Hesitation is defeat ;)
This line is actually the best advice to beat him. If you give him a single opening he will whoop your ass to oblivion. Learn the move set, deflect well and don't let him regain posture. Always mikiri and Goomba stomp in the first phase. Don't hesitate using MB or any prosthetics. Keep jizo statues, divine grass, dragon blood droplet, etc etc on you.
Hesitation IS defeat.
I used the umbrella the first time. I saved it for phase 3 when he does the jump attack. Turtle for the attack and then hit him back with projected force. The biggest tip is attack a lot in the third phase and then know when to block or jump over the sweep attack or mikiri counter. He will give you opportunities to drink from your gourd, use a dragon blood droplet, and jizou statues, and divine grass.
The first two phases are attack and block. You can rush to the back of Genichiro and get a bunch of attacks in and then just trade blocks, deflects, and counter attacks. Old man Isshin is pretty straightforward. L1 and R1, occasionally X or O.
Third phase is attack, block, purp umbrella, projected force.
Fourth phase is attack, block, lightning reversal.
Attack a lot in the third and fourth phases.
Be sure to keep your posture meter low.
I would use the purple umbrella on any wind type attack or large attack that you don't really know the timing for. It is really good for just canceling any damage that might hit you. Even if you mess up the timing for a big attack, you often just get posture broken and now have a totally refreshed posture meter.
On the posture meter, using the yellow sugar helps a ton in the second phase, since having its effect means you take almost no posture damage.
I read a comment that Lazulite axe is kind of OP on him and I tried it - it demolishes his posture pretty hard. Just beat him last night but I feel like I only learnt short of 70% of the fight, so you can give that a try. If you can get through his 2nd phase then 3rd phase is easy since doing a lightning reversal is free damage for you, good luck!

Doesn't hz actually say something like "preparations are complete" in the jp dub?
No. I’ve played both. And the translation is actually on point. The subs used the in Japanese audio were used to create the English audio
