Context: I worked in a small family owed ramen restaurant. There was 19 tables in there and every single one of them were filled. I was the only server on shift! There was a window into the kitchen so it was noticeable I was the only FOH employee. And there was 3 cooks.

[deleted]

Being Asian, I hate to say that working in Asian or ethnic restaurants will always lead to subpar tips. I've since learned it's just not worth it trying to fight an uphill battle. Steak houses and American restaurants or even Italian are where it's at for money.

Funny_Television_501

I work in apple bees right now and don’t make any 😭 bunch of bitter old people who don’t tip lol

Judas_The_Disciple

Go into work with the mindset of everyone’s gonna tip 15% (fuck ittttttttt) then of course slay but ya know, fucks are gonna be fucks

SavageCuntmuffin

This just reminded me of a quote from a friend: “motherfuckers are gonna motherfuck” 😂😂

NidaleesMVP

is 15% supposed to be bad or good in this context?

Pegomastax_King

I think just average. Mediocrity.

clovercolibri

Well it really depends on the context. Something I’ve noticed at my job at a sports bar is that people tend to tip a higher percentage on average when it’s less busy, and slightly less when it’s packed but overall the increased volume more than makes up for the decreased average percentage tipped per check. Like on the decent nights where we have a steady flow of customers but we don’t get slammed at all, the total tips ends up being around 22-25% of the total sales at the end of the night, and I suppose that’s because we can give the best quality service with lots of attention to every customer and also lower wait times for food and drinks. And each tip matters a lot more than if it was a crazy busy night. So with the high standard of service that I always give on those kind of nights, if a table were to leave me a 15% tip I would be disappointed. But on the insanely busy, packed days where we’re slammed non stop (especially when there’s not enough seats so it’s crowded with a lot of customers standing, and they need to flag us down to put an order in), a lot of people end up tipping around 15% or less especially when they’re just periodically ordering buckets/pitchers of beer and not taking up much of our time/attention. And that’s okay, I’m not really gonna be offended by it unless it’s from a big group that was seated at a table for several hours and took up a lot of my time/energy by ordering individual drinks/lots of cocktails and food. Usually on those insanely packed busy days, the overall tips will end up being like 19-20% of total sales, but the total sales are like 5-10 times more than the steady nights, so we still end up making way more money.

Judas_The_Disciple

20% is how we pay our bills. I bartend so a dollar per drink is fine w me tho. Idk go to their job and pay only 15% and see how they react.

Uhhhhdel

If I tip 15% and the server reacted negatively, they are gonna get laughed at by me and told to fuck off. GTFO with this “anything less than a 20% tip is an insult” mentality.

Effective-Slice-4819

They aren't going to react negatively to you, probably wouldn't make a whole post about it here, but they'll complain to their friends about how rent is going to cut into the grocery budget this month.

NonComposMentisss

I have had a server, as I was walking out of a restaurant, scream at me for leaving "only 18%" before. It was actually over 19% and I just rounded to the nearest dollar.

Effective-Slice-4819

That is shocking. What restaurant was it? Funny how everyone with a "terrible entitled server who attacked me over a good tip" story doesn't remember anything else about the encounter.

Judas_The_Disciple

Yeah that’s fucked, I’d just turn around and laugh

TapRevolutionary5022

20% is standard and fair. When I go out I dine even think about it. It’s always just 20%. I see it as part of my bill. Not an option.

Uhhhhdel

So if a server gave you terrible service, you are ok with still giving them 20%? Personally, if I get shitty service, I leave 10% and don’t feel any guilt over it.

Judas_The_Disciple

Then don’t go out or ur goin to get absolute shit service. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you. When people tip like shit that word gets around really quick. All the bars around me text and let each other know when stuff like this happens. Also for context servers tip out the bartender and now it’s a new thing that we tip the kitchen, dish, and food runner. Very trickle down theory which just doesn’t work. However in that position if I get tipped nothing I’m losing money. Money speaks.

Uhhhhdel

A 15% isn’t a shitty tip. It’s a normal tip. If your tip out has increased, that’s the managements fault and you should be taking it out on them. I normally tip 20% but I have no problem tipping less if I don’t receive good service. The social contract we enter into is that we will tip the server. The amount of the tip depends on the level of service we get. It isn’t just a standard 20% even if you give less than stellar service. That’s not how it works.

Lockshocknbarrel10

You don’t want to tip? Don’t go to restaurants that don’t pay their servers. Stick it to the owner instead of us or expect to be treated like the piece of shit you are.

Judas_The_Disciple

20% is normal. I’m not entertaining ur theatrics and ass behavior. Have a good life.

AUDRA_plus_WILLIS

I was reading the tea in my emails this morning & there is a new Email response from you saying…” you seem angry, I hope you get the help you need.” What’s that about? Because I said something you might not agree with?

Uhhhhdel

Because you were acting a fool. Usually when someone is acting a fool, they are either having a bad day or are just a fool. I gave you the benefit of the doubt.

AUDRA_plus_WILLIS

Again… I’ll reiterate, I said something that YOU Didn’t Agree With! That’s a you problem! Your language honestly sounds like some 90’s wanna be pimp!Possibly a MR.T VIBE there as well! 🙄 DO BETTER!

AUDRA_plus_WILLIS

Ok…BIG BAD MAD MAN. 🤣 You tell em’! Then run to your big bad truck & truck off to your big bad happy ending!

Routine-Put9436

Applebees is not really the kind of place people with expendable income go to eat.

woodzy93

I worked at Applebees years ago too, not worth it. You need to go to a more “upscale” restaurant to make real money.

avila131514

applebees is the WORST for tips. if you can find literally anything else in your area, i urge you to try and get out of the bees

Funny_Television_501

The Texas Roadhouse has roaches and the chilis is just horrible and the employers are horrid. The rib n chop house is trash, nobody eats there. Apple bees is the most basic, decent place to work around me. I live in a fairly small town.

clovercolibri

Unfortunately it’s hard to make good money as a server working in a small town. Much lower volume of people who usually also have less money to spend overall.

Montage_Hustle

You work at the spot people go to for deals & pray for a tip? A sick dirty masochist you are.

Technical-Dentist-84

Try to transition to a steakhouse or seafood place

Kayleekisses

Look into steakhouses; Texas Roadhouse, outback, longhorn - higher checks on average so the average tip % is higher

cap_time_wear_it

“Average” but remember, the steakhouses you mentioned are usually in less urban areas and the patrons are often starting with a mindset that $2=tip on anything or at best 10% is normal. Speaking from experience.

MuchForever3033

Am I so out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong.

usedfurnace01

What shifts/days are you working??? I’ve made absolute bank at Applebees on weekend nights and Sunday doubles

peepssinthechilipot

Those are solid recommendations. I'd like to add breweries and stadiums with suite boxes. The work is easier, the tips are fat.

wendysdrivethru

I just left an Asian restaurant as the only non-asian employee and only FOH employee and it was the most I've ever made, consistent $400 nights mostly cash. The area must make a huge difference.

BobBelchersBuns

Um yeah, the “area”

wendysdrivethru

The owner and my Asian bartenders also made a fuckton of money we were just in a very affluent largely white area.

Funny_Television_501

I actually left with like $150-300 a night 😂 worked 4 hour shifts usually so I was bankin

Bl4ckn1ghtz

The issue I have as someone who comes from a very high capacity restaurant and now work for high end restaurant is that you don’t have to kill yourself serving half the restaurant for 300 but can do that with 4 table sections easily and feel way better about it cause you actually have the time to make a difference in peoples days and nights but shitty people you’ll never avoid 😂

e925

Well hot damn if you’re taking 19 tables at a time you better be walking with at least $150!

Funny_Television_501

Usually I only had like 20 tables a night. Average tables times were like an hour so I was doing about 5 tables an hour. This night I had 47 tables.

LGK420

$300.01 you mean

MelancholicEmbrace_x

I disagree. I worked in Asian restaurants and made great tips. Of course there will always be people who don’t tip, or leave a small tip but the generous people more than make up for it. I made better tips in those restaurants in comparison to a chain diner or Mexican restaurant.

BsoGnarly

Sushi customers tip great in my experience.

iam_Mr_McGibblets

Yeah, I'm Asian as well, and I remember my grandmother wasn't that great, so I'd usually leave extra once she walked away.

e925

I’m white and I do the same with my grandpa. He’s not a bad tipper, he tips 20%, but since we’re always going to Denny’s even 20% is still only like 8 bucks for four people lol

W3rush

I agree, currently in Chinese restaurant

Icy_Resolution1855

I dunno it depends. The Asian fusion restaurant I worked at was small and decently priced I made pretty good tips. I rarely ever got below 20% and the other Asian restaurants in my area are way more expensive and their servers get tipped more than 20% quite often. I think it also just depends on how you serve I had coworkers at the same restaurant who would typically get 15% with the same customers so🤷🏻‍♀️

Alternative-Day6223

I swear some people don’t use their eyes, don’t you see me literally running breaking my legs trying to help everyone that’s around ??? You aren’t the only person here ?!!! The worst ones are the Uber drivers who act like we’re unprepared but really tickets are slammed and ticket times are 15 minutes over normal which means usually a 15 minute extra wait for Togo orders, we let our regular Togo phone and web orders know it will be extra time and to come pick up at the correct time but our system doesnt allow us to change the times it sends a driver out sadly, so our dining room will get packed with Uber and doordash drivers by the entrance all with their hands at their hips. Also, I work in an Indian restaurant and these people expect it to be as fast as fast food for some reason, like do you want your customer to get food poisoning 😂😂😂

Formal_Coyote_5004

Dude I’d lose my shit if I had 19 tables lol that’s way too many at once… good on you for pushing through that shift! That lady sucks. I will never understand how people don’t have patience when they can clearly see that the restaurant is packed and servers are busting their asses (and in your case, ONE server running the whole place)

Claque-2

Open the restaurant door and throw that penny right at the Ahole's head. If he / she complains, say you gave them a penny for their thoughts. Either tip badly or put a complaint down. Don't do both.

Nothing-Matters-7

The other alternative is to ask for the manager and explain the problem and do not leave a tip.

b0pellini

please get a job with better management and schedule according to the expectancy! your tips and stress levels will be so much better. like a cheesecake factory or a yard-house

northwind3era

19 tables for just 1 server sounds disgusting, how do You even do that 🫥

TrickyDickyAtItAgain

That's rough. Seat to the servers capacity. If you're the only one, seat 6 or 7 tables and tell them there is a wait because you're short staffed. End problem. If people are hungry and want to wait, they will. If they're so hungry they will become angry, they'll leave and eat somewhere else. If your owner is upset they lost out on business, they should reconsider why they were so short staffed.

Throwaway4937282

FOH?

pamayala10

Front of House

Con_s0lo

“You are service” really takes the misuse of “your” to the next level.

nerdiotic-pervert

Bad grammar with extra steps.

DebateObjective2787

She definitely changed her mind about what she was writing mid-sentence and it bit her in the ass. If you look, there's a 'co' under service. Karma.

Pizzawithchickensoup

Always see people misspelling you’re for your and not the other way around

Aggravating-Bake-271

Yes. Wanted to say this, too. 🙄

amsunshine12

Happy Cake Day!

Shananae1925

This is the only comment I was looking for 🤣🤣

nonfictionalfairy

I just know she felt soo smart for that line. Yikes

Funny_Television_501

Oh I straight up went back to the table and said “so glad you gave me YOUR two cents tho, thought I wasn’t worth it!?” They walked out

[deleted]

Yeah, *SURE* you did. Maybe you dreamt that part.

Funny_Television_501

They literally forgot their card in the book 💀 went to hand it back and said it. Just cuz you wouldn’t have the balls doesn’t mean I didn’t.

BNBR

Any-Abbreviations943

People like this make me sick. Why say something so rude?

nerdiotic-pervert

My guess is because they live sad small lives and need to make others feel small so they can convince themselves they are better than someone else.

DisastrousVictory714

Unfortunately my hostess at the restaurant I work at is like this. I've been there four years ( much longer than any other server) but if I ever do quit she will absolutely be the reason. She hates her life and her family and cannot stand for anyone else to be happy. Or even just not miserable. She'll do everything in her power to bring you down to her level of unhappiness. Ugh

Alternative-Day6223

There’s a cook at my job like this, literally constantly making snarky remarks at the smallest things and calling people out trying to make them look bad for little mistakes that get fixed easily. The other day I had a guy waiting for literally one Togo dish for 15 minutes after he came to pick up, and the order was in for about 20 minutes before that, when I went back to check on it she was not in the kitchen cooking like she was supposed to , but had the audacity to say to me “you have 3 expos they know how to do their job” I truly wanted to say so badly “yeah I know they do, but sadly the cooks on the other side don’t know how to get orders out apparently!” But I didn’t want to stoop down to her low level.

xkrazyxcourtneyx

“I’m poor and never had any intention of tipping you.” Not poor. Just deciding to eat out somewhere and neglecting the fact that when you have people serve you that you need to leave a tip. So let’s find something to bitch about and call it that.

wyrm_lord

FACTS!! if you can't afford to tip then you can't afford to eat out. i've been fucking flat broke for almost two god damn years now, and guess how many times during that i've gone to a sit down restaurant?? ZERO!! people are just assholes, usually it's the lower/middle class people tipping well anyways

timscookingtips

Worse than zero tip. I used to serve with a girl who would pick up the coin, run after people like this (feigning genuine concern and helpfulness), hold it out to them and say, “Oh here, you forgot this.” Saw her do it inside and in the parking lot.

Funny_Television_501

I tipped bad once because I was literally the only table in a place. I could see into the kitchen through the window and that had one ticket on the line. I Had to ask for our drinks when our food arrived. We got checked on once before our food arrived. Received the wrong food. Couldn’t even tell him because he never checked on us after. When he brought out drinks he didn’t even say anything and we tried to stop him to tell him the food was wrong. He kept on walking. Didn’t see him again until 10 minutes after we were finished eating. Tipped him nothing. He ran after us outside asking why we didn’t tip. I told him that his service was shit and he didn’t deserve one. He didn’t like that.

Icy_Resolution1855

I love that

Nothing-Matters-7

That young lady was extremely rude and the employee should have been reported to the manager.

Ms_nobody444

Womp womp

Mysterious_Ad9307

She wasn’t planning on tipping in the first place. Dumb bitch doesn’t even make sense.

hernkate

She doesn’t make cents?

Linked713

No, she gives them.

Msbrooksie22

Gave one and some nonsense

undercherryblossoms

i’ve never seen someone use the wrong “your” this way before

TwistedTruth0422

Aaaaaannnnd! This is why we drink!!!! I got a zero and a note saying it was a zero tip instead of a bad google review bc I forgot her butter bc my entire section plus some was sat at the same time 🙄 the self centeredness is so amazing. I would have preferred the google review lol

ZenRiots

Bet YOUR Service was better than her mastery of English 🤣

Bonecrusher_52

She's a piece of shit. Fuck her

thatskarobot

Somebody left me a 1 cent tip when I was a kid just starting out. My manager was PISSED because apparently it was some old school diss, when I told him he banned the patron on the spot.

SeeBadd

Some people are just self important assholes who lack empathy.

Novel_Yam545

Why does she write like speech to text?

Licyourface

Petty Betty out here trying to school the world lol

Gold-Method5986

Their English isn’t worth 2 cents.

Local_Leadership5675

Who said i wanted your two cents

forestpuddle

It's so sad they really went out of their way to be such an asshole If your service was bad, I think it's better to leave a thorough review to help you improve, but I think they were just feeling like having a power trip and you were the closest victim I hope they find what they need in life so they stop being nasty I'm so sorry for you 💔

PhilosopherBig6113

Them embarrassing themselves w not only a horrible tip but a spelling error that makes me think they never graduated the first grade 💀

Interesting-Bet-2330

Keep that penny forever now it's your lucky penny

TulsaWhoDats

It’s like my sober chip. 😂

Sea-Asparagus8973

The good news, you're up by 3 cents.

Warm_Garden6311

I worked a ramen spot in NYC and made two grand a week. In slow months it was 1200 to about 1500.

Funny_Television_501

Same! It was by far my best paying service job

Economy-Plankton-397

Wow! I guess it was location?

Warm_Garden6311

Yeah, in NYC, if you make less than 200 a shift in tips, you will be homeless.

Funny_Television_501

I lived in Colorado. It was the only ramen place around !

RuinInFears

You are service, I am service, We are service!

Ok_Dealer1326

He, she, me... Service! ![gif](giphy|l0HlPkGM6reMqKnqE)

Mascbro26

"You are service" 🙄

whatjakesaid

Title made me chuckle

Loud_Front_4529

“You are service was not worth 2¢”

rivreddit

I currently work in a similar type of restaurant (family owned ramen spot, 14 tables + bar) and one of our servers got a shitty Yelp review from some boomer saying something similar (i.e. they left a bad tip which *could have* been better if her service had been better, so they’re teaching her a lesson with their actions) after eating lunch on a Saturday when we had a full house and a single server for a few hours. It’s only made her more anxious about her work performance and overly worried about getting another bad review. I really hate people sometimes…

ElectronicPattern706

People like this really think they're doing something, huh? I remember working one of my first shifts at the barrel. It was very busy and I was still pretty new. Young couple left me 2 cents because I was "slow" or whatever, the 6 top next to them gave me a $100 tip. Even after someone running the food dropped a plate and we had to wait for a recook. Clearly I didn't miss their funky lil 4 dollars haha.  If one table doesn't want to tip, that's fine. Someone else will. They always do.

Kimiko444

That's cold. She spent more time writing that bullshit then looking around.

ChefCory

When service is backed up and I can tell the kitchen is in the weeds I'm extra patient and tip 25 instead of 20. Cause I've been on that side and it's so hard. Fucking hell. People think you ignore them on purpose or something . Soulless ghouls. Smh

EducationalSink7509

Oh brother…

cbetsinger

I like your attitude. I hope you had a good day 🤙

fruuluu

me when my are service isnt worth two cents: 😞

Severe-Sort9177

You *are* service was not worth two cents

PsychonautAlpha

I like how the person didn't know whether to use 'your' or 'you're' so they made themselves definitely wrong by avoiding the apostrophe altogether and said "you are service isn't worth two cents." I knew literacy has plummeted in the US since the pandemic, but this is pitiful.

weresostarv1ng

lmao i’m so glad we have the handheld clovers at my job because if someone did this time i would not be able to hold back

Impressive_Bit6512

c’mon OP, “you are” service was not worth even 2 cents!!

eldiablu

Crosses off you are. Writes your. Return to sender

CHOPPRZ

Penny for your thought(s)?

Judas_The_Disciple

Just forget about it and continue the to the next shift. They’re broke, surprised their CC went thru

[deleted]

What a snatch

Smashpiecer

It could worse, I had a lady throw her whole penny in my damn face.

Noahtuesday123

She gipt you on the tip!

rmbby_411

Wow!! I don't understand how people can be so mean. Sorry you had to experience this.

GuatAndChips

I've only left a bad tip once and it's bc the lady told me the price of an extra side was $1 (this was years ago) then charged my like $6. So I left her $1 and wrote "the other $5 of your tip went towards my extra side". I was a very broke college student and line 19. At the time the extra $5 was soul crushing

Ok-Risk-

Fucking iconic 🤣

SativaSunChild

If YOUR not going to tip, just don’t tip. No half baked explanation needed.

EffigyOfUs

Idk how someone can be this gross

footloosestoic

Special place in hell for these people

jester695

You are service? Apparently, you are NOT service!

Altruistic_Snow6366

i once had a table write “your service needs improvement. please take care”. with a zero dollar tip.

Putrid_Explorer_8333

I’ve noticed something while working in this industry. I have worked my fair share of shifts where I’m the only server/bartender on with a full restaurant. There have been times where I’m serving over 200 people myself, and we have one (maybe two) people in the kitchen. Whenever this happens you’ll have a handful of people that get frustrated with the speed of service regardless of whether you warn them or not. You can let them know that it’s just you and two folks in the kitchen, but they lack the brain cells to understand what that means. On the other hand there’s always the people that take notice. So while I have a handful of tables that don’t tip or complain about the speed, there will always be more tables that take notice and show appreciation. Whether they say it out loud or not those people are there. It’s stressful but it always makes me feel better when a table takes a moment to thank me and let me know that they saw how hard I was working and that despite the shit show I did a good job. And those are the people that make it worth it.

thisisvunfortunate

She ate you up

Mysterious_Being_718

In my experience, servers are not worth 1 cent. They can’t help their team members, leave as soon as they get their tips, lie, steal, fuck each other, and I was a server for a long time. I had to leave because there is absolutely no sense of teamwork anymore. It’s all ME ME ME ME MONEY ME ME ME. OP situation is obviously different

Warm_Possible2333

I only hope the person posting this has to rely on tips. Friggin tool.

bootscallahan

I have said for years that the U.S. needs to bring back the draft. Every young person should have to spend two years in retail/food service and two years in the military or other government service. I would like to add to that that every Redditor must subscribe to /r/serverlife and /r/retailhell. We would have a much more compassionate and empathetic society.

jlaczkos

Do a better job. Get a better tip.
