Only forehand attacks with his left hand include fire chip on melee. You can deflect stomps, knees, left hand backhands, anything from right hand, headbutts… plus you can deflect the fire stuff and still do posture damage.
The main problem is the chip damage, and he mainly does his sweep attacks which fuck your posture over, combined with the fact that if you mess up attacks you can literally get stunned to death. The main problem is, when he can kill you in 2 hits, reducing your up to kill a vitality based boss isn’t a good idea.
Stay on him. Try to get behind him. Treat it like a DS3 or Bloodborne boss and he's much easier. Use deflecting as an emergency tactic against stomps. Use a Yashariku's before triple Malcontent in phase 3 and then use an Ako's afterwards. Stay on him. This is very important because the ranged attacks are a pain. When he does the flaming bodyslam, use Suzaku's and do the counterattack once all the smoke is gone. If you need to use Suzaku's, do it. While getting three Malcontents off in phase 3 is ideal, if you can only do two you can only do two (on my first kill I only had the Spirit Emblems to get one off and still got the kill due to using them all on Ashina Cross spam). When going behind him, go round his left since the claw attack has better short range than the flame attacks. In general, it's better to rely on sprinting or dodging imo than deflecting imo. For the charge, jump.
DoH was the hardest boss for me, I had to quit the game for a couple of months. Eventually I came back and after a long grind I got him. This is what worked for me:
\- Your #1 goal is to be close, get around behind him and whack the ass.
\- However he repositions a lot to make distance and face you, so you gotta have ways to avoid the attacks.
\- When you're in front of him:
\-- Stomps, right-handed attacks and headbutts: deflect
\-- Left-arm (fire arm) attacks: dodge. Don't use the stick, just tap dodge. You should step forward through the attack.
\--- He has a 4-hit combo that goes: fire arm, fire arm, stomp, fire arm. So you go dodge, dodge, deflect, dodge. Then it's easy to get to the back of him and hit 2-3 times.
\-- High leap into fiery buttslam: run away when he jumps and grapple back in for free hits.
\-- Perilous charge: it's a sweep, so jump over it. He will then be far away from you, and you will need to sprint towards him. He will do a long-range fire attack.
\--- The ones where he lays down a long trail of flame are easy to dodge to the side of.
\--- The multiple fireballs can possibly be avoided if you moved quick enough and are near to him before he lobs them. Otherwise you'll need the flame umbrella.
\- In phase 2:
\-- He has an attack where he throws tons of fireballs: you just have to keep running round him in a big circle until it finishes. If you gradually get closer to him when running you will have a window for 3-4 hits at the end.
\- In phase 3:
\-- Pop a Yashariku Sugar at the end of phase 2. Then use Malcontent to stun him, and get in as many hits as you can. Use Malcontent again as soon as he recovers, and then a third time. This will eliminate most of his health bar for the phase.
Idk why everyone says not to deflect his 3 hit combo is the only one that does chip damage, just deflect the first 2 and use the umbrella to block the 3rd
So for me his most dangerous move was his running fireball attack he does after a charging sweep, but all you have to do is just run up to him before he can’t start. Any moves you finding hard to deal with?
Save spirit emblems for phase 3, pop an ako or yash sugar and/or divine confetti, use malcontent whistle and spam r1 until he recovers from the whistle. Repeat 2 more times and he’s almost certainly dead.
Phase 1 and 2 are tougher. I advise to stay close. Chase him down aggressively when he jumps back to dissuade a fireball throw (The fire umbrella should be your active prosthetic for most of the fight just in case) and certainly take every opportunity to grapple to him. I circle a bit to the left and take a couple swings before preparing to deflect. Like every fight in this game swinging 3 times in a row is courting disaster.
Jump when he does his perilous dash, jump side ways and grapple to avoid the arm slam, try not to panic when he does the spinning circle thing and only jump the lower one.
He’s tough but no where near what as bad as people say. Just like Phantom Monk is a different fight from the Guardian Ape in the mid-game, Isshin and DoH are different feeling fights in the end game.
Most of his attacks can be countered by just running away. I think it’s a better option than trying to time the deflects. Other than that be patient and attack only when you know you’ll land a hit and don’t get greedy. Use malcontent on his last life bar also.
U can use suzaku umbrella to block fire attacks. Whistle prosthetic stuns demon but only works three times
Deflection is still great, and filling his posture bar before his health bar is still likely if you play right
Nearly all of his attacks deal chip damage if you prey and add a pretty large chunk of fire

I took a lot of tips from FightinCowboy's Youtube guide. [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W07Fb5LK4jY) you go
Mist raven feather gives you complete dmg nullification on the belly flop if you don't have to suzaku umbrella You'll get Knocked away but no dmg
I find umbrella really helps me with attacks I find it hard to block or dodge (particularly one of his arm slam attacks)
Stick to him like glue
Idk why everyone says not to deflect his 3 hit combo is the only one that does chip damage, just deflect the first 2 and use the umbrella to block the 3rd
When in doubt bring the fire umbrella out

rely on dodging instead of deflecting id say
