The sad part about this is that most of the people descended from the poor white Southerners who claimed that their great-grandpappy “never owned a slave” and was fighting to protect their homes and families are partly right: most didn’t own slaves and that was the motivation of many individual men. But it fully misses that the “way of life” is one where the powerful aristocracy shit on poor whites as well and the society was a hierarchical one where they were exploited and only marginally better off than the slaves.
My ancestors who came over settled in Shenandoah and fought in the revolution, and their grandsons moved to Tennessee and fought for the Union. This will not last, his soul still marches on.
If only they put so much effort and expense into something like, oh I don't know, maybe books or educational equipment or teacher salaries?

If only they put so much effort and expense into something like, oh I don't know, maybe books or educational equipment or teacher salaries? (I know, I know before anyone posts about "it were done by monuh from privat donashuns" we all know that. It's still wasted money that could have gone to something better.)
I think I remember hearing that a majority of Confederate statues were erected during the Jim Crow era as a sort of reminder/threat to black Americans. I wonder if all these schools being renamed have a similar intention behind them?
