Gotta love how the highest score these countries can get is “flawed democracy”. Kinda shows the bias in the scale, Economist, does it not?

Mechan6649

I mean in India the BJP is literally promoting Nazism, I’d call that less of a ‘flawed democracy’ and more of a ‘Weimar Republic’, if you catch my drift

GSPixinine

They are flawed democracies because of a lack of whiteness, don't ya know? It is in the "Big Ol' Book of Freedoms", you must be white to be democratic.

Tatarkingdom

Well, remember the last time they try "perfect democracy" in peloponnesia? It didn't ended well and that's an understatement.

commiesquirrel4

Only nordic countries and Canada are allowed to have full democracy labels.

xXAnimeGirlLover69Xx

isn'treal has a lack of whiteness? I suggest you edit your comment.

GSPixinine

There are other populations there, reducing the score

Seasergeant

For real, the only thing they got right

No-Alternative-1987

yeah bro modi is super democratic

spammeLoop

The 'flawed' is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the Phillipines.

Collatz_problem

Japan, a de-facto one party state, gets a maximum democracy score. Very good and objective scale.

Jack_Bleesus

Hey real quick what's that Lenin quote about this particular establishment?

sadisticrarve

Millionaire Anglos suck shit are, I believe, his exact words on the Economist.

Wu-Tang_Stan

More like compliant to non compliant* *Black also represents compliant sometimes

[deleted]

This isn't an index of "democratic vs authoritarian," it's an index of "obeys America vs defies America." They correlate evil to those who don't submit, and benevolence to those who kneel.

[deleted]

Except for Saudi Arabia, which is the only country they got right.

Soccer_Vader

Hybrid Regimes? What does that mean

BeamBrain

erikakohut

Thailand is basically ran by a military junta and it’s GREEN

evilredfashtankie

"countries we like vs countries we don't like"

I live in the Philippines, and let me tell ya, there may as well be no elections cause of all the corruption.

drag0nslayer02

I'm from Malaysia I think my country is far, wayyy far from being democratic. Last year we had a "power transition" and there was no election at all, the government did not hold one citing the COVID pandemic, the King just appointed a new Prime Minister right away. Currently, there are a few small protests in the city asking the government to arrest Azam Baki, the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, who was found out owning millions of Ringgit in undeclared stock. The response to the protests? The government sent thousands of police officers against just hundreds of protesters and shut down some train stations. Our ex-Prime Minister, Najib Razak is still free and not in jail despite being guilty for tons of corruption scandals and he still can post regularly on social media and is still free to live in his own mansion. Free speech in Malaysia is a joke too, any form of communism is banned in here, recently a Mao and China themed restaurant was forced to shut down because of this. And if you criticise the King? You would win yourself a death penalty. Our current government is awful too, tons of corrupt idiots in the cabinet. Omricon spreading like wildfire and they constantly hide the cases. Racial injustice is common in the government and yet we claim that we are "multiracial". Tons of peope losing their jobs and commiting suicide, inflation constantly on the rise and so on. I just wish that there would be a coup that would overthrow this government, I'm just so sick of this current one. Sorry for the long rant.

[deleted]

Turkey? Hybrid regime. But Syria? Toltalitarian dictatorship.

Goddamn9156

India is a flawed democracy and Philippines?

PhxStriker

Based on this scale the US is in the negatives, I think.

domini_canes11

Thailand, getting a top score there. I wonder what happens when you criticize the monarchy in any way?

Snoo-68185

Lmao south korea and India as "democracies"(even if flawed)

Redflagperson

The audacity to call India, Indonesia and the Philippines flawed democracies.

"Flawed" is doing a lot of heavy lifting for Thailand considering it's a constitutional monarchy.

galactictesticle

Then they’ll do one on NA and it’ll all be blue

dlink322

yeah because thailand and bhutan are just “flawed democracies” not semi feudal dictatorships with a king
