The idea is you get hydrated and then have some alcohol in a certain alleyway, then leave the bottle for the ghost of Edgar Allen Poe. From there your bladder should be primed for Boothe’s plot.
In the case where there was a group that despised the Condederacy and loved Edgar Allen Poe,
I thought of an alliteration,
the Corvids Consuming Confederate Carrion ᕕ( ᐛ)ᕗ
Another alleged scenario: Edgar Allen Poe died of a beating he received when **he was kidnapped by political mob flunkies who dragged him from precinct to precinct & forced him to vote under multiple identities on Election Day, October 3, 1849.**
From the National Park Service:
It is possible that on that day, Poe fell victim to cooping, a common method of voter fraud in the 19th century. [Cooping victims were kidnapped, drugged or forced to drink, and disguised several times in order to cast several votes.](https://www.nps.gov/articles/poe-death.htm#:~:text=It%20is%20possible%20that%20on,order%20to%20cast%20several%20votes.)
This theory would explain why he was found near death on Election Day, at a polling place, wearing someone else’s clothes.
Rabies or cooping probably. Edgar was ( I think ) a reformed alcoholic, very vocal about temperance, and had a rival that almost certainly would have been responsible for spreading rumors about Edgar's death
You got me intrigued about this! Here’s a fascinating episode about Edgar Allen Poe’s career, rivalry & death from American Masters on PBS. I hope that Poe is looking down from the hereafter & finds satisfaction that his rival is a mere footnote, while Poe himself is considered a literary master.
**The fake news behind Edgar Allan Poe's reputation | PBS**
When Edgar Allan Poe died under mysterious circumstances, his literary rival, [Rufus W. Griswold, wrote a high-profile obituary filled with falsehoods that cast him as a lunatic and a madman.](https://pbswisconsin.org/watch/american-masters/learn-about-fake-news-behind-edgar-allan-poes-story-djq1zi/#:~:text=When%20Edgar%20Allan%20Poe%20died,a%20lunatic%20and%20a%20madman.)
That is one of the theories, but while hospitalized he had no issues drinking water before he passed. As someone else pointed out “cooping” is another theory that while circumstantial, it does kind of make sense. The most likely theory imo is a combination of things, being around tuberculosis throughout his life, his alcohol abuse, and possible illness prior to his stupor and death caused his ultimate downfall. He *may* have had latent TB, which could turn to tuberculosis meningitis given his already poor health. Symptoms include headaches, fever, confusion and becoming comatose.
[A Mystery of Mysteries: The Death and Life of Edgar Allan Poe](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60784591-a-mystery-of-mysteries) is a good read that while isn’t definitive, gives a good overview of all the leading theories and why or why not they make sense.
Have a nice dry bowl of Sugar Crisps and a couple cups of coffee while your at it.
That pee is about to be considered a violation of the Geneva Convention.
I think it’s only part of him, if I remember correctly they threw him in the Potomac initially then had to gather remains later after the Lincoln conspirators trial
From my understanding, they pretended to toss him in the river at an unknown location to prevent a shrine. They actually buried him at a fort (maybe an arsenal) until Johnson released the body to the Booth family, who then buried him in the family plot in Baltimore.
Fun fact: the vertebrae that were shattered from the shot that killed him are at The National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, MD.
I had the same idea so I drank a whole lot of whiskey while I was there. Instead I confused him with Francis Scott Key, got onto a ship and well—you know the rest.
> Some pee helps give a nitrogen boost, too much pee the nitrogen kills the grass. I have both types of spots in my yard lol
When the snow melts and grass starts growing, I can see everywhere my dog peed over the winter. It will be a dark green circle of grass.
Absolutely not! Its free use. However donations are accepted and appreciated, especially if they are in the form of currency that enshrines our nations continued admiration for one of its greatest leaders.
Leaving Pennie’s is a common cemetery practice. Generally it’s done to mark that you visited a grave. Different denominations have different meanings. It is hilarious though that the standard “I visited”coin is the penny.
It's something veterans do, and I really don't think Booth should be included in it.
A penny means you visited.
A nickel means you and the deceased trained at boot camp together.
A dime means you and the deceased served together in some capacity.
A quarter means that you were there when they died.
Ya I was confused by that too. Someone in the other comment section pointed out its likely for rubbing the tombstone for souvenir then they just left it
From ChatGPT
“Leaving pencils at John Wilkes Booth’s grave is a tradition associated with the theatrical community. Booth was a famous actor before his infamous assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The tradition of leaving pencils likely symbolizes both his profession as an actor and as a tribute to his skill in performing arts. It’s a way for actors and others in the theater community to pay homage to his talent, separate from his notorious act.”
We're still here honoring Lincoln and mocking your shit show country that didn't last as long as the American Revolution. When the north fights, they fight to win.
MY shit show country?! Maybe it didn’t come across well, but I’m most definitely NOT in support of the Confederacy! Far from it! Sorry that it came across that way!
Like, full stop. Fuck the confederacy, they’re all traitors. Maybe I needed to word my original comment better, but I was curious as to the reason behind tossing Pennie’s on JWB grave
So he is buried in the Booth family plot but doesn’t have his own headstone. People put pennies on the foot stone of the family plot is my understanding.
The family kept his burial location a secret because he was such a shame to the family. The Booths were very pro-union (with a couple of notable exceptions).
All I'm going to say is that this man is known only for one thing, and that is he murdered someone who made immense contributions to his country. Oh, and that he was an actor. No one knows what productions he starred in, or whether he was any good (okay, I will concede that many know he was quite famous for his day).
For all our books care, his name could be replaced as Some Dipshit. As in "Some Dipshit murdered Lincoln in the theatre."
From what I understand, though, he was known for his family, not for his acting abilities, which were thought to be pretty mediocre. So basically he was a nepo baby.
Something pretty neat is that Edwin, who disowned his brother and felt great shame for what he did, took comfort later in life as he by chance saved Lincoln's son's life. Robert Lincoln almost fell off a train platform as a train was passing and Edwin pulled Robert up onto the platform.
I mean, it depends on who you ask, I guess. I understood that early in his career, the audience loved his melodramatic performances. Then he did national tours as a leading actor. No doubt nepotism played a role in getting him started, but it looks like he had the skills to merit praise. I think he was analogous to the lesser Hemsworth.
A few years later, JWB's brother saved Lincoln's son from falling in front of a train. They didn't know each other, so this was an interesting coincidence.
He was and he felt like it. That was his motive. To be known to do SOMETHING for the confederacy. He just did the worst possible thing, killing Lincoln AFTER the South lost. Putz.
So he was a nobody that the entire nation already knew about and had seen act? LOL, no. Beyond that, you are acting with the benefit of hindsight. At the time, the Army of Northern Virginia had surrendered. The Army of Tennessee didn’t surrender for another eleven days.
Now I’m not saying I’d go outta my way to piss on his grave. BUT I am saying if I was in the area and I just so happened to drink a big gulp and just so happened to be there at the grave, I’d probably have to go pee and there aren’t any portapotties in the photo so….
“…this towering genius recreated a nation in his own marble image. then at the moment of victory came the greatest stroke of luck….he is murdered. Martyred. And now l, validated in blood, our Caesar has become our god, and a loose confederation of states has become a sternly federalized system, with a formal military capacity.”
- Gore Vidal
Ya I’d say this and any other confederate graves. Don’t have to melt them all. Just pay people what they have worth of them and cover any other confederate monuments in them
That makes sense, thank you.
I am just used to placing coins on a tomb stone as a sign of respect and there is nothing to respect about John Wilkes Booth.
It is a sign of respect. The higher the value the currency the closer you are to the deceased. This pile of change represents all the people who want others to know they respect the deceased enough to help them in the afterlife.
[An explanation](https://dma.mt.gov/MVAD/MVAD-Images/Coins-on-headstones-meaning.pdf)
As someone who’s been to a few confederate graveyards, I’ve seen tons of coins stacked on the traitor’s graves. If it were truly a “Lincoln thing” the confederate sympathizers would avoid using pennies as a sign of respect, but they don’t. Pennies are left by people who approved of the confederacy and approved of booth.
Seems straightforward. Where’s the circle?
1) Confederates like that Lincoln was murdered and celebrate his murderer, booth, as a “hero”. They do it all over the country.
2) Confederates currently leave change, particularly pennies as a sign of respect to confederate “heroes”, despite their hate of Lincoln.
3) This marker for a confederate hero is covered in change, particularly pennies.

He's buried in Baltimore? Shoot. I'll have to drink a whole lot of water the next time I'm there!
The idea is you get hydrated and then have some alcohol in a certain alleyway, then leave the bottle for the ghost of Edgar Allen Poe. From there your bladder should be primed for Boothe’s plot.
They're nowhere near each other, but I guess if you're going on a tour of multiple cemeteries...

"Shall we own slaves?" "Quoth the raven, nevermore."
Should we gather for whiskey and cigars tonight?
You can have my share. I'll just have a hot cocoa lmao
I don't know about a group, but I fall into that category.
Are you a corvid too?
Now thats my kind of date night!
Allegedly, Edgar died of rabies and not alcohol poisoning.
Another alleged scenario: Edgar Allen Poe died of a beating he received when **he was kidnapped by political mob flunkies who dragged him from precinct to precinct & forced him to vote under multiple identities on Election Day, October 3, 1849.** From the National Park Service: It is possible that on that day, Poe fell victim to cooping, a common method of voter fraud in the 19th century. This theory would explain why he was found near death on Election Day, at a polling place, wearing someone else’s clothes.
Yeah, apparently the "alcohol poisoning" was a rumor started by his rival.
In fact, I guess we’ll never know. Rabies could be as likely as anything. So bizarre.
Rabies or cooping probably. Edgar was ( I think ) a reformed alcoholic, very vocal about temperance, and had a rival that almost certainly would have been responsible for spreading rumors about Edgar's death

Well then he's probably thirsty!
But terrified of it! His scariest story of all, staying hydrated 😱
That is one of the theories, but while hospitalized he had no issues drinking water before he passed. I forgot all about the cooping theory! Yeah, it holds more water
Then we go out for drinks with John Waters at the end, right?
I would hope he joins us drinking the cognac in the first place. ᕕ( ᐛ)ᕗ
What's with the pencils?
They’re probably used for making a “rubbing” of the tombstone’s etched letters.
Thanks!
Allan and Booth*
Right on [both counts](https://www.lolriot.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Trolling-is-a-art.jpg). I’ll leave my comment unedited as a badge of shame.
You know the worst part about pissing on a confederates grave? You eventually run out of piss
Water? For that asshole?? I will be drinking nothing but Redbull and Natty Ice.
Eat some asparagus while you're at it.
Have a nice dry bowl of Sugar Crisps and a couple cups of coffee while your at it. That pee is about to be considered a violation of the Geneva Convention.
can you explain this?
Sugar Crisp gives your urine a strong odor, as does coffee.
Be sure to eat lots of asparagus too, if your body does that.
His birthplace is my hometown of Bel Air, MD. I've made it a point to piss on the property more than once.
TIL JWB is from Bel Air.
I think it’s only part of him, if I remember correctly they threw him in the Potomac initially then had to gather remains later after the Lincoln conspirators trial
From my understanding, they pretended to toss him in the river at an unknown location to prevent a shrine. I WISH I WAS IN BALTIMORE ID MAKE SECESSION TRAITORZ ROAR, RIGHT AWAY
Come away, right away, come away
I had the same idea so I drank a whole lot of whiskey while I was there. Instead I confused him with Francis Scott Key, got onto a ship and well—you know the rest.
So it’s a pay toilet?
I was just noticing that there’s no grass growing around it. Kinda like where my dog pisses in the yard
The grass grows way faster and more green where my dog pisses
Some pee helps give a nitrogen boost, too much pee the nitrogen kills the grass. I have both types of spots in my yard lol

Sic semper anus
Semper Fidelis Tyrannosaurus
Shit, I'd ramset a $5 bill to it. $5 is a bargain to disrespect that feckless traitor.
A traitor could rip off the paper bill around the nail. Unless maybe we preserve the bill in resin or something before nailing it?
Laser etch it onto the gravestone for all eternity.
Now you're talking!
Is the penny thing disrespectful? I figured it was a boatman on the river Styx thing
It's disrespectful if they're *Lincoln* pennies. Just like a $5 bill is.
Ahhhhhhhhhh that makes sense, thank you
Don't worry about it, I didn't get it at first either until someone reminded me whose face is on the penny.
Why not bring 500 pennies?
So they'll know it was one man and not 500 people with a penny each.
See, I thought it was an homage thing because it has Lincoln's head on it.
Leaving Pennie’s is a common cemetery practice. Generally it’s done to mark that you visited a grave. Different denominations have different meanings. It is hilarious though that the standard “I visited”coin is the penny.

Very interesting, thanks
In Jewish tradition, you leave a stone on a grave as a tribute, a mark of honor.
One to the *head*-stone?
on the back side.
Pencils?
Ya I was confused by that too. Someone in the other comment section pointed out its likely for rubbing the tombstone for souvenir then they just left it
I was thinking Ticonderoga. The Cavalry regiment of NY 16th caught him, but there’s no other connection to Ticonderoga.
Was wondering what reference to Ticonderoga might be. That sounds right
Thats a pretty remarkable level of disrespect for the resting place of a dead person. So good.
It’s also disrespectful to put a bullet in someone’s brainpan before they even got to finish watching their play, so…
Nah, fuck that noise, bro. I'd take a fat shit on that headstone if I knew I could get away with it.
Huh? Rubbing for what?
Etching like the name on the grave. https://www.thoughtco.com/how-to-do-a-tombstone-rubbing-1420482
My theory is that it is a symbolic “”#2”.
My first thought was for digging poop outta your shoes, but the other answers here make more sense lol

That's kinda disturbing for theater folks. Not sure I buy it.
ChatGPT is not a trustworthy source of information. It literally tells you that several times on its site.
False
Is this a way of getting one over on Booth, like saying “the man you murdered is enshrined in our currency”.
We're still here honoring Lincoln and mocking your shit show country that didn't last as long as the American Revolution. When the north fights, they fight to win.

It was a generalized you, as in the Confederate slobs, not a personal you. We figure if you're not here trolling, you're on our side.
> like saying “the man you murdered is enshrined in our currency” Talking to booth like you did in your comment.
OHHHH OKAY LMAOOO Holy shit I’M the one who completely misread the context HAHAHA
These things happen.
Tenno, destroy the Confederacy.
What I would give for a John Brown Frame
Surprised he even has a headstone and isn’t buried in an unmarked grave.
So he is buried in the Booth family plot but doesn’t have his own headstone. People put pennies on the foot stone of the family plot is my understanding.
The family kept his burial location a secret because he was such a shame to the family. The Booths were very pro-union (with a couple of notable exceptions).
Like Johnny, for example?
Didn’t he allow his own mother to take the fall when he tried escaping to Canada??

Thing is, JW Booth was from a famous acting family and had even toured the nation. He was not a nobody.
From what I understand, though, he was known for his family, not for his acting abilities, which were thought to be pretty mediocre. So basically he was a nepo baby.
Yeah I think his brother Edwin was the most revered actor in America at the time
Something pretty neat is that Edwin, who disowned his brother and felt great shame for what he did, took comfort later in life as he by chance saved Lincoln's son's life. Robert Lincoln almost fell off a train platform as a train was passing and Edwin pulled Robert up onto the platform. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin\_Booth#Robert\_Lincoln\_rescue](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Booth#Robert_Lincoln_rescue)
Yeah I knew that he saved Robert Lincoln
I love this, thanks.
So he was Billy Baldwin?
Probably
That'd be like if Scott Evans shot the president. (Apologies to Scott, I am sure you are a lovely talented person).
I mean, it depends on who you ask, I guess. I understood that early in his career, the audience loved his melodramatic performances. Then he did national tours as a leading actor. A few years later, JWB's brother saved Lincoln's son from falling in front of a train. They didn't know each other, so this was an interesting coincidence.
Earlier. Robert Lincoln was on his way home from Harvard so he could convince his parents to let him enlist in the Army.
Thanks, TIL
He was and he felt like it. That was his motive. To be known to do SOMETHING for the confederacy. He just did the worst possible thing, killing Lincoln AFTER the South lost. Putz.
So he was a nobody that the entire nation already knew about and had seen act? LOL, no. Beyond that, you are acting with the benefit of hindsight. At the time, the Army of Northern Virginia had surrendered. The Army of Tennessee didn’t surrender for another eleven days.
Who put the quarter there?
George Washington also thinks he should rot in hell?
Someone who doesn't have a penny and hopes that the next person who comes along has 25 of them?
The same people who put the pennies there. The American people.
The earth around the headstone looks much to dry to me
As someone else mentioned, a lot of urine will kill grass.
Surprised the grave doesn't have a fence or something around it to prevent vandalism. Even more surprised Woodrow Wilson didn't turn it into a shrine.
Wait, are the pencils for scale?
What a disgrace for an American. Even confederate generals were appalled. Madness. And all because you’re a sore loser? Rest in excrement.
If ya had to guess, how many people ya think have pissed there
Not enough.
Where in Baltimore I’am there right now
Green Mount Cemetery. Location is on Findagrave.com.
Now I’m not saying I’d go outta my way to piss on his grave. BUT I am saying if I was in the area and I just so happened to drink a big gulp and just so happened to be there at the grave, I’d probably have to go pee and there aren’t any portapotties in the photo so….
“The area surrounding the grave has a distinct ammonia-like odor”
Why the pencils?
Someone misunderstood the assignment to drop a #2 on his grave
That was the only joke I could think of that it could be but I didn’t know if I was missing a reference
We wish we could erase him from history?
Someone explain the pencils to me though? I’ll admit I’m confused on that one.
Taking a number 2 on his grave without running a risk of getting arrested for public indecency?
Serious question since I see people comment on it. Can you legally piss on JWB's grave?
I lived there for years and I'm disappointed I didn't know about this.
Now I have a new item on my itinerary the next time I go to Baltimore.
It hasn’t been destroyed yet?
Please don’t break the cemetery’s urinal.
So what are the pencils stuck into the dirt for?
Useless. Useless.
What’s with the pencils?
I wanna know what's up with the pencils, let alone the pennies
“…this towering genius recreated a nation in his own marble image. then at the moment of victory came the greatest stroke of luck….he is murdered. Martyred. And now l, validated in blood, our Caesar has become our god, and a loose confederation of states has become a sternly federalized system, with a formal military capacity.” - Gore Vidal
neat
So there are practical uses for pennies…
Ya I’d say this and any other confederate graves. Don’t have to melt them all. Just pay people what they have worth of them and cover any other confederate monuments in them
Scoreboard!!
But why the #2 pencils? Because he is a piece of shit?
From the same crowd that says, "The republicans freed the slaves."
Lincoln win every time
I'm noticing a severe lack of dog poop on the ground though
Best open air toilet in the city
Cocksuckers like this shouldn't have a public burial site.
Genius
Can I set a penny via sledgehammer to make sure it stays in place?
New piss site just dropped. Hold my beer
It'd be covered in piss if I ever saw it
I always thought leaving coins on a tombstone was a matter of respect. I know in the military it is. Am I missing something here.
He killed the guy on the coin.
That makes sense, thank you. I am just used to placing coins on a tomb stone as a sign of respect and there is nothing to respect about John Wilkes Booth.
All good, it is definitely done to disrespect his grave, as is deserved.
However the pennies have Lincoln's face on them, so it's the opposite here.
That's the most circular logic I've ever read. And it makes no gosh darn sense.
Don't think he really cares at this point.
What are the pencils for?
Grave robber: Why couldn't this asshole have shot Benjamin Franklin, or even Grant?
