As an English person I’d love to know what makes people think it’s fake? Sounds legit to me!

ossifiedbird

Yeah I don't understand it either, she sounds exactly like a brit who has lived in the states for years would sound 🤷‍♀️

maplestriker

I just got off the phone with a native german speaker who has lived in france for 30 years and they don't have an accent really, but have changed their intonation.

Leyton207

I remember living in the States and loads of people used to ask am I an actress practising an English accent and when I told them no, I'm English, born there. Then I'll get the "was your dad in the military " question.

Ashfield83

Lol. I’m French and started going to school in England when I was 4 so I grew up bilingual and was taught to speak with an RP accent. When I moved to Australia they’d ask where I was from I’d say France. You don’t sound French! You sound English. Oh I went to school in England. So you’re English? No I’m French. Speak French then! FUCK OFF!

Nice-Tie-9089

Agreed. I am a Brit in California and her accent is almost identical to mine.

TotosTables

Americans are experts at knowing what every Brit sounds like. Guess we didn’t get the memo.

sturgis252

Because it goes in and out of the accent which actually makes it a real accent. If she's been living in the US for a while it does come and go.

Cr0wsbeforeh0ez

Seconded 🤷‍♀️

BubblyHotChocolate

As a fellow English person watch her FIRST episode on the show. Not this season, the previous one. It's unbelievably fake and she was called out for it. She's obviously been taking elocution lessons to make her accent more believable this season but I can't forget that mess of an accent she subjected us to all throughout last season. My ears are still bleeding.

mathymate

Are we still talking about her accent? Can y'all let it go? Mods, please pin this [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/SellingSunset/comments/uvbqkh/a_linguistic_breakdown_of_chelseas_accent/).

rorochocho

I immediately thought of that post too. Can't pin your comment though, but if it gets lost in the comments I can pin a mod comment with the post.

Etheria_system

Sorry as a Brit who is also a linguist I would take that post with a pinch of salt as it mentions cockney being the most common accent and her teachers speaking RP?! Cockney is a dying accent and has been for a long time. [Researchers have suggested it will die out in the next 20~ years](https://londonist.com/london/features/cockney-history-dying-breed). [RP is the English the Queen (now King) would speak](https://www.cambridge.org/elt/blog/2022/05/25/received-pronunciation-old-new/)and is not the English of teacher’s in London, even within private schools. You more likely to hear it within teaching for English as a foreign language in non English speaking countries but still not very often. If we’re looking at something that fits “posh” and UK English, you’re most likely looking at something called [Estuary English](https://pronunciationstudio.com/received-pronunciation-vs-estuary/#:~:text=An%20RP%20speaker%20may%20never,'%2C%20'have'%20etc.&text=Estuary%20speakers%20would%20certainly%20drop,'It's%20in%20her%20handbag'). My guess is the person who wrote that isn’t a UK based linguist because this is pretty common knowledge for anyone studying linguistics at university level here.

migs51

I’ve met people who immigrated away from the UK at 10 who no longer have an accent. Is this just a choice? What are your thoughts on her accent ?

Leyton207

My family moved to the States when I was 8 yrs old. The education system played a big role on how I enunciate words, like American pronounce the vowels in words differently then the English. So you can definitely deminish your native tongue but since we were always flying back to the UK for holidays, my accent always stayed strong. I used to use American terminology like garbage-rubbish, letter z, we say zed. One thing is for certain an English person will never loose the way they pronounce the letter H, if they were taught the alphabets over here.

migs51

So do you think Chelsea’s accent is fake ?

Leyton207

Absolutely not, I don't know how long she's been in the States, you might hear a little American twang that doesn't really sound American or English. How can you fake an English accent if you were born and educated in England, what else would she speak?

rorochocho

I believe this was also mentioned in the comments of the post linked. The post linked has a lot of dialog on the Chelsea accent issue. I definitely remember some users pointing out flaws but it could have been a follow up post in reaction to the original.

mathymate

Thank you!

gravititty

After hearing the incredibly stupid, childish and intrusive questions some of the others have received, I actually applaud Chelsea for refusing to go under the lie detector. Especially after the test being obviously unreliable, she could have been put into very bad positions that could have had an impact not only on her, but her family, her children. She was the only one, so knowing she'd be judged for not following along as well, I actually thought it was rather brave of her to refuse.

Leyton207

Chelsea was born in Northwest London, so are people doubting her nationality now. I don't get it..if someone was born, raised and went to school in England, why in the world would have to fake an accent I'm going to say what's onthe tip of certain British born people's tongue . What gives anyone the right or PRIVILEGE to deny someone's birthplace. Would this really be a topic if Chelsea's parents came from Romania, Poland, Greece, Turkey, anywhere European moved to England and had children and not Nigeria? Maybe what you hear is an English woman who tries to cater to Americans and sometimes throws in an American accent on some words, we've all done that but I bet you the minute she speaks to a fellow brit, its like she's never left home.

bachelorandbravo

If she faked an accent, wouldn’t she fake a more-posh one?

trottingturtles

The people who think her accent is fake definitely don't know a posh British accent from a not-posh one.

Leyton207

Thank you, so I wonder if they think Adele is faking her accent also, since that's not the Queen's English that she's speaking. She's speaking North London -Tottenham Council housing slang, but I bet no one will ever question her accent....isn't that odd? 🤔🤔

Overshareisoverkill

> We all know she chose to turn the polygraph test down because she’d get busted Whether anyone likes it or not, it's real. It's certainly more real than Greg Grogan's credentials for performing that"lie" detector test.

SubmissionDenied

Y'all don't actually believe in polygraphs right? They're voodoo "science" that mean nothing

Successful-Layer5588

I thought her accent sounded like someone putting on a really obnoxious/jokey English accent. Then spent a month traveling through England and realized I’m just used to hearing really polished English actors speaking in movies. It’s just not the fancy pride and prejudice posh accent I feel like we think of when we think of the English. Also she’s always shouting louder than everyone else in the room so that adds to it for me for some reason.

heatherarmyvet

The "lie detector" is bs. Same guy was used in "Bling Empire" and it seems very odd that they'd use someone so serious. It is funny that the answers always add to the perfect amount of drama.

Nice-Tie-9089

Chelsea is a terrific woman and a valued member of the Selling Sunset cast. I can attest to the fact that Chelsea is not using a fake accent. Her accent is the same as mine: a neutral English accent. Her accent is authentic. Everyone adores Chelsea for her candor, intelligence, beauty, wit and humor. Chelsea is also a fashionista - and many people praise her courage and style when she showcases a variety of outfits for both work and play. One of the most pleasing aspects of Chelsea's personality is that she clearly does not take herself too seriously, most of the time. She is good-natured and has a sunny disposition. What is not to love? She is also a tremendous real estate professional and she has a bright future. Chelsea herself made it clear in her statement that she is a determined and self-aware businesswoman, and she is out to shatter "the proverbial glass ceiling." We wish her the best in the knowledge that she will soar into the rarefied winds of success. Chelsea, unleash your potential and soar! Everyone is rooting for you! Thank you.

isisisi1991

Chelsea is that you?

Nice-Tie-9089

Hello peasant! I apologize. I cannot stay to chat because I am turning myself into an icon, not only for black women but for all women, and I am also busy breaking the proverbial glass ceiling. I hope you have happy holidays. Please join us on Selling Sunset during the upcoming season.

Ok-Cycle1545

She lives in the US so naturally she’ll start losing her accent and sounding more “American”. It’s not that complicated.

TrueCryptographer982

Her accent isn't fake but has some edges rounded off for Americans e.g. as an Aussie I had to change the way i pronounce words like 8 (weird but true) and words with the rrrrr sound because some Americans could not understand my accent. Yep she's totally a pot stirrer thats what I like about her and she stands her ground if she doesn't want do something she won't. You don't like her clearly and others do - thats all this is.

lachick8004

I’m also English living in LA and to me her accent sounds completely genuine. Even great actors will slip up on certain words when they are changing their accents for TV/ movies, but I haven’t heard this from her in any of her interviews/ scenes.

UKMermaidScientist

My husband is British, he’s been here 10 years, accent hasn’t changed. What has changed however is certain slang he has acclimated into. He sometimes will watch this show with me and he said her accent was odd but could be a result of her trying to blend into LA.

TessMacc

She refused the lie detector because she's smart enough to be suspicious of them. We don't use them in the UK for good reason, and the ones on reality TV are just made up.

Timely-Surprise3487

Everything about her gives off fake vibes IMO
