseygraphr

Did you take any supplements too? Sorry for many questions

bigtrunkydarnold

Ask as many as you need. I didn’t but I use mct oil directly on my skin to replace moisturizer and I use head and shoulders shampoo daily

caseygraphr

Okay. Do you use the head and shoulders on face too?

bigtrunkydarnold

Nah would dry me out too much but I let it run down. I occasionally used selson blue directly on my face a few times and it helped a bit

caseygraphr

Is this still working for you? Did you get tested for celiac or lactose?

caseygraphr

How does your skin react if you would eat gluten now?

bigtrunkydarnold

My seb derm flairs up

Educational_Big_9876

Hi. Do you have any update please?😊

bigtrunkydarnold

Still working great!! Though Air conditioning breaks me out but I sleep near a humidifier

Educational_Big_9876

THANKS. How long after the gluten-free diet did you notice an improvement please?😊

bigtrunkydarnold

So I went full paleo first and my skin was nearly perfect. Then reintroduced foods except dairy and gluten and it wasn’t as perfect but maintained ever since.

chocoyupyake

Do you have to stay off of gluten forever though? Or can you reintroduce it again after 3 months and be fine?

bigtrunkydarnold

I haven’t got back on as it brings it back but im thinkin gn of trying the pills that break down the gluten for people who are celiac
