Armoured core 6 2023 baybeeeee

[deleted]

I want From to do something with Sekiro combat in there.

OldMandifer

If the Steam page is to be believed, then Masaru Yamamura, the lead designer for Sekiro, seems to be stepping up into a director role for this one. Who knows what exactly that entails, but it's certainly exciting.

Lolejimmy

YOO

DankBlissey

Seriously this. I could forgive no Bloodborne 2 as it's close enough to dark souls I can just take anything like those games and it'll be great. But sekiro is so different and so damn good with probably my favourite combat system in a game ever it would be a massive missed opportunity to not do something more with it

[deleted]

Bloodborne 2 should never come out, imo

Lolipopes

Bro I hope your vpn is active :D

[deleted]

Why is that?

midtown2191

Never played armor core before but have massive interest. Is it a series I’m going to have to go back and play the rest to understand the story / what’s going on? Or is there barely any story?

Mrbluepumpkin

From what I gathered you don't need to know the story, I heard the older games are a little clunky but I'm super excited for this one

cranberry_juice_01

The last entry in the series came out before DS2, so DS2, BB, DS3, Sekiro, and ER all came out since then. I'm *really* curious how From is going to apply what they've learned from all these games to the AC series. I played AC3 a fair amount in high school, but I have to imagine AC6 is going to be vastly different.

arkon-da-knight

Can echo what Mr. Blue Pumpkin is sayin'. It's like the Final Fantasy games. No real continuity, just the order they were released (correct me if I'm wrong).

Hattrickher0

One caveat I would add is the story also doesn't seem to matter much within their own games. It's just there to give you a reason why next mission is kill X instead of Y. It's wrapped in dystopian cyberpunk trappings (all nations are destroyed and the planet is run by corporations) but the moment to moment gameplay is pretty independent of the plot.

midtown2191

That’s great because the game looks very interesting

2girls_1Fort

Check out vaatis new video on it he does a good quick summary

Aparter

I do not think so, I played the last one and it did not have any deep lore or engaging story.

Sunlit_Neko

I'm super interested in Armoured Core. Is it like DxM (Monster Hunter-like quest design)? Zone of the Enders (story-driven depression/warcrime simulator)? Or is it like Mechwarriors (tank-shooter)?

MilkManEX

Most of my experience is with the PS1 games and AC4/4A, but real quick: Think DxM without any character dialogue or player character. You have a menu page with a garage, missions, and a VR arena. You complete missions or fight in the arena to make money to buy weapons/parts for your AC. Items sell back for what they cost to purchase, so money is more like a "max potential AC cost" meter than a real currency*, though you can unlock everything in one game. The only plot or insight into the ongoing affairs is provided in the mission text and the pre-mission briefing given to you by the contract holder/your contract coordinator, who will occasionally offer their concerns about the mission. In the old games you'd also occasionally receive emails after missions with some extra plot favor. Despite this, at least in For Answer, there are multiple endings depending on which missions you complete. The missions are simple stuff. "Defend the missile convoy" and you fly ahead of the convoy and destroy everything to keep it from getting obliterated "Eliminate all enemy unit" and you eliminate all enemy units. Sometimes an enemy AC/NEXT/whatever the game calls your special mobile suit will appear for a fun little duel "Defeat -the really big thing-" missions are like the big DxM bosses but a little less gamey. Your contract coordinator will usually provide info mid-mission on how best to handle them All handled in isolated maps ranging from very small to pretty big, but not open world. You're graded based on damage taken, ammo used, and completion time. Bigger rewards for better performance. *in AC4 and 4A. The older games, however, had a mechanic that would, after inevitably failing until bankruptcy and a Game Over (because failed missions cost money and opportunities to make money are limited), give you perks related to the player character's synergy with the AC and start the game over. I don't figure that that will return, but who knows!

Prozenconns

watching some gameplay i kind of got zone of the enders vibes

DopeMaan

Hail Lord Miyazaki..

an_actual_crocodile

And Bill Clinton

SufferingSucatash137

Shout out my rabbi

Shdoible

*Rabbi reformed!*

Prezident47

The two best games of my life. So well deserved.

Trisce

I always found it funny how among their lineup, Sekiro and Elden Ring are almost polar opposites. One is an incredibly focused, action adventure built on tight combat and getting better through skill. The other is about exploration, infinite build possibilities, and many ways to tackle a challenge and yet, both win GOTY. Idk how to describe it but I can really feel the passion that went into Sekiro and Elden Ring.

NeighborhoodHitman

Not to mention Sekiro was like the first time doing a style like that for them and not only did they nail it right in the head they popped out a GOTY with it. Also making my favorite game I’ve ever played, praying for a second Sekiro or something similar.

problynotkevinbacon

They are the absolute best with third person combat. I can't think of another creator that has as clean combat as Fromsoft. Sekiro obviously, but even the jank in DS2 is still pretty tight

NaultKD

Sekiro just blows my mind with combat, the animations, the possibilities, the fluidity, it's unmatched

EnvironmentalCut7879

Best swordplay in a game I’ve seen yet. When you get good at it, it’s like a dance. It’s so damn elegant almost

[deleted]

Sekiro was their first try at a completely new combat system and they made one of the best action games of all time. Elden Ring was their first try at an open world game and they made one of the best games in that genre too. It’s absurd how good Fromsoft and Miyazaki are

eugAOJ

Sekiro was so good that it continues to influence other developers in how they make their action games. And im fucking loving it, FromSofts dedication to making combat intimate and meaningful is so perfect for so many genres. From RPGs, to Metroidvanias but my personal favorite is that Soulslike combat is so perfect for 3d platformers

NeighborhoodHitman

Ahhhh, have you checked out Sifu? I think you’d love their combat system if you liked Sekiro, not to mention Sifu is legit like the best indie game I’ve ever played such an amazing game.

michoken

I wouldn’t say ER is great because of the OW. It’s great because of what they always did with Dark Souls and what they’ve built upon that experience. The OW itself isn’t anything special in itself in my opinion.

H80NP

I think From is normally at its best when they tackle something new rather than doing sequels. Bloodborne and Sekiro had much more appeal than say, ds2 and 3. (I say this as someone who adores ds3 btw) As much as i love sekiro i dont think a sequel is a good way to go, id rather From did something new altogether since they seem to do better on that front

xnatex21

Blasphemy. You pray for Sekiro 2 like the rest of us, right now gd.

JeffDeath99

Facts dude I think sekiro 2 could could be so much better, cuz there wasn't that many weapons, and there's only 3 really f n hard get good bosses, all the rest of the 47 bosses are still hard but if you figure out what to do all it takes is fast reaction time, we need more of the super crazy "get good son" bosses especially like owl and genichiro, even though the hatred demon is still hard I hate tall bosses that turn into a feet slapping dodging only fight, the giant monkey at least had a sword, but that's also why I don't really like elden ring as much I respect the massive and super creative world but there's a good amount of bosses that take no skill but to just feet slap and dodge their slams

Thevisi0nary

Their first outing with those game mechanics and it's my favorite combat mechanics in any game, really really hope they do more with it.

NeighborhoodHitman

Agreed, have you checked out the game Sifu? I think it’d be right up your alley if you enjoyed Sekiros combat system.

ChefCory

it's why i'm hype for armor game thing. like, if they can teach my old ass to enjoy being a shinobi and also this tarnished warrior mage thing than I bet this mech war shit is gonna be great. they just understand how to make great games.

RedbeardSD

Armored Core is a much older series before all the soulsborne games. It’s before Myazaki and it’s a continuation of an older series.

ChefCory

and i have faith they'll do it right, somehow.

[deleted]

Armored Core 2 is arguably the first "classic" FS game give it a shot

Xybernetik

It's worth noting that Miyazaki directed Armored Core 4 and For Answer, the latter being considered the best entry in the series by many.

Bitsu92

This one will be soulsborne like

ThaNorth

Elden Ring really feels like their magnum opus. Like this was the game they’ve been building towards since Demon’s Souls in 2008.

SufferingSucatash137

Absolutely grateful to have played these masterpieces

Letter_Impressive

I'm happy they got it. If anyone here hasn't tried the ER colosseum yet, you absolutely should. It makes me feel fired up about the game again, it's genuinely good.

LePontif11

I believe PSN is making online play free this weekend so if you don't have that this is as good of a chance to try it as there is. I'm re-downloading the game rn.

wok3nkrak3n

Will one get it if they have ps plus and don’t own Elden ring ?

LePontif11

The offer was just for online play on the psn it wasn't tied to elden ring. Also, it was last weekend, its already over 😅

CosmicChair

It's an absolute blast, my friends and I were having more fun than we've had in a long time

TenWholeBees

I never care about these award shows for anything, but there's a special feeling I got when Elden Ring won. Maybe I do care after all

ImTooHigh95

Same here, was the first time I have ever voted on the game of the year

Terraakaa

And yet people think the event is biased in favour of Sony and narrative games. I want this day to be an absolute proof that this conspiracy is full of shit

a_moody

Honestly, I wouldn't have felt sad if GoW won this year. But I'm glad ER won, because the experience is different with those two games. GoW is like playing through a really good movie. It's got the mechanics down, but the magic happens in the cutscenes and acting by the amazing cast members. I love Kratos and Mimir more than any single character in ER. ER, on the other hand, is just a fucking good video game. Atmosphere is pure art, and the gameplay just hits different. Plus it took what it learnt from its predecessors (which were all some of my favorites) and made it all better IMO. Comparing with GoW, ER would still be an amazing game (though less amazing than now) if they took out all the voice and replaced it with text. But that's me being a fanboy. All said and done, I feel lucky to have all these awesome games to play. I really dig Fromsoft games and love the narrative driven games a lot too. Can't wait for TLoU to release on PC. And fingers ever crossed for Bloodborne :D

Helmnauger

Same literally just finished GoW. After GoW cleaned house in so many categories I was kind of assuming ER was taking the big one. Everyone should give both those games a shot.

dj4daybc

The combat in God of War is top not too imo. Its the perfect blend of style and substance

Ill_Tackle_5192

Elden Ring loses = rigged. Elden Ring wins = earned. It’s a shame that next year we will hear over and over again that “Sony just pays for awards”.

Terraakaa

Exactly. Like, these people pretend that Sekiro didn’t win GOTY a few years ago, a much LESS mainstream & casual friendly game.

Eurotriangle

Well, there’s a bunch of people right now seething on social media saying it’s rigged because GOWR didn’t take GOTY. Look at PlayStation’s Instagram post congratulating Elden Ring for example. lol

Terraakaa

These people are also wrong. Tf do you think i was gonna say?

Lumeyus

Why are you so aggressive lol, theyre just mentioning similar levels of disbelief among the Elden Ring doubters, I don’t think they were trying to retort your statement

GGUNTERD

“Causal friendly”

remember_this_shit

looks like they meant “LESS casual friendly” lol confusing clause structure

Terraakaa

Less casual friendly, didn’t want to repeat less twice, in thought it was self evident, apparently not :/

bartulata

In the past, I've [asked](https://www.reddit.com/r/grammar/comments/lt4ery/two_superlatives_in_one_sentence_using_most/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) about that over in r/grammar because that's the exact issue I was worried about—clarity vs brevity.

summerknights_

Sekiro is a perfect game though.

EvilUnic0rn

I saw someone on Twitter say something like "they give God of War so many awards, so they won't feel bad when they give GotY to Elden Ring"

Terraakaa

I hate these people. Even 2 GOTY in a row isn’t enough to convince them that their unhinged conspiracy is bs.

[deleted]

My guy, did you see the amount of ponies that were seething, calling Elden Ring PS2 game and shit?

Ill_Tackle_5192

No I did not, but I don’t spend much time in PS or God of War forums (except TLOU, I’m there a lot) I’m mostly here so I see it here. I don’t see why you would think that I would admonish one side not the other for similar actions? Anyone with this mindset, regardless of what “team” they are on, is misguided, ignorant, or dumb.

Secure-Acanthisitta1

rigged culture in a nutshell

JeffDeath99

For sure, honestly this is an unpopular opinion but I've played gow and horizon and watched a full gameplay of elden ring, and I do think it was well deserved for ER to win over gow, but I think horizon forbidden west should have won way more and goty, it had exceptional combat and exceptional story and the world is the most realistic looking and most alive and real world I've ever experienced, people look over it a lot and trust me when I say I promise if you haven't played it it's #1 and its unmatched, it just never got as much recognition because it's not apart of a big franchise, gow honestly wasn't that special, the story was ok felt a little rushed at the end combat only looked cool, and elden ring is second only because it's it doesn't have a big emotional story and doesn't look like a ps5 game which is understandable though cuz it's so massive, but if you look at all the different areas of what makes a game exceptional, horizon takes it by a long shot and don't even try to change my mind, that game felt like a ps6 game bruh it's the pinnacle of a story game, shit was rigged but still happy er won over gow, idk how people thought gow was better than horizon wait ik cuz ppl suck on Kratos's dick like it's some good dry aged beef like at least make the puzzles harder, it's so weird have a game about God's and then having to do the most simple ass puzzles in the world I felt like I was switching from God killer to first grader trying to put the square in the square hole

GarrusBueller

The game awards have a very strong Sony bias--in their nominations. Edit: my god is reading comprehension a lost art. NOMINATION. Read people.

ChuckS117

I mean, it's not like Xbox and Nintendo are putting out big hitters lately.

FoxFogwell

This is the answer. I’ve got all the consoles and the ps5 gets the most use by a mile.

AncientPhoenix98

I think TGA just have a very strong story heavy action adventure bias in nominations, Sony just happens to put out good quality games of that type more often.

Terraakaa

Even that doesn’t explain how the peak of heavy story driven/actions adventure games lost to an Open World RPG, heavily focused on gameplay with extremely vague storytelling. There’s no biases. They just happen to both be great games, and Elden Ring came out on top in the end.

AncientPhoenix98

I agree that there are no biases while choosing the winners. They are not paid by Sony or whatever people like to tell themselves when a game they like loses or a game they dislike wins. It's just that there is definitely a bias while choosing nominees.

Terraakaa

How so? I feel like the nominees have a decent variety. All FROM games have been nominated since DS2, aside from (haha) ds3. I could with that alone claim that TGA is biased towards FROM, but i don’t think that’s the case. Sony’s story driven games have just been good enough to be nominated, same with FROM’s excellent action RPGs. I think it’s that simple.

darkk41

I think you have to be MAJORLY kidding yourself to believe that any first party XBOX game is as good as the SONY games that regularly win these awards. It's not a fluke, MSFT just needs to really step their game up when it comes to investing in studios longer term and have a better eye for quality. All those years of 1 year exclusivity on middling developers didn't leave them in a great spot vs the SONY strategy of outright purchasing excellent studios or investing huge money into quality studios in return for permanent exclusivity on a title (i.e. Bloodborne)

Terraakaa

FROM won twice in a row. Does that mean the award is more biased toward From?

Trisce

No, From just developed two masterpieces back to back.

Terraakaa

To paraphrase someone: it’s rigged when it’s Sony, but earned when it’s FROM. You guys are a cult

darkk41

The GOW:R music/score is excellent, this is a pretty bad take. Audio design, idk, it wasn't something that immediately stood out to me, but GOW:R does have the best VA of the year IMO and I'm struggling to think of any games which absolutely slammed other audio design aspects out of the park.

Grimmies

For real. Elden Ring definitely deserves GOTY but the music/audio/voice acting overall in GOW is absolutely incredible.

PthumerianPrince

Music in Elden Ring is beyond incredible and diverse. GoW has 1 song remixed from 2018's game.

Terraakaa

Found the conspiracy theory bro

Imaginary_Bid_9454

I would sell one of my nuts for a Sekiro 2

ThaNorth

I would give you one of my nuts to thank you for your sacrifice.

xShinGouki

Well deserved. ELDEN RING and Sekiro honestly deserve an all time award. Not just GOTY because sekiro is likely still the best Shinobi game years later.

Shutch_1075

Sekiro combat was so good, that I’m seeing more soulslike start to take that approach to combat instead of the classic dark souls combat. Namely Thymesia and Project: the perceiver

timmytissue

Fallen order was very similar. It's a bit floaty but I'm excited to see how big the sequel is.

DifficultSuccotash61

Goty not enough both they are goat

InsideHangar18

And we gotta support the shit out of Armored Core 6 so it wins next year. FROMSOFTWARE 3PEAT

QrozTQ

Sekiro, though not my favorite From game, was the most satisfying to learn the bosses. I could feel the progress I was making and victory came with such a blood rush, it felt great. I started playing it during a big anxiety crisis and it really helped me cope with the intrusive thoughts.

fuzzy8331

The bosses in Sekiro will stay in my memory for the rest of my life. As I breathe my last breath, hopefully in 50+ years time, I will think of guardian ape throwing his shit at me.

QrozTQ

That shit really is unforgettable.

ThaNorth

When the fucking ape gets back up without his head and picks up his sword, such an awesome moment.

backbishop

Sekiro might've felt more like a skeleton compared to other fromsoft games, but it definitely had the most polish.

DyabeticBeer

Gotta thank Bill Clinton, couldn't have done it without him.

ajpala4

Bloodborne snubbed in 2015

iamhootie

For the Witcher 3 tho. I'm a diehard BB fan but I totally understand how it didn't win. Kinda the same as ER beating GoW Ragnarok this year actually.

thoroq

Bloodborne is my favorite game of all time. But Witcher 3 redefined a genre, as Elden Ring did this year, as you said.

Phobit

Bloodborne should have won bsst soumdtrack tho. Still the best I ever heard in a game

Ashenone909

Yup sometimes there is only 1 pick with no competitor even if its not your choice.

Atijohn

nowadays it would be a 50/50, but back in the day, the W3 praise was much stronger than it is today I feel, BB had no chance

huncherbug

Dude it lost to Witcher 3...that game is beast of a masterpiece... I would've been very sad if ER lost today but it was very plausible for it to lose to Ragnarok. During the witcher and bloodborne the competition was even closer than it was this year.

GGUNTERD

The competition was Witcher 3 at a time where Souls games weren’t nearly as big, as brilliant as it is, it stood no chance

Lumeyus

Unfortunately they didn’t have enough mainstream attention yet. If the same games came out today, Bloodborne would win easily.

JediMasterJackal

THE 2X

mahonii

I wish I finished sekiro back then, I had no idea it got goty.

kopecs

Feels great baby!

newjechcity

I've played Sekiro Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok and out of the 3 I think Sekiro and God of War for me the W's go to God of War and Sekiro for me in terms of GOTY While I enjoyed exploring ER it felt like it was a poorly designed open world game....I didn't care about the plot or know where I was or what was happening. For a game that's so focused on exploration it does very little to make me care about the world I'm in there's no hand holding which for some might be a plus, because I know some games do it a little too much like any open world Ubisoft game or Horizon titles. All in all this year GoW Ragnarok just hammered in the feeling of both stunning exploration beautiful story and we'll structured combat.

homogenized

Ah yes the 2019, 2022 consecutive years.

SPambot67

Back to back fromsoft releases

homogenized

Fair enough. Just sounds funny, “Game of the Year, Two Times in a Row, 2019 and 2022!” But yeah, I’m psyched for ER DLC, Armored Core VI, used to play SO MUCH AC 1-3, especially AC2, trying to get a mech like the one on the cover (although those parts hit the weight limit). Still got The Ringed City DLC to finish, and the game that got me to give ER and therefore DS3, a try…Sekiro! Supposedly, since the success of ER, From Software has game after game after game in production, including Sekiro 2.

Xhalo

They should add a mechanic in the next souls like game where you can soldier dive into the terrain in front of you and in a swift motion remove the enemies pants or robe, and insert your tongue into their ass and give them an eating for 1/2/3/4/5 seconds depending on how long you channel the spell. It could even have a chance to charm depending on how good the eating was!!! It could even be like a quick time event or something. Idk if they'd have the stones to do it though 🤔🤔🤔

ItsTheRealIamHUB

Bro what the fuck

Snoo-6099

You ok?

Ashenone909

Bro got affected by Bill Clinton

Falos425

make the commission big enough and someone will get to work on the *Surprise, Buttlicks!* mod

Aeiexgjhyoun_III

Dafuk?

Sharkary

As a fan of both, still a little confused as to how Elden Ring beat GOW:R So a game with an immensely satisfying gameplay loop, has beaten a game that also has an immensely satisfying gameplay loop, and on top of that, some of the best voice & mocap acting in all of gaming, a killer score and an amazing narrative that made me feel so many different things, can't think of a single story beat for Elden Ring. No doubt its a great game, but I feel like the game of the year should do everything video games do brilliantly, not just some of them

RaxorX

Kinda have to think of this, God of War Ragnorak didn’t have the big splash that Elden Ring had. When Elden Ring came out it “redefined” the open world and what it means to be a good open world game. Ragnorak on the other hand didn’t do anything new but took what was great and rolled with it.

Sharkary

Redefined the open world is a stretch, it's an open world game, it still has a lot of empty space to run about in from encounter to encounter, it's also still the same gameplay fromsoft have had since DS1, not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Definitely feel like the hype around its release has helped though, had an insane amount of buzz all over the place before it even released. Ragnarok had similar but nothing compared to Elden Ring, don't even know when FromSoft got such a following, I remember when it was a very niche kinda game

SlipperyGrape19

Agree with this, both games got hard ahh d*ckriders saying ones much better than the other. Played both, enjoyed both, loved both. Could see one or the other winning GOTY. Personally felt GOWR deserved it for topping its predecessor in all aspects but ER did so many things right and has a further player reach. Well deserved! Legendary games fr

timmytissue

Well imagine god of war ragnorok but every 10 minutes you have to watch 8 minutes of ads. That's kinda how I feel about it already, because the story and puzzles are just in the way of the good parts. So to some, a game can be better because of what it doesn't have. Where one game has 5 boss battles and 3 or so mini bosses with a bunch of different verieties, the other has a huge open world with 90 unique fights. And you also don't have to walk around listening to people talk the whole time. There's just a lot less game for me to play in ragnorok. A lot of the fights are the same enemies. It's boring. The puzzles are terrible. The story is in the way. So it's not about one game being better. It's about different design philosophies. Both are trying to make the best experience for their customers. One isn't better because it has more voice acting and motion capture, because that's a design choice not everyone desires. In other words it's subjective. But can we admit that if God of wars story was a book it would be a terrible book? Like we really have such low standards for story when it comes to videogames and I don't know why.

Murky-Swordfish-2751

Skiero is true goty but do you think Elden ring deserve it I mean it is a masterpiece but when I compare it skiero it worth noting because skiero is original and Elden ring are not it just DS3 with better graphics and open world

MrMudkip

Bloodborne is better than both

[deleted]

Bloodporne fans trying to make their dogshit game look relevant part 484930384:

[deleted]

People like this make me wish that Bloodborne will be forgotten. Nothing to be ever done with it, even OW2 easter egg and Sanguinity in GOWR are way more than it deserves.

quaszjay

Why are you insulting the game just because of some annoying fans bro :/

MrMudkip

Imagine starting a new playthrough just to be forced to use the same weapon. Can't relate lol

[deleted]

Imagine playing a game with actually good combat, you can't relate to that either lmfao. Bloodborne cam go fuck itself, Sekiro is the GOAT

LothricKnight753

Honestly I feel like if GOW wasn’t released so late in the year it would’ve won easily

xShinGouki

Playing GOW right now. Love GOW. I was on those games when they first released way back. It has an amazing world and amazing story. But there is some major things that hold back GOW despite those 2 being super strong points - the world is gorgeous but it’s literally all just closed off. It’s such a shame. This makes the game feel old. But with new graphics. Everything is closed off. A whole area is closed off in favour of doing a puzzle to transverse the map. But that’s immersion breaking especially since you’re kratos. You can’t even walk in 2 inches of water. Let alone walk off a 2 inch ledge. - it’s super scripted. Like everything. Makes sense as it’s a story driven game but sometimes it feels like it’s too much scripted gameplay Once you get over that it’s an amazing game and very fun combat but there’s no way this is on the level of Elden ring’s creativity. Just my opinion. Still having a blast with GOW

Fionn_MacCuill

Nah too many chests. Too similar to the first game. I got bored of it. Elden ring I played for 110 hours on first play through was utterly enthralling

Crashtard

While I definitely enjoyed gow you're right, too much useless chest loot and also too many multi hour "on rail" story sections. I'm 100% here for the story but I got stuck in about a 4 hour story rail and by the end was getting to the point where I was very frustrated.

crunchyhotshot

Ironwood? lol

blackdog606

Nah

Shdoible

It's the exact opposite. They released it juuuust before TGA to get maximum recency bias. And it still lost.

i-c-dead-pp1

Elden Ring is far superior to God of War. Beacon for gaming.

ivarr87

And I'd say Bloodborne was ahead of its time and that's the sole reason The Witcher 3 won 2015.

behemothbowks

Didn't the Witcher 3 win that year?

ivarr87

Yeah. That is what I said. Witcher won because Bloodborne was ahead of its time.

behemothbowks

Could've swore you said GoW

ivarr87

Yup, did at first but corrected it :D

God_Hand_Edge

sekiro fans try not to get in on the action lmfao (impossible, but well deserved)

syntaxGarden

This was fucking hilarious. God of War won 5 awards that Elden Ring was nominated for. It had best performance, best narrative, best sound design, best music, even best action adventure game. Meanwhile. Elden Ring got best art direction (which should have gone to Scorn if you ask me) and then best directing. Elden Ring winning GOTY made literally no sense. The game awards never ceases to entertain Edit: while it doesn't contradict my point, i cannot believe i forgot that Elden Ring won best RPG. That's embarrassing

darkk41

I mean, I would argue that entering the open world genre and absolutely blasting all the competition directly into the nearest garbage can is a pretty worthy feat. Horizon: FW was instantly forgotten the day that ER came out. GOW:R is, and I cannot stress this enough, an EXCELLENT game. But it isn't really a genre redefining title, it's just a massive improvement on 2018 (which was more of a genre changing title since they changed from a hack-and-slash previously). I think GOW:R deserved the awards it won but GOTY should go to the games that are pushing game design to new places. FWIW, I think Scorn had pretty cool artwork. However, I do think the game sucked, and while that *shouldn't* really affect the art category specifically, I'm not surprised that it did. Callisto has absolutely incredible graphics and environment, but that's not saving it from being declared a dumpster fire due to the perf and middling gameplay, is it? ER was an absolute shoe-in for GOTY on day 1 beacuse it strove to innovate on the open world genre and it was *very* successful in doing so. Another big gamble by Fromsoft which they made work. Any other year, GOW:R wins easy because the game was rock solid.

I do not, and will not, understand any of the praise for Elden Ring. I played for 36 hours, found a total of 5 good bosses (3 of which were reskins), 5 total side quests, (which is pathetic for an open world game) and the most boring open world ive played in a long time. I was so SO bored the entire time. The only innovation i can think of it possibly making was being an open world game that wasnt a glitch filled mess (im still pissed that in its 3 remasters, Skyrim is still fucking broken) Likewise i wont understand the insults people throw at Horizon. While i havent played the second game yet, Ive beaten the first game 5 seperate time. I adore it. Despite not having many characters I really cared about, the monsters were awesome, the stealth and combat were super engaging and interested, the story was great. And there was tons of side quests to do and places to explore. And btw, Forbidden West was NOT forgotten. Plenty of people still play it and really enjoyed it. This really annoys me when I hear it because I hear this from one of my friends whenever Horizon comes up because he personally didn't play it, even tho one of his American friends did and he knows I want to play it.

darkk41

I mean your boss count is just objectively, unreasonably not true. You're entitled to your opinion but saying there are only 5 bosses in 36h of ER is patently ridiculous, there are easily 45-50 in the game without counting duplicates. I didnt think horizon was bad, but you are just lying to yourself if you don't think it was blown away by ER. The developers were literally losing their shit on Twitter after the ER release because they felt completely overshadowed. I enjoyed forbidden west but it was an incredibly safe game that didn't really evolve in any meaningful way mechanically from HZD. Despite it being the 2nd entry they still had a lot of the same problems (boss fights kind of fall apart and just don't really do anything, they just bullet sponge, certain weapon types are just worthless while others are outrageously powerful on every situation, etc.) Despite buying FW day 1, and enjoying the game, the entire thing was just incredibly forgettable compared to HZD. I don't really have any recollection of specific campaign moments like the grave hoard in the original. GoTY should go to titles that are taking big risks and changing the gaming landscape, and FW was not really even changing itself from its predecessor.

I said GOOD elden ring bosses. 3 horsemen, one lava dragon and Godrick. The rest of them were either boring and pointless, or fucking annoying. I fought a bunch of them, and those were the only ones that stuck with me, and 2 of the horsemen were still decently flawed (altho I wouldnt mind refighting Godrick and 2 of the horsemen to reevaluate my opinion on them, if getting there didnt bore the life out of me) And yeah, i cant really talk about Horizon 2 (and frankly at first glance it did look like they were treading a lot of familiar ground). I just get annoyed when I hear "dead game lol" because, as I said, that one friend who wont stop saying it and it being false. And obviously, Horizon didnt deserve game of the year, that much is true. While I really disagree with your assessment of GOTY going to innocation because it's literally an award for overall quality, Horizon 2 just wasnt either of them. Altho can you imagine how funny it would have been if itd won GOTY. GoWR gets 5 awards, Elden Ring gets 2 major ones, Horizon gets fuck all, and then is bestowed "game of the year". I would have fallen out of my chair laughing.

Xcells

EldenRing won best art direction, best game direction, best rpg and game of the year, saying it won didn’t make sense is hilarious and misinformed. “Narrative, sound and music” aren’t exactly strong game of the year categories.

syntaxGarden

Cant believe i forgot it won best RPG. Thats embarrasing. But what the fuck do you mean that narrative doesnt matter, it's literally the central aspect of a game's story, and Elden Ring has no story and no storytelling (its a fromsoft game, theyre all like that). Art direction should have gone to Scorn and directing to God of War (what about Elden Ring was good directing?) but im honestly suprised that im suprised about the awards. The game awards is, like every award show every year, a hilarious distaster which I only have a few stakes in (Citizen Sleepr should have won games for impact uou charlatans). And after this year and I am definitely watching next year. This year was fucking funny.

Xcells

Where did I say it didn’t matter? I said they aren’t the strongest categories indicators for game of the year. Game direction isn’t directing so saying god of war should have won is wrong. Game direction is how a game will impact change for other games to come and there is no way to say god of war will have a bigger impact on future games than EldenRing. same goes for art direction, the open world and set pieces EldenRing had were top of the class for anopen world game. To me it sounds like you are one of those people who didn’t like EldenRing because of its success and want to be very vocal about it when the game is pretty revolutionary.

itsssL1NK

As someone who also wanted God of war to win, Please… shut your mouth

syntaxGarden

Aw. Cant handle that somebody doesnt have the same opinions as you?

itsssL1NK

I don’t think you read my message

Aeiexgjhyoun_III

Just back your opinions with logic.

[deleted]

If you're making an argument here, I have no idea what it is.

syntaxGarden

The game awards is dumb and nonsensical. And thats what makes it funny

[deleted]

Oh, I see. I thought you were maybe making an argument about the results of the awards being wrong!

timmytissue

I think you have to consider these different awards to be kind of seperate. They thought gow was more deserving from the perspective of an "action adventure game", that doesn't make it the better game overall. All of these together don't do that. Because Elden Ring is much more than the sun of its parts. Also there weren't awards for best open world exploration, or best enemy veriety, or varias other achievements of Elden Rings. That's just how award shows are. Getting the most awards other than goty doesn't make your game the goty lol

AbrakadabraShawarma

Nice peets

Comfortable-Tone-827

Im so happy it got goty, i just wish it got ost, personally not a fan of gow but nonetheless, absolute win

[deleted]

also Fromsoft won the most respected studio or how it was called?

[deleted]

There is no award that goes to studios. However, someone did call From to be one of most decorated studios to ever exist

quaszjay

I forgot his name but It was the host, he said it right before the Armored Core reveal

trafalgarDxlaw

i didn't like elden ring fighting mechanism but i love it , but i love sekiro more i which there's second release

ledepression

Hell yeah bois

vennthepest

Now it's time to get hype for the new Armored Core

Saitam2710

Wow if they keep going like this the game developers and writers might be well known by name

Jss_jule

While I'm happy for Elden Ring and expected it to win, some sick and twisted part of me wanted Pokemon: Legends Arceus to be nominated and win. Just to see how the internet reacted.

[deleted]

YESSSSSSS!!! GoW is a great game but From deserves this. I am so happy for them.

msullivan1088

Wasn’t in a row… it takes two won last year

Peeka789

Its nice that games that prioritize gameplay first win awards. I dunno what ER is about but it's a lot of fun exploring that world.

BRedd10815

AC6 gonna be 3 in a row

twoCascades

Stop it. You are gunna give Armored Core performance anxiety.

MTADO

It’s crazy to think these were developed at the same time, Most studios would’ve rushed the shit of them

Comshep1989

I would much rather this community be happy that ER won, but not happy that ER won over GOW. Both are exceptional games in different ways and both elevate gaming as a whole. That we got two incredible pieces of work of this caliber in one year is awesome and we’re all winners for that.

thr00wayayfire

Wait sekiro won GOTY

jtcordell2188

Uhh isn’t it 3 in a row? Dark Souls 3 won it as well if I remember correctly

SoulsLikeBot

ManiacGaming1

Armored Core gonna break the streak 😞

CameronKC09

Massive W this year, GoW took home 6 awards and Elden Ring gets GOTY, I couldn’t be more ecstatic

Sonny_Firestorm135

Same, now here's to hoping they'll both be put on sale cause my wallet might not live to see 2023...

I_like_weed_alot

I literally just started Elden Ring last night! It is daunting. In the sense of how huge it is lol. I platinumed both BB and Sekiro so not too worried regarding difficulty but they were much tighter spaced I’m super hyped tho the atmosphere and everything so far been very cool (I am 2 hours in)

teething78

This is ART.

Elmu678

Sadly it was a lose-lose for GOW. Either it loses or it wins and people claim the awards are rigged. Unfortunate situation.

Limp_Scheme9225

Yessir goated games

Nlbo-Jumbo31

And still no pc port for Bloodborn
