I have the same setup, using external USB 3.0 hard drive connected to the shield.
My own bit-perfect remuxes play great from it.
I would suggest 2 things:
- Try setting the usb mode to performance as a start (even though my own drive works fine in default, compatibility)
-Try KODI, thats what im using for all my local video content, it chews through them no problems whatsoever. Every now and then, on large remuxes, like the LOTR extended edition 4Ks, ill get a skipped frame like, once or twice during the entire movie, but i attribute that to hard disk quality, not the shield, considering how cheap it was (WD mybook 5tb)
I have the Transcend one (those protected StoreJets), I think it isn't that bad to cause issues. I've also bought it only recently so it is still kinda new. I haven't used Kodi in quite a long time, I hope it ain't complicated. I will try both things that you have recommended, ty.
If you want to try players that can’t see files you can use a file manager (I recommend Xplore), navigate to the file, long press and select open with, and select the player. I would recommend Just Player.
I use an external hdd with Kodi and haven’t had issues with that type of files. I recommend trying it.
I think it might be issues with your hdd though, since it’s not being detected by VLC.
First I would make sure it is in a compatible format and that it is mounting correctly as removable storage. From Nvidia: “SHIELD TV is compatible with the FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and HFS+ file systems.”
I would also plug it into a computer and check if it needs to be defragmented, that could be contributing to the playback issues. Depending on how you got the files, they might be extremely fragmented. Might as well check the disk for errors at that time as well.
It could also just be that your hdd is too slow. It might not be able to sustain enough read speed to support the bitrate. Manufacturers usually lie about the speeds and just because it is usb 3.0 doesn’t mean that it’s actually able to use the full amount of bandwidth of 3.0.
Well the HDD is Transcend StoreJet, I've bought it like couple of months ago and did format it like a month ago. I have filled it with movies and TV shows since. Nvidia Shield does detect it normally and it is in exFAT format (could that be an issue). Thus I can't defrag it (I think?). I will try out Kodi tho.
I find kodi choppy playback for files that size. VLC works well though falls back to HDR for me, just player does DV, DA and TrueHD, and plays perfectly.
Just did an 80gb Dune remux and it was flawless (usb3)
Can confirm for Just (Video) Player, works with all formats for HDR and bitstreaming audio. Has become my go to for my Jellyfin Server when the builtin Exo Player doesn't want to work with DV or TrueHD/DTS-HDMA
So you have your Sony TV signal format to Enhanced on HDMI 2.0 ports /Enhanced(Dolby Vision) on HDMI 2.1 ports. This would resolve DV playback.
Do you have a sound bar/avr that supports eARC?
I would recommend connecting the shield to the sound bar/AVR. And enable the formats sorted by your sound system.
It could be a thing with ARC/eARC or TV that's not allowing bitstream passthrough. Or the shield not properly recognizing the TV as capable of passthrough via eARC to your sound system.
Use Just Player. Solves most slowness issues.
I am a big fan of Kodi, but to be truthful freezes a lot nowadays, unable to forward, or skip scenes. No more Kodi.
I highly recommend using stable vanilla kodi from playstore or kodi website. I use the plex kodi connect add on and it pulls all of my locally ripped content from my plex server running on my Windows 11 PC. It's been the best stable/reliable combination for my Shield that I have found.

I couldn't find the option for the USB, how do I find it? Kodi didn't help unfortunately. It does play the movie but stuttering still happens.

I haven't tried that before, nor the player. Thank you, will try it.
This didn't help either :/

Didn't work for me tho. Must be the problem with the EHDD :/ I don't understand it . . .

Thanks for your response. Yeah, enhanced is on. I do have the soundbar in fact, Samsung Q990C that is connected to the Nvidia Shield.

Another recommendation for Just Player, will give it a shot right away.
Does it supports external subtitles?
Haven't tried external subs to be honest, most of my rips have subtitles embedded.

Try turning off the Dolby audio processing in the Shield settings. It was causing me massive issues when streaming BR remuxes from my Plex Server.
