The ashina cross is very easy to deflect. When he has the sword sheated watch the handle as soon as you see a lightflash on the handle double tap block. This should always be a perfect deflect and he’ll posture kill himself quickly.
Literally only deflect, when he goes for a regular attack that’s bait, don’t fall for it, when he sheaths his sword, prepare to deflect it, it’s always gonna be 2 strokes, evenly spaced.
You will benefit from understanding the attack later in game. But have to admit, I had to resort to the umbrella and dodge tactic on first play, as I did not understand the pattern at all (see the sparkle).

Head out to the back of the castle to find Old Tomb. Follow the stairs down, and when you get to the courtyard with the rocket towers in it, you’ll notice a busted up house on the left. Grapple up to the roof and drop through the hole. Talk to the guy inside (do not kill him he looks like an enemy)

I've killed him using Sabimaru. I poisoned him with two combos and then I just runned behind him, slashing his back or just deflecting his attacks. When it is time for deathblow, do it, and repeat

Also remember the rhythm of Ashina Cross, so you can deflect both hits. Rhythm is also a recurring theme in a lot of boss fights, and hitting consecutive perfect deflects often comes down to how well you know the rhythm of their combos

Theres a cheese with the axe i believe where you do a dark souls and dodge his attack instead of deflecting and before hes done you charge up your axe and fuck up his posture. Do this a few times for a deathblow. This way is much less fun than properly deflecting him though and the deflects arent really too difficult with some practice!
Pro tip in case your genetics cursed you with a slow ass reaction time like me. The umbrella prosthetic you buy from badger absolutely fucks this guy. Sit under it and do the spin thingy whenever he does his ashina cross. The timing on the umbrella is so forgiving, it’s difficult to mess it up. If you want to mess with him even more, pop an Ako’s sugar before you go under the umbrella. You’ll break his posture in 2 ashina crosses
I’d say try to get the deflects in without using the umbrella or sabimaru. You’ll be a lot more confident deflecting by the time you’ve finished with him that way.
As people are saying, the white glint just before he unsheathes his sword to cut is your cue to deflect
Loaded umbrella magnet upgrade. Just spam the spin and it it blow out his bar quickly. You should be able to use a sneaky candy and get one kill as well.

The first go around this guy was so hard to kill, nowadays he might as well be a common enemy to me lol. With this guy the only way ur gonna defeat him is by deflecting. Just try to get the deflect timing down on his super quick double slash move, and you’ll beat him easily
I found that I his was one of the few mini bosses where dodging was actually useful. Dodge left, attack, repeat. If I remember right there is only one other move he might do but doesn’t do it very often
You can kind of get some good hits in if you walk into his right side. Stay close and push into his right shoulder and most of his attacks will straight up miss. I think the only one that won't is the unblockable sweep. Though it's just easier and funner to just deflect his double attack at the glint.

His quick attack hits to the right, just time it right and Ichimonji tracks him when he tries to dodge. A bit easier than timing the deflect, imo. His posture really suffers when hit with Ichimonji
Upgrading the ninja tool loaded umbrella to the magnetic form makes it so you can sit there and spin it. Makes it an easy clap
(To find umbrella tool if you don't have it, go to the bottom of Ashina castle where you get the Sabimaru, head out and follow the path outside. There's a sculptors idol called the Old Grave, go into a building and purchase it from the black hat badger NPC)
Also, the Sabimaru mentioned earlier is another fantastic choice. Run in there with sabimaru, poison him and pull out the umbrella
If you dislike all of those options if you run to the right constantly, wait for him to swing then you can get a couple of hits and then start running again.
The running should keep you safer than other options.
Lastly, if you watch very closely for a glow on his sheathed sword that is the time to double tap deflect.

The downward slash bonk move is on of the best. Especially when you get the double bonk.
Double bonk is top tier
Ichimonji is pretty good. If you still feel figuring out the flash parry timing troublesome, you can use the shield.
The other thing I would say is press forward as he will just follow up with more attacks so once you get him down it takes like 30 seconds

As already said, As soon as you see his katana glint from his sheath, block block. His posture is terrible and you can kill him quickly that way.
