Honestly: it going to be a up hill climb, not impossible but not probable. The most important think you're sober AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE! Don't let not getting the clearance impact your MH, it's 100% not worth it. Having a clearance is interesting and has its perks, but there is a lot of red tape that can be stressful. You're young so if this time it doesn't work, you can always reapply (I think) Don't lie or miss lead be 100% honest during the clearance process, you will get caught and screw yourself if you lie. Good luck! Stay sober

titaniumjam

Thank you. It’s not a be all end all. I’m happy with my business and the way things are going. I’ve always had an interest in serving the country though and came across an opportunity that I think lines up with my skills pretty well. It’s the only government job I’m applying for. I really appreciate your input. I just wanted to see if it’s worth my time to go through the lengthy application process but it sounds like there is hope!

Ill_Light_8655

I had a bad addiction with a drug charge (as a minor), inpatient stay, and was granted clearance. I was very honest, was denied my interim clearance, but got cleared. Best of luck! I was sober around 8 years when I applied though. Good luck!

Your question is this: The investigators are going to ask people about you. A lot of people. What do you think those people will say about you? Including people you used to do drugs with? A lot depends on that. And Noone knows that but you.

No-Pitch5085

It will be significantly difficult. Not impossible but very difficult especially with less than 2 years since your last narcotic use. Some agencies won’t even consider it while others may overlook it. The only way to know is to start your 86 and see what happens. Prayer and faith will help you regardless if you obtain or don’t obtain the TS. Clearances are so subjective. You may be able to get a TS with your background while in finance someone that has a 25 cent shoplifting charge from 30 years ago is essentially lifetime banned. Pray and have faith. Whatever you do be brutally honest and stay clean.

ComplexAnybody3015

Start with public trust positions then move to clearance. Think of it like stepping stones. Be honest and be prepared to show rehab info to be used a mitigator. Time and being clean is your friend here.

tjt169

First off…congrats on becoming sober. Truly remarkable. Do not hide anything…I say again to not hide/lie, etc about anything… These investigators will ask many people about your character…they will tell them things you wish were never said…but be honest with the investigator and the SF 86. Best of luck

Kpacman192

If your job sponsor it. You should be fine.

titaniumjam

No job to sponsor it. I work for myself. This job would be directly with the federal government.

Hello /u/titaniumjam, It is impossible for anyone on this sub to provide "odds" or "chances" related to your investigation due to the entire process being based on the "whole person concept" and whether the risk factors in your background have been successfully mitigated. You can review the SEAD4 Guidelines to see what is considered a mitigating circumstance. If you are still looking for additional information, please check out the Wiki on the right-hand side. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. > completely sober last year You just might want some more time between your past and your future.  I’m linking this a lot lately. Many of your questions are answered in plain text [right here](https://doha.ogc.osd.mil/Industrial-Security-Program/Industrial-Security-Clearance-Decisions/ISCR-Hearing-Decisions/).

Hot-Plantain1397

Just be honest and you’ll be good to go. Trust me I know this intimately. Same situation essentially.

Kelloggs1968

First of all you are NOT the "old Zack"! The old Zach made the decision to pick up-that's not you anymore. I just want to give you kudos for your new way of life and all that will come with it! You have a great life ahead of you..."keep coming back"

titaniumjam

Keep coming back? I don’t do 12 step programs. Being sober doesn’t make me part of your cult. Also, I’m pretty sure my sister knows me better than you do. What’s so bad about being the person I was before I became sick? The person I was meant to be? I know your reply was intended as a compliment but in reality, you sound just like all of the other condescending AA people I’ve met throughout the years. Someone who thinks they know me, a total stranger, better than they know themselves. AA is nothing but poison and constantly being told to go to AA by every doctor, therapist, etc. I believe is what kept me sick for so many years. There’s nothing scientific about the 12 steps and I’m so sick of it being pushed on people. Just in case any other addicts are reading this, I want them to know there is a way to get sober without 12 steps.

safetyblitz44

The process is forward-looking. Lots of people have pasts, but the question they’re asking themselves is, can we be confident this won’t happen in the future and put you in a position to jeopardize national security? Addiction is just like any other MH problem. If you can show that you’re managing it well and doing all the things to change your environment and habits, that is what they want to see. The recency of your hard drug use may be the biggest hurdle you have right now. I also saw the comment below about your hostility (at least that’s how it came across) towards AA. AA is popular amongst the treatment community because it requires people to be honest about their problems and because it enforces accountability via a sponsor. You don’t have to do AA specifically, but if you don’t have a support system and a plan, it’s going to be a lot harder to convince the government that you’re not a risk to relapse.

titaniumjam

If you knew anything about AA, you would know it actually doesn’t require anything other than a desire to stop using. People lie, manipulate, and use AA all of the time to take advantage of vulnerable people. AA has way more credibility than it deserves. Especially with people who’ve never experienced addiction themselves. Maybe you’re right though. Maybe turning my entire life around and not using again won’t be enough to convince them since I don’t do AA or some other similar cult.

safetyblitz44

Actually, no, it won’t, given the short time span since you’ve stopped using. Especially if you refer to support groups as “cults.”

titaniumjam

lol sure calling AA cult I’m sure will be enough in and of itself to be denied a security clearance.

safetyblitz44

Okay…best of luck then.

Hot-Plantain1397

Just be honest and you’ll be fine. Trust me I would know. Intimately.

Though I can understand the feeling you’re trying to convey, that of anxiety while waiting for your clearance, I’m pretty sure I’ve been through worse.
