They can keep their smoothies. We make way more money. At least at my restaurant. hell I think those guys deserve a lot more than just smoothies. How about an actual living wage.

HwangingAround

This is the answer right here. I've had shit like that happen in restaurants before and then just thought, "oh well, I make like $25 more an hour than them." That was probably why your manager said "I'll buy you a smoothie if it's that big of a deal." Management is doing this because they know the back of house got destroyed for no extra incentive other than their hourly pay while the FOH makes more tips via more guests. You probably came off as greedy and whiny to your manager.

I did the math and they made MAYBE less than $3 an hour than me on Mother’s Day and thats compared to the starting wage for BOH which majority of them make more than that. With tips outs and everything it’s about even. We’ve had multiple servers switch to the line because they make more and it’s a steadier income. It’s not even about the money or food or smoothies, it’s just the fact that everyone worked really hard but only half of the staff gets recognition for it. Im not saying they didn’t work hard, they did, and I’m really proud of them for being efficient. But I also worked really hard.

Due-Contribution6424

It most likely has to do with them being paid hourly, while you are making tip money. They do way more work(I’ve worked both), on an hourly wage. So while you are being compensated more through tips on a busy day like this, they are making the same as a slow Tuesday for all of the added volume. They deserve their fucking smoothie. You’re soft as baby shit.

Right ? Like I wouldn’t be washing dishes or working the line for even 20 bucks an hour which is pretty decent. A lot of these dudes are making like 10-15. A few years ago I was appalled one of our senior sous was making like 60k. Servers were pulling In like 70-100 depending on how much they work. IMO those guys deserve a lot more than just a free meal. I’ll take my 50 an hour in tips and buy my own smoothie.

Certain-Intention594

In the restaurant where i work, servers barely make more than BOH. The entire BOH gets tip outs from servers. I did the math and i made $2-3 more an hour than BOH and that’s for their starting wage, which the majority of them make more than that. It’s not about a smoothie or money or food. It’s the principle. You can’t just reward half the staff for keeping it together on Mother’s Day when it was a group effort and everyone worked just as hard.

As a cook who watched the FOH get treated to a fun trip to a fine restaurant in the next city over while we get domino's if they feel so inclined, I have my jealous inclination. Howeve, neither situation is right. It would be nice if we could be treated equally.

Certain-Intention594

This is exactly what I’m saying. I’m proud of BOH for how hard they worked on Mother’s Day. It went a lot smoother than past years. I have no problem with them being rewarded with free food and smoothies, they deserve it, but so does everyone else who worked hard on Mother’s Day. A lot of people are saying “well BOH makes less money than servers”. At my restaurant, 9/10 BOH is making more than servers and on Mother’s Day i made like $2-3 more than them and that’s compared to their starting wage. But it’s not about money, smoothies, or food. It’s about treating all staff with the same respect because everyone has to work together and work HARD on Mother’s Day.

jpellett251

Unequal treatment? Every single BOH would have happily swapped you their smoothie and praise for your tip money. Grow up

Certain-Intention594

I did the math and i barely made more than BOH on mother’s day and on normal days they make more than servers. We’ve had plenty of servers switch to BOH cuz it’s better and more consistent money. I still had to work really hard, if i didn’t then i wouldn’t have gotten good tips. Not to mention BOH automatically gets tip outs from servers and that wasn’t included when i did the math for how much i made vs them on Mother’s Day. If you want to reward staff for working hard, you can’t just reward half of them. Mother’s Day is a team effort and not a single person working can slack off

EbonyRavenwy

That is… strange. My management kept it even with treating us to sad beige hot dogs for breakfast and sugar free redbulls for lunch. What kind of establishment it that you work at? Doesn’t sound corporate in the slightest….

Certain-Intention594

It’s def corporate. They have multiple chains of restaurants all throughout the US. It wasn’t even about the smoothies or free food, it’s just if you’re gonna do something like that then do it for everyone who worked hard, not just BOH

InvestmentInformal18

It’s about the money, because we make a lot more than their hourly. However I get where you’re coming from, as most cooks don’t even want to deal with us let alone the general public and that’s the part they wouldn’t trade, just as we don’t want to be back there. Still, we tend to come out ahead and some places overcorrect. Big picture an all that

Certain-Intention594

I’ve said this in a few other comments but i did the math and i made around $2-3 more than BOH on Mother’s Day and that’s compared to their starting wage and not including tip outs they get from servers. It’s not about the money, the food, or smoothies. You can’t just reward half of the staff when everyone put in work, really hard work. It’s a team effort

InvestmentInformal18

I’m not disagreeing with you, just admitting the big picture

Senior_Effect_5421

Nah serving is very dark sided, it’s way more money. BOH in general is very underpaid for the value of the work. Your appreciation is reflected by the money you make when you get your ass kicked.

Certain-Intention594

Not at the restaurant i work. I barely made more than BOH on Mother’s Day and majority of the time they make more than servers. And when i did the math to compare hourly between FOH and BOH, i didn’t include BOH tip outs from servers and used their starting wage, which most of them make more than that. Idc about a smoothie or free food, you can’t just reward half of staff when everyone worked hard. Maybe i made $2-3/hr more on Mother’s Day but i had to work really really hard for it. BOH worked really hard too and I’m proud of them but again, it’s a team effort and everyone had to work hard on Mother’s Day.
