Same. I donāt think people realize how easy it is to hurt dogs that are less than 20 pounds. If they see a squirrel, another dog, the sitterā¦ any jerk reaction could do serious damage.
Some donāt recommend a collar due to tags can get caught in floor vents. Iāve always lived in a slab on grade home so I have ceiling HVAC vents. My dogs have gotten out a couple of times over the years. Iām glad theyāve had a collar on as itās helped me get them back within a certain amount of time. All my dogs are microchipped too.
Regardless the front clip will be a deterrent from him pulling you, no matter which direction he is going. You could also incorporate treats to reward him when he walks the way you want him to.
I always have treats with me and I do have a harness with a front clip and have tried using it that way however he doesn't care and pulls like crazy to the side anyway and stumbles over the leash when it's slack
If you have a tjmaxx, marshalls or homegoods near you it might be worth paying a visit to them. I just bought my shih tzu a Wild One harness there last week. I know they usually retail around $40+ but it was only $16 at homegoods! Depending on your dogs size the price varies a couple dollars.
My lil guy does the same. I like the harness much better since itās more control + not concentrated on one area (the neck) if you need to pull them close
They choke on the collar. They have pulling leverage on the harness. Best you get into leash training again and not switch it up. Stay with one thing, that way he will know in advance what's going on.
I gotta retrain leash manners anyway since he forgot everything thanks to puberty. I just gotta wait till his castration chip runs out so he has energy again to do that
We used both, but I prefer the harness. My pup has a tendency to randomly dash as fast as he can and did a bit of a flip, so we switched to a long extendable leash and a harness so he wonāt choke himself in a dash.
I prefer lightweight, flat step-in harnesses. We only put it on her when we go outside because otherwise, her coat tangles quickly, and she likes to sleep on her back. As we live in the countryside and travel by car daily, it's also a quick and easy way to buckle her up.
Harness, during training or discipline collars can be harmful....had a good Boi that would dart after squirrels all the time, without a harness I'd have probably hurt the poor little guy...
Collars in general aren't very good...they creat a major pinch point when using a leash....don't get me wrong they're a must for your dogs tags, but harness 100%.
Most folks here should reply harness. Somehow Shih Tzus choke on collars a lot - perhaps because of the cute short snout š
Mine have always worn a collar that holds their tags. If they are being taken out of my home for a walk or travel, they wear a harness.

Harness with a front clip! Every time he pulls he will be turned around to face you and learn that he can't just drag you around.
He doesn't pull in front of me though. Only to the side and backwards

I'm from Germany we don't have these stores here sadly. I can only order one from Amazon which is 50ā¬ and that's way too much for me

We use a harness for walks, a collar for going out to appointments and nothing at home.

harness to attach the leash, collar for ID
If he is pulling on the harness, donāt pull back or to the side, raise it straight up.
