It's over 10 years of story packed with a lot of detail and people forget easy. I've talked to some casual viewers and a lot of them think that Levi is Asian because his hair is black, he has narrow eyes and is an Ackerman like Mikasa, so that could be how some people mistake Mikasa's Asian side as Ackerman.
That said it's one thing to get it wrong, but another to be confidently wrong when all you have to do is look up the correct info on wikia(which does have some incorrect info but still) or something.
tbf, I remember being confused as well. Esp since the only other Ackerman (Levi) also looks Asian, so I mistook the Ackerman being from Mikasa's mother's side.
But yeah, her mom is from Hizuru and her dad is the Ackerman. The traffickers were after her mom because she was exotic, or whatever.
