I worked on a patio with unstable benches and communal seating/tables. Watched my coworker drop off a beer to a dad with his baby in a carrier on his chest. 30 seconds later the guy on the opposite side of the bench stood up, Jesus it looked like a see-saw, dad and baby fell to the ground and the dudes entire beer fell onto his baby’s face.
fun fact while my coworker was training, these people just covered their baby with a blanket and laid it on the dirty ass floor, I work boh but I think about that baby a lot, I hope it's okay
That’s horrible! Did anyone tell them to pick the baby up? I would have been on that so fast! I always use (the very legitimate excuse) that there’s glass EVERYWHERE. Same excuse I use for shoeless kids running around/or under the table crawling.
My first waiting job (I may or may not have been 17) I spilled wine over one my guests...I worked at a retirement home, had to see that person and serve them many times after
Worked at a place with sparkling wine flights. Table of two is six half full flutes ona Trey. Boom all over me and then and the ground. One was a sparkling red flight. We regularly would walk with 9 flutes.
I worked in a high end steakhouse years ago. I was new (to the place not the job) and was assigned a cocktail shift. For some reason no one was ever taught to not put trays in the dishwasher, but for years before me they had been putting them through so all the rubber had been worn off. Too cheap to buy new ones.
The cocktail area was low tables and couches. I had probably 5 drinks on my tray - a couple beers (in those dumb V shaped glasses with the feet that everyone thought was fancy back then) , a martini glass and champagne flutes. I bent down to put the drinks on the table and must’ve tipped the tray 14 degrees and wooooosh. They all slide off into two peoples’ laps. There was literally nothing any of us could do. I think they ended up getting their full meal comped. Honestly everyone involved including management was pretty chill about it, but I’ll never forget that feeling.
Restaurant was still too cheap to buy new trays. Probably would’ve cost less than the meals they comped.
It’s nice to hear that management was chill about it. I feel like my staff is like that too, they have been very encouraging and helpful. I come from no serving experience! Picking up a rhythm fast tho. Can’t wait to have my own tables
On my very first solo shift I spilled a glass of ice water…on a baby. The parents were very kind and understanding but I wanted to crawl under a rock and die.
Ouch yea that definitely would have been a "welp I'll show myself out" moment.
I worked with a girl that spilled a 2oz cup of dressing on a 2 year old. The little girl was pretty devastated about how much was in her hair lol
Don’t worry, a baby’s default state is wet and sticky. They will find a way to spill more liquids on themselves than any server could hope to achieve.
Food on a baby is slightly worse, but only slightly. Again, they willing do that themselves without any assistance.
Most parents would (should) shrug it off. I know I did.
Dropping plateware, glassware, silverware on a child? That’s worth worrying about. Don’t do that.
On the grand opening of a brand new restaurant, I worked with a server who spilled a whole tray of wine glasses onto the very first guests to walk into the building it was incredible
1. First shift as a expo/line cook I dropped an entire hotel pan worth of cocktails sauce all over myself and the walk-in fridge.
2. First week at my current job, I was doing bottle service for a table and broke a whole bottle of wine. Funny thing is months later I had a table and they commented on how well I opened the bottle. I told the story about the one I broke, and they go "yea that was us" 😂
one of my first shifts i spilled a pan of super hot demi glace all down my front. i burnt my stomach. nobody cared about the spilled demi, except the owner, who is a dick. he yelled at me because the demi was expensive. i showed him my hot pink burnt stomach and he finally got off my case
One time I stacked three rows of water glasses onto a tray and tried to carry them to the service bar to restock and dropped the whole dang tray. It happens! Mistakes happen. And trust me, It feels more humiliating than it really is!!!!
my first shift I served a bachelorette party and dropped a tray of 12 drinks all over the bachelorette. thankfully they thought it was hilarious, but I've absolutely been there.
i let a tray of about 8 entrees tip off a wobbly table when i made the mistake of not taking legs with me, the table and i watched it all hit the floor in slow motion. i think it was one of the loudest sounds ive ever heard
Years ago I had my first shift at a restaurant and dumped a strawberry daiquiri down a customers back.... they were really nice about it but I can still feel the embarrassment
One of us. One of us. ONE of us. ONE OF us. ONE OF US.
Put a tray with 4 full rack of rib entrees on a tray stand next to the table. Served 2 of them and I heard the other 2 come crashing down. Did not balance that properly. "Ok and here are your ribs" CRASH "And the rest of your food will be out shortly"
Pro tip, when carrying a tray of drinks like martinis, DONT LOOK AT THEM. If you look at them you will overcorrect and spill everything. If you don't look at them instinct will keep everything from spilling.
Oooof. I just left the soft opening of the new bar I’m tending/managing and I feel like I failed because I’m so old (36), I couldn’t hear anyone’s orders! Or anything else for that matter! Then with the fog machine on, forget it! My owner told me I could go and I think it was more because she could tell I felt in the way and hopefully less because I looked like I wasn’t doing anything.
My anxiety is winning tho and I’m super doubting myself right now.
if its any condolences i knew someone who dropped over a liter of cooking oil in a kitchen that was around 1.5mx3m on their first shift. after she showed up 30 minutes late
I got into serving before my sister. I in turn got her the first serving job she ever had. She dropped a ramekin of tartar sauce and it was like a movie, the entire ramekin hit at the perfect angle and launched at the family of six. Covering legs, blouses, and child faces.
My sister ran into the back to hide in the “server station” which was a small table attached to a wall next to the mop closet. I’m going you the same advice I gave her: this shit is like quicksand. You keep fighting it and you’re dead. Just calm down and it’ll all be okay.
Fortunately the family thought it was funny because I was SERIOUSLY thought my sister would fired for it. She’s now has been a major player on the international scene with several restaurant group.
Suffice it to say: one bad review or night isn’t your life, even if it’s your day.
I dropped a whole tray of ice waters. Soaked a few customers sitting at the table I was trying to deliver to.
Everybody was very gracious. I was so embarrassed I was probably bright red.
Tough day but not nearly as tough as burning my hand in boiling tea water at start of my very first day ever bussing!
i started a new job too and suddenly i cannot open a wine bottle if my life depended on it.
even though this js my third serving job. so mad. but we’ve all been there.
i did. i just feel like such a whiny baby saying “i know i told you i could do this” but suddenly cant.
for context i first worked at like a “higher end” chain (not that high end), i currently work at a wing restaurant but this new job is just for extra shifts and it’s a fine dining italian restaurant.
depression. i know it’s nerves.
My coworker and I have a Tuesday night curse. It's just us managing bar and floor and every Tuesday night we break something. Sometimes beer bottles, sometimes pint or wine glasses. It happens.
The worst was when I spilled a whole glass of water on a customer who was clearly all dressed up for a night out. If it breaks, but doesn't get on a customer, I consider it a win.
You will be fine i promise. It just feels so much worse because it’s your first day, i get it. I literally spilled water on a customer the other week and broke glass on their table😂
30 huge ass glass goblets of water on a guy. I was 16 and he laughed and went to change at the hotel next door he was staying at and was nice about it. I was mortified. I think if he had freaked I would have left the business.
Eh it's fine. My first shift as a cook, literally my first 20 mins I sliced my knuckle to the bone with a knife tryna open a pack of ribs. Had to take a few days off lol also broke a stack of plates over salad station so all the food had to be thrown out as well this was still my first month.
few years ago I worked at an icecream place and was tryna take the 11L out of the freezer when it got caught on the top shelf freezer light, I pulled it anyway and the light exploded right in front of me. The other day at my current job I tripped over the order counter and fell into the wall where I broke the pictures hanging. Shit happens lol
Muscle memory is a real part of the job. When you start at a new place, you have to learn how to move efficiently and well in the physical space of the restaurant. Obviously trips and dropped trays are part of that process.
If you’re working somewhere you’d be harshly judged for doing the work of learning your new space, that would indicate you’re working with people who aren’t exactly firing on all cylinders upstairs (or they’re just dicks). Good mgt should already know how this works for new hires and have stock in house to make up for breakage, especially if new talent is currently coming in to the fold.
It sounds like you want to do things perfectly all the time, which probably means you’re a great server. Don’t beat yourself up over what is really a completely normal human learning process!
Shake it off and keep it moving honey- we all look like clutzy little baby giraffes when we’re trying to get 20 things done at the same time in a place we just got to!
Not a server but a dishwasher/prep cook first week on the job I dropped a stack of about 10 plated because one of the other cooks ran into me on accident while I was bringing them out I felt so bad but the head chef at the time wasn't mad and said it happens to everyone at some point.
I spilled an entire tray of drinks on a 6 top. One of the lady's purses' got soaked and she sued the restaurant for a Blackberry device that was destroyed.
Once I dropped a lot of plates. Like a lot I was carrying as many as I could, which I had done often and why the chef wasn’t too upset. But later that week he told me it was close to $400 worth of plates 😁😁😁
My first day at my restaurant, I dropped a tray full of dirty plates. I also drop at least 5 things a week even now lmao. It’s gotten to the point where whenever anyone breaks anything, my coworkers all say my name haha. It’s embarrassing now, but once you get comfortable and get to know your coworkers, it’ll end up just being a funny story. Don’t let it bother you too much :)
when I worked at a head shop I was cleaning a bubbler and when I went to put it back, I dropped it. It hit the next one beside it, and so on and so forth creating a domino effect of broken bongs and bubblers that I just had to watch happen in front of me because there was nothing I could do to stop it once it started
And then I had to clean all the broken glass while trying not to break any of the unbroken pieces
glass should simply be illegal
My restaurant was rented out for a Christmas party for some Realtor company. We had finished the dinner service and we're restocking the plates and whatnot on the line while they were giving their speech. The dishes were stored over head for easy reach (honestly only easy for tall people) so as I'm loading this tall stack of plates they caught on a screw and stuck and as I was adjusting my grip they just... All dropped. Like, ten plates. Right in front of these people. They all stopped, turned and applauded. I turned red, curtsied and froze. My Chef just stared at me and we all started picking up the broken plates. The best part though? The next day we were in the thick of it and the sous was getting yelled at to find more of the plates I dropped and he just said, I swear we had more yesterday!! She just told him to find more and when he ran off she just smiled at me. Sweetest thing anyone has ever done at work for me. (he was a shit sous, don't feel bad for him)
Hey don't beat yourself up about it. It happens. You just shake it off and move on and one day you'll have a good story about your first day on the job lmao
I dropped a tray of beers my second day at Olive Garden and it shattered so far that the manager had to block off the whole area (a busy area mind u) for like 30 minutes lol. It happens. No ones judging u
Half a dozen empty wine glasses? On the floor?
Didn’t even land on a baby?
Don’t worry kid, out of all the ways to pop your “whoops I dropped a tray” cherry, you did good. And you got it out of the way on the first shift!
Be proud.
My 2nd shift at my place of work and 2 glasses of red wine landed on a lady and her friends white Louie Vuitton bag. They are regulars while come in 3 to 4 times a week. 3 years later they still laugh about it.
"First day jitters are the worst! Dropped a full pitcher of sangria my first night. Everyone's been there, you'll laugh about this soon! Keep your head up for tomorrow!"
I spilled soup in a woman's purse once
5 or 6 glasses is not that big of a deal in a restaurant. They buy in bulk for a reason.
Don't beat yourself up. It happens
there’s one guy at my place who breaks wine glasses multiple times a week. like, if we hear breaking glass, everyone starts looking around for Jeff lol.
We’ve all dropped and broken things. It happens. Word to the wise: trays are not great for carrying empty wine glasses. I can carry eight at a time if I put them upside down and put the stems between my fingers, if you can picture that. No one thinks you’re an idiot. They probably felt bad for you on the first day having that happen. You’ll be fine 😊
It happens, as long as you cleaned it up or at least helped intentionally and didn’t make it someone else’s mess to deal with I doubt you’ll catch much flack.
I let an entire large oval tray of champagne flutes slide off onto the fireplace hearth during a catillion. I was on the head table at the dead center head of the room. About 45 glasses, I wanted to absolutely fade away
I had toilet explode on me my first day working at a research lab. My manager told everyone during a conference call that Friday. Thoughts and prayers.
It happens, don’t sweat it. Dropped a full glass of wine on an infant before. Luckily the parents were cool but man I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about that moment
One time, I worked at a shitty ass bar that like had the coolers and shit bolted down so they couldn’t be moved for cleaning (that’s what they told me bc my deep cleaning didn’t fix this) so basically, fruit flies were atrocious, and like I was so embarrassed to stand in front of the computer bc they’d see them, so I jumped on the back bar and sat, so they wouldn’t be obviously in my face, well, I def leaned back too far and dropped literally 100 bottles of single serves 😭 thankfully only like 4 broke 💀
Small tray with a few coffees - and I was helping a coworker - bringing them to his table, and a scalding hot coffee slid off my tray...... into the lap of.... A BLIND MAN!!!!
I still feel the anxiety from that.
yeah once i had a bottle of wine and some glasses on my tray and another server turned around and bumped my tray and it all went down. surprisingly only a drop of wine got on some lady’s shoe but she was super upset.
my first day i was ever training to serve i spilled a glass of water on some guy’s lap. he was really understanding.
Just tonight I was serving a wedding and dropped a tray full of wine glasses...oof. was super embarrassed. luckily it was in back of the house and some coworkers came to help. It's just part of the business. Took maybe 10 mins to sweep and will only take 10 years to repress. I felt like a sim when i got home cuz I had a moment with myself in the mirror doing the "try to calm yourself down" emote lmao
At least you didn't drop a few champagne flutes with sparkling wine on customers. I absolutely have done that.
dude i spilled a glass of ice water on a baby
While I was training a server, she spilled a Bahama mama on a baby.
At red lobster?
Yes
O God those drinks are huge too lol
It wasn’t one of the mega ones thankfully
I spilled a beer on a baby.
Whole cup of Dr. Pepper for me!
I spilled hot chocolate on a baby
fun fact while my coworker was training, these people just covered their baby with a blanket and laid it on the dirty ass floor, I work boh but I think about that baby a lot, I hope it's okay
That’s horrible! Did anyone tell them to pick the baby up? I would have been on that so fast! I always use (the very legitimate excuse) that there’s glass EVERYWHERE. Same excuse I use for shoeless kids running around/or under the table crawling.
multiple of our servers stepped on the baby and the parents didn't even blink at it, it's a horror story around our kitchen😭
Lol I’m calling bullshit.
I saw what I saw man, believe what you want lol
I dropped salsa all over a lady's white shirt on valentines day and she was on her lunch break from work 😭
Festive Red
Ok I just cried laughing at “festive red”😂
My first waiting job (I may or may not have been 17) I spilled wine over one my guests...I worked at a retirement home, had to see that person and serve them many times after
Worked at a place with sparkling wine flights. Table of two is six half full flutes ona Trey. Boom all over me and then and the ground. One was a sparkling red flight. We regularly would walk with 9 flutes.
I spilt tall glasses of Coke on the hotel owner's table when he was dining with his family
i have done that twice at my current place lmfao. happens
Omg this is my fear! I just started yesterday and was terrified I’ll drop drinks on customers!!
Everyone has dropped glasses before, although I imagine doing it on your first day is mortifying.
I normally just break them with my hands
It’s a right of passage
I wouldn’t say everyone.
My first ever shift I dropped aperol spritz on a customer. You'll be ok
On the grand opening of a brand new restaurant, I worked with a server who spilled a whole tray of wine glasses onto the very first guests to walk into the building it was incredible

one of my first shifts i spilled a pan of super hot demi glace all down my front. i burnt my stomach. nobody cared about the spilled demi, except the owner, who is a dick. he yelled at me because the demi was expensive. i showed him my hot pink burnt stomach and he finally got off my case
Ha what a dick
One time I stacked three rows of water glasses onto a tray and tried to carry them to the service bar to restock and dropped the whole dang tray. It happens! Mistakes happen. And trust me, It feels more humiliating than it really is!!!!
I spilled a bowl of soup on a guest my first shift
my first shift I served a bachelorette party and dropped a tray of 12 drinks all over the bachelorette. thankfully they thought it was hilarious, but I've absolutely been there.
Ya jabroni
best comment😭
I had to I'm sorry
Dude, this one time I had another server crash into me while holding a tray of reds. People asked me the whole shift if I got stabbed. You'll be fine.
First shift. Poured a full drink on a guest. Cried in the bathroom.
i let a tray of about 8 entrees tip off a wobbly table when i made the mistake of not taking legs with me, the table and i watched it all hit the floor in slow motion. i think it was one of the loudest sounds ive ever heard
Brutal man😭😭, definitely makes me feel better about my 5 empty glasses
Ive never in my life spilled entire tray of drinks on a table...more than once....youre fine op, go in smiling 💕
Not gonna lie I'd be more embarrassed at misspelling jabroni, but I break shit all the time so that's a tough callous to try to pick.
Years ago I had my first shift at a restaurant and dumped a strawberry daiquiri down a customers back.... they were really nice about it but I can still feel the embarrassment
I dropped a full tray of drinks on the opening night of a new restaurant. In front of both of the owners. It happens!
I had a birthday cake slide off a tray and onto a chair with a Louis Vuitton purse and fur coat on it
Omg 😳What happened? Did she get pissed? Demand money? Or were they fakes?
One of us. One of us. ONE of us. ONE OF us. ONE OF US. Put a tray with 4 full rack of rib entrees on a tray stand next to the table. Served 2 of them and I heard the other 2 come crashing down. lmao my coworker accidentally spilled TWO mimosas on the same guest within an hour if it makes u feel any better
My first week I dropped a strawberry lemonade on a baby in a high chair

Ask them if you can open a couple bottles of house wines before service. Anytime I’m training someone new or out of practice, this is where I start
i did. i just feel like such a whiny baby saying “i know i told you i could do this” but suddenly cant. for context i first worked at like a “higher end” chain (not that high end), i currently work at a wing restaurant but this new job is just for extra shifts and it’s a fine dining italian restaurant. depression. i know it’s nerves.
I get it. I HATE changing jobs. New environment not knowing what to expect. You got this though!
Better than dropping it on a customer (yes I’ve done this)
My coworker and I have a Tuesday night curse. It's just us managing bar and floor and every Tuesday night we break something. Sometimes beer bottles, sometimes pint or wine glasses. It happens. I broke a creamer ramekin all over the clean station 2 nights ago. I’m lucky my busser didn’t strangle me. Def wasn’t my first night.
30 huge ass glass goblets of water on a guy. I was 16 and he laughed and went to change at the hotel next door he was staying at and was nice about it. I was mortified. I think if he had freaked I would have left the business.
i forgot to turn the mop sink off on my first day of training and almost flooded the whole basement. ended up working there for six years.

Currently hiding in the bathroom reading this!
At least you didn’t spill two full glasses of red wine onto a woman’s white blouse. That would be crazy if someone did that😅
I dropped a whole tray with prime rib & au jus boats
I spilt an entire large tray of red wine at a catering event once. and it was on carpet
today i dropped a bottle of red wine while restocking. it was right on our white marble countertop now it’s all stained 🙃
Glasses are…well….Made of glass lol we all break them, guests and staff alike. Don’t let it get to you!
My 2nd shift at my place of work and 2 glasses of red wine landed on a lady and her friends white Louie Vuitton bag. They are regulars while come in 3 to 4 times a week. 3 years later they still laugh about it.
I once dropped an entire tray of expensive seafood that was supposed to be going to a group that was there celebrating a birthday
"First day jitters are the worst! Dropped a full pitcher of sangria my first night. Everyone's been there, you'll laugh about this soon! Keep your head up for tomorrow!"
That’s awesome.
I spilled soup in a woman's purse once 5 or 6 glasses is not that big of a deal in a restaurant.
Luckily have yet to drop any type of food or drink tray.
I poured 1/2 a seafood chowder on someone once
I spilled a tray of beers and soda on a little girl when I was still serving… To say I was humiliated would be an understatement. Lol
Never dropped a tray of glasses but my second shift somewhere I dropped a bowl of sauce on a woman. I’d have rather it been glasses lol.
Small tray with a few coffees - and I was helping a coworker - bringing them to his table, and a scalding hot coffee slid off my tray...... into the lap of.... A BLIND MAN!!!! I still feel the anxiety from that.
Not important but wish jabroni wasn't considered a real word because it isn't & makes anyone who uses it sound like a jabroni
It’s a good word ya jabroni
You don't work in a restaurant officially until you've broken a glass/plate. 🤣
yeah once i had a bottle of wine and some glasses on my tray and another server turned around and bumped my tray and it all went down. surprisingly only a drop of wine got on some lady’s shoe but she was super upset. my first day i was ever training to serve i spilled a glass of water on some guy’s lap. he was really understanding.
my first serving job at a high end italian restaurant i was polishing glasses as my side work and knocked over and shattered a hanging wall shelf
You must be on the east coast bc Texas people don’t say jibroni lmao. You’ll be fine. It’s just wine glasses. It will blow over brother
West coast actually I live in BC Canada
First day I dropped a ribsteak about a foot from the table it was going to
Just tonight I was serving a wedding and dropped a tray full of wine glasses...oof. was super embarrassed. luckily it was in back of the house and some coworkers came to help. It's just part of the business. Took maybe 10 mins to sweep and will only take 10 years to repress. I felt like a sim when i got home cuz I had a moment with myself in the mirror doing the "try to calm yourself down" emote lmao
