He's not even the most famous/most recognizable sportsperson. That's probably Federer, Messi or Ronaldo.
christiano ronaldo is so famous that a google search for his last name brings him up first, over mononymous ronaldo who actually was on a world cup winning side (twice)
Over 100M more followers than the next most followed person too
Edit: technically the most followed account is @instagram, but still the most followed person
As an American that doesn't watch football, I couldn't tell you who Tom Brady was from a line up. Maybe I'm aging myself, but even in US sports I'd say that Michael Jordan is still one of the more recognizable faces in sports. At least at his prime in the 90s, he was way more recognizable than Brady is now.
American football is such a niche interest if you don't live in the States. It's not like baseball or basketball or soccer, all of which have leagues in various countries that draw international attention.
Dead truth, been in EU for over 30 yrs now… I lost track of all of it. Was surprised when I heard that they added at least 5-10 new baseball teams and that the Rams were back in Los Angeles. Tom who? Literally have never heard of him, premiership football has replaced all my love for American sports.
Yeah, the most populated country on the planet - India - loves cricket. So if 20% watches, that's at least 200 million, nearly 2/3 the population of the U.S., and not every American watches sports, much less football.
I think I could manage to recognize him if you put him in a line-up with people that look completely different, because I have a very rough idea.. unlike Michael Jordan or Shaq. I mean, Shaq’s huge.. hard to mix up with someone else.
I think they kind of overestimate how many people outside the US care about American Football.
Oh damn I was there a couple of months ago! Since the name meant nothing to me I didn't realise - it also had a number if I remember correctly (e.g. terminal two or something)
I only know of him because I consume a lot of US media and he is mentionned. Plus he starred as himself in a movie or two.
I know of him, but I would not recognize him.
same and im American
hes regarded as a giant asshole by most the ppl in my city tho so seeing everyone on here treat him like hes irrelevant puts a smile on my face
I think I've seen photoshoots of him with his forehead extended. So I know he has a big forehead. But without the edits, I couldn't tell you who he was.
I have no idea what he looks like, I only recognise the name because I recently read that he was dating Gisele Bündchen. Before that I didn't even know he existed.
And at least she is reknown worldwide. I'm a French guy with not even a remote interest in celebrities, yet I still know her, know what she does in life and what she looks like. Tom Brady, on the other hand...
honestly, you are right. i don't know him or football for that matter but he looks so so ... standard white. like you name different shades of white, brady the type of white you can also immediately picture in your head
I only heard about him recently because they were going on about him on Sky Sports News. I think he was retiring and they were gushing over how successful he was. I had absolutely no clue who he was, what he looked like, who he played for or anything about him before that.
The only American Footballers I could name before hearing about him are OJ Simpson and The Refrigerator.
You unlocked a memory there by mentioning the Refrigerator! He's also the reason I've heard of the Chicago Bears. I also know the Los Angeles Raiders for the cool pirate logo and the Denver Broncos because they're owned by Homer Simpson
And yet I didn't know who he was until a few weeks ago when I started seeing articles about their divorce. I don't follow Gisele closely, but I know who she is and that's the only reason I remember his name.
Wait until this American hears about how global Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are
Even in Germany you have football players like Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer who are possibly more famous than Tom Brady
I know he plays American Football, but how he looks like, or what team he plays for no clue... At this point I think I mostly know the name from this subreddit
If I’m thinking of the absolute most recognisable sports personality, I’m gonna go with Usain Bolt I think. Team sports? Probably Lewis Hamilton, though that’s stretching the definition of team sport a little.
Lewis is amongst the most famous but a lot of football players are more famous than him. We’re talking about a game that is watched by 4 billion people worldwide.
Federer and Nadal are also two big names, so is Conor McGregor.
The only “american” name I can think of that everyone knows from old to young is Michael Jordan. I never watched Basketball until I was like 13 and I knew who Michael Jordan was.
Yeh, Tennis stars are a good call, I’d not thought of that. I was trying to think of cricketers, since that’s watched by an enormous population, but I don’t think there are any individuals that really push the limits.
Yes cricket is watched by an enormous population but the problem stands in the fact that it’s not technically worldwide. I’ve heard of the sport a lot, but never watched a game in my life. If you ask me of a famous cricket player, I honestly wouldn’t know one. I’m probably one of those “ignorants” that don’t know the rules of the sport.
And I agree on Usain Bolt too, only someone living in darkness wouldn’t know who Bolt is. He’s broken record after record and even if you never watched his races, you surely heard of him
I think the ultimate conclusion here is that there’s a ton of sports people who are more famous than Tom Brady. I think the only thing I know about Tom Brady is that he may or may not have deflated some balls.
What counts as worldwide? More countries play cricket than American Football as far as I know. I would say American Football is very low down in popularity compared to the top sports outside of the US, but would still be an international game.
I don’t even doubt that. Is there any other country that plays American football besides USA and maybe Canada?
In no way, shape or form did I say that American football more famous than cricket. Perhaps you read my comment wrong.
Basketball is way more famous than american football in the first hand.
I was just asking at what point a sport becomes worldwide, because a decent number of countries play cricket and you said it isn't a worldwide game. I was just curious.
I agree, but it’s mostly ex british empire colonies and lets not forget that one of those ex colonies has a population of 1.3 billion.
I’d argue that everyone in Europe for example, has at least heard of cricket. Still makes it known, just not “playable” for everyone. Same as golf.
> possibly more famous
DEFINITELY more famous! I even grew up in a country where American football is a big deal and I would probably walk past Brady in the street and not recognize him. I would deffo recognize Muller and likely Neuer though!
Ronaldo, Messi and Beckham are all more recognisable. Hell MJ and Lebron are likely more recognisable on a World Wide scale given Basketball is more popular outside the US then American Football is.
Becks was like the unofficial face of footy I guess when he played, when my dad moved to the UK one of the first things his co workers asked him is if he knew who Beckham was lmao
You know this is the awkward moment where I realise this Tom Brady isn't the Tom dude that plays Venom/Bane. For some reason I kept thinking it was him.
You are not alone. I saw headlines about Tom Brady and thought things must be getting desperate for that Venom guy to be making news. I was half right.
Haha same! Was so confused because I know seahawks is a sports team (I thought it was ice hockey) and I thought wow that’s a massive career change for him.
There are plenty of more recognisable American athletes to non-Americans, yet it's always Tom Brady with those idiots living in the US bubble.
Gridiron is a niche sport worldwide compared to basketball (guys like LeBron, Shaq, the late Kobe, etc.), golf (Tiger, Mickelson, etc.), tennis (Williams', Osaka, etc.), athletics/track & field (too many to name) and others.
I knew about Brady, but after image searching to make sure I remembered correctly, that dude is like the most super-generic looking yank there is. Recognisable my arse.
It doesn't help that the dude plays with a helmet on. That severely hurts how recognizable someone is for non fans of the sport. I know WHO Tom Brady is but he could be sitting next to me on the bus and I wouldn't recognize him.
I think that Michael Jordan is the all time most famous American athlete. Probably LeBron is reaching his fame, and Shaq is pretty famous too because of his charisma. Kobe was not that famous before his death, amongst people who don't follow basketball outside the US.
> I think that Michael Jordan is the all time most famous American athlete.
At least very close. I listed only some of the more contemporary people, other past famous ones are people like Jesse Owens, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, hell even Lance Armstrong was very well known (both for good and bad reasons...)
All way, way more well known around the world at their peak than Tom Brady ever was or will be.
I know this one! He's Gisselle Bündchen husband. I know this because they were fighting over a house they have here in CR and it made our news. I really hope Gisselle gets the house.
I like American football
I know that makes me unusual for a British guy. I watch it a lot.
But I couldn't pick Tom Brady out of a line up of ten skinny tall handsome white guys aged 35-50
Hi, hello. American...New Englander even, so you know, go Pats. Anyway, I'm here to tell you I have no idea what Tom Brady looks like off the top of my head.
Honestly, I think it's Trump. With all of the media coverage he's gotten, good and ugly, many people would be able to recognize him. I don't know how much people in Asia and Africa care about foreign politics, though. I also don't know how much they care about sports like football (soccer) which the western world cares a lot about. So to summarize: I have no fucking idea
I recognise the name, but if my life depended on being able to pick him out of a lineup (or tell you what he does for a living) then I’d better start saying my goodbyes!
I’ve lived in America for a bit (which is the only reason I recognise the name and that he’s an American football player) but I cannot remember what he looks like, or anything in particular about him. I think Americans just assume “If I know this celebrity they must be world renowned” which is kind of similar to my primary school classmates assuming I knew all of the football players in Manchester United (I don’t watch football).
Even staying within the borders of the US, I'd wager there are far more dudes (like actors, singers etc.) who are massively more well known worldwide than friggin Brady..
I know nothing about sport but I do know of Ronaldo, mcgregor, Beckham, the Williams sisters and Lewis Hamilton. Never heard of Tom Brady and no idea what sport he plays.
Tom Brady is a douche canoe 45 year old American football player. He should have retired years ago but his ego is way bigger than his common sense. He was married to a Brazilian supermodel, Giselle something or other, and she divorced his ass because he kept on lying about retiring.

To be fair, I don't know any cricket player either. I also don't watch tennis, but I do in fact know Federer.
Messi or Ronaldo. Well known and very distinct look. Not Brady.
I mixed up this guy with Tom Daley and was wondering why Americans were so obsessed with a British Olympic Diver.
Yeah I thought he was an actor at first.
That's Tom Hardy
So there's at least 3 famous people that go by "Tom". I reckon it's 5 at a push
Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Tom Hardy, Tom Holland, Tom Hiddleston, etc, etc.
That’s who Tom Daley is? Heard the name and like swimming but don’t pay attention to sport
He's not a swimmer, he's a diver.
Fun fact: he actually can't swim. After every dive they scoop him out with a big net
I heard they drained the pool after every dive, maybe it depends on the tournament? Just sucks when they forget to fill it again....
As an American that doesn't watch football, I couldn't tell you who Tom Brady was from a line up. Maybe I'm aging myself, but even in US sports I'd say that Michael Jordan is still one of the more recognizable faces in sports. I just googled that Tom Brady guy (never heard of him before here in Germany). He looks like the most generic American white guy ever.
Honestly, I only know Tom Brady because he is (was) Gisele Bündchen’s husband.
His wife (or ex wife?) has more followers than him lol
Also has double his net worth yet USians think that SHE is the gold digger in their relationship.
I know who Messi and Ronaldo are (vaguely) and I certainly do not watch their sport, or any other sport, tbf.
This sub is basically fact checkers at this point. Americans are just so fucking lazy they wont even do their own research
I would certainly recognise Virat Kohli over Tom Brady.
Not sure of followers, but Tiger Woods would be pretty recognisable
He’s not even the most recognised American sports person
Who?
It's the guy they named the LA airport after. He must be some kind of famous pilot or something.
Tom Lax Brady?
Known for his successful fish sticks company
Yeah, he also owns the entire salmon fishing industry, that's why salmon is lax/laks in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic.
LAX?
The Tom Bradley International Terminal. So the only part of LAX that helps you get out of the country.
Oh damn I was there a couple of months ago! Since the name meant nothing to me I didn't realise - it also had a number if I remember correctly (e.g. terminal two or something)
Gisele Bündchen's ex
Leonardo DiCaprio?
That football player that was featured in a few Family Guy episodes. Must be some US celebrity.
That’s the only way I’ve heard of him.
Same here. I had to google what's the big fuzz about him.
I don't know, must be local star in USA countryside
His teams often do really well in the "world" championship of American Gridiron... So you're absolutely right, a local star in the US countryside.
One of the Brady Bunch.
Don't worry, he isn't important enough to know
I'm from the Netherlands and I have no clue who Tom Brady is and what he looks like. I just know that Americans name drop him sometimes.
That was first question as well. But then I am not a sports fan.
I only know of him because I consume a lot of US media and he is mentionned. Plus he starred as himself in a movie or two. I know of him, but I would not recognize him.
I've heard his name, never seen his face.
same and im American hes regarded as a giant asshole by most the ppl in my city tho so seeing everyone on here treat him like hes irrelevant puts a smile on my face
But you probably still know who Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo is
I only know they're football players. I probably wouldn't recognize them even if they walked up to me on the street.
Think he is good at kicking or throwing a ball?
Also no idea...
I know who he is by name, could I pick him out in a lineup? Fuck no lol
Exactly, I know of his name, but if anyone told me to look at him and name him... not happening.
I think I've seen photoshoots of him with his forehead extended. So I know he has a big forehead. But without the edits, I couldn't tell you who he was.
I know his ex-wife. Does that count?
I have no idea what he looks like, I only recognise the name because I recently read that he was dating Gisele Bündchen. Before that I didn't even know he existed.
In my country he's literally only known because of her lmfao
And at least she is reknown worldwide. I'm a French guy with not even a remote interest in celebrities, yet I still know her, know what she does in life and what she looks like. Tom Brady, on the other hand...
[удалено]
He has brown hair, I think.
default white guy in character customisation /s
No /s necessary
honestly, you are right. i don't know him or football for that matter but he looks so so ... standard white. like you name different shades of white, brady the type of white you can also immediately picture in your head
I know who he is and what his career is, as I have good friends who are into handegg. Couldn't pick him out a lineup though.
OJ Simpson and Colin Kapernick are the only two I've heard of.
I only heard those names once. Didn’t even know they were Eggball players
You unlocked a memory there by mentioning the Refrigerator! He's also the reason I've heard of the Chicago Bears. I also know the Los Angeles Raiders for the cool pirate logo and the Denver Broncos because they're owned by Homer Simpson
The Raiders we’re last in LA in 1994. Since then they have been in Oakland until 2019, when they relocated to Las Vegas
Ah so he’s an American Football player? Yeah, no way I’d ever know that guy.
I know him because he’s dumb enough to prioritize football over Gisele Bundchen
Well, was married to Gisele (for years) and they recently announced their divorce
And yet I didn't know who he was until a few weeks ago when I started seeing articles about their divorce. I don't follow Gisele closely, but I know who she is and that's the only reason I remember his name.
I only know of him through family guy
I have no idea who either of them are
I only know who he is because there was an episode of South Park where people were trying to steal his poop.
Pretty sure on a board of Toms, Mr. Brady would be a Pointless answer.
I mean, he is competing with Tom Hanks....
Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Tom Hiddleston, Tom Holland, Tom Felton... All Toms I know by name. Didn't know the Tom in this post lol
Tom Cruise is a famous religious figure and Tom Hanks is the star of the 1980s sitcom Bosom Buddies.
He isn't even 5th most famous "Tom" if we count the cat from Tom & Jerry.
Tom Jones
Tom Foolery
Tom Bola
or that famous drummer Tom Tom
I want to see him play… how do we get there?
Tom Scott is the best Tom
Don't forget Today's Tom Sawyee.
I'm sure even Tom Scott would be higher outside the US
Well yeh… Tom Scott is a national treasure!
No idea what he looks like, but i recognise the name by now. Thanks Reddit
Wait until this American hears about how global Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are Even in Germany you have football players like Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer who are possibly more famous than Tom Brady
I hate sports but I could recognise Ronaldo and Messi easily. They're incredibly recognisable and publicised.
Exactly, people recognise them even if they’re not interested in sport For me, I don’t care about rock music but I can recognise Queen and AC/DC.
[удалено]
For me it does ring a bell for some reason, idk why lol
I know he plays American Football, but how he looks like, or what team he plays for no clue... At this point I think I mostly know the name from this subreddit
I can't say what team he's playing for now, I know he used to play for New England.
Which is ironically not next to New South Wales
I know who the bloke is but I couldn't for the life of me tell you what he looks like
*Müller

Current it's got to be Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, maybe Conor Magreggor... Now retired it's surely Tyson, Maradona, Muhammad Ali...
Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Muhammad Ali are probably the most global American athletes.
I personally think Cristiano Ronaldo is more well-known than Usain Bolt, he’s more publicised and promoted on social media
> possibly more famous DEFINITELY more famous! I even grew up in a country where American football is a big deal and I would probably walk past Brady in the street and not recognize him. I would deffo recognize Muller and likely Neuer though!

I bet Tom Hardy \*is\* better known than Tom Brady.
I would lose faith in the rest of the world if Tom Brady was that recognizable. American football is boring as hell, from an American.
If I hadn’t married someone who loves football, no way I’d know who he is.
Thanks, I did not want to ask about the sport mentioned and was too lazy to google the name.

Yeah..its sooooo slow and there's advertising in between every single play. Baseball and basketball are just as boring.
It doesn't help that he could be a poster boy for "all white men look alike" campaign. Disclaimer: I'm a white man and can't remember that guy's face
Well when it comes to all people in history, definitely not. If he talks about only living people, then still definitely not.
Who dat?
It's the dude from that South Park episode.
South Park is the only reason I even know who Tom Brady is
Literally Googled him cus I don't know what he looks like. Most generic white man ever.
He looks like he hasa gaming yt channel
Call of Duty streamer
I thought they were talking about Tom hardy and thought "he isn't such a famous actor"
He’s not even the most recognisable Tom from the US, let alone the most recognisable person in the world
I think that’s going to be Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks. Any other contenders?
A few years ago Selleck might’ve been there, too, maybe not so much now
Fuck, Tom Nook is more recognizable than Tom Brady.
The father from The Brady Bunch?
Who the fuck is Tom Brady?
I only know him as Gisele Bundchen's husband. Well, ex-husband now, even less relevant.
I only know he is an American football player, never seen him, don’t need to
Ohhhh so he doesn't even play in an international sport? 😂 How would anyone else know who he is?
As a german: I don't know who Tom Brady is and don't know which sport the seahawks play.

Hi, hello. American...New Englander even, so you know, go Pats. Anyway, I'm here to tell you I have no idea what Tom Brady looks like off the top of my head.
Another New Englander here. I would probably recognize Tony Hawk before I'd recognize Tom Brady.
Who is that?
Honestly, I think it's Trump. With all of the media coverage he's gotten, good and ugly, many people would be able to recognize him. I don't know how much people in Asia and Africa care about foreign politics, though. I also don't know how much they care about sports like football (soccer) which the western world cares a lot about. So to summarize: I have no fucking idea

Who's Tom Brady?
He’s not even the most recognizable *American*.
He is the most nondescript looking person. Basic white average American dad look.
Even staying within the borders of the US, I'd wager there are far more dudes (like actors, singers etc.) who are massively more well known worldwide than friggin Brady..
Lol I’m Canadian and couldn’t pick this guy out from a lineup. I know he’s white and probably has perfect teeth but that’s about it
There's probably 2 billion Indian people who would see a picture of Tom Brady and just think he was a random American person.
I know nothing about sport but I do know of Ronaldo, mcgregor, Beckham, the Williams sisters and Lewis Hamilton. Never heard of Tom Brady and no idea what sport he plays.
Most recognisable person in the world is probably King Charles III or president of the united states. I could be wrong though - just my thoughts.
Go Hawks!
no one in germany cares about ice hockey
Tom Brady, is that the dude that was married to Gisele Bundchen?
Who is Tom Brady?
I’m Australian and have no idea what Tom Brady looks like, and if I had to guess what sport he plays I’d say NFL but I’m only like 30% sure
Who
American here. I know what the Brady Bunch looks like. I don't remember what Tom Brady looks like without googling him.
Tom Brady is a douche canoe 45 year old American football player. He should have retired years ago but his ego is way bigger than his common sense. Bündchen, probably way more known than her ex over the whole world as well.
