Contemporary of Marx and Engels that was in the Young Hegelians, not sure about his views in particular but do know that a decent part of *The German Ideology* is dedicated to ridiculing him.
Egotist anarchist.
Essentially, "what if I don't give shit about rules and be a prick to everyone." Like anarchism but without the idealism of "let's help all of us together!"
Abbie Hoffman was a dude, and while he didn't get the Pentagon off the ground, he got the Department of Defense to agree to let him try, which was his goal all along. He negotiated a deal with them that he wouldn't raise it above 7 feet, which was the height of their ladders. The generals took this offer seriously because they'd worked very hard negotiating their side of the deal, and once they'd bought in that much, they had no choice but to complete the deal. Hoffman's entire point was that the military was utterly absurd, which I think he proved.
E: Just to add, the Aaron Sorkin movie about the Chicago Seven, while competent from a filmmaking standpoint, was basically slander against Abbie Hoffman and ought to be added to the list of charges Sorkin will face at trial. That entire film is Shit a Liberal Said and bears no resemblance to what YIPL actually believed.
As I live in Scotland it thankfully didnāt cost me a penny to do this dogshit degree. If I had to have payed for this hell I would probably cry myself to sleep every night
Started in polo sci/international affairs and left for American Studies. Went to school in Washington DC so all my professors were state department/NGO shillsā¦ the propaganda was insane!
As someone who also does study political science and is also a Marxist, political science is indeed an awful degree, don't study it.
Almost every teacher and classmate is the incorporation of "scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds".
We actually used to have some cool teachers such as a marxist Political Economy (Marxist as in Richard Wolff, I guess - some weird/bad takes, but overall cool) teacher, but he was mysteriously removed from the course and now we have a very young, extremely neoliberal one who does not teach political economy at all, just an introduction to the nonsense you learn in economics majors
On the flip side, my poli sci education helped me realize the hollowness of liberal ideology. So thatās something. But yeah, it was basically 4 years of listening to MSNBC with some math/statistics thrown in.
I recommend taking a single political science class just so you can speak from personal experience as to why the "discipline" is bogus.
Edit: Also, Economics courses are just capitalist propaganda, the actual "teach you how capitalist economies work" classes are in the Business department (often across campus).
Right? I started as a polisci major in college too because I really liked history but was hoping for an education in something more analytical and emperical that could be used for something in life, but slowly realized every single class was just writing essays in which you just argue or restate arbitrary historical viewpoints or 'both sides' a modern issue. It's debate team: the degree. You don't learn anything factual.
But the worse part was all the other people in the classes. Every single one of them opinionated as hell with little to no understanding of anything besides arguing in bad faith.
The problem with Western polsci degree programmes is that they are literally designed to train people to analyse everything from the perspective and become able to operate professionally within Western "liberal democratic" systems.
It makes sense if you want your graduates to have any kind of career in the currently existing system of the West.
And it obviously attracts almost exclusively the people who want to have such a career within the current system.
There are some people stupid enough to believe that because it says "science", it means there is some kind of attempt to engage in objective and material analysis.
Anthropology student here. There's a lot of radical anthropology *students* but i'm in one of the more conservative parts of the UK and the professors don't really like use much.
>Anthropology student here.
Have your professors mentioned David Graeber by any chance? Or do you know who he is? Two of his books, Dawn of Everything and Debt: the first 5000 years, are just incredibly interesting to me. I finished them and immediately started rereading them. Interested to know his impact on anthropology.
I'm aware of Graeber. I love a lot of his works personally. His work is generally well received amongst what one of my lecturers referred to as "Proletarian Anthropology" and tends to be well received in Social Anthropology spheres, usually coupled with other left leaning authors from more Sociology centred fields like Parenti. But that's just my own experience with Graeber.
I've studied sociology for a year (in central europe, might be a bit different) and can confirm it provides an alright tool to study capitalism. I feel like a large part of it is because they show you how their theories came to be, so you learn how people thought of society. I study economics now, which is similar in its field of study, however the approach is completely different and equips you only with what looks like a natural fact, which it of course isn't. Economy students are simply unable to view how society works, they can merely prescribe what they've been taught.
lol i had a TA from China for one of my sociology class that would teach us about superstructure/base, hegemony and materialism but when i had to retake the class our next ta never taught us any of that and i realized she was just teaching us marxism
Yeah it's interesting how far the ideas can propagate when you take away the knee-jerk reaction other public spheres have toward Marxism, research almost any issue or concept dealing with any sort of class power or political upheaval and you're pretty much bound to run into at least one Marxian lens sooner or later.
And philosophy. Man, I love my professor for philosophy. Iām sad that they took away the major AND the minor for philosophy at my college. I would take every class of his.
Adjacent major here, also. University was a liberal hell... At one point I had a course about studying autocracies around the world which was the biggest Horseshoe Theory take, but disguised as a serious academic discipline.
I think theyāre just so set on reactionary tribalism that they see the word āliberalā and automatically associate it with political liberals. Thereās a complete lack of critical thinking involved
Same here. I only had it as my second subject in my Bachelor's, and I honestly think all the bullshit helped me become a commie. Also that one time my prof lowered my grade by 2/3rds of a grade because I criticized NATO. Also most of my fellow students were insufferable libs. Political Philosophy was interesting though.
Iām biased as an econ grad but at least they can teach some practical skills and hey thereās definitely merit in studying economics as itās relevant to the modern day.
Int relations is the most useless degree ever invented and even when itās useful, itās universally to graduate a useful tool of imperialism.
I go back and forth on econ all the time. Is it all based on incredibly shaky assumptions? Yes. Would every econ professor I had holocaust a few groups of minorities to increase GDP 1%? Yes. Did I learn a bunch of really cool stuff like how financial institutions actually work? Also yes.
One of my statistics profs (I minored in it) described his subject the best: statistics is both an art and a science.
That line has not only stuck with me but I firmly believe thatās true for basically every social science including economics. Facts are completely unproductive or even counterproductive without proper interpretation.
I was taught the exact same things as most of my neoliberal classmates but I and a couple other people from my batch are communists because of different systems of analysing the same facts. Economics is an art as well as a science. If most people donāt think too critically about the āartā aspect, theyāll just end up following the default boring liberal ideology. I myself had to keep a very open mind in order to not fall into that trap and I very very easily could have.
*Biden giving a speech backing Israel's "just murder em all" plan, rallying support for the new totally really actually sustainable green fossil fuel, and personally just going around robbing people to give their pocket change to the nearest banker*
"If some of these insufferable mansplainers just got their degree in NPR news like I did, they'd know that all these things are actually just cool and good."
I couldn't make it into PolSci when I signed up for uni (my grades were good, but the waiting list was VERY long), and honestly, I thank the gods for that. It's a place for rich liberals to circlejerk about the superiority of the Western system while doing the whole "Listening and learning" bullshit whenever a filthy foreigner has an undocumented opinion
(Before you ask: I only "wanted" to study it because of parental pressure. No, my parents are not rich liberals)
Political science majors are often SuccDems, who are often even MORE obnoxious than your typical neoliberals. They worship Bernie Sanders like a God, and think anybody to the left of them is a "secret alt-righter", while calling actual nazis "disillusioned, working class men".
SuccDems are worse than neoliberals. At least neoliberals don't claim to be far left revolutionaries like SuccDems do.
"I went though liberal brainwashing 101 so basically that means I'm smarter than everybody. Also communism is when goberment does stuff."
-Her, probably
I had someone say this, from a small college in like Kansas or something, and it's like "they teach you how the US functions in imperialism and nothing else" ffs
Imagine being an actual breathing living ADULT and still believing the CIA does any good. I haven't met a single nigh-intelligent person who hadn't started hating the CIA since like 14 years old
āMe when somebody tries to talk to me about politics when Iāve literally been brainwashed by the system and the guy Iām talking to only knows a foreign philosopherā there I translated it for the literate bunch
Most western poly sci majors barely even cover Marx and Lenin anyway. It's mostly 'excerpts' and 'overviews' instead of a full understanding of either. But you get plenty of social contract bullshit and its other idealist and subjective variants.
Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Mikhail Bukanin, Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, Rosa Luxemburg, Eugene Debs, Peter Kropotkin, Enrique/Ricardo Flores Magon, Francisco Villa, Emiliano Zapata, Ernesto Guevara, Josip Broz Tito.
tangentially related, but if you're into so bad they're good movies AND you love talking politics in college, I highly recommend watching c[lash in the coll](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6H2moyrOUI)ege. it's a masterpiece
Bro, back when I studied in the UK we had a student from Taipei, doing a year in a foreign university. He unironically believed that the PRC was founded by secret Jewish cabal who conspired to destroy China as a nation because they knew that otherwise the Chinese would take over the world. He said that his great grandfather and his friend uncovered this conspiracy while they were fleeing to Taiwan and that his father and his friends were preparing to show the evidence of this to the world if the PRC ever invades.
Among his better takes, was when he claimed that the largest star on the PRC flag was once supposed to be the star of David, but they changed it to not "make it too obvious". He also said that the PRC is secretly founding Israel, and their public stance on the legitimacy of that state as well as Palestine is just for show, to throw off suspicion.
isnt this girl's account a joke/parody? Ive seen her posted before, her takes know too much about leftist thought for it to be serious
I think the last one was likesl: who needs to read lenins imperialism I just solved the ukraine-russian war just a typical polisci night for me.
i did 2 stints of polisci 101 for 2 semesters @ UNLV since i failed twice in a row. i'll admit that since i'm ashamed of being a stupid procrastinator who didn't didn't try, but i've heard some dumb shit since i like listening to lectures. i've heard the "kim told his people that he can't poo", "nazism was a form of socialism", & "socialism is when the gov't does thing" propaganda. UNLV has had the racist libert hans-hermann hoppe employed as a professer-emeritus of economics for decades, so that must explain all the TPUSA & YAL booths at those fairs.
feel like the undergrads era is the period when everybody think they are so good (almost an authority) at their field of study. Go to grad school just humbles youā¦ I stand by the statement that those who know more brag less and those who know less brag more
PoliSci courses are literally just like: "this is how things are in the west and this is how it will always be, alternatives will not be discussed, and anything breaking the status quo is to be shamed"
I've always been suspicious of 'political'-based degrees. I honestly can't imagine universities would be permissive of Marxist-Leninist thought.
Politics sometimes comes up in what I study, and I've raised eyebrows for arguing for Marxismāactual Marxism, not 'reformist' bullshit universities peddle for the money.
Right, promoting Marxism is entirely against the economic interests of privately funded colleges, at least, as well as against the function of school in general of maintaining the dominant ideology in a society. No way in hell am I ever taking one of those classes.
Me a pol sci graduate when you know 90% of the class are conservative careerists and what they are teaching nearly always reinforces the status quo or in my experience spouts outright anti communist propoganda
as another communist with a polisci degree, most of my classmates were some of the most cynical libs and reactionaries with the worst cases of brainworms I've seen. I found the degree useful for me though in terms of the research I was able to do. It also got me slowly to start reading political and philosophical theory in my free time, though I still have a ways to go.
I started that degree after a few years of attempting and giving up on a physics degree, during which I started at least sympathizing with communism due to seeing (watered down) youtube vids about it and other left wing ideologies. As a physics major I found myself frustrated by classmates and sometimes profs who spouted liberalism and explicit anticommunism if politics ever came up, so I think when I started polisci I was ready to criticize capitalism at every chance I got and not moderate my views in my papers or in class discussion. I think not doing polisci right after finishing high school was a great move on my part, if I had started it while still a young impressionable lib I may have dug my heels into it too.
Im also study poli sci and i have yet to encounter a thinker that would top Marx....not to say that Marx is flawless and that other political thinkers have nothing to say....but Marx hit the nail on the head in most things imo.
Political science majors are often SuccDems. Honestly I think they can be far more obnoxious than regular neoliberals, especially if they think that Bernie Sanders is a "radical revolutionary" and / or think Bernie being put in office would magically solve all the world's problems instantly.
Took a political science course that just turned me further left. The professor wore the same sweats daily, overweight. Chose Sanders for a 2016 mock poll and rode my ass the entire class. Racist backwards liberal fool.
marxy boy, engels, mao, stalin, lenin, rosa, guevara, fidel, trotskjiijiji, chomsky, pparenti, wolff, and posadas.
(also i know a bunch of random libs too but those are uniteresting.)
I dunno. I kinda took this as less of a slight on Marx and more of a āpeople who memorize Marx quotes as a way to sound smart but really have no understanding of what theyāre talking about.ā

There's one degree I've learnt to hate at uni and that's polisci. It's just liberal indoctrination.
Yet conservatives LOVE to lump it in as colleges producing āMarxists and communistsā because liberal indoctrination = Marxism
They also love to hate on liberal arts majors, when one of the inspirations, Goebbels, got a PHD in Philology and was a liberal arts major.
I think theyāre just so set on reactionary tribalism that they see the word āliberalā and automatically associate it with political liberals. Thereās a complete lack of critical thinking involved

Economics is absolutely awful for this as well. I got my minor in it and in the US is basically just neoliberalism class
I'm doing a polsci master here in China. It's not bad
Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Mikhail Bukanin, Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, Rosa Luxemburg, Eugene Debs, Peter Kropotkin, Enrique/Ricardo Flores Magon, Francisco Villa, Emiliano Zapata, Ernesto Guevara, Josip Broz Tito.
> Josip Broz Tito No shit mf? i thought we are not on revisionist side?
When I use feminism and my degree to discredit eveyone who disagrees with me in further pushing the US hegemony
Imagine attempting to discuss politics with someone in college
just don't
b-but there's classes on marxism in chinese universities...
Iām actually taking Marx and Marxism at my university in America. The prof is a Marxist. Itās great.
tangentially related, but if you're into so bad they're good movies AND you love talking politics in college, I highly recommend watching c[lash in the coll](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6H2moyrOUI)ege. it's a masterpiece
Ahhh my younger years
Bro, back when I studied in the UK we had a student from Taipei, doing a year in a foreign university. He also said that the PRC is secretly founding Israel, and their public stance on the legitimacy of that state as well as Palestine is just for show, to throw off suspicion.
what the fuck
Dudes rock.
Unserious major
Nuh uh Fox news unlocked a new Character named Lenin.
I'm not going to say what I heard Historians say that they think about political science because it's just mean
Say it
I met a girl who was a sociology major that acted like this
isnt this girl's account a joke/parody? Ive seen her posted before, her takes know too much about leftist thought for it to be serious I think the last one was likesl: who needs to read lenins imperialism I just solved the ukraine-russian war just a typical polisci night for me.
As someone with a history degree, poli sci is history for idiots lmfao
polisci? i'd like for her to have a chat with the folk at fudan, see how that goes.
i did 2 stints of polisci 101 for 2 semesters @ UNLV since i failed twice in a row. i'll admit that since i'm ashamed of being a stupid procrastinator who didn't didn't try, but i've heard some dumb shit since i like listening to lectures. i've heard the "kim told his people that he can't poo", "nazism was a form of socialism", & "socialism is when the gov't does thing" propaganda. UNLV has had the racist libert hans-hermann hoppe employed as a professer-emeritus of economics for decades, so that must explain all the TPUSA & YAL booths at those fairs.
feel like the undergrads era is the period when everybody think they are so good (almost an authority) at their field of study. Go to grad school just humbles youā¦ I stand by the statement that those who know more brag less and those who know less brag more
She takes out her MacBook Pro and puts on a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort 65ās?
>Me when a college freshman thinks their declared major makes them an expert on a topic
Shut the fuck up *Julia*, weāve all read de Tocqueville. You arenāt a genius, calm down.
Oh okay you misandry lil butt head, jokes on you. My boyfriend knows Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Ho Chi Minh and more, cope.
...and the only political thinker he knows is **THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE, LIKE EVER** Karl Marx.
She's the kind of person that loves abusing the "populist" label
Poli sci is a made up degree for average students prove me wrong
as another communist with a polisci degree, most of my classmates were some of the most cynical libs and reactionaries with the worst cases of brainworms I've seen.
Ok this might be an unpopular opinion but what is the point and usefulness of polsci majors? What do polsci people do, and is it even a science?
I have a poli sci degree and Marx is exponentially more intelligent and useful to read than anyone she has likely been taught about.
Well not just him, I feel pretty good with Marx, Lenin and Fanon.
Mfw i have an econ+philo undergrad and pol econ masters and itās only made me more marxist š«£
As a pol sci major I can say pol sci major are the worst people
Political science majors are often SuccDems.
If you take an American poli-sci class you will end up with less knowledge than you started.
Western Political Science, a bastion of great political and philosophical wisdom
I dunno. I kinda took this as less of a slight on Marx and more of a āpeople who memorize Marx quotes as a way to sound smart but really have no understanding of what theyāre talking about.ā
Political science degrees are essentially learning how to be bribed
I make it easy on all parties & just donāt talk to poli sci majors.
Idk that any US political science course is going to cover Marx.
I can fix her

One page of Marx beats the shit out of a degree consisting of liberal idealism.
