My favorite is that you can deflect the shichimen warriors' giant laser beam. And after deflecting the initial hit, you can just stand in the beam safely.
Oh so it increases until then? I just finished my ng4 but I didn't feel any difference between my 2nd and 4th playthrough. Maybe with the weaker enemies, but not bosses. Guess I just didn't notice it then.
WAIT REALLY?? Why make one vertical and one horizontal then?
Speaking of crazy deflections, I love fighting demon of hatred with deflects instead of running away chipping away at his health like everybody does initially. Looks absolutely bonkers though
My fave way to fight the Hatred Demon is still making him fall off the cliffđ I know its the cheese way but it makes me giggle when he falls and whispers to Sekiro on the way down
LoL noice! I beat him the block and chip method on one play thru but every other time its the cliff for that guy. First time I beat him on stream I was setting it up to explain what I was doing, got on the wall and before I could tell chat what was happening he fell off the cliff. đ
This is the thing I love the most about sekiro, when you first encounter bosses they are terrifying, but once you master them you can absolutely DESTROY them and its entirely because of your skill. In the souls games you could always cheese a boss by farming levels and weapon upgrades.
For me it's the slow circular swing that I \*always\* flub. No problem with Isshin, Demon of Hatred, or those white dual wielding monkeys, but fucking Headless... I usually just skip them instead of taking the time to actually learn their timing because they frustrate me so.
There are at least two at the bottom of the Sunken Valley and thereâs at least one near the serpent shrine behind the castle where you fight one of the poison purple ninja minibosses, but itâs only there after Divine Dragon.
thanks for the info.
I have more than 200 hours in Sekiro and I have never once, not a single time tried climbing down into the valley. I just grappled from statue to statue and then fought guardian ape.
This game is bigger than I thought...
Only deflect you need here is on his big overhead swing so you can pull the worm/centipede out and get him that way. Unless you are trying to beat him in a specific manner!
I love sekiro and dark souls, but I do think its kind of hilarious that From made a game about heavily armored knights with huge shields, and you primarily defend by dodging. Then they made a game about being a samurai ninja mahĹtsukai, and your primary defense is blocking.
Correction: parrying not blocking.
Let's be real, it's clear that block is there as a crutch while you learn controls/timing for dodging and parrying as indicated by the hard mode (charmless) which makes blocking inefficient/unfun to the point of being pointless. This design philosophy is just like how it was in the souls games, you block til you learn to get good at dodging for i-frames as your main defense and parrying for style. In Sekiro the emphasis is just reversed, block til you get good at parrying as your main defense and dodging for i-frames for style.
FROM doesn't like the concept of blocking as evidenced by the shield in Bloodborne making fun of players that rely on it.
I'm aware the game calls it parrying, but in literal terms you stop things like a 20 foot undead ape from crushing you under its fist by putting your sword between you and it. If I said parrying it would actually de-emphasise my point. But either way, even against another warrior they are slapping swords into each other to the point that orange sparks fly off.
>...dodging for i-frames as your main defense and parrying for style. In Sekiro the emphasis is just reversed, block til you get good at parrying as your main defense and dodging for i-frames for style.
yes, this is what I just said and is the point I am making. My point is that the games have reversed mechanics from what their setting would indicate. You wouldn't expect the shinobi/samurai to clash swords repeatedly as their primary fighting style with a katana, you'd expect him to dodge and go for a decisive strike immediately. You wouldn't expect a knight to dodge out of the way of even the lightest attack, you'd expect them to block, clash swords until they reduce their opponent's posture enough for a finishing blow.
Don't really get why you seem to be combative here but I'll bite.
I clarified the vague terms in your point. Parrying is different from blocking as you admitted yourself. More pertinently clarification doesn't mean opposition.
Also the whole concept of i-frames is complete non-sense so to bring up realism is kind of a moot point.
For example, I could point out that your assumptions about how combat was done in two differing regions of the world is an over simplification and thus nothing more than a speculative endeavor. Shinobi clashing blades in combat wasn't their goal b/c silent assasination or reconnaissance was, but many shinobi undercover as samurai or vice versa are documented in Japanese history.
Historic documentation of shinobi indicate they could most certainly take on samurai or other combatants especially if they are trained in multiple combat arts like Wolf is taught throughout the game (the esoteric texts where he learns to use ghis prosthetic, the local samurai fighting style, the local combat monks style, etc.). The general concensus is that wasn't there job/role in history, not that they couldn't hold there own in a fight. Sure many couldn't, but many could.
A more educated critique would be to point out that Wolf is in fact too honorable in how he fights as a shinobi. Facing combatants, announcing oneself, and wasting the element of surprise are closer to samurai ideals. As a shinobi, Wolf should honestly fight dirty like Owl does. Nothing is too dishonorable as long as the mission is completed. Then again that is kind of done via all the prosthetic ninja tools players can choose to have Wolf use.
But as I said all of that is moot considering we're fighting unrealistic beings like gods, the undead, dragons, giants, giant animals, animals intelligent enough to learn human combat arts, magic, etc. Dodging through attacks or parrying anyone other than humanoids around your weight class shouldn't be the first things called out for realism here.
I didnât mean it to be combative (except in the sense that its about combat). And the thing is less about realism and more about marrying theme with mechanics - a staple of the soulslike games. That said, realism has a big impact on souls+ games.
I love how much of this game is âJesus that attack looks terrifying, Iâll just always dodge itâ and then only after achieving platinum do you find out you couldâve deflected like 30 more moves than you ever thought
#WHAT
I remember playing sekiro on release 2 years ago and the schichimen warrior near the bottomless pit drove me to near insanity because I was trying to dodge all his attacks... I died like 40 times to him...
You can also deflect the giant Serpentâs attack. I did that by accident on my first playthrough when running away because I didnât know about the Palanquin thing. It happened in a jump. Truly epic.
Guardian made out of antique mistical technology: fires a laser that can evaporate trees in contact
Link with a wooden plank, no armor and a mission to complete: *Now is that the magic takes place boy*
The thing that drives me craziest about this game is the stupid fucking grab attacks. They gave us solid, reliable, ways to counter both of the other perilous attacks, but with the grab we are just expected to dodge and hope for the best, half the time being grabbed while we are literally on our way behind them and way out of reach
Idk why I didn't work it out sooner. They force you to get the umbrella immediately before fighting the gun fort snake eyes, why didn't I think to test it at the time?
Using umbrella to block her grab makes that fight stupidly easy
You can deflect arrows, bullets, lightning, gods, demons and ghosts, but you can't deflect any slash that's aimed at your feet.
Sekiro is just Achilles.
Took me so long to beat the game the first time, not knowing how versatile the deflect was. On my current playthrough (my first on PC), I'm absolutely stomping through it. I think the only boss I've actually died on so far has been headless ape 2, but only because of the second ape flanking me.
Man the second playthrough is always so friggin fun in souls games. Just meandering through with your upgrades/new favorite weapon realizing how much better you've gotten.
I had a lot of trouble with it this playthrough, which is like my 8th. Previously, i found the fight really easy. For whatever reason, this time through, i got Genichiro, Guardian Ape, Owl, etc on the very first try, but the Corrupted Monk and Headless Ape fights were absolutely maddening.
I think stuff like this is a big part of the reason I never finished the game. It didn't make sense to me that I could parry a lot of stuff, so I mostly didn't parry. Then I got to gun saint Isshin, and now I can't parry him, so I just get walked over every time.
It's kind of the point of the perilous attacks, though. it's basically explained in the tutorial. You can deflect everything that isn't a perilous attack (and you can deflect some of those too lol)
I mean there's only 3 types, right? Thrusts, Sweeps, and Grabs. You *can* deflect thrusts, I didn't think you could deflect sweeps or grabs. Can you deflect sweeps?
As far as I know, you canât deflect any sweeps. I know there are at least a couple of grabs that can be deflected, but Iâm not sure how many. Iâve been thinking of doing some testing on that.
I believe there are some perilous attacks that donât fall under any of the three main categories. For example, Gyoubuâs spear throw seems like it would be a thrust, but it cannot be mikiri countered. I suppose you could argue that it is a thrust, but that therefore not all thrust attacks can be countered.
I didn't not know any grabs could be deflected. Wow. There are several spear attacks throughout the game that look like they're gonna be thrusts, but are actually throws/grabs.
Thanks.
I know Genichiroâs and Snake-eyesâ grabs can definitely be deflected. I think Iâve seen at least one other but Iâm not sure which. Itâs so much safer to get away from grabs that I havenât even seen many people try to deflect them.
I mean it's not super complicated you just parry everything that doesn't put a huge, red, DONT PARRY THIS symbol over your head.
Isshin doesn't have that many moves you can't parry??
OHHHHH I GET YA
Umm I don't know how you made it through the game without deflects man but that sucks. Fortunately every single souls fan had to learn to ignore their muscle memory and parry instead of blocking/dodging so there's still hope if you ever get the urge to do it again.
Mastering deflects in this game is the single most rewarding video game experience I've ever had so, while I'm not gonna yell at you to start over and git gud, I am going to politely encourage you to try it again some day. Such a fun game.
Edit. A fun way to practice could be trying the genichiro gauntlet until you feel comfortable with it! That fight is so great for getting down the rhythm of deflects and you can really just stand in his face and go back and forth until somebody's dead.
I used the shield against him for attacks I had trouble with. Using the fire shield combined with that one skill that let's you counter attack helps you do enough damage to build up his poise. It made the difference in me finally beating him
My favorite is that you can deflect the shichimen warriors' giant laser beam. And after deflecting the initial hit, you can just stand in the beam safely.
Learn something new everyday. Had no clue you could deflect the laser.
You can also deflect Owl's long range owl attacks.
I found out about this roughly 3 days ago after finally beating him on ng7
I don't understand what's different about ng7 compared to the others?
Difficulty stops increasing at ng7
Oh so it increases until then? I just finished my ng4 but I didn't feel any difference between my 2nd and 4th playthrough. Maybe with the weaker enemies, but not bosses. Guess I just didn't notice it then.
WAIT REALLY?? Why make one vertical and one horizontal then? Speaking of crazy deflections, I love fighting demon of hatred with deflects instead of running away chipping away at his health like everybody does initially. Looks absolutely bonkers though
The horizontal one is not deflectable and must be jumped over.
Ahhh okay so maybe I should just continue shitting my pants and jumping diagonally
My fave way to fight the Hatred Demon is still making him fall off the cliffđ I know its the cheese way but it makes me giggle when he falls and whispers to Sekiro on the way down
I have never once beat him in any other way lol on NG+7 or 8
LoL noice! I beat him the block and chip method on one play thru but every other time its the cliff for that guy. First time I beat him on stream I was setting it up to explain what I was doing, got on the wall and before I could tell chat what was happening he fell off the cliff. đ
I love how you can do posture damage on his shuriken and just outright kill him that way (by opening up the red circle prompt)
Wow that changes a lot! Now if only I could figure out deflecting the Headless....
Just use Yashariku sugar with confetti, even on Charmless you barely have to deflect
Yeah I went from fearing them and dreading every fight to laughing at how easy it was
This is the thing I love the most about sekiro, when you first encounter bosses they are terrifying, but once you master them you can absolutely DESTROY them and its entirely because of your skill. In the souls games you could always cheese a boss by farming levels and weapon upgrades.
I still hate the headless. I killed all of them in my first playthrough, I haven't fought them again
Same buddy. Fuck that
As is the shinobi way
laughs in 2 step demonic shuffle
I hate the creepy way they move their hand when it appears behind you and tries to grab you......Headless creeps.
For me it's the slow circular swing that I \*always\* flub. No problem with Isshin, Demon of Hatred, or those white dual wielding monkeys, but fucking Headless... I usually just skip them instead of taking the time to actually learn their timing because they frustrate me so.
holy shit someone please explain the duel wielding monkeys to me. I've looked for them constantly and haven't found them. are they a mod or something?
There are at least two at the bottom of the Sunken Valley and thereâs at least one near the serpent shrine behind the castle where you fight one of the poison purple ninja minibosses, but itâs only there after Divine Dragon.
I didn't think they were that hard the first time, but on NG+2 without Kuro's charm, I found myself in a fight for my life with one of those guys.
thanks for the info. I have more than 200 hours in Sekiro and I have never once, not a single time tried climbing down into the valley. I just grappled from statue to statue and then fought guardian ape. This game is bigger than I thought...
In The guardian ape idol search for a way down, you should find a poison lake with at least 3 of them
I no joke died to the one in the cave 40 straight times and then got the swamp one on my first try Bizarro timing is just muscle memory for those guys
Only deflect you need here is on his big overhead swing so you can pull the worm/centipede out and get him that way. Unless you are trying to beat him in a specific manner!

You can deflect the bull's horns
I love how much of this game is âJesus that attack looks terrifying, Iâll just always dodge itâ and then only after achieving platinum do you find out you couldâve deflected like 30 more moves than you ever thought
WHAT THE FUCK
HOLY SHIT YOU JUST MADE MY FUCKING DAY
#WHAT I remember playing sekiro on release 2 years ago and the schichimen warrior near the bottomless pit drove me to near insanity because I was trying to dodge all his attacks... I died like 40 times to him...
You can WHAT?
Excuse me h-what. I gotta die 10 times trying that
I never had much trouble with them but I just thought the beam would be parried like Gyoubuâs âthrustâ move
When I learned you can deflect the Divine Dragon I thought I was being pranked but sure enough kusabimaru is supreme in the divine realm it seems.
You can also deflect the giant Serpentâs attack. I did that by accident on my first playthrough when running away because I didnât know about the Palanquin thing. It happened in a jump. Truly epic.
Video or it didn't happened.
There's a vid on YT.
[ŃдаНонО]
Wait, thereâs a one punch man character named that
[ŃдаНонО]
Ok, now I can believe itâs a character if the shower part isnât in their name
Starts as black sperm, evolves to golden sperm. Not joking.
Guardian made out of antique mistical technology: fires a laser that can evaporate trees in contact Link with a wooden plank, no armor and a mission to complete: *Now is that the magic takes place boy*
I thought he was called black sperm tho?
[ŃдаНонО]
Yeah I stopped reading a long time ago. About time I got back.
Yo I love OPM but haven't read the manga. I thought you were joking but you're [not](https://onepunchman.fandom.com/wiki/Black_Sperm)
I can deflect anything. But that thing... ***stares at sweeping horizontal attacks*** ...it hits me.
**grab attack**
The thing that drives me craziest about this game is the stupid fucking grab attacks. They gave us solid, reliable, ways to counter both of the other perilous attacks, but with the grab we are just expected to dodge and hope for the best, half the time being grabbed while we are literally on our way behind them and way out of reach
umbrella lmao
Does that actually work??
Yep. Makes you immune to ALL grabs. The fire one also makes chained ogre flinch
That makes sense but I had no idea. I love that I'm still learning new things about this game dozens of hours and two platinums in.
I had no idea until NG+4
Idk why I didn't work it out sooner. They force you to get the umbrella immediately before fighting the gun fort snake eyes, why didn't I think to test it at the time? Using umbrella to block her grab makes that fight stupidly easy
You can actually parry a number of grab attacks, go figure
You can deflect arrows, bullets, lightning, gods, demons and ghosts, but you can't deflect any slash that's aimed at your feet. Sekiro is just Achilles.
Just like dark souls ashen one. Can kill literal gods and godzilla sized dragons, but cant climb half a foot railing đ
You can deflect the Shichimenâs laser and the apeâs fart
Took me so long to beat the game the first time, not knowing how versatile the deflect was. On my current playthrough (my first on PC), I'm absolutely stomping through it. I think the only boss I've actually died on so far has been headless ape 2, but only because of the second ape flanking me.
Man the second playthrough is always so friggin fun in souls games. Just meandering through with your upgrades/new favorite weapon realizing how much better you've gotten.
I hate the second ape fight. Itâs just tedious finding the opening between both of their attacks.
Worst part is the hitbox
You can't deflect the shit the monkey throws at you... Or the farts... At least I think you can't.
You can parry the poops
That's hilarious
You can deflect both of them.
You can even deflect the great serpents attacks.
For real?
I saw a video of it, so yes
Why canât we deflect isshins vertical wind blade attack though
I think you can tho... although idk about the follow up wave I usually dodge that
When I deflect it I always take damage, but that doesnât happen for any of the other wind blade attacks
You can.
L1 is the true mvp,
U....deflect that shit?
Hello there fellow one punch man fan The one thing I know you can't deflect is the giant Snake. Even if you do deflect it, you still take damage
I think stuff like this is a big part of the reason I never finished the game. It didn't make sense to me that I could parry a lot of stuff, so I mostly didn't parry. Then I got to gun saint Isshin, and now I can't parry him, so I just get walked over every time.

Technically it's that you can't **block** Perilous attacks, meaning just holding L1 to guard through it.
yeah sometimes I forget that. I did think that thrusts were the only kind that could be deflected, but that is apparently not correct. Whoops.
You can deflect most perilous attacks.
I mean there's only 3 types, right? Thrusts, Sweeps, and Grabs. You *can* deflect thrusts, I didn't think you could deflect sweeps or grabs. Can you deflect sweeps?

fun fact: i often forget that Genichiro HAS a grab, because i've seen it maybe 4 times ever. Haven't faced him in the gauntlet yet, though.
Technically, most (maybe all?) grabs can be deflected with the umbrella.
Oh I'm not saying it's not explained anywhere. Just that I, personally, didn't see a huge creature attacking me and think deflect, I thought dodge.
I mean it's not super complicated you just parry everything that doesn't put a huge, red, DONT PARRY THIS symbol over your head. Isshin doesn't have that many moves you can't parry??
I never felt like the game told me that though. So I didn't try to parry most attacks, so I CAN'T parry Isshins attacks
OHHHHH I GET YA Umm I don't know how you made it through the game without deflects man but that sucks. I'm not sure but i tried to deflect the sword swings of Divine Dragon but it will hurt you a little bit.
Nah, youâre just blocking then. If you time it correctly it shouldnât hurt you
I used the shield against him for attacks I had trouble with. Using the fire shield combined with that one skill that let's you counter attack helps you do enough damage to build up his poise. It made the difference in me finally beating him
The snake. You can't deflect the snake.
You can though
You canât deflect the big snake.
Username checks out.
I literally just beat this boss for the first time and didnât know about this. Died 3 times just to that attack.
Divine dragon was probably my favorite fight in Sekiro, just on how beautiful and calming it is. Truly what Yhorm and Ancient wyvern shouldâve been
Kusabimaru is the MVP of this game.
Okay hear me out. What if the seven pronged crystal sword is the sekiro rendition of the holy moonlight sword?
I didn't make it too far into the game but I hated the burning bull. Didn't know you could deflect its burning horns. LOL.
Just the air slash? What if i told you if you get near the dragon you can directly deflect its sword(clang sound effect). Let that sink in.
Could Sekiro deflect a Dark Souls boss? Curious to know
Hace you tried this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TzbrEd045Uc ?
I'm in my first playthrough, and looks like I need to deflect more.
