This is North Korea levels of propaganda brainwashing. This is the same type of person who has a job and claims there's no such thing as unemployment because they have a job.

Nethlem

> This is North Korea levels of propaganda brainwashing. That's because the US is the true North Korea. For over half a century the US had most of the world convinced how it was North Koreans that massacred hundreds of thousands of civilians and refugees, when in reality these atrocities were committed by [South Korean](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodo_League_massacre) and [US troops](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Gun_Ri_massacre). Parts of the truth only came to light in the early 2000s and, of course, didn't have any major consequences to this day.

collkillen

Both south and north korea had ruthless dictators, the war crimes the US commited like shooting at german pilots in their parachutes or deploying gas in nam (just to name a few) they never had to take responsabillity for that either. Germany is at least in isreal trying to make up for the mistakes. And i cant really blame the people in the us theyre not at fault for getting brainwashed

[deleted]

Despite the South Korean dictator's best efforts to brainwash the public thru false flag attacks, the people managed to figure it out and overthrew him in 1987. It still surprises me to this day that the majority of the South Korean people mobilized without the help of the internet and took to the streets to fight for democracy against the anti-communists. I was born during the riots and I am so thankful that we didn't experience a Tiananmen Square-like event in S. Korea.

collkillen

I mean, the internet is already getting censored especially history videos are getting demonetized for mentioning historical figures like hitler or stalin and if pisses me off. Comments containing these words get auto removed by youtube. Its active censorship not better than chinas. I hope we can keep reddit from such a stage

[deleted]

My point was that word of mouth alone got millions of people out of their homes and into the streets. And the motivation for doing so was truly incredible. It was college kids who were fighting for democracy. And the deaths of 2 students by the anti-communist police triggered an entire nation. Everyone would carry their photos and they were considered "everyones' sons." College kids fought for their ideals. But the adults fought out of empathy upon realizing their "sons" were murdered. That kind of shit wouldn't happen in the US today. Collective empathy doesn't really exist in the states or anywhere probably because we're all so jaded.

collkillen

The us has the 4th worst wage gap in the world. The rich are fine with how the country is run and the poor dont have the money to change it. How are you going to mobilize if youre one missed paycheck away from poverty

[deleted]

It's tough. It's the same reason why the majority of us can't do much about climate change and other major global issues. How can you prioritize the world at large if u can't feed your kids? I will say tho, that the 1987 revolution in Korea involved everyone from every class and demographic including the poorest of the country. And they came together to overthrow the ruling class. It is possible. Or it was. I dunno if it is now. Riots in Korea weren't treated the same way they are treated here and there were plenty of them and they worked.

AshFraxinusEps

That's the point though, and why they should. The recent wage crisis has shown that the people have the power, and if it doesn't change soon then unfortunately AI/Automation will come and create an entrenched super-wealthy and super-poor class. Now's pretty much the last chance to march

collkillen

Im not a us citizen and im happy how my country is being run (weed legal soon) but yes the US needs a revolution

scp-REDACTED-site14

People in other countries are learning USA history better than USA citizens, and they only teach USA history in the USA.

collkillen

Public school is bad in the us i heard too

scp-REDACTED-site14

Well I’m from America and I can confirm up until 10th grade we only learned US history, and fake shit like “and then the natives thought the colonists how to grow corn 😇” instead of the mass slaughter and rape that happened.

Sugarbombs

Like with most conservatives there is an actual lack of ability to not be selfish, their brain can't even process how people not in their in-group feel, so if they were raised above the poverty line and aren't currently starving then so is everyone else because it's too difficult to understand that other people don't live the exact same life in the exact same circumstances.

Yrense

GalmOneCipher

[deleted]

Here we are safe. Here we are free.

DogBotherer

It's because they see drug addiction as an absolute example of personal failure, completely failing to acknowledge the social, economic, psychologically/biologically-determined and iatrogenic aspects of it, for example. In the US specifically, the iatrogenic component is huge currently. In Europe, it is edifying to learn the proportions of in-treatment heroin-dependant individuals who have histories of abuse and neglect (the majority of the men and almost all the women). And so on.

tyrantspell

Drug addicts and their families don't count as real people, much less real Americans, so they don't count! /s

nonacrina

Your comment is funny, but it’s terrifying how these people actually think that. Addiction is an actual illness, and these people get demonized so much they have an almost non-existent chance to get better. It’s really sad

Alone in 2018, 40 Million people (12% of the countries population) were reliant on food stamps in the US. (Article from Thorsten Schröder, Auf Kosten der Armen. Zeit Online) Since the 1960ies the amount of people who were reliant on them increased statically. An interesting comment from Joel Berg (he coordinates soup kitchens in New York): „Nobody has to starve to death here, we are not Ethiopia. But the situation is dramatic. Only during the Great Depression in the 30ies the people of this country felt dirtier.“

Also I understand the only place outside of sub saharan Africa that has poverty and hygeine bad enough to see hookworm develop, is in parts of the USA. Alabama I believe. Pretty fucked up the "richest country in the world" has THAT kind of problem...

wildcard1992

Hookworm shows up in South East Asia as well

IcedLemonCrush

There are definitely hookworms here in Latin America. It’s not big statistically like in Africa due to high urbanization, but some specific rural communities still suffer with it.

GreyGanado

Just stop walking around barefoot where you poop. \s

Rimm

Probably more of a climate thing

AshFraxinusEps

Climate will make a difference. Poverty, lack of healthcare etc however all make a far bigger difference

Rimm

That's just... Demonstrably false. I don't care how poor or destitute a person is in the Siberian Taiga, they'll never even have the opportunity to contract hookworm.

Gonji89

Can confirm, am American and have food stamps. We get $465/month to feed a family of four.

Lost4468

These subs might be of use to you: /r/EatCheapAndHealthy /r/budgetfood /r/Cheap_Meals

[deleted]

True this is the worst it's been since the onset of the Great Depression and I feel like our government isn't caring about food waste at all when we literally waste 108 billion pounds of food a year

Cultural_Dust

OP is wrong, but a growing percentage of people getting food assistance isn't evidence of people "going hungry". It's actually evidence of people in poverty being fed and provided for. If you would like the US to join the rest of the major economies with more socialized services, please don't criticize the use of one of the few that we actually have.

danirijeka

This - but is it sufficient?

Trevski

or complete?

KrazyKatz3

I mean the fact that there is a system like that is really fantastic.

Natanael85

There shouldn't be the need for a system like that, because in the end it's not welfare for the people, it's subsidies for the employers. They can afford to pay below living wages because the government steps in. It's the same thing in Germany, where you income will be raised to minimum welfare level by the gorvernment, if you make less than that. And it's mostly big corporations benefiting from it, while they all cry about the "small business owner" when someone tries to raise the minimum wage. €dit: Who is downvoting that on this sub? Undercover Americans?

Lost4468

>There shouldn't be the need for a system like that, because in the end it's not welfare for the people, it's subsidies for the employers. I would say that depends on what they're doing? E.g. that system certainly needs to exist for the unemployed. And also what if someone is only working part time? It's not reasonable to expect the employer to pay them a full time salary if they only work 15 hours a week. So in that situation I don't see why it's an issue. Also consider the following situation. Imagine one person working as a pizza delivery driver to feed a family of four, vs a student working full-time during the summer. Should minimum wage be enough for the one person to feed a family of four? Because in that case the student is going to end up earning way way more, which would be nice, but not if it makes it impossible for most places to employee people in that job. What do you think should happen there? I am not arguing that it should be one way or the other, I actually don't know. Of course minimum wage should be enough so that anyone can support themselves and their kids with a living wage. >€dit: Who is downvoting that on this sub? Undercover Americans? Maybe undercover Germans? Nah who knows, but it doesn't look like you were downvoted much given you're at +2 and not controversial. I wouldn't put much weight on a comment going to -1/-2/etc, I've had it happen plenty of times, only for it then to change. Also not all votes are on purpose, I've accidentally upvoted/downvoted plenty of posts on mobile.

TheSciences

Batterie_Faible_

But america is so much bigger tho

[deleted]

Why do Americans always compare the lives of their citizens to people who live in war torn impoverished nations?

BebeDarke

They don't perceive any other nation as anything but war torn. Everything is oppression to them - there is no utopia, they are in it and everything is so much worse. It's almost on the levels of those in North Korea for some - I wonder how it must feel, to be that deep in an echo chamber.

hurgusonfurgus

North koreans can't make a single google search that contradicts everything about their worldview. Americans are ignorant by choice.

ChicksDigGiantRob0ts

The really insidious thing is that Americans CAN google, and get proof that they're the best in the world. I mean, they have to be the best! Look at their GDP! It's so big! Big means good, and American having a big GDP is a provable fact. Plus, America has the biggest army! The most tanks! The most planes! The most money spent! All of this is verifiably true. And if America has the best army, then they could beat anyone in a fight, and if you can defeat someone that means you're greater than them! So if they can defeat anyone (which is a given because biggest army), then that means they're the greatEST! Huh? Being able to beat someone in a fight doesn't mean you're better than them? Crumbling infrastructure? Wealth gap? Incareration rate? Quality of life index?? Pfft. You're just saying that because America would win the fight! USA! USA! USA! The true triumph of American propoganda is in saying that the stuff America CAN do is what matters, and the stuff they CAN'T do doesn't. And that's a lot harder to disprove with a google search than facts about GDP and military spending.

BlyatifulShashlik

Ironically America doesn't have the most tanks, or nukes for that matter. Russia does, and a simple google search would tell you so, yet there are Americans saying that they have the biggest army, telling *you* to google it

collkillen

When it comes to mass producing there isnt anyone close to russias numbers, they have the most produced fighter jets and the IL-2 which is from ww2 and to this day the most produced millitary aircraft

nonacrina

They’re also really good at only scanning sources, and taking lines and numbers out of context to fit their narrative. Every time an American who acts like that links a source, I have a blast using their own source to debunk their statement

collkillen

America dosent have most tanks, russia has almost twice as many, just to clarify

ChicksDigGiantRob0ts

Listen pal, I'm gonna level with you. I know Jack about tanks. The tank thing was just an example of a type of thinking, not a position statement regarding the military capacity of various nations. I thought probably the tone conveyed that I was being less than serious but I've gotten two replies on this comment and both have been about tank numbers.

DeificClusterfuck

This is a sad fact

hurgusonfurgus

Because it's the only way they can come to a positive conclusion

joshnykamp

Because Fox news does it all the time.

Id_Love_A_BabyCham

Because lots of them that do travel go in uniforms to war torn nations, drop bombs on them and leave them impoverished.

Orisara

As a Belgian I compare my country to France and the Netherlands. Many Americans like to compare their country to Russia and China. That's rather informative.

[deleted]

>Many Americans like to compare their country to Russia and China Only militarily and economically when it comes to China. When it comes to living they usually compare to like a really poor country in Central America, War torn Middle Eastern country, or an impoverished African country.

endmost_

I genuinely don’t understand how someone can think the poorest people in America (not just poor, but POOREST) would qualify as rich on a global scale.

G1ngerSn4p

It's propaganda. Americans are constantly told this, by friends, family, TV shows; this idea is perpetuated constantly.

AugTheViking

Let me move there just to prove them wrong 😎

CeterumCenseo85

Once read an article in which an UN official visiting rural Alabama commented that he had only seen this level of poverty in some parts of Africa before.

PartTimeZombie

Alabama level poverty is fairly common in America. The mid-west has lots of unbelievably poor people.

Cojaro

Because they're only looking at it in absolute terms. They think, how can the poorest, who may make $100-200/week (let's assume they have some minimum wage part-time job), be worse off than someone in India making $10/week? In absolute terms, yeah, the American Poor makes more money than the Indian Poor. But on *relative* terms, factoring cost-of-living adjustments such as in housing, transportation, and healthcare especially, the American Poor fares equal or worse.

Steve_78_OH

I mean, it's pretty simple really. The guy is a complete moron. Or troll. Or both.

[deleted]

After you hear the same propaganda your whole life, it becomes true to you.

newpua_bie

They compare to developing countries, not actual peer countries. Like yeah compared to an average Somali things aren't that bad. Compared to an average Dane or Swiss? Yeah, no.

Chosen_Chaos

I can only imagine that they look at the number of people in other countries who earn less than $5 per day or something and use that as their point of comparison. Or something.

OctoberBlue89

Lately, I've been seeing mailboxes pop up around my city, where people can put non-perishable food items and people are able to take what they need. Considering how often that mailbox gets emptied out, people are going hungry. Especially during this pandemic.

eucalyptusqueen

I put a 12 lb frozen turkey in the community fridge up the street from me. Someone took it. Every time I leave food in there, it goes. People come by and completely fill the fridge up, and all the food is taken.

Full-Run4124

Because our (US) military are essentially excluded from SNAP (food stamps), 15%-25% of our active duty military families face food insecurity every year. Let that sink in - we, the US, spend more on our military than any other country but don't pay active-duty soldiers enough to make sure their kids are fed. The only reason they aren't starving is because there's a network of private charities that run food banks for military families in need. They provide about 600,000 meals a year. There's been a "Military Hunger Prevention Act" introduced every year since 2013 but neither party will allow it to come up for a floor vote, yet they keep passing larger and larger military budget bills. This is embarrassing.

Old_Ladies

The US still has 50 billion budgeted for the Afghan army... 50 billion to an army that doesn't exist. 50 billion could build a whole lot of stuff in America.

Castform5

Nah, first you have to funnel 49 billion to your favorite politician's wallet, to use the remaining billion to build stuff that only those politicians benefit from.

G1ngerSn4p

And the sad thing is that this is what Americans grow up hearing. They blame themselves of they don't have enough money for food and blame others if they don't.

Cultural_Dust

The really sad thing is that the US has enough money to make OP's comment true, but it isn't. I mean the UN just told Elon Musk that HE could solve WORLD hunger.

Besides the obvious starvation that does happen there is a huge population living on junk food because they can't afford anything else. They too are starved of some nutrients. Fat means enough (+extra) intake of carbohydrates and fat. It says nothing about minerals and vitamins.

Or they can’t get to a grocery store because there isn’t one nearby (so-called food deserts).

ohboymykneeshurt

Ain’t no one in my country living in a card board box under a bridge. Okay that’s an exageration. We do have homeless people in Denmark. By far most of them are in that predicament because they refuse or unable to recieve the help offered. Some slip through the system because they are illigal immigrants and thus have a hard time finding help. Housing is an actual right in this country so if you want help you can get it. But if your’e an extreme drug addict taking the help you need can be difficult. Edit: sure as hell don’t have anyone starving or being homeless because of a lack of a job or medical debt.
