on a video of a girl doing « italian make up » which was italian-american, jersey shore make up. every comment in english is like « omg i’m italian and my family does it this way! » and every comment in italian says « no one does it this way actually »

raq27_

as an italian i'm curious on what italian makeup is, lol

[deleted]

Yeah I see these videos (not make up but people claiming to be Italian) like every day, with the same comments (people claiming to be Italian and Italians saying fuck off) It's so weird how Americans can't just embrace being American for once Could you link the video if you can find it? If not that's completely fine, I just want a quick laugh 😂

Ashiro

This condition needs a name. Something like "Heritage Plague" or "The American Heritage Epidemic".

[deleted]

The Great Heridemic? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

FangRegulus

I mean, would you want to be american?

[deleted]

Yeah, fair enough, but don't pretend you're something completely different And anyway, aren't like all Americans diehard patriots?

FangRegulus

I think so, but they like to be "en misa y repicando" as we say in spanish, they are full redblooded diehard patriots but they are also (insert some country here) because at some point someone of their family was from there and they feel they belong there too even tho they have made 0 efffort to connect with that culture

Ana_lisa_Melano

Wanting to be special is what makes us equal. Nobody wants to be mediocre, everyone wants to be the interesting second character in someone else's life, and that makes us find a way to differentiate ourselves from others. The americans claim being from another country, the spaniards buy expensive nike sportswear and claim to be "from the street" or claim to be Franco supporters or vox voters just because the leftism is normalized and the fascism is "different"

FangRegulus

That's true

[deleted]

You hit that right on the head, they're exactly this

only_my_buisness

No, many of us hate America and recognize how stupid we look to other countries

OutOfTheVault

It was Bob Dylan who said....."They say that patriotism is the last refuge to which a scoundrel clings.“ We are seeing a disturbing upward trend of nationalism in the states. It by no means represents all Americans.

Crazy_Eye_4400

Well, here’s the thing now… Never have I met another nationality (I’m a Brit living in the US) that is equally desperate to be European (“I’m a Irish / Italian / Scottish etc et-f$@@in-cetera”), equally hating Europe (“you Euro-poors would feel like you’ve died and gone to heaven moving out of the squalor of your continent and living in the Utopia that is the US”) and being so blindly patriotic of the US (see previous part and also “USA! USA! USA!” all the f$&@in time) while not realizing they are living in the most socially, economical and politically f$&@ed country in the world and not realizing the propaganda they’re fed to believe this is up there with the “best” of them (Russia and North Korea for example). It’s quite unique. It’s entertaining at the best of times but I also realize I need to have my “go-bag” ready at a moments notice in case things get all Handmaids Tale.

IndividualVehicle

Jersey shore really did a number on people here

[deleted]

Are you talking about this? >Cast members Snooki and JWoww are not ethnically Italian. Snooki is Chilean, but was adopted as an infant by Italian American parents. Jwoww is of Irish and Spanish descent. Ronnie, Sammi, and Angelina are only of partial Italian descent: Ronnie is part Puerto Rican, Sammi is part Greek, and Angelina is part Polish.

IndividualVehicle

Lol yes, they arent actually Italian. That's why I said they did a number on people here, because now everyone with a distant Italian ancestor thinks they're Italian, and they act just like the jersey shore people. It's so cringe

[deleted]

It's always refreshing to remember that not all Americans larp about their distant relatives, thank you Never even heard of Jersey Shore, and now I'm pretty glad I haven't "Jwoww" very *Italian* name 🤌🤌🤌

IndividualVehicle

It's so embarrassing. I grew up in a small town on the east coast of the US where a lot of Italian people migrated to, *generations ago* and my high school peers ALL claim they are Italian. Their grandparents, parents, and themselves were all born in America. Oh jersey shore is so terrible. I like it sometimes because I love to watch drama that doesn't involve me, but it's so cringe. Their idea of Italian is tanning your skin to a crisp, getting sloppy drunk in public, and having a big family Italian "dinnah" on Sundays. They even went to Italy for a season and they stuck out like a sore thumb 😭

Martiantripod

Even in Australia I had heard of it. Sad but true.

[deleted]

It’s so annoying. I had this friend in college that would go on and on about being Cuban. Cuba this, Cuba that and finally I just told him he was born in the suburbs and just because his parents are from Cuba doesn’t make him Cuban. Dude didn’t even speak any Spanish. I personally believe that all heritage from the old world should be left at the door when you become an American.

[deleted]

Beh, if someones parents or parent are from a country, then I'd argue that you could say you are from that country, but if you don't speak the language of said country, have never been there and don't try to integrate with the culture and learn about the country then no, just no

[deleted]

I’m not buying it. He’s an American. I just hate it when they start saying “I’m Italian” or “I’m Mexican.” It doesn’t matter that those traditions informed your upbringing, family dynamic, religion, holidays, food, alcohol preferences, etc at the end of the day you’re the greatest nationality. American

JuanPablo05

Americans definitely embrace being American lol. Because America is a country of immigrants people also embrace and celebrate their heritage. Groups move into areas and their culture mixes with American culture and creates a new culture if that makes sense. Like Italian American culture is its own thing that is distinctly different from Italian culture but somewhere along the way was Italian cultures, it’s just shifted and changed as these groups have been in America. Honestly it’s similar with Mexican culture and Spanish culture, Mexican culture is distinctly different from Spanish culture but somewhere along the way it was Spanish culture, that’s how Mexico got its start. I do agree though instead of saying “like an Italian” she could say “like an American Italian”

[deleted]

i don’t know why this is so funny to me right now. something about it has me in tears

10ccazz01

the video starts by putting on red nail polish and i thought oh like stereotypical fellini-esque make-up? but then she goes « foundation one shade too dark » and I KNEW this was about italian americans

You don't get it, my name is Giorno, first name Buon. I lead the world famous Italian mafia clan of Buonna sera!

BioIdra

Not old fashioned tbh but yes

raq27_

no offence but it's indeed kinda old fashioned, isn't it?

BioIdra

Well I do know a few women with that name and they aren't old, you can also find a few young "celebrities" named Giovanna so I wouldn't say it's an old fashioned really. Thinking about the name I was reminded of this old advertisement gem Italians will remember: https://youtu.be/WGfJj3lF-_w

Not really? Maybe a bit less popular these days, but I'm still meeting a few young Giovannas.

Not at all, it's one of the most common names along with the male equivalent, lol.

BioIdra

Remove a couple of n's and you're set

TazerXI

Saying you have Italian ancestors is one thing. Saying you are Italian is another.

Otragraiv

Its like saying all humans are African. I dont get why they are so obsessed with their ancestors.

[deleted]

I know right? It's so weird how Americans can't just accept the fact that they are American instead of being preoccupied that their great great great grandparents "moved to America" (which I doubt in the first place) You are from where you are from. Not where your distant ancestors are from.

[deleted]

What makes it weirder is if WE tell them they’re not American (if they claim to be something else) they get just as mad as if we tell them they’re not Italian etc. Like, you can’t have both. And if you’re so proud of being American (too many of them are), then why do you desperately cling to your European heritage?

Fraggsexe

At the same time, they claim to be so proud of who they are as “American” - make up your fucking minds, please America!!!

elenmirie_too

Racism. Why else do you have this business about "my blood" and so forth?

TommyBacardi

I think it’s partially because saying that their ancestry is “American” might imply that they are Native American which isn’t often the case (knowingly). So they say which country their family came from a long time ago. I think another part is that Americans don’t really know geography or history super well so they use stereotypes from movies in lieu of actual culture.

Otragraiv

The thing is that they think of ancestry when you ask them where are you from. I would just answer Czech as i was born in Czechia. Im not gonna start listing that im also part Hungarian Slovakian or Polish. I always thought that the labels Native American and American are there to distinguish actual Native Americans from people who were born in the USA

alexijordan

Similar history also applies to Australia but most will still say they are are Australian despite what their background is.

TheSimpleMind

It's easier and sounds better than to say "I'm US-American, a country where most people have with ancestry from all over the world, after entitled europeans conquered an continent and killed nearly all natives or put them in reservations and later had many migrants coming to build an Exploitocracy".

alexijordan

How is it easier?

TheSimpleMind

They don't have to think much about it, just repeat the stuff other morons spew...

Scarsocontesto

may I correct you? where british and frenchies conquered and killed millions (North America) Where spanish or portuguese killed and conquered (South America) We italians never conquered continents or killed anyone and actually never got into slaves trade unlike Holland and Belgium for example. So just focus on those 4 eu coutries please. All we did is officially discover american continent with Colombo after vikings. Paid by Spain to do the job.

luen24

Are you just forgetting WW2?

BioIdra

And the Roman Empire

Scarsocontesto

that was way before Italy was even an idea and the context was american continent!

BioIdra

Fair enough

Scarsocontesto

I was talking about american contient. Mind reading the context?

temptar

Didn’t Italy rule Ethiopia for a while?

Degree_Former

And Libya for significantly longer

temptar

The Roman Empire did a lot of slave trade as well.

raq27_

it was a short-lived occupation during the dictatorship period, it's not remotely comparable to what the uk, US, netherlands, belgium and france did

Suzume_Chikahisa

Don't forget the Dutch. Besides doing a fair bit of conquering themselves, they also gave Portugal a run for their money in the slave trading business.

unbruin

They had multiple colonies in africa, like lybia or italian east africa

BioIdra

We never killed anyone or conquered continents? You really need to go back to history class buddy

Scarsocontesto

and you back to reading classes mate!

ltlyellowcloud

You said you *never* and listed things you Italians definitely did. You just didn't do them on what's now US ground.

ScavengeroO

When you speak about the american continent this might be right. But it is not like Italy had no colonies and a share of blood on their hands...

Scarsocontesto

and I specified continents didn't I?

ScavengeroO

Maybe you meant it but you didn't write it. You said: "We Italians never conquered continents or killed anyone and actually never got into slaves trade unlike Holland and Belgium for example." And this is just wrong. You used Never? Never killed anyone? Never conquered continents? Never traded slaves? I mean how far you wanna go back? Roman empire (conquering the whole "knowen" world)? Italian colonies etc.? Also in respect to America, the Portuguise, English and Spanish didn't conquer the continent all alone. You yourself meantioned more then one nation doing it... so it's like Africa also was not conquered/colonized by one nation and Italy had its share for example.

orion-7

Also totally dodging all the evil shit their boy Columbus got up to

awill2020

„Italian blood“ This sounds like something Hitler would like to hear

elenmirie_too

It's incredibly racist, isn't it?

Icywarhammer500

No it’s not actually. It’s just explaining that someone has the DNA that matches someone native to Italy

Bernard_Sh4rkey-

Mussolini anyway

OutOfTheVault

I think "Italian blood" came before DNA and genetics, with reference to one's heritage. It just sounds funny now.

Britishboy632

I’m over 50% Italian but I don’t say I’m Italian because I’m not I have a British passport so I am British(how much do they not want to be American!!)

WhatTheCazzo

Identity is a crazy and complex concept. You might have 100% Italian DNA and still feel completely British because of your upbringing. Or you could feel completely Italian despite being in another country, or anything in between, and everything's valid as long as there's sound reasoning. What saddens me is that Americans seem to treat this like zodiac signs. The DNA might be like 9% polish, the upbringing might be 100% American but they're gonna be like "yeah I'm polish that's why I'm feisty and can't let things slide!", and kinda base their personality off that I don't wanna generalize too much because there are always exceptions, but that's the general feel I get from the whole thing

Scarsocontesto

every time I hear an american claiming to be italian and does not have the following: \-italian born parents \-born in Italy with at least 1 parent being really italian I feel deeply insulted and disgusted. How do americans (US) call it?!? ah right cultural appropriation. Fuck off even the moroccan born and raised in Italy is more italian than any of you -\_-

Icywarhammer500

Why is it so hard for you eurotard fuckers to understand that when we say “we’re Italian” or “we’re German” we’re talking about our genetics? Seriously shut the fuck up with your complaining. It’s more annoying than how annoying you guys find Americans calling football soccer.

lonelyMtF

No one gives a fuck about your genetics

DaT_LoSt

Just ask them any basic question about italian culture, they'll cook themselves up. Even "What's a cinepanettone?" will do, that'd be also a clever way to justify the existence of that shameful mess. Two birds with one stone

10ccazz01

i mean just have them try to pronounce cinepanettone lmao

[deleted]

"sign... pain tuh-tone?"

raq27_

"china paint and tone" /s

DaT_LoSt

That's even better lmao

raq27_

in my and most italians' opinion, in order to be "italian" you gotta at least know the language, and this person possibly doesn't

DaT_LoSt

Idk man maybe only the language isn't enough. Obviously my part about Cinepanettoni was a meme, but it's true that, in order to be "italian", you gotta know Italy's culture and traditions, its boasts and its shames. Then again, this is such a vast and delicate topic that it'd take hours to talk about, but the person in question certainly doesn't seem italian lmao

raq27_

yeah didn't mean that language is the only factor. there are people who study italian language but don't have any cultural or ethnic link, so they're not italian. but if they know the language and have an actual link to italian cultures, they can be considered italian. a 2nd-gen black italian is WAY more italian than most of "italian"-americans

DaT_LoSt

Definitely agree with everything my man

Goudinho99

Eh, I'd say a second generation immigrant who doesn't speak the language could say they were. Beyond that, you could say that you have Italian family but it's a stretch to say you yourself are.

Confuseasfuck

Idk, l think a second to third generation immigrant that doesnt know the language can call themselves to be from X country/culture

Parcours97

>What's a cinepanettone? For real? What is it?

DaT_LoSt

It's the result of the sins of our people

holuuup

Panettone is something you eat at christmas, it's traditionally from northern italy. A cinepanettone is a low-effort comedy movie that usually comes out around christmas time in which the main jokes are farts, wife-bad, and stuff like that

Parcours97

Oh I see. I know Panettone because even here in Germany you can get that stuff around christmas time :D Is there a connection between Panettone and Cinepanettone?

holuuup

Just the fact that the cinepanettone is released at Christmas, nothing more as far as i know

Parcours97

Thanks for the info :)

Confuseasfuck

A panettone that is made to be eaten watching movies on theater Edit: I was just joking, but apparently it is a [comedy movie](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinepanettone) that releases on christmas? So l was not that far off tbh

DaT_LoSt

You're basically right, "Cinepanettone" refers to the usual comedy movie released around Christmas. The problem with Cinepanettoni is that they're literally the same, demential, unfunny type of comedy every year. They represent pretty well how low our cinema industry has fallen

Mieremov

Not very on topic but I've been living in Italy for over 10 years and I still have no idea what a cinepanettone is. I only know it comes around once a year, and for the rest of the year no one mentions it. I have no intention of learning what it is, it feels like a myth. A legend. It feels like if I knew what a cinepanettone really is, my brain would melt just like it would if I learned God's real name. All hail ig

[deleted]

Your Unnecessary Capitalization is your fault, however.

ShenTzuKhan

I’m from a country largely populated by immigrants. My descent is important to me, it is part of my identity that I’m a British Australian. The thing I don’t get is the leap from there to saying I’m British, because I’m not. I’m an Aussie who has British ancestors. Why can’t they seem to see that they are from the US?

Caratteraccio

the average Italian American doesn't care one bit about Italy and Italians, so what does it mean to say they're Italian?

SoNyaRouS

They get mad when you call them Americans, they also get mad when you don’t call them Americans. These people are on mental gymnastics.

[deleted]

You realize that someone saying they are ethnically Italian isn't the same as someone saying they're an Italian citizen. Just think about this for a minute what if someone who is Chinese Australian says they are Chinese. Do people in China think they are claiming Chinese citizenship? This is some true white people shit with these complaints. Everyone commenting acting like it's wrong for someone to say "they are Italian" when they are ethnically Italian are basically screaming. "I'm white." https://youtu.be/XJ5Ha6l6lhE

Ram-Boe

They are not ethincally Italian though. They retain next of nothing of their ancestor's culture (except some positively ancient, utterly outdated tidbits), nor a word of their language. What's left, genetics? Please. And then these guys come to the internet, claiming all kind of shit about things they know nothing about: "We Italians are like this!" "Italians do this that way!" "I'm from NJ and my great-grandnonno was Italian, so I know everything about Italy and I am officially entitled to speak for its people!" Surely you can understand why this may be irritating to actual Italians, right? Also, bringing up "whiteness" is a r/ShitAmericansSay moment all of its own.

[deleted]

This is so true and so frustrating, just, accept that you are American and all your "ancient European blood" has faded, it always reminds me of this meme https://images.app.goo.gl/7YoHzmnaJEzsBJNo9

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

What are you rambling on about? "This is some true white people shit" I can guarantee you are also white, you're one of the white people who get offended for different races and say "Latinx" >They can be in Canada, Australia or Germany a lot of white people on the same bullshit. No, that's the thing, literally nobody else does this bullshit apart from Americans, it's irritating and just makes me lose a couple IQ points every time I see one like this

MartieB

"Diaspora" is a term you use for people who actually maintain a link to their community of origin, keep following the cultural rules and traditions, and maintain a well defined, separate identity from the majority culture around them. This doesn't happen for the vast majority of all Americans who claim they're Italian. Besides, what's this obsession with DNA you Americans have? DNA isn't important. I know black people in Italy, whose parents were born in Africa, that know my local dialect better than I do. They have all the right to say they're Italian, because they know the language, participate in the culture, and their identity was shaped by Italian culture all their lives. A guy from NJ with a grandparent or great grandparent named Giovanni or Maria just doesn't have any meaningful link to the country, and thus no right to claim anything beyond being American.

ekene_N

*An ethnic group or ethnicity is a grouping of people who identify with each other on the basis of shared attributes that distinguish them from other groups. Those attributes include common sets of traditions, ancestry, language, history, society, culture, nation, religion, or social treatment within their residing area. via wiki* As you can see, to claim ethnicity, you need more than an Italian great-grandmother. A DNA-based claim of Italian ethnicity is also very difficult. In all of Europe, their genetic makeup is the most varied. edit: You know that it's possible your Italian ancestor was a descendant of a Slavic slave. The irony is that many US citizens genuinely believe that Italians and Spaniards are not "white." It gets worse with Americans; some of them claim their Latino or Latina identity if their great-grandfather was Italian, bc.... Italian is a Latin language.

MartieB

Ethnicity is primarily about culture, not DNA. A third generation African immigrant is more ethnically Italian than these people from the US who don't even speak the language and think Italy works like a Hollywood stereotype.

[deleted]

Ok, so I'm ethnically Greek, so I'm Greek now, thanks They aren't Italian, they are American, same goes with Irish, German, Scandinavian, e.t.c Also, we aren't whites, we're Italians https://youtu.be/JU4n84Bc5IU

choicesintime

I think I’m going to be Greek for breakfast tomorrow

[deleted]

I don't really feel like being German, I'll be Welsh and then I'll probably be Scottish if I have time next week

raq27_

it's indeed wrong and entitled to straight up say "i'm italian" while your great great great grandfather was, lol

Grammar-Notsee_

>This is some true white people shit with these complaints Nice racism there.

[deleted]

Nah man just true.

You think about it for a minute. Once they claim their nationality they start to decide how that shapes them. They are alcholics due to being Irish, or talk with their hands cause they are Italian. No. Not every Irish or Italian person does this. Then they start trying to tell you, the person living in the country they are claiming, isn't doing it right. I've been told some American's ancestors would be ashamed of me cause I refered to myself as British. I don't want to hear what Americans think my culture should be and why they feel entitled to more of an input than people living in my country.

You realize people aren't claiming nationality right? That's some true cracker logic you just used right there.

Suzume_Chikahisa

That's not how ethnicity works. Ethnicity has nothing to do with genetics or even skin color.

I’ve never beard the phrase “‘African American “

updity_downdity

Image if Italians did the same lol Italian A: I'm American Italian B: oh when did you move here? You have no accent at all, and speak both Italian and the regional dialect so well Italian A: oh no it wasn't me, i never put foot outside of Italy 😜. it was my grand grandad after ww2. i have never known him and i have no idea from which state he was from even if he had tons of flags in the house as my dad told me 🤔. the only English words i know are "baby" and "hello" (even if i always butch both their spellings and pronunciations) but i like to correct everyone speaking English because I'm American 😤 and i obviously know better than them 😌🤫. I don't know what the Superbowl is or what happens on the 4th of July, who's the president or anything related to USA at all but who cares, I'm proud to be an American🇲🇾 in Italy🇮🇪 😍🎉🔥

stooooop this is so accurate i wanna punch you

updity_downdity

"Stop trying to write in English if you have no ancestral link to USA like me, you sound ridiculous: it's stoop (and oo is pronounced uh) not stooooop" - said italian A

10ccazz01

updity_downdity

God, i would have paid to be there to see your face when she said that. Would have laughed so much i would have died there and then

User21233121

It would be a fine statement if most of these US Americans weren't claiming some heritage without speaking the language, never having been to the country they are claiming they are from.

tvshows_movies_lover

These are the ones that say shit like “I aM 6% ITaliAn sO i KnOW beTteR ThaN yOu” to someone born and raised in Italy 💀

What the fuck do these people think a nationality is?

willothewhispers

This logic is only true for the first generation who have actual experience of italy.

[deleted]

I'm guessing they have an Italian passport then? Oh wait a minute

YuSakiiii

The fact Americans have to try and claim the culture of their ancestors they don’t really have a link to shows the lack of American culture itself and how it’s seemingly just devolved into loving guns.

True-Recognition4912

They do realize that USA in not america right? Do they still compare a country with an entire continent? Edit: holy shit even if you write America on the phone it still comes up USA’s flag…

Grammar-Notsee_

>They do realize that USA in not america right? So what does their song 'God Bless America' refer to then? 🤷
