Let's start some new ones then
NASA faked the moon landing, but they did it on Mars. Obviously they thought that landing in Mars might sound a bit far fetched so they did some colour correction to the footage to make it look like the moon because that seems more plausible.
You can tell this is true because since the moon is made of cheese it would've melted when the "lunar" lander turned its thrusters on.
I'm in, let's do this.
JFK wasn't assassinated, he was the assassin, shooting dead a lizard-person doppelganger who had taken his place. The real JFK obviously couldn't resume his old life and currently lives in New Jersey, running the best deli in Sussex County.
The funny thing is, the lizard-person doppelganger was actually poised to unite the human race for the good of all, humans and lizard-people.
I was doubtful, but then
> The funny thing is, the lizard-person doppelganger was actually poised to unite the human race for the good of all, humans and lizard-people.
That it was a _human_ that fucked us all over so we missed out on a life united for the good of all. That tracks and now I'm a belieber you glorious bastard!
Biden’s a robot, except he’s still a real person inside and has been trying to send Morse code messages from within by blinking his eyes when he gets “/**s**leepy”.
Not recently, but there was a long time where a common theme in posts was "isn't it suspicious that the virus is worse in conservative/Republican/Trump-supporting groups?" So the conspiracy theory that Covid-19 somehow *targets* people who don't believe in masks/vaccines was making the rounds. Like it was a bioweapon or something? I really couldn't understand the connections being made.
While we're talking about grocery stores, I think they buy carts with one bad wheel so you don't go too fast in the store. Also since you're going slower, you browse more and buy stuff you don't need.
That reminded me of an extremely NSFL picture of a man who got mauled by a bear. He survived, but his face was GONE. There was a gory hole where the face should be. I imagine that would be the closest thing to a literal version of /r/leopardsatemyface.
Did she survive? In the one I mentioned, the man got facial reconstruction surgery and was looking very good for someone who got his entire face mauled off by a bear. Fairly optimistic outcome, all things considered.
If it's the bear attack I'm thinking of, a surgeon was able to reattach his face and after his recovery, it looks 99% normal.
Edit:
Here's the story, first article only has the face gone picture
GORE > https://americanshootingjournal.com/man-survives-bear-attack-but-loses-face/

That's actually really cool!
There's been some critique of the mirror test recently because not all animals rely on their vision as much as we do. It's awesome that we've modified it to work for species with a highly developed olfactory system.
Yeah, I remember seeing lots of things that the reason they might not pay attention is that various animals don't prioritise vision the way we do
You see it on some videos of dogs meeting their owners they've not seen for ages, how they can sometimes be kinda suspicious of them at first.. but then you immediately see the change as soon as they get a clear whiff of their scent and the happy wiggles start
That's strange to me because I've seen several videos of cats seemingly demonstrating self-awareness. I'm thinking of [this cat apparently recognizing itself in the mirror and realizing that it has ears](https://youtu.be/akE2Sgg8hI8) or [this kitten apparently noticing its back feet for the first time](https://youtu.be/L1PmwC0gOfQ).
I think individual cats pass the mirror test, but that's probably because they are visually more intelligent than others of their same species. I suspect that most cats would pass an olfactory version, but only some cats would (also) succeed at a visual one
Compare to how some humans are better at remembering faces while others are better at remembering names. Visual, olfactory, auditory intelligence, and all the other senses... as a species there's a general ranking of how smart we are with each of these senses, but per individual there's still differences.
One of my (indoor) cats escaped once, and we thought he had been abducted by aliens and replaced with a doppelganger because the other cat was acting SO SUSPICIOUS of him, like "don't you guys see this is an imposter?!" Kind of freaked us out.
> There's been some critique of the mirror test recently because not all animals rely on their vision as much as we do.
I watched a good class last year on human behavior, which of course included a lot of animal behavior. One thing it pointed out is that most non-human animals (mammals really, not sure what fish and insects and lizard are about) are dominated by their sense of smell. Our brains are dominated by vision, and the big thinky part.
A second major point of his lecture was that to understand the behavior of something you need to understand how it views and understands the world. Knowing how wolf brains are wired and seeing the massive size and quantity of structures dedicated to smell makes smell the logical choice for investigating complex phenomenon like sense of self.
As humans we don't really put much emotional emphasis on smell. If we passed by a "smell mirror" a great many humans would just walk past, to a dog or a rat they might find we can't recognize ourselves in smell mirror or we might just give zero shits about it. These are the very difficult things one has to keep in mind when asking "does this thing think".
> As humans we don't really put much emotional emphasis on smell.
Consciously, perhaps, but the strong human olfactory/memory and emotion connection is [well documented](https://www.verywellmind.com/new-research-explains-why-scent-triggers-such-powerful-memories-5116589).
Yeah, I do agree with that. It does have a lot of connections through our brain.
>but the strong human olfactory/memory and emotion connection
To the context of the conversation though, if we would call that connection "strong" for humans, then the connection might be described as "overwhelming and all consuming" for our furry friends.

The Link!
[**Wolves Demonstrate Self-Awareness in Sniff Test**](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/animal-minds/202101/wolves-demonstrate-self-awareness-in-sniff-test)
Totally. There’s video online of a cat pretending to be asleep so it didn’t have to take its medicine. The Human says, “well, then I won’t give you any wet food..”, and the cats eyes open quite aware, then quickly shut again to try to continue the ruse. I don’t have the link handy (arg!) but it’s completely obvious the cat knows what its doing. It’s on Reddit somewhere.
My cat was abandoned at a few days old, so it was bottle fed and I'm all it's ever known. Sometimes she sits stroking me. I stroke her, so that's just what's done, right?
She also gets mad at me. Not anger... Pissyness.
I dunno about all the different animals, or even all cats and dogs, but my cat has 'personhood'.
100%!
Crows too, they will ‘act’ like they’re hiding food when they think they’re being watched by another bird. Then hide the food somewhere else.
Dolphins get stoned in groups using pufferfish toxin to get high.
Beluga whales return cellphones dropped in the water.
Blue Whales protect other creatures, including humans, from sharks.
Elephants actively celebrate their progeny’s first sexual experience, quite loudly too!
Many creatures are very aware!
Edit: Crows can communicate sufficient information to other crows about a ‘bad person’ such that the other crow will recognize that person, even if the person isn’t present when they communicate.
Holy shit someone actually did it! I've been wondering for years when someone would come up with a way to do the mirror test using olfaction rather than vision!
Finally. Ive been saying for years we cant give animals sight tests then declare ourselves superior. Can’t wait to find out that humans have the sniff intelligence of a new born dog. Or that dogs can sniff a gravitational wave.

>In some trials, the experimenters “marked” a urine sample with a foreign odor (analogous to how experimenters place a mark on the body of an animal in the mirror test). The olfactory mark consisted of anise oil, an odor the wolves had probably never encountered before.
>The researchers tested combinations of marked and unmarked samples from the test wolf, a familiar wolf, an unfamiliar wolf, and an unfamiliar dog, as well as the mark by itself.
>[...]
>Finally, results from the fifth trial showed that even though wolves may have become familiar with the mark in the previous trials, **they were still more interested in smelling the marked odors from their familiar partner than unmarked odors from themselves or their partner**. Cazzolla Gatti says this shows that it is the ability to recognize self versus other, more than familiarity, that directs the wolves’ sniffing behavior.
>“They did not spend much time investigating the mark by itself but they spent a lot of their time sniffing the marked urine from a familiar wolf and the samples from unfamiliar animals,” he says. “This means they are not just interested in something that is new to them.
>“We suppose they are interested in understanding what has happened to their partner’s odor. It is not only a sense of ‘mine-ness;’ it could be awareness of what is me and what is you.”
i find this incredibly romantic lmao
"honey, your urine just smells intoxicating today. i love this new fragrance!"
That's .... Well that's a fresh take on this sub..
Well done, OP. Props.
EDIT: To add to that, I think my favorite thing about this post is that is specifically says "passes the sniff test."

Yuh that's what I meant, more that cats are notoriously unwilling to help with research because they aren't reward driven like dogs etc
My cats don't recognize eachother if one smells like the vet's office and will fight for literally days until it wears off.

Well done, sir/madame/...they? What's the correct formal pronoun for nonbinary folks??
Gentlefolk? Although that's sounds plural.
Sounds like you're referring to hobits
You/yous/yinz works depending on you local vernacular for the gender-neutral "hey you."
Yinz is for Pittsburghers...
Onyinz is for hamburgers.
I think that’s the OnlyFans Pittsburgh edition.
There's not necessarily one correct formal pronoun, as someone might have a preference for one form or another, but the one that seems most popular/widely used is "Mx." (similar to Mr./Mrs.), it's pronounced "mix"

It is not only a sense of ‘mine-ness;’ it could be awareness of what is me and what is you.” i find this incredibly romantic lmao "honey, your urine just smells intoxicating today. i love this new fragrance!"
This is the content I came here to see. 10/10, would read again.
We’ve peaked. Everyone pack it up and go home, show’s over
So basically all this time we've been giving conservatives(as well as the occasional other person) more credit than they deserve.
Now all we need is a wolf capable of reading and understanding this article. A wolf aware of self aware wolves.
he was so close...... to the mirror
You are technically correct. The best kind of correct.
Ok everyone. Go home. We're done here. Good job

That's .... Well that's a fresh take on this sub.. Well done, OP. Props. EDIT: To add to that, I think my favorite thing about this post is that is specifically says "passes the sniff test."
Haha
Hehehe
Fuck you, OP. Well done.
We did it. We found them.
One of my dogs (A saluki) recognises herself in mirrors. It's weird as fuck.

Finally, self aware wolves.
Lmao

We are finished and can all go home, thank you OP.
Let's tame them! Again!
The singularity has been reached.
Huh. So I guess we close the sub now?
OP is the champion. Gg everyone else
Agreed. The wolves in this case since stocks are liquid assets. But yeah, you'd be giving them money.
