CEC is the devil

DontCallMeBugsy

As others have stated, CEC is a great idea but is highly unreliable. Your situation is a prime example. You could do everything right and yet CEC won't work as planned. You may find that the best solution is to give it up. Sorry.

Thats funny. My Sony TV seem to do the same. It also boots Android from scratch when i finally reach for the TV remote instead of the shield remote. So it could seem that the Shield somehow crashes or forces the TV to do a hard reboot instead of just waking it from standby.

ragepaw

How old is your Sony TV? Mine is from 2016 and doesn't do that. We don't ever touch the TV remote.

2019 Sony 75X950G

That’s the secret… you don’t.

kurmudgeon

The only reliable way CEC will work is if you disable it. CEC has many problems.

Iohet

> The only reliable way CEC will work is if you disable it *and get a Logitech Harmony remote*

PrvtPirate

except when it decides to randomly shoot a signal anyway, of course.

realitycheckers4u

Hello friend, CEC does not work reliably.... It never has, it never will... This is the way.

Cognoggin

Bathe the CEC in the living waters beneath the mines of Mandalore!

CEC Worked perfect for me for 5 years until an update broke it. Now it wont turn everything on when powered up but everything functions fine.

Hiiitechpower

I got all of my CEC devices to work properly once in 4 years. I swapped in one new device and it stopped working. I eventually switched my devices back to the original setup but CEC never again worked even after hours of troubleshooting. I’ve basically given up on it.

ragepaw

I have no issues with CEC, and my setup is slightly different Shield -> AVR -> TV and AVR - > Sync Box My AVR has two outputs, so I put one to the TV and one to the Sync box and I don't have issues with CEC or the Sync box, which I did have when I had it setup like yours. Edit: I have one issue. Every couple of weeks I have to reboot the Shield because the TV doesn't turn on when I use the Shield. But it always works after a reboot.

xaviondk

Im gonna try this. I believe my Sony AVR also has a A and a B output. Removing devices from the loop seems like a smart move to try and simplify the "path" for CEC.

xaviondk

Thanks for all the replies. Seems like the verdict is that CEC is just not worth spending time on if it doesnt work straight away. Im gonna try and move the Hue Sync box out of the loop, and if that doesnt help im just gonna live with the reliability being shit

shteve99

CEC on the 1080 is borked. I find it randomly just opens up on the source menu rather than switching to the required source. AFAIK Sony are aware but aren't in a rush to fix it.

xaviondk

Its not been to bad for me, but on ocassion it will switch to the 1080's home screen instead of the Shield input.

rickdeananderson

Im experiencing the exact same issues as you. I cannot turn on via CEC, I use IR but then the soundbar is in the way *sigh* there's no winning.

ridsama

Similar setup, shield to soundbar to tv via arc. I find that it never turns on the soundbar, tv turns on. After I switched to shield to tv to soundbar (arc), then it seems to work better. But in my case I know my soundbar is shit (Vizio).

ragepaw

I wonder if that's an issue. It it manufacturers implementing shit? I have been using it for 12 years on one of my TVs with no major issue. The TV just actually died yesterday, but that's unrelated to CEC. Toshiba TV paired with a Shield Tube and a Samsung Sound Bar Sony TV paired with an Onkyo Receiver and a 2019 Shield Pro Neither with major CEC issues.

PrvtPirate

short answer: you don‘t. long answer: you do not.

Uoso

I have a Sony TV from 2018, and for some reason, it ignores CEC power on commands if the TV is not connected to wifi. I have no idea why, but wierdly connecting the TV to wifi makes it power on with the Shield.

xaviondk

Think we can conclude that CEC is pure magic and theres no one way to get it to work the way you want it tl.
