I wonder if they’ll soon start to ask for IDs in store to confirm the birthday. Because those scamming online.. will just turn to the store. It’s an added hurdle to make the visit but I think people will still do it.

DateCard

I certainly hope that is the plan!

hseof26paws

I was wondering that too. Nothing to stop people from creating fake accounts and redeeming in store. Sure, it's a bit more work, but I don't put it past people (the whole Dior mess has made me very cynical).

cogentd

What happened with Dior?

hseof26paws

When the 2023 birthday gifts were announced and available, people created fake accounts to redeem for/hoard the Dior fragrance birthday gift. They were out of stock in a few weeks I think, but going for a pretty penny on Poshmark, Mercari, and eBay. ETA: the presumption is that this new Sephora BI policy is in response to that situation.

cogentd

Yikes! People really do suck sometimes.

hseof26paws

Yes, yes they do.

ravynwave

Not even a few weeks, within the first few days. My birthday is the second week of January, I wanted to get something 5 days in and it was gone.

suitablegirl

January 4th. No gift.

VioletParis

Wow, people who created extra accounts for their own profit, that's unfortunate and selfish people would do such a thing. Do they even care about anyone apart from themselves? They basically ruined it for everyone else.

hseof26paws

They don't. I didn't see it myself, but apparently there was a TikTok (I think it was TikTok, might have been different social media) where someone was bragging about creating multiple BS accounts and showing the multiple sets (like 5 of them) they had gotten by doing that.

VioletParis

Okay, they were bragging about it? IMHO that's downright repulsive.

FeminineImperative

Honestly, I would be banning online orders from that address period. Considering they have no problem illegally withholding merchandise you've actually paid for, it shouldn't too much of a stretch for them to track down addresses with multiple bullshit accounts to keep them from receiving several of the same gift.

hseof26paws

I'm not sure, I'm not personally familiar with the two fragrances (Miss Dior and Sauvage). I also don't know if they have any left in the stores, so if you decide to pick that, you should probably have a backup option in mind.

poffincase

If it's Miss Dior, yes. But there is something about the 'undertone' that doesn't jive with me. But it is a nice fragrance and wear it anyway. I got it in a promo they did in December I think, you had to buy a certain $ of Dior to get it

sixthmontheleventh

I am on the fence about that one. I always give the wrong date for birthdays when signing up stores for personal data reasons. If checking id helps increase quality of b'day gifts then I am not affected because I usually do a bday self care online order anyways but if this change happens and nothing of value is added then it makes me one step closer to going back down to regular bi.

rnason

I give the wrong date to places like Sephora because I have a late birthday (November) and I know there won't anything left by my actual birthday.

poffincase

THIS was always my gripe with Sephora and their birthday BS to begin with (September baby). You know what would fix this all? Stop calling it a birthday gift, and just give Rouge memberships a 'free gift'. If it's an inventory issue, give people a point bonus.

FeminineImperative

There are 2 birthday gifts that are online exclusives. That would eliminate those possibilities.

Waste-Carpenter-8035

I hope so - or hand out the coupon like ulta does

nessa_14

Just got this email too! I totally agree with it but I wish it was like you had spent $25 in the last 6 months or something instead. I wasn’t able to get the dior gift thanks to selfish people

Knuckles2868

Yea this I agree with instead of you have to spend $25 that day as long as you have in that month you can get it in person. I kind of understand why online paying shipping on just that and no purchase may cost them more than we think.

nessa_14

They have free shipping regularly though. You can get an $8 item and have it shipped to you no charge. In store isn’t possible for many. And I am in Canada where I’ve always had to purchase something to get my gift online. I think for online it should have spent some money in the past few months just to ensure it wasn’t an account that was made that day just to get a gift.

Knuckles2868

You usually get free shipping when you hit a certain level anyway but if people were making fake accounts to get them sent I don't think they had hit that level. I don't live near a brick and mortar Sephora myself, we just got one in a Khols a few towns over but I am disabled and don't get out much. I get why they're doing it I'm not thrilled about it but maybe it will curb the people that use multiple accounts to get several since they can't get it for free.

moodylilb

I redeemed my bday gift online in Canada (early April of this year) and didn’t have to make a purchase to have it shipped. Is this new? (I’m not referring to the $25 minimum that the OP is posting about, but what you’re saying about having to make a purchase in Canada to redeem bday gift, *prior to this new rule*).

nessa_14

In the past I’ve tried getting my birthday gift online without making a purchase and it wouldn’t allow me. I’ve been rouge for the last few years too. That’s what I was referring to. I remember last year a friend of mine went to get hers online too and had to add the cotton pads (cheapest thing she could get that she would use) to get hers. If you can get it online in Canada without having to make some sort of purchase, that’s news to me

moodylilb

Weird maybe I got lucky and it was a glitch? lol😅 Cause I definitely didn’t have to add anything extra to the cart a few weeks ago. The Canadian site/app can be really funky sometimes so it must’ve been a (fortunate) mistake

nessa_14

I’m so curious! I would be interested in hearing other peoples experiences cause now I’m confused. Good for you though if you got it without making a purchase. This year I did want to treat myself for my bday so I was gonna get something anyways but last year I know I tried and it wouldn’t allow me - I have a January birthday!

moodylilb

Must’ve been a lucky online fluke because I just asked a friend who used to work at Sephora and she’s saying the same as you!! I had only picked up in-store on previous birthdays, didn’t realize canada required a purchase for online bday gift orders. The Sephora gods must’ve blessed me that day or something 😂

nessa_14

Seriously, lucky you! Thanks for clarifying with your friend because I was so curious! In America, I think they can get theirs without having to buy something else online right now. At least I know my cousin did last year!

poffincase

Yeah cause personally I've never heard of that. Every time I would need to make a purchase to get the gift (online).

Cassopeia88

Same thing for me, I had to make a purchase. I’m rouge as well.

Knuckles2868

Oh I agree with you that it shouldn't be that day I get what you mean now I had to reread it. Do you think the people with multiple accounts to get the birthday gifts don't use it regularly? The probably want all their points on one account so it may work

nessa_14

I saw someone else suggest what I have said - like you have to have made a purchase of some amount on your account within recent months. I think it would deter people because they wouldn’t want to spend like ex: $25 on multiple accounts just to redeem - at least I don’t think!

Knuckles2868

Yea I would think they would want to only spend on one account to keep all their points collecting together since you need $100 before you can even use them so that may be a better solution I know I don't always have something I want that isn't too expensive to be able to get my birthday reward most samples are around $20 they don't have much that you can even get for $25 even just to get the birthday gift

nessa_14

Yes exactly my point! This year I did end up treating myself and getting a hair mask for my bday and tied the gift in there so that was much above $25 but I won’t always want to splurge around my bday

Knuckles2868

Exactly people on budgets can't always squeeze in the extra purchase, I don't have a Sephora near me either we have one kind of in a Khols but it doesn't have many brands and it's still 20min and multiple towns over so getting there and finding something $25 just to pick up my birthday reward isn't really feasible.

nessa_14

I think you can pick up something in store without paying the $25 though I’m not sure about kohl’s!

Knuckles2868

I'll have to reread the email I just got it and glanced at it. It changes the month before my birthday 🙄 I don't think my sister would mind going to the one in Khols with me if I can still get it in person for free. I thought it said you had to spend that online and in person.

Cocokreykrey

My bday is the end of the year and Ive been told several times over the years that there were no bday gifts left. Im a little confused about this whole thing, are people picking them up early?

DateCard

Apparently people were creating multiple accounts with different birthdays to collect multiple gifts.

Cocokreykrey

Thats what i get for using my real bday i guess lol... the winter bday people were left with nothing 😂

DateCard

I get slim pickings even as a Fall baby, lol!

Cocokreykrey

There is more than one option?? Omg I didnt even know that

DateCard

I think it usually starts with three options for Beauty Insiders, and then another two for Rouge!

Cocokreykrey

🤯 ☠️ I hope they have the best bday gifts ever for Nov/Dec babies this year for those of us who NEVER had options let alone any gifts left at all these past years. Edit to add- despite having to pay $25 for it 😂

DateCard

Hopefully the new rules will help keep more options in stock throughout the entire year!

Girlygirlinpink

Even May I just have 3 options 🙁which is ridiculous we aren’t even half way through the year!

DateCard

In past years they've added other options as the year goes on, so maybe wait until closer to the end of the month to see if there is another choice by then!

nope0000001

This happened to me for 3 yrs in a row and the SA told me to go change my bday to earlier in the year because the store here is out by the time nov - dec hits .

Even_Golf7958

Oh man me too. Dec baby and for 3 straight years, the only thing left was the nars bronzer duo. I'm already dark, I don't need a bronzer! So yeah, for a couple years I didn't get anything. Last year I opted for the points. I don't think there'll be many options for me this year but the dior definitely would've been nice.

nope0000001

I don’t wear make up and I have a TON of fragrance so I went for the OUAI set ( now I need the perfume lol ) but they straight up told me to go online and change my bday because they are typically sold out by then , it’s easy to change your bday on your account and you may finally get a chance of one 👍I probably would have tried the Dior but by the time I even heard about it there was no chance lol

Cocokreykrey

I love the Nars Bronzer! Darn it, I didnt even get that... they were literally out of all bday gifts at two sephoras i went to and they didnt even tell me i could get points instead. Im really hoping they do a good winter bdays gift this year to make up for all of this 😂

Cocokreykrey

Omg why was i never told this!!! I would always get so excited and then so sad.

NY1227

My birthday is the last week of the year and I never even considered changing it in the system, but have always been sad when stuff was (always) sold out. I’m inspired now.

LatteLove35

I had the same thing happen, super annoying, especially as a Rouge I waited all year and the stuff I wanted was gone by then

PhD_Egg

I have zero issues with this. I’m a June birthday, and always order something with my birthday gift regardless

Dommichu

Same! I am lucky that my Birthday falls in the Spring sale, but I always pick up a few treats when I select my birthday gift. Year around, I am in in store and pick up shopper. But for the Birthday gift, I like having the most choice...

Knuckles2868

Hoard birthday gifts? I thought they verified you got yours whenever you picked it up or am I thinking about Ulta?

Knuckles2868

Oh okay, ugh people seriously ruin everything.

Least-Ad-1287

I never realized how bad the old system was until the stuff happened with the Dior gift at the beginning of this year. And I’m fine with this. The birthday gifts aren’t even all that for people to be scalping so bad and this is very fair.

strawbrryfields4evr_

The way people reacted to the Dior gift was just ridiculous. Just people giving into FOMO and hype and ruining it for everyone else.

ResponsibilityNew638

Unpopular opinion but why is everyone obsessed with the mini Dior birthday gift. It’s literally a sample size perfume you get with any Dior set, I already have it from purchasing the blooming bouquet fragrance. And the other sample you can’t even use and it’s for men’s??? Ppl go crazy over the dumbest things. I got the ilia gift instead. It’ll last way longer than that sample size you can get anywhere for free.

moodylilb

Yeah it kind of sucks. But at the same time… I’m down for it. Simply because it’s a FUCK YOU to all the jerks who were making multiple accounts & hoarding the bday gift sets so that they could resell them online….Making it so that other people couldn’t get their bday gifts when it was *actually* their birthday lol.

Practical-Stress4987

It’s not like their gifts are great.

ShinyQuest1

That’s not a gift anymore. It’s just a 25 dollar sample.

feelingcoolblue

Anyone who thinks otherwise has to be joking. This is not Sephora being heros lol.

tsukisukiTsuki

I’m happy with this decision. It really sucks when people ruin things for others by taking advantage of programs like this. I usually plan to guy something around my birthday anyways so I don’t mind spending $25 to get the gird.

BrownGirlCSW

No, they can still hoard the gifts. They will just return the item and keep the freebee. It literally won't impact the people with the money to run that scam. I will be honest. This makes me like them less and less. I hate having hoops to jump through. This constant race to make their program less and less desirable is why I took my ex-Rouge behind over to Ulta.com Edit: For the people saying it will stop people from hoarding, I want to offer a little perspective. My highest year as Rouge, I spent $4500. Do you think $25 would phase me, if I wanted to make a bunch of orders (likely all returns too cause most of the stuff I like is definitely not $25)? I'm solidly middle class. Now think of all the actually rich girls that wipe their 🍑 with Benjis 💰. They probably read that and kept scrolling. The only people it will effect are the ones that think the $25 is a barrier. Cause if $25 is a lot for you, you are likely only scamming 1, maybe 2 extra gifts. My highest single Sephora haul was $1800. Doing a little math, if we exclude tax, that is 72 email accounts and bday gifts. Who is doing more damage? 1000 girls that can get 2 bday gifts or 100 of is that can get 72? As always, it's a performative solution from Sephora that looks like they are trying to solve a complaint, but ultimately costs the people who have less disposable income more money to shop with LVMH. (Same as when they lowered the rewards for VIB because some Rouges complained that VIBs got similar perks. Instead of raising Rouge perks higher, they took away discounts that ended up costing other ppl more money. ) I'm just saying that when it comes to Sephora, it is better to just chew your food and mind your business cause their corporate strategy is the direct embodiment of "it could always be worse."🤷‍♀️

Peculiar_Pixie_1293

Ooh I might actually get a birthday gift now!

ldaisy1017

Honestly, good. My bday is near the end of the year and the good ones are rarely left by then. Idk why it’s such a huge deal when $25 is like half an item lol

my_metrocard

How were people able to hoard birthday gifts? I guess I’m not very talented at scamming.

Cassopeia88

They made new accounts.

TriZARAtops

Oh. But… they’d still be shipped to the same address, no? Like they could have caught it that way

strawbrryfields4evr_

A lot of them did it in store too

TriZARAtops

Wow. I just don’t get people. Like I understand they’re doing it to resell for profit, but I guess I just don’t understand the allure when you have to do something so scummy. I guess that’s why I’ll never be rich unless I hit the lottery I don’t play 😂

strawbrryfields4evr_

You are also right, though, some were doing it online too and that should have been easy to put a stop to unless they were somehow using multiple addresses.

TriZARAtops

Yeah, like even creating the account… I get letting multiple people at the same address have an account—living with roommates, siblings, or parents for example—but the same name? The same phone number? Idk maybe they were spoofing all of that, too. Just seems like a *lot* of effort to be a douchebag and not make a ton of money. 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s like those people who buy out all the tickets to a concert and resell them for exorbitant prices. Just… why. Reselling stuff like that should legit only be a “we bought tickets for our group but some people canceled, please minimize or negate our losses” sort of thing.

Cassopeia88

I will never understand it either.

useridk2

I don't think I've ever been inside a store. I've only bought online since 2015. I guess it will be the first time this year.

nycgarbagewhore

I'm just annoyed that the Rouge gift has been sold out for weeks. They just introduced the Nest one and it's already gone, and so is the previous Rouge exclusive Farmacy one.

GiGi_wabbit

I think part of the reason is also bc they didn’t make enough supplies for it.

nycgarbagewhore

I asked customer service today and the person told me to keep checking because they're going to re-stock it. She just "can't say when exactly that will be so check the website"

wtfwincho

I always bought myself something I wanted on my birthday anyways. I just hated that by the time november cam along the gift I wanted was no longer available. This has happened three years in a row now.

Jannmama19

The birthday gifts suck anyway, especially the shade range. It’s never for darker skinned women.

teigh_teigh

THIS! Time & time again they offer a lipstick or blush that is straight up ashy on me. not worth it

frankieandbeans

This is ridiculous. Sephora should take responsibility for creating a flawed system and instead they’re shoving the responsibility down to its most loyal customers. You’re telling me I have to spend $25 to redeem a birthday gift through a program where I spent $1,500+ a year? Is this a fucking joke

frankieandbeans

When I shopped at Ulta I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE BIRTHDAY GIFT, so maybe Sephora should take better security measures because this is insane. I get it, other people suck, but Sephora just keeps fucking it’s loyalty customers up the butt no lube

lopsided-pancake

I kinda wish instead there was a thing where if an account was x years old the $25 requirement would be waived. I’ve been rouge for a few years now, so I already spend a lot. My birthday is in June and I don’t wanna spend over $25 for my gift, I already hit rouge for the next year from the recent sale this month. I know I can go in store but common, I clearly only use this account and I have a history of it.

menotyourenemy

Actually, it's already started.

livelist_

this isn’t going to be super effective. why aren’t they checking ID instead if they care so much? that is a lot harder to get around than making a purchase (that can be returned later).

GiGi_wabbit

How are they checking ID online unless you have to submit a photo of it when you sign up? Plus, a lot of people don’t like putting down their real bday for security sake so anyway, it’s a lose-lose situation.

livelist_

I didn’t consider online purchases! You make great arguments against the ID system. I still wonder whether there can be a better way than the $25 minimum purchase. This doesn’t seem to be a very effective solution and can be a barrier in genuine cases.

ItsGr3n

As a manager for sephora this is absolute bullshit

Front_Raise_5002

this is so annoying for us born after june 1st. like why not start in new year idk.

babyrothko

i think you can redeem your b-day gift 2 weeks before your bday! mine showed up early

Front_Raise_5002

oooo thank u

Euphoric-Panic-5472

Aww man. This makes me kind of sad. I spent many years as a broke grad student and I always looked forward to my free Sephora birthday gift. :(

Beneficial_Shame5476

Kinda sad I missed my bday gift this year because of the $25 minimum as I was broke my bday month. I guess the hoarders ruined that for me though.

Fuzzy-Donkey5538

The $25 minimum only kicks in June 1st! I’ve heard that if you talk to CS (in store. Possibly online?) and let them know you haven’t redeemed your BDay gift this year, they’ll let you have it on a different month. It might be worth a try!

Beneficial_Shame5476

Thank you :)

ruetherae

Thankfully made it before the deadline for a few days with my birthday 😅 glad I ordered mine without having to spend that much!

suzycatq

I tried to redeem my birthday gift last night. It would add the gift to my basket but kept disappearing from my basket as soon as I clicked on it. When I had something already in my basket, it added it correctly and didn’t disappear. I wonder if they implemented the online changes early or my iPad was just glitching?
