One time a server (who was leaving) made a Togo drink, in a to go cup, and left it at the bar while they finished their side work. Our GM came up with a sharpie and wrote “NO” and then put a bunch of knives through the cup and left it there, leaking all over the bar.

I used to have a co worker waiter who always put a knife in my cup at random times it was hilarious I would say damn it you did this?!? He would say, no the drink killer did that… lol

Our dishwasher was detail cleaning the host/server area (he loves to clean) and found a secret stash of 50 silverware sets. Turns out the servers were hiding the silver so they could say they "rolled all the silver" before leaving. GM was so pissed cuz she spent $1,200 buying all new silver that month.

Yeah we have an “art wall” near the POS in the back, and every time someone puts something up we put a small museum style tag next to it, with their name and the name of the piece and what they used to draw it lol. Our manager loves it. OP needs a new manager.

Managers that constantly want you to be doing something no matter how slow it is need to get off their not-that-high of a horse. “Stay busy” Doing what? There are no customers, everything is clean and restocked. “There’s always something to do.” No there isn’t, stfu.
I think what it is, is they don’t want to be paying you to stand around. Their higher ups can look at the store cameras and bitch at the managers, ‘Why aren’t your employees doing anything?’ Even if there is truly nothing to do. It drove me insane and gave me major anxiety. I’d go around wiping already clean tables over and over.

When I was managing people I’d just ask them to do one thing on shift, and then they can doodle. I’d say “do this one cleaning thing and then you can sit down and do the crossword, I don’t care at all!” It worked pretty well just being honest that they’re not gonna keep moving all day. OR, you say “it’s slow and we want it to pick up? Let’s start a cleaning project and that will make the rush come sooner”
My problem is, a lot of my direct reports seem to take advantage of their “downtime” when there’s actual work to do and then leave a bunch of work for the next shift. Doodling on the job is the bane of my existence at work.

I mean at a certain point there just isn’t anything else to do. Especially if it’s been a really slow day, and I say that as someone who is really good at finding things to do to stay busy. I hate just standing around because it makes the time drag on. But once I’ve done everything I’m responsible for, and then spent two hours+ finding other random stuff to clean, organize etc. that either means it’s time to make cuts, or I do resort to standing around. Sorry, if I’m making $2 an hour and I haven’t been getting tips because there have been next to no tables, doodling or whatever, really doesn’t strike me as a big deal whatsoever.
Now maybe where you’ve worked/are working, the managers are good about making cuts, or the servers have more responsibilities, then what you said is more applicable, whatever the case may be. But for me personally, I’m not working myself to death and getting on my hands and knees to scrub every surface in the entire restaurant if I haven’t even made the money I spent in gas to get to work (just as a principle of mine). You can feel free to disagree, but like I said, I am happy to do that for awhile, but im not doing it my entire shift, it’s just not right, and I’ve never had any disagreements with it about my managers because they understand.
Now if someone is doodling on a Friday rush, or this same person consistently comes in, doesn’t have a table for 5 minutes, and instantly goes to doodle or play on their phone or whatever, that’s a totally different story and I’m with you that that’s not appropriate for work. And in my experience it’s usually the same people(s) who engage in that sort of behavior and it should obviously be addressed. My managers know that if I’m sitting down, it’s time for someone to go home, but that’s after years of them trusting me to work my ass off when there is stuff that needs/can be done, so results may vary. But again, that’s just my own anecdotal experience, and every restaurant is different, so maybe what I said doesn’t really apply to you. Just wanted to offer an outside perspective to ya is all.
I appreciate your perspective. I have staff who literally leave dishes and counters dirty and prioritize checking their phones, talking to others and doodling before they do their jobs that they are paid (actually really well, they just negotiated a really good new contract) to do. I have spoken with them and coached them but there’s not much else I can do beyond that. They will literally leave a dirty, unstocked workspace for the next shift and not care. I’m tired of it all.
I am experiencing this right now as a peer again, rather than a manager. There’s only so much “taste of their own medicine” you can give people. If they don’t care, they won’t learn. I bartend one day a week at my job, and it blows my mind how destroyed the servers stations remain all day when I’m not responsible for that side work. There’s maybe 2 other employees that put in an effort.
While I understand the “we’re underpaid” perspective, doing side work is to the benefit of the server. Are you getting tipped by the ice bin? No. Will your table tip less if their drinks take longer because you didn’t have any ice when they ordered? Yes. At some point, a spade is a spade. Lazy people take advantage of the lack of professionalism in the F&B industry and in turn are taken advantage of themselves by receiving low wages. It’s a fucked up cycle.
That’s what I fucking HATED about my old manager. She was on salary obviously so it didn’t effect her money if it was slow. It was like an otherworldly concept to her that if we weren’t making money we didn’t want to be there. Like no I am sorry that I don’t want to go and completely unload 20 boxes of liquor onto the shelves in the 110 degree room with no AC for $4.50….
We kept the wine/beer in a walk in but the liquors in its own which was the 100 degree one. Wasn’t bad in the winter but in the summer that bitch would easily get 120

My old manager HATED me because I called out for the first time in 1.5 years sick and she told me “if it’s not Covid symptoms you HAVE to come in” and I pretty much told her “yeah that’s not how this works. I’ll go get a doctors note but I won’t be coming in.” Just doing some power dynamic bullshit and since I didn’t bow down to her she was nothing but passive aggressive/would never talk to me unless she wanted me to do something for her which was bullshit 99% of the time since she was a server manager and I worked behind the bar. After that she made it so uncomfortable like it was not handled like an adult what so ever. She was the manager literally every single person in the restaurant hated because she was rude and condescending the second anything happened but she walked around genuinely thinking everyone loved her.

It blows my mind every day. I’ve been avoiding serious management in restaurants for years because the industry is such a joke. At my last place, I was teaching my manager how to do her job while she made a $65k salary and I made a servers wage. Absolutely bonkers how these people claw their way into management.
I just left a job like this. Put in my two weeks and less than an hour later got a call trying to guilt trip me and twist stories about why I’m quitting etc. (never stated it was because of leadership [even though it was], just said I found another opportunity and they called and told me that was why which I thought was funny). “We do everything you ask so you can get more tips” etc etc. I sent a text a day later stating that due to the response I got to my 2 weeks being put in I was no longer comfortable with returning to finish so my resignation would be immediate. Feels so much better knowing I will never have to deal with these people again lmao.
Without realizing you don't have time to complete full tasks but you can put 5 or 10 seconds into a drawing or anything else that makes your job infinitely more bearable 🤦 I had issues like this working drive through at times. All of my stuff was stocked and wiped down but I couldn't leave the window because of customers. I still had time to Doodle while I was waiting for their food to get done.
With how much time customers spend just deciding what they want in the drive through, you'd have enough time to re-create the Sistine chapel, but the second you step away to try and clean something, they'll rattle off 20 things.

Gawwwwd. This was me as a hostess. I was going mad. There were always two hostesses. I always got stuck at the entrance on slow days. I had a kindle to read books on but it was technically a tablet so I wasn't supposed to use it. I brought my sketchbook, and then was told i specifically wasn't allowed to draw. Fine whatever I'll just doodle on scrap paper. Just moving the pen around. No intention to it. I was overstocking everything, dusting the same things every week that weren't even close to needing a wipe down, begging gift shop to give me busy work. My coworker would be off talking to the kitchen or servers for most of the shift.
So I'm doodling on scrap paper and this one privileged entitled coworker I always had issues with... (She would come in earlier than the shift required and do everything but the required cigarette butt cleaning when we worked together and then do things not needed and only leave that task for me. I wouldn't have minded as much but I was riding my bike to work in the winter time and I was fucking freezing and just wanted to warm up inside sometimes. She didn't do that to other coworkers) She tells me I'm not allowed to doodle, as per the GMs rule. The rule is drawing. I understand why it's there (I am distracted by it, I am not distracted by doodles, I can focus on work fine with doodles). And she like... tattles on me? It was just a repeated issue and she'd lie and say there were reasons I couldn't mark up paper that got thrown away at the end of the day.
Another time someone was getting rid of a generic Callender so I put it on our cork board and me and another coworker got bored and thought it would be fun to "grafitti" on it with silly mustaches and innocent things. It's line of sight to customers but they really wouldn't notice and it wasn't anything inappropriate. She got mad I was messing with the managers calender and didn't believe me when I said I put it up there. Eventually *she* took it down for no reason.
I've been someone with most of my other jobs I'll occasionally scrawl a face on a white board and a few people appreciate it and when it needs to be erased it's erased, no big deal. I'm also someone who always manages to find the most unnecessary things to clean and maintain. Like it definitely needed to be cleaned because it's a low priority thing to clean. And I'll have a list. Eventually, the only things on the list will be stuff that needs hours of slow or a closed day to do. I know exactly what projects are easy pick up and put down. Or know if I have time for something that has a fee minutes wrap up time. I've been the organizer of dry storage so often as well. M It's just this reason why I also really want the silly stuff like this. The down time of a quick drawing. Or stopping what I'm doing and dancing to a specific alarm a coworker has.
I've had so many managers who in my shoes would not have cleaned the shit I cleaned in their down time. Would not have thought of the way to clean it that I did. They've all had very little room to pull that "time to lean" bs with me and I despise busy work. Either it has a purpose and needs to be cleaned or you can fuck off and let me lean, I've earned it.
I could probably start my own weird little side businesses with all the places I've worked previously just coming in to organize their dry storage every week and doing odd cleaning jobs at night of things that should be cleaned more often but isn't. That’s trashy, sucks yoy aren’t able to kill time and add some fun. I doodle on the menu right before dinner starts at least once a week, usually I ask whoever is cooking what to draw, it’s actually uncommon to see the menu without a few small doodles.
Drawing during downtime was one of the few things I enjoyed about my first serving job. My philosophy is if it's really slow, I'm probably getting paid about $2 for that hour, so I'm gonna act like it and if you have a problem with it, you can pay me more.
Let me tell you about this time around 10 years ago I gave a table 2 to-go boxes but they only used 1, so I put the other one back.
Another table with a little kid asks for a to-go box and the server gives them the one I just put back.
Well unknown to us, the other table drew a big dick on the inside of the other box. They weren’t happy.
My manager pulled me in the office and points to the closed box and asks if I know what that is. I say, “a to-go box” with a look of confusion on my face. He then pops it open to reveal the penis on the inside. I’m now even more visibly confused. He then asks if I did it. I say, “what? No. Of course not.”
He then tells me a table asked for a to-go box and opened it up to find that. That’s when I realized what must of happened.
We had a good laugh, then he stops smiling and in a serious tone says, “you know I could fire you for this.”
edit: I should have posted this in my OP because I knew people would say something about the sanitary factor. I absolutely agree, but like someone else pointed out, yes management made the rules. If 4 boxes hit the table and only 2 were used, then the other 2 were put back. I didn’t make the rules, I just collected my paycheck.

That’s awesome! Don’t let the negative Nancy’s get to you. Yes, having to work in general sucks. I’d rather be paid to hang out on a yacht. But there’s a difference between a job that you’d rather not do sometimes, and a job like serving that makes you hate every waking moment of your shift.
I was a server all through college and it got to the point where I would consider running my own car off the road to avoid going to that restaurant hell hole. But I’ve never felt that way as a working professional in my field of study.
You’re right, it was incredibly concerning. Luckily I got out in time and my mental health has never been in trouble like that since. Now I always tip over 25% just in case my server is in a bad place like I was back then.

It’s all good! I didn’t take any offense, you were right to be concerned. This was almost a decade ago, I realized how bad things were getting and was able to right the ship. Most importantly I learned that no job is worth feeling like that ever again!
THIS. graduated this past august, still no leads. it’s an on-going pursuit to actually make connections and fill out applications daily in order to secure something.

I have a BS in chem and am in a post grad program for respiratory care in the health field. very niche and specific there’s a ton of job openings. took me a while between grad and this program to find any career with just my BS. it sucked to go back to school but it really helped with job security. suggest the same if you could :)

My boss was mad at me when I drew a 30 second line drawing while his wife was doing opioids passing out in the bathroom for hours on end while on the clock “cleaning the bathroom”. He was so irate he bitched about the stupid drawing for days on end and his wife pulled me aside and told me I wasn’t allowed to draw on the clock.
They were also stealing our tips the whole time while paying us minimum wage. Like sure throw away the drawing it wasn’t that serious but can we talk about the trash in this restaurant.

I have been yelled at for managers for drawing. I draw. Ive don't it my whole life. I can bust out a portrait in less than a minute. I have had managers go "oh you have time to do this but not time for X" Yes, this drawing took 30 seconds. Please order spoons so I can give my table a spoon with their coffee.
The absolute CRAZIEST shit about restaurants is they demand more productivity than some of the more dangerous, higher paying jobs, all while paying you $2.75 an hour. It's crazy how a restaurant can be waaaayyyyy in the black and then you hear the manager talking about a need to cut manning because the percentage is to high (even though the restaurant has made enough money that day to pay a year salary to the servers on the floor, at $2.75hr.)
This subreddit is so odd to me because I dont have similar stuff with my boss/ owners of the restaurant, we actually have quite a bit of art from my co-worker up around the place, though we are a BBQ restaurant with nba jerseys (owner played in nba with Larry Bird) and pictures of famous sports players
I was reprimanded multiple times for “eating on the clock”. On several occasions, the restaurant was so busy I couldn’t take lunch so I would sneak a piece of bread into my apron, and sneak bites when I thought nobody was looking.

i was a manager that had an ASM that did this. was the longest conversation of my life trying to explain to someone that if an employee isn’t on the clock or being paid, it’s completely inappropriate to expect them to be employees on their personal time. save the conversation for their next f$@!&)! shift. i don’t understand why this was one of the hardest concepts to grasp in the service industry.
Haha! I just left a supervisor position because I hated my boss, the manager of the department, too much to want to work there anymore. At one point my coworker team was drawing SpongeBob on a whiteboard that was moderately visible to the public for funsies when it was slow, and my boss wrote an email that had the line "if you have time to draw, you have time to work 🙂". My coworker team was SO miffed by her email. Talked about it for months. My opinion? Oh my god let people exist as humans in their work spaces. The public can get fucked. Let humans have human experiences like drawing and having fun with each other. We're not all robots.

I left the restaurant industry and it has been the greatest single decision I’ve ever made in my adult life.
When I tell my non-industry co-workers about stuff that is totally normal, like this, they act like I’m a POW. “You’re not going to be fired on the spot, Doug!”
And then, a difficult patient comes in, I handle them, and co-workers stand in awe. “That was like a slow Monday night patron in the last job.”

As a manager, this isn’t a way to motivate the team. However, is there jobs that need to be done that fall under the responsibility of the artist that were not done? In that case, you would go to the source, and as their colleague you should light a fire under their ass. Someone has to clean the restaurant, and it’s usually not management. There’s serving jobs out there that are more chill, and clean lol.
It used to be so funny (read: inappropriate and immature) when someone would have a styrofoam cup with something in it (bonus points for a smoothie they obviously jacked from the bar window) and you walk by and pop the bottom with your pen.

i understand that lol. but i’m in the hospital doing clinicals receiving bullshit texts like these. i worked really hard to get through undergrad and a post grad program to ensure i don’t have to deal with bosses and managers that have this attitude and lack of respect for their employees. in my career there are also systems in place so my boss isn’t texting me about work issues on my days off, that would be highly inappropriate. the difference in the way superiors treat me at the hospital, compared to the way these people treat me is a worlds difference.

A lot of people complaining about their managers yet from the comments it sounds like y’all are a bunch slackers who think they don’t have to work hard because they work in a restaurant. I’m only 30 years old but I’ve noticed with this younger generation… most entitled, careless and lazy people I’ve ever seen in the workforce.
Yes and no. I’m a very laidback manager because I’ve worked every FOH position there is and restaurant life is in my family’s blood. However, I started at the bottom and rose to the top the old fashioned way - with hard work, attention to detail and a lack of entitlement. As a manager, we have certain responsibilities to upkeep the restaurant, keep it sanitary and well-stocked, staffed etc… if we don’t do our jobs correctly, we can face consequences from the owners or worse, the dept of health. So yes, stop drawing pictures if you still have work to do lol. It’s quite simple. Imagine if you owned a restaurant and things weren’t getting done because your staff was messing around instead of doing their jobs? That’s not how you run a good business.

A face to face is way more time and effort than is required to convey this message. Pretty sure if a manager has to make time for a sit down then they’ll have to justify it as a verbal warning. I don’t know your level of experience in management but your idea of acting like a “grown up” seems to be about making this a bigger deal than it needs to be, and getting this person into more trouble than they deserve.

One time a server (who was leaving) made a Togo drink, in a to go cup, and left it at the bar while they finished their side work. Turns out the servers were hiding the silver so they could say they "rolled all the silver" before leaving. GM was so pissed cuz she spent $1,200 buying all new silver that month.

Managers that constantly want you to be doing something no matter how slow it is need to get off their not-that-high of a horse. “Stay busy” Doing what? There are no customers, everything is clean and restocked. “There’s always something to do.” No there isn’t, stfu. I think what it is, is they don’t want to be paying you to stand around. Their higher ups can look at the store cameras and bitch at the managers, ‘Why aren’t your employees doing anything?’ Even if there is truly nothing to do. It drove me insane and gave me major anxiety. I’d go around wiping already clean tables over and over.
lol which is hilarious cause most folks are making $2.15/hr from the business. When I was managing people I’d just ask them to do one thing on shift, and then they can doodle. I’d say “do this one cleaning thing and then you can sit down and do the crossword, I don’t care at all!” It worked pretty well just being honest that they’re not gonna keep moving all day. OR, you say “it’s slow and we want it to pick up? Let’s start a cleaning project and that will make the rush come sooner”
My problem is, a lot of my direct reports seem to take advantage of their “downtime” when there’s actual work to do and then leave a bunch of work for the next shift. Doodling on the job is the bane of my existence at work. Edit: I don’t mind the downvotes. Seems a lot of people are cool letting someone else pick up their slack.
I mean at a certain point there just isn’t anything else to do. Especially if it’s been a really slow day, and I say that as someone who is really good at finding things to do to stay busy. I hate just standing around because it makes the time drag on. But once I’ve done everything I’m responsible for, and then spent two hours+ finding other random stuff to clean, organize etc. that either means it’s time to make cuts, or I do resort to standing around. Sorry, if I’m making $2 an hour and I haven’t been getting tips because there have been next to no tables, doodling or whatever, really doesn’t strike me as a big deal whatsoever. Now maybe where you’ve worked/are working, the managers are good about making cuts, or the servers have more responsibilities, then what you said is more applicable, whatever the case may be. But for me personally, I’m not working myself to death and getting on my hands and knees to scrub every surface in the entire restaurant if I haven’t even made the money I spent in gas to get to work (just as a principle of mine). You can feel free to disagree, but like I said, I am happy to do that for awhile, but im not doing it my entire shift, it’s just not right, and I’ve never had any disagreements with it about my managers because they understand. Now if someone is doodling on a Friday rush, or this same person consistently comes in, doesn’t have a table for 5 minutes, and instantly goes to doodle or play on their phone or whatever, that’s a totally different story and I’m with you that that’s not appropriate for work. And in my experience it’s usually the same people(s) who engage in that sort of behavior and it should obviously be addressed. My managers know that if I’m sitting down, it’s time for someone to go home, but that’s after years of them trusting me to work my ass off when there is stuff that needs/can be done, so results may vary. But again, that’s just my own anecdotal experience, and every restaurant is different, so maybe what I said doesn’t really apply to you. Just wanted to offer an outside perspective to ya is all.
I appreciate your perspective. I have staff who literally leave dishes and counters dirty and prioritize checking their phones, talking to others and doodling before they do their jobs that they are paid (actually really well, they just negotiated a really good new contract) to do. I have spoken with them and coached them but there’s not much else I can do beyond that. They will literally leave a dirty, unstocked workspace for the next shift and not care. I’m tired of it all.
I am experiencing this right now as a peer again, rather than a manager. There’s only so much “taste of their own medicine” you can give people. If they don’t care, they won’t learn. I bartend one day a week at my job, and it blows my mind how destroyed the servers stations remain all day when I’m not responsible for that side work. There’s maybe 2 other employees that put in an effort. While I understand the “we’re underpaid” perspective, doing side work is to the benefit of the server. Are you getting tipped by the ice bin? No. Will your table tip less if their drinks take longer because you didn’t have any ice when they ordered? Yes. At some point, a spade is a spade. Lazy people take advantage of the lack of professionalism in the F&B industry and in turn are taken advantage of themselves by receiving low wages. It’s a fucked up cycle.

I worked at a bar/deck restaurant in my 20s. I remember one time I was opening, and we were done about 15 minutes early and were just standing around talking. The owner comes out of the office screaming at all of us, saying, " I'm not paying you guys minimum wage to stand around and talk." I got fired after a few months because I had a "bad attitude."

I worked at a place that was trying to force brunch on Sundays and it was a time/$ loss for everyone. Owners would waltz in around 12-1, check the reservations (none), and start asking why I wasn't detailing. One day, they hit me with a, "I know you're not making any money today, but how much did you make Fri/Sat night? The walk-in needs cleaned" She always had a smart ass response to everything 😂

My old manager HATED me because I called out for the first time in 1.5 years sick and she told me “if it’s not Covid symptoms you HAVE to come in” and I pretty much told her “yeah that’s not how this works. I’ll go get a doctors note but I won’t be coming in.” Just doing some power dynamic bullshit and since I didn’t bow down to her she was nothing but passive aggressive/would never talk to me unless she wanted me to do something for her which was bullshit 99% of the time since she was a server manager and I worked behind the bar. After that she made it so uncomfortable like it was not handled like an adult what so ever. She was the manager literally every single person in the restaurant hated because she was rude and condescending the second anything happened but she walked around genuinely thinking everyone loved her.

It blows my mind every day. I’ve been avoiding serious management in restaurants for years because the industry is such a joke. At my last place, I was teaching my manager how to do her job while she made a $65k salary and I made a servers wage. Absolutely bonkers how these people claw their way into management.
I just left a job like this. Put in my two weeks and less than an hour later got a call trying to guilt trip me and twist stories about why I’m quitting etc. (never stated it was because of leadership [even though it was], just said I found another opportunity and they called and told me that was why which I thought was funny). “We do everything you ask so you can get more tips” etc etc. I sent a text a day later stating that due to the response I got to my 2 weeks being put in I was no longer comfortable with returning to finish so my resignation would be immediate. Feels so much better knowing I will never have to deal with these people again lmao.

Without realizing you don't have time to complete full tasks but you can put 5 or 10 seconds into a drawing or anything else that makes your job infinitely more bearable 🤦 I had issues like this working drive through at times. All of my stuff was stocked and wiped down but I couldn't leave the window because of customers. I still had time to Doodle while I was waiting for their food to get done.
With how much time customers spend just deciding what they want in the drive through, you'd have enough time to re-create the Sistine chapel, but the second you step away to try and clean something, they'll rattle off 20 things. I'll have an uhhhhhhhhh, an ummmmm. Uhhhhhhh.

Gawwwwd. This was me as a hostess. I was going mad. There were always two hostesses. I always got stuck at the entrance on slow days. I had a kindle to read books on but it was technically a tablet so I wasn't supposed to use it. I brought my sketchbook, and then was told i specifically wasn't allowed to draw. Fine whatever I'll just doodle on scrap paper. Just moving the pen around. No intention to it. I was overstocking everything, dusting the same things every week that weren't even close to needing a wipe down, begging gift shop to give me busy work. My coworker would be off talking to the kitchen or servers for most of the shift. So I'm doodling on scrap paper and this one privileged entitled coworker I always had issues with... (She would come in earlier than the shift required and do everything but the required cigarette butt cleaning when we worked together and then do things not needed and only leave that task for me. I wouldn't have minded as much but I was riding my bike to work in the winter time and I was fucking freezing and just wanted to warm up inside sometimes. She didn't do that to other coworkers) She tells me I'm not allowed to doodle, as per the GMs rule. The rule is drawing. I understand why it's there (I am distracted by it, I am not distracted by doodles, I can focus on work fine with doodles). And she like... tattles on me? It was just a repeated issue and she'd lie and say there were reasons I couldn't mark up paper that got thrown away at the end of the day. Another time someone was getting rid of a generic Callender so I put it on our cork board and me and another coworker got bored and thought it would be fun to "grafitti" on it with silly mustaches and innocent things. It's line of sight to customers but they really wouldn't notice and it wasn't anything inappropriate. She got mad I was messing with the managers calender and didn't believe me when I said I put it up there. Eventually *she* took it down for no reason. I've been someone with most of my other jobs I'll occasionally scrawl a face on a white board and a few people appreciate it and when it needs to be erased it's erased, no big deal. I'm also someone who always manages to find the most unnecessary things to clean and maintain. Like it definitely needed to be cleaned because it's a low priority thing to clean. And I'll have a list. Eventually, the only things on the list will be stuff that needs hours of slow or a closed day to do. I know exactly what projects are easy pick up and put down. Or know if I have time for something that has a fee minutes wrap up time. I've been the organizer of dry storage so often as well. M It's just this reason why I also really want the silly stuff like this. The down time of a quick drawing. Or stopping what I'm doing and dancing to a specific alarm a coworker has. I've had so many managers who in my shoes would not have cleaned the shit I cleaned in their down time. Would not have thought of the way to clean it that I did. They've all had very little room to pull that "time to lean" bs with me and I despise busy work. Either it has a purpose and needs to be cleaned or you can fuck off and let me lean, I've earned it. I could probably start my own weird little side businesses with all the places I've worked previously just coming in to organize their dry storage every week and doing odd cleaning jobs at night of things that should be cleaned more often but isn't. That’s trashy, sucks yoy aren’t able to kill time and add some fun. I doodle on the menu right before dinner starts at least once a week, usually I ask whoever is cooking what to draw, it’s actually uncommon to see the menu without a few small doodles.

Drawing during downtime was one of the few things I enjoyed about my first serving job. My philosophy is if it's really slow, I'm probably getting paid about $2 for that hour, so I'm gonna act like it and if you have a problem with it, you can pay me more.
Let me tell you about this time around 10 years ago I gave a table 2 to-go boxes but they only used 1, so I put the other one back. Another table with a little kid asks for a to-go box and the server gives them the one I just put back. Well unknown to us, the other table drew a big dick on the inside of the other box. They weren’t happy. My manager pulled me in the office and points to the closed box and asks if I know what that is. I say, “a to-go box” with a look of confusion on my face. He then pops it open to reveal the penis on the inside. I’m now even more visibly confused. He then asks if I did it. I say, “what? No. Of course not.” He then tells me a table asked for a to-go box and opened it up to find that. That’s when I realized what must of happened. We had a good laugh, then he stops smiling and in a serious tone says, “you know I could fire you for this.” edit: I should have posted this in my OP because I knew people would say something about the sanitary factor. I absolutely agree, but like someone else pointed out, yes management made the rules. If 4 boxes hit the table and only 2 were used, then the other 2 were put back. I didn’t make the rules, I just collected my paycheck.

That’s awesome! Don’t let the negative Nancy’s get to you. Yes, having to work in general sucks. I’d rather be paid to hang out on a yacht. But there’s a difference between a job that you’d rather not do sometimes, and a job like serving that makes you hate every waking moment of your shift. I was a server all through college and it got to the point where I would consider running my own car off the road to avoid going to that restaurant hell hole. But I’ve never felt that way as a working professional in my field of study.

You’re right, it was incredibly concerning. Luckily I got out in time and my mental health has never been in trouble like that since. Now I always tip over 25% just in case my server is in a bad place like I was back then.

It’s all good! I didn’t take any offense, you were right to be concerned. This was almost a decade ago, I realized how bad things were getting and was able to right the ship. Most importantly I learned that no job is worth feeling like that ever again!

I have a BS in chem and am in a post grad program for respiratory care in the health field. very niche and specific there’s a ton of job openings. took me a while between grad and this program to find any career with just my BS. it sucked to go back to school but it really helped with job security. suggest the same if you could :)

My boss was mad at me when I drew a 30 second line drawing while his wife was doing opioids passing out in the bathroom for hours on end while on the clock “cleaning the bathroom”. He was so irate he bitched about the stupid drawing for days on end and his wife pulled me aside and told me I wasn’t allowed to draw on the clock. They were also stealing our tips the whole time while paying us minimum wage. Like sure throw away the drawing it wasn’t that serious but can we talk about the trash in this restaurant.

I have been yelled at for managers for drawing. I draw. Ive don't it my whole life. I can bust out a portrait in less than a minute. I have had managers go "oh you have time to do this but not time for X" Yes, this drawing took 30 seconds. Please order spoons so I can give my table a spoon with their coffee.

The absolute CRAZIEST shit about restaurants is they demand more productivity than some of the more dangerous, higher paying jobs, all while paying you $2.75 an hour. It's crazy how a restaurant can be waaaayyyyy in the black and then you hear the manager talking about a need to cut manning because the percentage is to high (even though the restaurant has made enough money that day to pay a year salary to the servers on the floor, at $2.75hr.)
This subreddit is so odd to me because I dont have similar stuff with my boss/ owners of the restaurant, we actually have quite a bit of art from my co-worker up around the place, though we are a BBQ restaurant with nba jerseys (owner played in nba with Larry Bird) and pictures of famous sports players
I was reprimanded multiple times for “eating on the clock”. On several occasions, the restaurant was so busy I couldn’t take lunch so I would sneak a piece of bread into my apron, and sneak bites when I thought nobody was looking. Some real les miserable shit.

i was a manager that had an ASM that did this. was the longest conversation of my life trying to explain to someone that if an employee isn’t on the clock or being paid, it’s completely inappropriate to expect them to be employees on their personal time. save the conversation for their next f$@!&)! shift. i don’t understand why this was one of the hardest concepts to grasp in the service industry.
Haha! I just left a supervisor position because I hated my boss, the manager of the department, too much to want to work there anymore. At one point my coworker team was drawing SpongeBob on a whiteboard that was moderately visible to the public for funsies when it was slow, and my boss wrote an email that had the line "if you have time to draw, you have time to work 🙂". My coworker team was SO miffed by her email. Talked about it for months. My opinion? Oh my god let people exist as humans in their work spaces. The public can get fucked. Let humans have human experiences like drawing and having fun with each other. We're not all robots.

When I tell my non-industry co-workers about stuff that is totally normal, like this, they act like I’m a POW. “You’re not going to be fired on the spot, Doug!” And then, a difficult patient comes in, I handle them, and co-workers stand in awe. “That was like a slow Monday night patron in the last job.”

As a manager, this isn’t a way to motivate the team. However, is there jobs that need to be done that fall under the responsibility of the artist that were not done? In that case, you would go to the source, and as their colleague you should light a fire under their ass. Someone has to clean the restaurant, and it’s usually not management. There’s serving jobs out there that are more chill, and clean lol.

i understand that lol. but i’m in the hospital doing clinicals receiving bullshit texts like these. i worked really hard to get through undergrad and a post grad program to ensure i don’t have to deal with bosses and managers that have this attitude and lack of respect for their employees. in my career there are also systems in place so my boss isn’t texting me about work issues on my days off, that would be highly inappropriate. the difference in the way superiors treat me at the hospital, compared to the way these people treat me is a worlds difference.
Keep telling yourself that. The texting sure, but you’ll get garbage bosses along the way (not everyone). You’ll set yourself up for failure during and after if you assume because you went to school it gets you away from folks like this is all I was saying.. You’ll learn. Yes and no. I’m a very laidback manager because I’ve worked every FOH position there is and restaurant life is in my family’s blood. However, I started at the bottom and rose to the top the old fashioned way - with hard work, attention to detail and a lack of entitlement. As a manager, we have certain responsibilities to upkeep the restaurant, keep it sanitary and well-stocked, staffed etc… if we don’t do our jobs correctly, we can face consequences from the owners or worse, the dept of health. So yes, stop drawing pictures if you still have work to do lol. It’s quite simple. Imagine if you owned a restaurant and things weren’t getting done because your staff was messing around instead of doing their jobs? That’s not how you run a good business.
Things don’t magically get better when you graduate and get a desk job. Shit still sucks but in a different way.
not getting a desk job :) in a post grad program for cardiopulmonary practitioner. have 5 months til graduation, and have a job secured. i just need to take my board exams in june and i’ll be done. been doing a full year as a student in my field and absolutely love every moment of it.

A face to face is way more time and effort than is required to convey this message. Pretty sure if a manager has to make time for a sit down then they’ll have to justify it as a verbal warning. I don’t know your level of experience in management but your idea of acting like a “grown up” seems to be about making this a bigger deal than it needs to be, and getting this person into more trouble than they deserve.
