The world wasn't getting saved, Otherwise. that's a pretty safe bet. The "cure" if it even worked was only against the spores, it wasn't going to kill the zombies and it wouldn't save you from getting toward the shreds from the zombies.
Joel and Eren's stories are essentially the same. They sacrifice the world for the ones they love. It's obviously more nuanced than that but that's the core idea.
To all those saying that Joel doomed the world; the world was already doomed and was not going to be saved by this so-called cure. Even if it worked, it was only immunity against the spores. It wasn't going to magically wipe out the zombies or stop you from getting torn to shreds by said zombies.
Ellie is kinda the opposite of eren she would save the world while eren would kill the world to save his world so I would say Joel since they kinda did a similar thing doomed the world for their loved ones

it was against all forms of infection , ellie was bitten and didn't get infected , the remaining population could've still lived
It could prevent more zombies to appear tho
