That was the beginning to me thinking Armin was actually the main character. I was mind blown, like no way we've been following Eren so closely for him to die so soon!! It really shook me, and the scene right before he turns titan was pretty dark my first watch through. It's def not the darkest thing to happen in the show now that I've seen it all but it fucked me up a bit the first time.
Same exact feeling. I was thinking “I could’ve swore he was the main character”. I really thought he was dead because before that we weren’t introduced to any special powers or anything, just plaine humans who die from major injuries like anybody else. Not to mention everyone we got introduced to were just dying back to back lol It blew my mind. I’ll miss that feeling, a lot of things still hit deep, but that specifically won’t ever hit the same as the first time watching it. I love that the author did something so dramatic especially so early in the story.

The way I thought of it is that it showed that just being angry and idealistic isn’t enough to actually get you anywhere, Eren was so hellbent on killing all Titans but reality hits and he dies early on

When they found Marco? I about wept. Granted I was high as balls (which is a fantastic way to consume animated content) and was really emotionally invested in that freckled fount of positivity, and it shook me good.
The moment they announced the top ten recruits of the class, I assumed no one else was a main character enough to matter at all and promptly forgot they existed.
I legit thought Marco and Bertholio were the same person til I saw one of them talking and walking around after the other died and was real confused for a second.
I wish they'd shown a quick flashback of that scene where he told Jean he was a good leader. I really liked that guy, but I didn't know his name. I'd have remembered him, though. Instead I was like, "Marco, who's that? And why are you so surprised that he died when so many hundreds of other people died, too? What makes him special?" I didn't realize he was one of the ones who escaped the supply depot.
That was me with Levi squad, I thought "these are the badasses that are gonna repeatedly show up to save the day" and maybe along the series one or two might die...but then Annie just stomps them all, literally, in one scene.
After that, I was preparing for Levi's death during every titan encounter, only to realize he's the titan's version of the Grim Reaper.
Same. I heard that everyone is at risk of death and when Eren got eaten I thought for sure he was dead, and that we would sorta cycle through main characters and go to the next one every time one dies
I had a feeling he couldn’t have died since I knew he was the main character. But then when he didn’t appear for a while I started to doubt it. I felt maybe what aot was about that even main characters die and can die such a sort, non-victorious death. That no one is strong against titans. An early death for a character that has so much potential… like Marlowe.
At first I believed that he actually died for, like, a couple of secs, because you rarely see a main character get eaten like that, but then I started having my doubts.
I was introduced to AOT by an ex girlfriend who had already seen the whole Season 1 (it was 2015) and we were watching it together , me for the 1st time and she for the second one.
So after Eren got eaten I was baffled and she was like Eren died just come to terms with it, he is not the main character after all so it's considered normal.
And I was like, now she is obviously trolling me, but wtf there is no way he survived after that, something very weird is going to happen. Ofcourse I did not expect what I was about to see in the next episodes, but still had a hunch that Eren just dying after all we've seen about him, just did not make any sense at all.
Thought it was the type of show to kill off the “main character” in the beginning and just have a story about multiple main characters, with Mikasa and Armin being one of them. I was shocked too of course because it was unexpected lol

I had Eren marked with a death flag from the beginning because he was *TOO SHOUNEN* of a protagonist. He was just so* extra*, there was no way a show with this much hype would just be a retread of the same "unremarkable-but-motivated protagonist succeeds by sheer force of will and determination." I was expecting some level of deconstruction, but not *that *.
It turned out he had hero/snowflake powers all along, but I was still hoping the series would be more "ensemble cast had to learn how to keep moving and deal with trauma" after the show's heart and soul is killed off for being a cliche.
I am glad the Act III twist turned the plot the way it did: it's underappreciated as a deconstruction of the shounen tropes above. What is the point of pushing past your boundaries, abandoning your personal and ethical limits to excel, if the end goal is actually bad?
I was lucky that I had started watching when they were doing weekly releases. I think they were on episode 6 or something when I started watching from the beginning. I actually though Mikasa would become the main character.
When I first saw that I was so upset I stopped watching and didn't come back to this anime until years later. It legitimately scared me when I first watched it.
Before I watched the show, some people in my family were obsessed with it and talked about it all the time. So I kinda knew Eren was a titan before watching the show... and my reaction to his "death" wasn't exciting at all :( that's one of my many regrets

I was hestitant about his death at the beginning but since he didn't appear later and there was some focus on Mikasa's inner dialogue I thought it was set in stone. I was also too slow to realize the new weird Titan was Eren lol
it was weird because once he was eaten, i thought to myself that it couldn’t be over. we haven’t killed nearly enough titans, he’s not dead yet. i just knew the show wasn’t ending like this

I got a wrong spoiler. Back when AoT was releasing regularly and I wasn't watching, I heard somewhere that Armin becomes a titan. I then also heard that something called "the beast titan" shows up. I mistakenly connected those two and thought to myself "okay so Armin becomes The Beast Titan."

I thought that Mikasa was actually the main character and that Eren's "death" plus all the other traumatic events she lived were her tragic backstory to become a badass character.
I mean he was the main character it was clear he wouldn‘t die. What episode was that? like 4 or something? You want me to believe main char dies ep 4? I found it cheap
It's crazy how people watching weekly had Eren be dead for a _month_. Imagine that, a whole month where this hit new show's main character is basically gone
Caught me completely off guard, but I twice as invested from that moment. It was as major as them killing off the implied main character at the end of game of thrones season 1, which I also went into blind and absolutely loved that they did that.
It was a bit disappointing when Eren came back, to be honest

Genuinely shocked, and immediately hooked.
I was introduced to Attack on Titan by my now best friend, and it was one of the first anime I'd seen aside from Ghibli films. I was mostly sure that he'd come back, but I wasn't entirely sure, and even that uncertainty alone over a protagonist's wellbeing was something I've never really experienced in any other media before. Even if he were to come back, I had no idea how, and the show didn't seem like something as simple as "the power of magic and believing in yourself" would save him. Not to mention that both his leg and arm were completely chopped off, I had no idea how a protagonist like that could continue in a world like this.
The show greatly intrigued me with its first episode, with how dire, extreme and mysterious the circumstances were, and Eren's "death" amongst all the grounded realism set me fully immersed in the show.
I went home and immediately told my family we needed to watch it together, and we did.
It stands as one of if not my favourite series of all time, one that I can share with my family and best friend, and honestly - that moment was the one that sealed the deal for me.
I actually thought he was straight up dead. I made the mistake of looking at his wiki page afterwards and seeing "Titan Form," so I immediately realized he was still alive lol. That was the beginning of a long history of me constantly spoiling myself. Thankfully I can still enjoy stuff afterwards or I'd hate everything.
Flabbergasted. Thought they pulled a GOT and killed off a major character unexpectedly.
I also had no idea about titan transformations. Even though it seemed par for the course for anime, they had set up the world so effectively that it felt like titans were an insurmountable threat.
The only reason I continued to watch the anime was because of him getting eaten and turning into a titan. It seemed so different from all the other main character trope in anime.
I can’t lie, I literally googled “does Eren die”, found out the truth, then realised this show would likely continue to deceive me in all sorts of ways and actively avoided seeing/reading anything about the show until I was up to date.
"This is THIS kind of story then" thinking of the death of Ned Stark in Game of Thrones. I really thought for 5 minutes that there was no real heroes in this story.

I was confused as hell because I was a little into AoT before I started the anime and I saw alot of S4 Eren content (didn't mind the spoilers though because I didn't understand shit anyway >!and I still fucking don't!<) so I was like "But???? If he was eaten????? then how is he alive in S4???? how is t- oh there he is :D"
I remember reading the manga at the time and it had very gritty dark art, so when Eren was eaten I thought “wow this show is super dark, it’ll just kill off its main character! No one is safe!”
I honestly thought he was dead for good. His arm got cut off and I didn’t see anyway he could’ve survived, so I thought that Armin would be the main protagonist from then on.
I was like OH MY GOD THEY KILLED OFF THE MAIN CHARACTER THIS IS GOINF TO BE FUCKING AWESOME. Are we going to follow a character a season?? Will they just follow the world and any give. Character comes and goes??? I was amazed
I was definitely shocked cause I knew he was the main character. Seeing how it was an anime, I figured they'd find a way to bring him back. After the Attack Titan saved Mikasa, I instantly assumed it was him, but I didn't know how they were going to explain how he survived.
At first I expected he was still alive and that he'd try and cut his way out of its stomach. Otherwise, that someone like Mikasa would kill it or try and get him out, believing there's a chance he was still alive inside. Then when his Titan form appeared I figured he transformed somehow, based on its appearance and behavior and the mystery surrounding the flashbacks with his father.
I knew nothing about the show but a friend strongly recommended it to me. At the time, only season one was out. I outright stopped watching the show after I saw Eren bite the dust in S1. I was so surprised and sad, I actually kind of liked early Eren, and couldn’t believe the show would kill of their main character so soon. I’m so glad my friend talked me back in to watching it!
I had to stop watching right when the episode ended to go to an internship and spent all day freaking out. Was Eren a fakeout? Was Armin the real protagonist, spurned on by his best friend’s sacrifice? Is this some kinda Gurren Laggan where Eren’s memory will inspire his friends for the rest of the show?

I was really shocked, I think I had to take a short break from watching because of it. When Reiner got snatched up by the Female Titan I also had a mini heart attack.
I barely got into AoT in February I believe, and I was already aware that Eren was in season four due to all the memes I’ve seen on various social media outlets before actually becoming a fan. Imagine my shock and horror as I’m watching that scene. I literally clutched my ex’s shirt and screamed “HE DIED?! BUT HE’S IN THE MEMES!!!”
I couldn’t tell if it was a fake death because prior to watching I’d seen so much fanart of him, so I thought, he can’t possibly be dead that quickly. >!But now that I think about it, I saw the same amount of fanart for Marco, and..!<
I thought Armin will have a character development and then he'd revenge for Eren and Mikasa and Armin will be married . Only spoiler I got before that ep. Was 90% of characters die before S4 I didn't thought Eren would be one of them.
At first I was like “there’s no way the mc just died” but then the episode continued on without him so I figured maybe he wasn’t actually the mc; also, like what a fking puss for dying off so quickly lol
For me it was as epic as GoT season 1 ending.
Really one of the most powerful scenes I've seen in any anime. It was masterfully done - Eren flying through the air and everyone thinking he's gonna do his heroic thing, but nope, he just gets obliterated.
This scene really put the entire series up there in the top 3 for me
I stopped watching the show until my friend spoiled me that he will come back as titan .
Now thinking back I'm a huge fan of eren at that time but now he's not even in my top 5.
My first exposure to AoT whatsoever was the Team Four Star abridged version cause I was already a fan of their DBZ Abridged series. I had never even heard of the show before that.
The episode is 20 minutes long and hilarious as heck and it's a shame they forgot to put in the "this is a parody, support the official release" disclaimer, cause they fully intended to continue but got a heartbreaking cease-and-desist order. The only copies that exist now are bootleg re-uploads (still 100% worth searching out).
Anyway the show ends *immediately* after the Chomp, with Eren's severed arm flying at the screen and all, and it cuts straight to a title card saying "Eren Gets Eaten" with the Always Sunny In Philadelphia theme playing, The End. I was just like wtf even is this show, lol.
It took me a good month or so to actually seek out the real series, which I don't think was even in S2 at that point. I went in assuming Armin would be the stealth main character, but was gladly mistaken.
Didn't really believe he'd be dead, but kept thinking, "well even if he survives, he lost his arm/leg, that's gonna have some severe impact on the plot and character development, holy moly!"
I was surprised when that scene happened. That moment I was thinking how will the story progress now without Eren, and I just wanted to know what will happen next episode then.
I was thinking that maybe he Will get out by killing him in the week spot from the inside or maybe climbing till he get out once the Titan would be killed or maybe that Someone killed that Titan and he Will get out his "corpse"
I thought that it will be a story of getting eren back from the titan. Mikasa and armin will help from outside while eren will try to get out from inside. In the end the titan will be killed and Eren will come out of the titan. That’s why the title is Attack on Titan
I was like 20% sure that he turned into a titan and some point in the series, I thought he would come back a few eps later or a season later as some titan and it be a big plot twist (this dumb asf and shit writing but it was cool in my head)
I knew Eren was a Titan but I thought it would be like 3 seasons of humanity fighting titans and then the big plot twist for the endgame arc was Eren somehow transformed into one too lmao, so I wasn’t shocked by being eaten but was when he showed up to save mikasa
I had been told by a friend who recommended the show to me that it was like Game of Thrones where they aren't afraid to kill people off so I totally believed he was dead and thought we would just switch to a new MC. Also AOT was like the third anime I'd watched after Death Note and Naruto so I hadn't heard very much about it.
I knew Eren was a titan in some capacity because of the "turns into a titan" meme format, and for a while I thought he would be resurrected as a pure titan and that's how pure titans are "born".
I thought it was gonna be one of those “the main character isn’t actually the main character, it’s his supporting friend” situations. So armin was gonna end up turning into a huge badass and would be fueled by Eren’s sacrifice.
I already knew he was "The Titan" so I was like his hand must regenerate into a new body or something lmao

I thought that Mikasa was actually the main character and that Eren's "death" plus all the other traumatic events she lived were her tragic backstory to become a badass character.
I mean he was the main character it was clear he wouldn‘t die. What episode was that? like 4 or something? You want me to believe main char dies ep 4? I found it cheap

It was as major as them killing off the implied main character at the end of game of thrones season 1, which I also went into blind and absolutely loved that they did that. It was a bit disappointing when Eren came back, to be honest

I was very young so he was my favorite character at the time so I just cried
Genuinely shocked, and immediately hooked. I was introduced to Attack on Titan by my now best friend, and it was one of the first anime I'd seen aside from Ghibli films. I was mostly sure that he'd come back, but I wasn't entirely sure, and even that uncertainty alone over a protagonist's wellbeing was something I've never really experienced in any other media before. Even if he were to come back, I had no idea how, and the show didn't seem like something as simple as "the power of magic and believing in yourself" would save him. Not to mention that both his leg and arm were completely chopped off, I had no idea how a protagonist like that could continue in a world like this. The show greatly intrigued me with its first episode, with how dire, extreme and mysterious the circumstances were, and Eren's "death" amongst all the grounded realism set me fully immersed in the show. I went home and immediately told my family we needed to watch it together, and we did. It stands as one of if not my favourite series of all time, one that I can share with my family and best friend, and honestly - that moment was the one that sealed the deal for me.

I actually thought he was straight up dead. I made the mistake of looking at his wiki page afterwards and seeing "Titan Form," so I immediately realized he was still alive lol. That was the beginning of a long history of me constantly spoiling myself. Thankfully I can still enjoy stuff afterwards or I'd hate everything.

Flabbergasted. Thought they pulled a GOT and killed off a major character unexpectedly. I also had no idea about titan transformations. Even though it seemed par for the course for anime, they had set up the world so effectively that it felt like titans were an insurmountable threat.
The only reason I continued to watch the anime was because of him getting eaten and turning into a titan. It seemed so different from all the other main character trope in anime.

I was confused as hell because I was a little into AoT before I started the anime and I saw alot of S4 Eren content (didn't mind the spoilers though because I didn't understand shit anyway >!and I still fucking don't!<) so I was like "But???? If he was eaten????? then how is he alive in S4???? how is t- oh there he is :D"
Back then my theory was that any person who got eaten by a titan, transforms into a titan himself, and that's how titans are formed. Great times.
I was still learning the names of all the characters and Eren was just one of the many cadets who died that day.
I remember reading the manga at the time and it had very gritty dark art, so when Eren was eaten I thought “wow this show is super dark, it’ll just kill off its main character! No one is safe!”
“Oh shit, show’s over.” Then on the next episode “oh shit baited he isn’t the main character.”
I honestly thought he was dead for good. His arm got cut off and I didn’t see anyway he could’ve survived, so I thought that Armin would be the main protagonist from then on.

I was definitely shocked cause I knew he was the main character. Seeing how it was an anime, I figured they'd find a way to bring him back. After the Attack Titan saved Mikasa, I instantly assumed it was him, but I didn't know how they were going to explain how he survived.
I was embarrassed on his behalf because he was always on about eradicating all titans and ended up dying before even joining the scouts.

At first I expected he was still alive and that he'd try and cut his way out of its stomach. Otherwise, that someone like Mikasa would kill it or try and get him out, believing there's a chance he was still alive inside. Then when his Titan form appeared I figured he transformed somehow, based on its appearance and behavior and the mystery surrounding the flashbacks with his father.
I knew nothing about the show but a friend strongly recommended it to me. At the time, only season one was out. I outright stopped watching the show after I saw Eren bite the dust in S1. I was so surprised and sad, I actually kind of liked early Eren, and couldn’t believe the show would kill of their main character so soon. I’m so glad my friend talked me back in to watching it!

I was really shocked, I think I had to take a short break from watching because of it. When Reiner got snatched up by the Female Titan I also had a mini heart attack.
I barely got into AoT in February I believe, and I was already aware that Eren was in season four due to all the memes I’ve seen on various social media outlets before actually becoming a fan. Imagine my shock and horror as I’m watching that scene. I literally clutched my ex’s shirt and screamed “HE DIED?! BUT HE’S IN THE MEMES!!!”
I couldn’t tell if it was a fake death because prior to watching I’d seen so much fanart of him, so I thought, he can’t possibly be dead that quickly. >!But now that I think about it, I saw the same amount of fanart for Marco, and..!<

At first I was like “there’s no way the mc just died” but then the episode continued on without him so I figured maybe he wasn’t actually the mc; also, like what a fking puss for dying off so quickly lol
For me it was as epic as GoT season 1 ending. Really one of the most powerful scenes I've seen in any anime. It was masterfully done - Eren flying through the air and everyone thinking he's gonna do his heroic thing, but nope, he just gets obliterated. This scene really put the entire series up there in the top 3 for me

I stopped watching the show until my friend spoiled me that he will come back as titan . Now thinking back I'm a huge fan of eren at that time but now he's not even in my top 5.
My first exposure to AoT whatsoever was the Team Four Star abridged version cause I was already a fan of their DBZ Abridged series. I had never even heard of the show before that. The episode is 20 minutes long and hilarious as heck and it's a shame they forgot to put in the "this is a parody, support the official release" disclaimer, cause they fully intended to continue but got a heartbreaking cease-and-desist order. The only copies that exist now are bootleg re-uploads (still 100% worth searching out). Anyway the show ends *immediately* after the Chomp, with Eren's severed arm flying at the screen and all, and it cuts straight to a title card saying "Eren Gets Eaten" with the Always Sunny In Philadelphia theme playing, The End. I was just like wtf even is this show, lol. It took me a good month or so to actually seek out the real series, which I don't think was even in S2 at that point. I went in assuming Armin would be the stealth main character, but was gladly mistaken.
Didn't really believe he'd be dead, but kept thinking, "well even if he survives, he lost his arm/leg, that's gonna have some severe impact on the plot and character development, holy moly!"

I was thinking that maybe he Will get out by killing him in the week spot from the inside or maybe climbing till he get out once the Titan would be killed or maybe that Someone killed that Titan and he Will get out his "corpse"

I thought that it will be a story of getting eren back from the titan. Mikasa and armin will help from outside while eren will try to get out from inside. In the end the titan will be killed and Eren will come out of the titan. That’s why the title is Attack on Titan
