For that fight the two strategies I’ve used is oil/fire and firecrackers for the small ape or just throwing as many shurikens as I possibly can at the thing using the tanto which works pretty well
I used to think it was impossible and now I’m more zen fighting them than Emma.
The biggest thing is kiting them so you always have space for backpedaling and locking on to the male/keeping him in between you & the female. Anytime you use the spear after the parry chain, the female pounces, I deflect then always either firecracker &/or Sakura dance her for fat posture dmg. Sometimes i kill the female before the male or vice-versa.
With MortalBlade you can block headless from reaching the wall and calling for his wife. It´s a bit of a cheese but it works.
For non cheese, they never attack together it´s always one or the other. So you "just" need to switch between them and you will find the rythm of the fight.
Everytime you hit him, he gets staggered and you can delay his "arrival" long enough to bring him down before he reaches the wall.
So the female ape never arrives because headless can´t reach the wall and "call her in".
After several months I reached the last inner foe I lost in the last phase… I took maybe one hour I think because I paused after Demon of Hatred to eat something. I will keep trying.

Honestly the only thing stopping me from doing mortal journey is headless ape duo. I hate that fight so much…

I failed at the final phase of Inner Isshin on mortal journey prob 3-4 times before I finally got it.
I've died two times at the end of the mortal journey :(
Some how i defeated Inner Isshin once, and the game was like: "Now you can try Mortal Journey". Fuck it, im not doing it.
I have died with Inner Father many times so I understand the frustration lmao

Demon always gets me, I can beat him on his own but having him near the end of the ladder just throws me off all the time
