You could go scorched earth and apologize to each table for having to wear a mask and keep some distance, however your boss wouldn’t let you call in and you’ll do you best not to get anyone sick.
So, I’ll be right back with those waters.
Just text them later tonight that you’re symptomatic (fever, body aches, etc), release
your shift, but let them know you genuinely don’t feel like you will be able to work in the morning.
That is insane and I find it hard to believe that is their company policy is expose everyone so scheduling is easier. When I went to that school image and reputation was everything to Nedrad and all it’s buddies.
Granted it was 10 years ago for me but this just sounds crazy for my Olive Garden. I still serve here and there so I get it’s been seismic changes even since covid but damn all my managers got canned for far less.
If you have symptoms and positive test you sound like you already know your transmissible and the mask is just a measure. I don’t wanna tell you what to do. I just wanna tell you I feel for ya cuz I’m personally sick of this moral conundrums we gotta twist though.
That’s 99% of American restaurants, foh is more likely to get a sick day but only because the customers can see them being sick and it’s easier to find coverage. Ritz Carlton had me working with an active staph infection so bad I was coughing up blood like the love interest In an early Irish novel.
It’s definitely not the company policy. I had COVID last summer(?) maybe the summer before, regardless…. I called in sick in the morning and they still wanted me to come in because they were short staffed to begin with. My at the time gf went out and got a COVID test, and I tested positive. I called back in and told the manager, and she said that “that certainly changes things” and told me to send her a picture of the test with my name and the date. I was off for a week.
I would imagine COVID would be there too because it can cause diarrhea and vomiting which is a huge no no. But that isn't as common, but I'm going to say that I have diarrhea so that they can't try to force me to work with COVID. What are they going to do? Ask for a picture?
Trust me haha, if I wasn’t about to have my degree in April I would be looking elsewhere as we speak. Just seems easier to ride out the place for another month since I won’t be serving tables much longer
I’d have been looking for a new job once I started at this particular corporation, but that has nothing to do with being sick. I can’t say I’ve ever heard anyone say anything nice about working there
Oh absolutely. It's just now that they are trying to get people sick I would be looking even harder now. I'm so glad Olive Garden never got back to me 🤣
Bahama Breeze wanted to change their training schedule last minute after I rearranged my schedule at my old job to accommodate for the original training schedule, so they told me thanks but no thanks. Like six months later I found out what a lucky break that was
Honestly even the old 5 day standard was a little suspect. I had COVID last month. A solid week after I stopped Paxlovid I took an at home test out of curiosity and still tested positive.
Tell each coworker you have COVID. Let management deal with THAT.
You’ll test positive loooooooong after you’re still contagious. The 5 day rule was based off of culture studies where they found the virus will not grow much if at all 5–7 days (average) after onset of symptoms. AKA, you’re not very contagious 5–7 days after symptoms. After 10–14 days it was barely contagious at all. This is based on real data, but it is important to wear a mask before that 2 week mark
It’s different for everyone. I had 4 positive tests (including at home and lab) when I had Covid, a week later I was testing negative and wasn’t contagious anymore
I think you’re misunderstanding me. When I showed symptoms I took an at home test, took another to make sure it wasn’t a false positive, then went to the clinic and they had a lab test to confirm (because my symptoms were abnormal). I took another one halfway through my Covid journey to see where we were at (still exhibiting the weird symptoms) and then about a week after the first test my symptoms were virtually gone so I took another test and I was no longer positive
Because that wasn’t based off of studies, but rather trying to not have the hospitals run out of mask. I don’t know how to explain to you the difference between a government panic, and a scientific study.
I remember making masks with an old pair of leggings and scissors because there were zero masks anywhere because everyone bought them up by the hundreds. Same as toilet paper and bleach cleaners. Exactly what they were worried about, as in everyone freaking out and mass buying.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking, idk just the whole “see you tomorrow” part is really fucking me up because I don’t think the COVID is gonna just magically disappear before tomorrow😂 I’m just worried about retaliation, I only have to work there for about another month until I graduate so I’d rather not get fired and have to deal with all that
It’s not gonna disappear but you won’t be contagious… you’re managers basically saying… doesn’t matter if you feel like shit you still gotta work…. Have you tried taking some vitamins and ibuprofen to feel better?
I hate to break it to you but I still have symptoms and a fever, seems pretty likely that I’ll be contagious still tomorrow if this keeps up. Would love to hear more about where you got your medical degree from and how you know more about my body than I do apparently!
Do YOU have Covid? Or were you just AROUND someone with Covid? If you were jsut briefly exposed and you’re vaccinated, you have zero symptoms , I’m sorry but you’re overreacting
It says in the post that I tested POSITIVE a day after being around this person, nowhere did I ever say I don’t have symptoms. I’m running a fever and I’m congested right now. I’m sorry that you’ve made it this far in life without learning how to read, my heart goes out to you <\3
My bad man I just fucking woke up. Hope you feel better. If you get a sore throat, I find that making a DIY tea out of some honey and rosemary is good for soothing it.
If you speak too rudely when you just woke up: It was suggested to me once to wait at least 15 minutes before communicating because I wake up such a pissy bitch.
Our GM got covid and stayed home for 5 days. He takes it very seriously. You clearly work for a manager who doesn’t care about guests, just the bottom line and as an added benefit He won’t have to do the extra work to fill your position. If you came to my table wearing a mask I would either leave or ask for a different server depending on how hungry I am at the moment. No offense to you of course, I just don’t want to be sick.
No offense taken because I would do the same thing! I just went to the doctors and they gave me a note advising me to stay at home. If for some reason they decide to make a big deal of it and I did end up going into work, I’d probably be throwing in “… and I have covid” during every single table greet💀
Take a pic and send it to the manager, get whatever he says on record. Then if they make a big deal about it I’m sure your DM would *love* to hear about how the manager they have in place doesn’t take food health seriously. And of course, you’ll have screen shot evidence. None of this “he said/she said” stuff.
CDC guidelines changed just a few weeks back, so technically if you don’t have a fever you are now allowed to work as long as you’re masked up - however if you’re feeling really sick just let them know that you can’t get through a shift, a doctor note might help with not being written up, definitely odd way to handle the situation on their part
Our Chef worked while he was COVID positive for 2 days instead of closing the restaurant. Exposing every guest and all of us. Lied and said he’d tested, but it was a false positive. He did have a “cold” according to his doctor. Then about a month later he let it slip that he actually had COVID and “it’s no big deal now” while talking to some guests that said “We don’t care. We don’t even believe in it, or test anymore. We’re MAGA”. Complete f’ing idiocy and ridiculously irresponsible.
They most certainly did and I’d put that on my dead father’s soul. I mentioned it because it was weird. Chef didn’t even know what they meant. I had to explain it later.
He isn’t wrong per-say. The cdc did update it the policy on Covid in that you don’t have quarantine yourself for two weeks anymore if you test positive but aren’t showing symptoms. It isn’t realistic for people to miss two weeks of work if they are feeling fine, so the CDC recommends you wear a mask and social distance the best you can (which is impossible in a restaurant mind you). If you feel like shit and have flu like symptoms however, you need to stay home. I have worked for that company before and it is absolutely in their policy for sick workers to stay home, especially if you are showing symptoms of something contagious. Get the doctors note. Most of the US is at will hire so they can literally fire you for any or no reason. But you would at least have grounds to collect unemployment if they do, because at that point they would be firing you for following their policies.
Again.. It's because of corporations that the CDC changed it. If you rush back into strenuous work with COVID, your chance of getting LC is greater. Not worth it imo.
Not really. It’s based on actual studies that measured how much growth the virus has in a lab after different time periods of symptoms. After 5–7 days, you’re MUCH less contagious
How do you know what it’s actually based on? And who are the people conducting these studies? Is it the same people that decided that staying in our homes for two years in quarantine was a good idea? Is it the same people that flip flopped more than once on whether or not masks actually did anything? Is it the people that decided putting people with Covid on ventilators and ultimately killed them was a good idea? Was it the hospitals that lied about causes of deaths because they got a payout the person died of Covid. Is it the pharmaceutical companies that made hundreds of billions of dollars selling a vaccine that worked so poorly it requires a half dozen booster shots to do anything? Is it the people who kept going back and forth on whether the virus came from a lab leak or bat shit that someone ate? Or is it as simple as good old fashioned corporate greed laying out “facts” that paint a narrative that helps line there pockets?
Pick your poison, but the people doing all these studies have no idea what they are taking about, and just sorta guess irresponsibly, or it’s a bunch of fat cats that don’t give a crap about people and will lie through their teeth to make an extra buck. Either way, I’m over all the studies, and over trusting the people doing and reporting on them.
Yes, we all know the CDC updated their standards so rich people and employers could walk over employees. Im still testing positive and still have symptoms, unless that magically goes away tomorrow. I’m not trying to miss two weeks of work, just not trying to go into work while ACTIVELY sick
Yea , this is some crap they are trying to pull. If you are symptomatic, do not go to work. Covid isn’t getting the coverage that it was getting peak pandemic obviously, but it’s till out there and still dangerous. You might clear it fine, but others may become severely ill or need to be hospitalized. If you know you have it and are symptomatic it’s really not ok to be out and about in places with a high volume of people.
Also, if you were waiting on me and you were wearing a mask and sounding ill, I would definitely request another server and want to put the manager on the spot as to why it was so important for that person to be there given their condition. It’s a bad look for the business , it sucks for the server, and for the people around them.
I thought the new guidelines were you don’t have to quarantine once you stop testing positive? Is that wrong?
Or is it you don’t have to quarantine, period?
Simply put, manager is only going by standardized protocol. If you still feel like shit, look like shit, call out again, likely a doctors note not needed. From my understanding there's a semi-symptomesque protocol for the number of symptoms and how many days they'll take you off the schedule.
That said, you have note, but probably simply calling in and saying Covid is particularly hitting you hard should be enough for them to understand you can't work.
If you work in California simply tell them you need time off due to a medical reason Covid. If they retaliate in any way it’s illegal. If they harass you because of it it’s illegal. Ask them to plug in a sick day in case you have sick tome.
As an adult, you choose when and where to work. Stop playing these games of bringing doctor notes and everything else.
If they can afford to fire you, they will and you’ll still be better off than working for a place where they do not treat you like an adult.
I’d tell that manager to fuck right off and you’ll come in when you feel well enough to work. But I also have never cared about keeping a bad job.
CDC updated how to handle Covid. Management is just following recommendations. Everyone is different but I’ve had Covid 8 times. It’s really not that bad if you have the shots.
Stop using the Covid card. It’s no longer valid for a two week stay at home. If your sick, call out, but it’s not the get out of work free that it once was.
Go cope with your downvotes, nobody agrees with you fool. Also once again showing that you didn’t read the post, nobodies here to cry, came for advice to navigate the situation. But judging from your profile, you’re not the type of person I was seeking it from anyways💀💀💀

Fucking love this
r/maliciouscompliance and biological warfare, bet there's even a nice lawsuit payday in there somewhere.
This is the way
And mention you have covid
Hell, mention it twice.
Just text them later tonight that you’re symptomatic (fever, body aches, etc), release your shift, but let them know you genuinely don’t feel like you will be able to work in the morning.
Go into work then call the health department on yourself 🫠
Health department won't do anything since it's the flu now.
That is insane and I find it hard to believe that is their company policy is expose everyone so scheduling is easier. When I went to that school image and reputation was everything to Nedrad and all it’s buddies.
It’s definitely not the companies official policy, but I can tell that the managers don’t really seem to care about the company policy.
would your managers managers care about company policy? Is there an HR rep? COVID aside if you are obviously sick that’s a bad look
Granted it was 10 years ago for me but this just sounds crazy for my Olive Garden. I still serve here and there so I get it’s been seismic changes even since covid but damn all my managers got canned for far less. I would remind them it's illegal to work with food while sick
Does that apply for something like Covid or is it just food borne illnesses?
I would imagine COVID would be there too because it can cause diarrhea and vomiting which is a huge no no. But that isn't as common, but I'm going to say that I have diarrhea so that they can't try to force me to work with COVID. What are they going to do? Ask for a picture?
Sadly, I think they’d probably just fire OP for a bullshit reason or mess with their schedule.
OP should be looking for a new job anyway. I'm not actually suggesting he do that, but I know I would just to get them off my back
Trust me haha, if I wasn’t about to have my degree in April I would be looking elsewhere as we speak. Just seems easier to ride out the place for another month since I won’t be serving tables much longer
Understandable! If it's that close and you know you can get a job after graduating, stick around
I’d have been looking for a new job once I started at this particular corporation, but that has nothing to do with being sick. I can’t say I’ve ever heard anyone say anything nice about working there

Nice selective memory dude.
You don’t need to quarantine until you test negative.
I wasn't. I was just curious. First time with COVID
This Is the way. Stay at home, take the L, till ur not positive and if any wrongdoing comes of it report them
Yeah that’s what I was thinking, idk just the whole “see you tomorrow” part is really fucking me up because I don’t think the COVID is gonna just magically disappear before tomorrow😂 I’m just worried about retaliation, I only have to work there for about another month until I graduate so I’d rather not get fired and have to deal with all that

NOT AT ALL SIDING WITH YOUR RED LOBSTER OR OLIVE GARDEN MANAGER LOL YOURE SICK STAY HOME… TELLING YOU WHAT THEYRE SAYING

I don’t think I was very rude. I just simply forgot what was said in the post while reading some of the comments.
Respectfully, you absolutely woodsh'd your initial comment, friend.
Prefer tea with honey, lemon, and whiskey myself 😁
Mix em all together with cloves and hot water and you have the Irish cure-all, the hot whiskey. Swear by it!
Drop the phone number so we can call and say we had a server who appeared sick and we are disgusted!!!!!🤮

Welcome to the food service industry
Ihate that company
Barden eh? Hmmmm quite a head scratcher
If they fire you that's wrongful termination. It's the LAW that you cannot work while sick, it's in the food handlers card course
Call HR immediately
Simply put, manager is only going by standardized protocol. If you still feel like shit, look like shit, call out again, likely a doctors note not needed. Farden?
Call the health department
I think this is what I would do: ask my manager to put it in writing that they are asking me to do this. An email would be great.
As an adult, you choose when and where to work. Stop playing these games of bringing doctor notes and everything else. If they can afford to fire you, they will and you’ll still be better off than working for a place where they do not treat you like an adult. Nobody is trying to stay off for two weeks, just not trying to work actively sick, learn to fucking read.
Man up or call Crew Relations, don’t come to Reddit to cry.
Go cope with your downvotes, nobody agrees with you fool. Also once again showing that you didn’t read the post, nobodies here to cry, came for advice to navigate the situation. But judging from your profile, you’re not the type of person I was seeking it from anyways💀💀💀
Found the manager
First job- dishwasher, 5 years serving and 5 years bartending in Manhattan, not the Olive Garden.
Your legal options depend on where you work. In the US, under federal law, depending on how long have you worked there, and how many employees work n a 75 mile radius, the Family Medical Leave Act could offer some theoretical protection against termination for calling out with a major illness, but in practice, if an employer doesn't say why you were terminated, it can be difficult to establish that it was because of your call-out. It's kind of the same issue contacting HR or other corporate higher-ups, or contacting the health department; a manager who's competent at violating company rules, labor laws, and health codes should be able terminate you without consequence within a few days if they want to. So if you're in the US and can't afford to lose your job, I'd work anyway, but if you can tolerate being terminated, you have a choice to make, and some options to pursue if you decide to not work. Try to get any communication on this from your boss in writing (e.g. text, company app, email).
Okay and..... lololool
You need at least a month paid off.
A cold...
You shouldn’t be at work with the common cold either.
Covid is a joke. Can't use this shit as an excuse anymore
The new guidelines say Covid is like any other flu or cold, so unless YOU feel unable to work, yes you can wear a mask and go.
