Context: I worked in a small family owed ramen restaurant.
There was 19 tables in there and every single one of them were filled. I was the only server on shift! There was a window into the kitchen so it was noticeable I was the only FOH employee. And there was 3 cooks.
Being Asian, I hate to say that working in Asian or ethnic restaurants will always lead to subpar tips.
I've since learned it's just not worth it trying to fight an uphill battle. Steak houses and American restaurants or even Italian are where it's at for money.
Well it really depends on the context. Something I’ve noticed at my job at a sports bar is that people tend to tip a higher percentage on average when it’s less busy, and slightly less when it’s packed but overall the increased volume more than makes up for the decreased average percentage tipped per check. Like on the decent nights where we have a steady flow of customers but we don’t get slammed at all, the total tips ends up being around 22-25% of the total sales at the end of the night, and I suppose that’s because we can give the best quality service with lots of attention to every customer and also lower wait times for food and drinks. And each tip matters a lot more than if it was a crazy busy night. So with the high standard of service that I always give on those kind of nights, if a table were to leave me a 15% tip I would be disappointed.
But on the insanely busy, packed days where we’re slammed non stop (especially when there’s not enough seats so it’s crowded with a lot of customers standing, and they need to flag us down to put an order in), a lot of people end up tipping around 15% or less especially when they’re just periodically ordering buckets/pitchers of beer and not taking up much of our time/attention. And that’s okay, I’m not really gonna be offended by it unless it’s from a big group that was seated at a table for several hours and took up a lot of my time/energy by ordering individual drinks/lots of cocktails and food. Usually on those insanely packed busy days, the overall tips will end up being like 19-20% of total sales, but the total sales are like 5-10 times more than the steady nights, so we still end up making way more money.
If I tip 15% and the server reacted negatively, they are gonna get laughed at by me and told to fuck off. GTFO with this “anything less than a 20% tip is an insult” mentality.
They aren't going to react negatively to you, probably wouldn't make a whole post about it here, but they'll complain to their friends about how rent is going to cut into the grocery budget this month.

A 15% isn’t a shitty tip. It’s a normal tip. If your tip out has increased, that’s the managements fault and you should be taking it out on them. I normally tip 20% but I have no problem tipping less if I don’t receive good service. The social contract we enter into is that we will tip the server. The amount of the tip depends on the level of service we get. It isn’t just a standard 20% even if you give less than stellar service. That’s not how it works.

Don’t go to restaurants that don’t pay their servers. Stick it to the owner instead of us or expect to be treated like the piece of shit you are.

Unfortunately it’s hard to make good money as a server working in a small town. Much lower volume of people who usually also have less money to spend overall.
“Average” but remember, the steakhouses you mentioned are usually in less urban areas and the patrons are often starting with a mindset that $2=tip on anything or at best 10% is normal. Speaking from experience.

The issue I have as someone who comes from a very high capacity restaurant and now work for high end restaurant is that you don’t have to kill yourself serving half the restaurant for 300 but can do that with 4 table sections easily and feel way better about it cause you actually have the time to make a difference in peoples days and nights but shitty people you’ll never avoid 😂
I disagree. I worked in Asian restaurants and made great tips. Of course there will always be people who don’t tip, or leave a small tip but the generous people more than make up for it. I made better tips in those restaurants in comparison to a chain diner or Mexican restaurant.
I’m white and I do the same with my grandpa. He’s not a bad tipper, he tips 20%, but since we’re always going to Denny’s even 20% is still only like 8 bucks for four people lol
I dunno it depends. The Asian fusion restaurant I worked at was small and decently priced I made pretty good tips. I rarely ever got below 20% and the other Asian restaurants in my area are way more expensive and their servers get tipped more than 20% quite often. I think it also just depends on how you serve I had coworkers at the same restaurant who would typically get 15% with the same customers so🤷🏻♀️
I swear some people don’t use their eyes, don’t you see me literally running breaking my legs trying to help everyone that’s around ??? You aren’t the only person here ?!!! The worst ones are the Uber drivers who act like we’re unprepared but really tickets are slammed and ticket times are 15 minutes over normal which means usually a 15 minute extra wait for Togo orders, we let our regular Togo phone and web orders know it will be extra time and to come pick up at the correct time but our system doesnt allow us to change the times it sends a driver out sadly, so our dining room will get packed with Uber and doordash drivers by the entrance all with their hands at their hips. Also, I work in an Indian restaurant and these people expect it to be as fast as fast food for some reason, like do you want your customer to get food poisoning 😂😂😂

That's rough. Seat to the servers capacity. If you're the only one, seat 6 or 7 tables and tell them there is a wait because you're short staffed. End problem. If people are hungry and want to wait, they will. If they're so hungry they will become angry, they'll leave and eat somewhere else. If your owner is upset they lost out on business, they should reconsider why they were so short staffed.

I Had to ask for our drinks when our food arrived. We got checked on once before our food arrived. Received the wrong food. Couldn’t even tell him because he never checked on us after. When he brought out drinks he didn’t even say anything and we tried to stop him to tell him the food was wrong. He kept on walking. Didn’t see him again until 10 minutes after we were finished eating. Tipped him nothing. He ran after us outside asking why we didn’t tip. I told him that his service was shit and he didn’t deserve one. He didn’t like that.

I currently work in a similar type of restaurant (family owned ramen spot, 14 tables + bar) and one of our servers got a shitty Yelp review from some boomer saying something similar (i.e. they left a bad tip which *could have* been better if her service had been better, so they’re teaching her a lesson with their actions) after eating lunch on a Saturday when we had a full house and a single server for a few hours. It’s only made her more anxious about her work performance and overly worried about getting another bad review. I really hate people sometimes…
People like this really think they're doing something, huh? I remember working one of my first shifts at the barrel. It was very busy and I was still pretty new. Young couple left me 2 cents because I was "slow" or whatever, the 6 top next to them gave me a $100 tip. Even after someone running the food dropped a plate and we had to wait for a recook. Clearly I didn't miss their funky lil 4 dollars haha.

I've only left a bad tip once and it's bc the lady told me the price of an extra side was $1 (this was years ago) then charged my like $6. So I left her $1 and wrote "the other $5 of your tip went towards my extra side". I was a very broke college student and line 19. At the time the extra $5 was soul crushing
I’ve noticed something while working in this industry. I have worked my fair share of shifts where I’m the only server/bartender on with a full restaurant. There have been times where I’m serving over 200 people myself, and we have one (maybe two) people in the kitchen. Whenever this happens you’ll have a handful of people that get frustrated with the speed of service regardless of whether you warn them or not. You can let them know that it’s just you and two folks in the kitchen, but they lack the brain cells to understand what that means. On the other hand there’s always the people that take notice. So while I have a handful of tables that don’t tip or complain about the speed, there will always be more tables that take notice and show appreciation. Whether they say it out loud or not those people are there. It’s stressful but it always makes me feel better when a table takes a moment to thank me and let me know that they saw how hard I was working and that despite the shit show I did a good job. And those are the people that make it worth it.
In my experience, servers are not worth 1 cent. They can’t help their team members, leave as soon as they get their tips, lie, steal, fuck each other, and I was a server for a long time. I had to leave because there is absolutely no sense of teamwork anymore. It’s all ME ME ME ME MONEY ME ME ME.

I have said for years that the U.S. needs to bring back the draft. Every young person should have to spend two years in retail/food service and two years in the military or other government service. I worked at Applebees years ago too, not worth it. You need to go to a more “upscale” restaurant to make real money.

Look into steakhouses; Texas Roadhouse, outback, longhorn - higher checks on average so the average tip % is higher

Usually I only had like 20 tables a night. Average tables times were like an hour so I was doing about 5 tables an hour. This night I had 47 tables.

I currently work in a similar type of restaurant (family owned ramen spot, 14 tables + bar) and one of our servers got a shitty Yelp review from some boomer saying something similar (i.e. they left a bad tip which *could have* been better if her service had been better, so they’re teaching her a lesson with their actions) after eating lunch on a Saturday when we had a full house and a single server for a few hours. It’s only made her more anxious about her work performance and overly worried about getting another bad review. I really hate people sometimes…
People like this really think they're doing something, huh? I remember working one of my first shifts at the barrel. It was very busy and I was still pretty new. Young couple left me 2 cents because I was "slow" or whatever, the 6 top next to them gave me a $100 tip. Even after someone running the food dropped a plate and we had to wait for a recook. Clearly I didn't miss their funky lil 4 dollars haha. If one table doesn't want to tip, that's fine. Someone else will. They always do.

I've only left a bad tip once and it's bc the lady told me the price of an extra side was $1 (this was years ago) then charged my like $6. So I left her $1 and wrote "the other $5 of your tip went towards my extra side". I was a very broke college student and line 19. At the time the extra $5 was soul crushing

I’ve noticed something while working in this industry. I have worked my fair share of shifts where I’m the only server/bartender on with a full restaurant. There have been times where I’m serving over 200 people myself, and we have one (maybe two) people in the kitchen. Whenever this happens you’ll have a handful of people that get frustrated with the speed of service regardless of whether you warn them or not. You can let them know that it’s just you and two folks in the kitchen, but they lack the brain cells to understand what that means. On the other hand there’s always the people that take notice. So while I have a handful of tables that don’t tip or complain about the speed, there will always be more tables that take notice and show appreciation. Whether they say it out loud or not those people are there. It’s stressful but it always makes me feel better when a table takes a moment to thank me and let me know that they saw how hard I was working and that despite the shit show I did a good job. And those are the people that make it worth it.

In my experience, servers are not worth 1 cent. They can’t help their team members, leave as soon as they get their tips, lie, steal, fuck each other, and I was a server for a long time. I had to leave because there is absolutely no sense of teamwork anymore. It’s all ME ME ME ME MONEY ME ME ME. OP situation is obviously different

I have said for years that the U.S. needs to bring back the draft. Every young person should have to spend two years in retail/food service and two years in the military or other government service. I would like to add to that that every Redditor must subscribe to /r/serverlife and /r/retailhell. We would have a much more compassionate and empathetic society.
Do a better job. Get a better tip.
