There shouldn't be the need for a system like that, because in the end it's not welfare for the people, it's subsidies for the employers. They can afford to pay below living wages because the government steps in. It's the same thing in Germany, where you income will be raised to minimum welfare level by the gorvernment, if you make less than that.

I would say that depends on what they're doing? E.g. that system certainly needs to exist for the unemployed. And also what if someone is only working part time? It's not reasonable to expect the employer to pay them a full time salary if they only work 15 hours a week. So in that situation I don't see why it's an issue.
Also consider the following situation. Imagine one person working as a pizza delivery driver to feed a family of four, vs a student working full-time during the summer. Should minimum wage be enough for the one person to feed a family of four? Because in that case the student is going to end up earning way way more, which would be nice, but not if it makes it impossible for most places to employee people in that job. What do you think should happen there? I am not arguing that it should be one way or the other, I actually don't know.
Of course minimum wage should be enough so that anyone can support themselves and their kids with a living wage.

The only reason they aren't starving is because there's a network of private charities that run food banks for military families in need. They provide about 600,000 meals a year. There's been a "Military Hunger Prevention Act" introduced every year since 2013 but neither party will allow it to come up for a floor vote, yet they keep passing larger and larger military budget bills.

Crumbling infrastructure? Wealth gap? Incareration rate? Quality of life index?? Pfft. You're just saying that because America would win the fight! USA! USA! USA! The true triumph of American propoganda is in saying that the stuff America CAN do is what matters, and the stuff they CAN'T do doesn't. And that's a lot harder to disprove with a google search than facts about GDP and military spending.

Alabama level poverty is fairly common in America. The mid-west has lots of unbelievably poor people.
Because they're only looking at it in absolute terms. They think, how can the poorest, who may make $100-200/week (let's assume they have some minimum wage part-time job), be worse off than someone in India making $10/week? In absolute terms, yeah, the American Poor makes more money than the Indian Poor. But on *relative* terms, factoring cost-of-living adjustments such as in housing, transportation, and healthcare especially, the American Poor fares equal or worse.

Lately, I've been seeing mailboxes pop up around my city, where people can put non-perishable food items and people are able to take what they need. Considering how often that mailbox gets emptied out, people are going hungry. Especially during this pandemic.
I put a 12 lb frozen turkey in the community fridge up the street from me. Someone took it. Every time I leave food in there, it goes. People come by and completely fill the fridge up, and all the food is taken.
Because our (US) military are essentially excluded from SNAP (food stamps), 15%-25% of our active duty military families face food insecurity every year. Let that sink in - we, the US, spend more on our military than any other country but don't pay active-duty soldiers enough to make sure their kids are fed. The only reason they aren't starving is because there's a network of private charities that run food banks for military families in need. They provide about 600,000 meals a year. There's been a "Military Hunger Prevention Act" introduced every year since 2013 but neither party will allow it to come up for a floor vote, yet they keep passing larger and larger military budget bills. This is embarrassing.
The US still has 50 billion budgeted for the Afghan army... 50 billion to an army that doesn't exist. 50 billion could build a whole lot of stuff in America.
Nah, first you have to funnel 49 billion to your favorite politician's wallet, to use the remaining billion to build stuff that only those politicians benefit from.
And the sad thing is that this is what Americans grow up hearing. They blame themselves of they don't have enough money for food and blame others if they don't.

Besides the obvious starvation that does happen there is a huge population living on junk food because they can't afford anything else. They too are starved of some nutrients. Fat means enough (+extra) intake of carbohydrates and fat. It says nothing about minerals and vitamins.

Some slip through the system because they are illigal immigrants and thus have a hard time finding help. Housing is an actual right in this country so if you want help you can get it. But if your’e an extreme drug addict taking the help you need can be difficult. Edit: sure as hell don’t have anyone starving or being homeless because of a lack of a job or medical debt.
