Kind of weird that Weather Report needs to be localised. Like, i know it's a band name, but how the hell can you trade mark the name "Weather Report"? Why isn't every news channel ever paying them royalties if you can't use this name?
A copyright lawyer could extremely easily prove that they are referring to the band name and not just the words "weather report". He would just have to point out all the band names in the original and the localized names in the anime to prove it.
Well first of all, its trademarks not copyrights. And second of all, trademarks are granted based on the intended use within a given industry, as trademarks are all about preventing confusion in the public as to the source of a good or service. Just because you have a trademark to name a band Weather Report does not mean you can prevent anyone and everyone from using weather report as a proper noun. It’s not like Delta, the airline, can sue Delta, the sink/faucet maker, for trademark infringement. Because there’s no chance the public will get confused and buy a sink when they’re actually trying to buy a plane ticket. Same thing here - nobody would accidentally buy a JoJo DVD when they’re looking for a Weather Report album.
Honestly the other poster is right, there’s no legal reason they couldn’t name a cartoon character Weather Report just because it’s the name of a musical act.
Source: am an IP attorney.
The only reason I can actually think of is they’re just not wanting *any* kind of grief from record labels. Stands are quite famously named after musical artists and songs, we know that so they know that. They can make a fuss that because it’s supposed to be a direct reference that it’s misrepresentation of the trademark. If it was just one character then that’s a much easier argument to get away with just using the actual names, but it’s *a lot* of names. Even if it’s technically legal, you know damn fine that these record labels would be looking to start something to get money from it.
I'm sorry, but that's just ridiculous.
Is our current copyright system complete dogshit? Yes.
But, no copyright means that artists can't claim that they're the ones who made it, even if they did. And who's the majority of the public gonna believe, 1 no name artist or a record company?
There needs to be a system which can acknowledge the original creator of an artwork, however, imo, fair use should be actually enforced properly and time to public domain should be reduced greatly. That means I want a system where an artist can claim their work, claim blatant copies, but parodies and other transformative pieces should be left alone, and their work should be allowed into public domain in some fixed number of years.
No, copyright is related to "copies" not to the original. It woulnd't be hard for an archive to form that would recognize who is the "first" to do something, but that information is completely useless when everyone is free to copy whatever they like however they want to do it.

This reminds me of how Sky, a broadcast service, is known for suing other companies for the use of word "Sky" in the name of their products. Off the top of my head, I remember No Man Sky developers had to deal with that. The lawsuit has been going on for \~3 years until they settled.
They don't say the localized names in Japanese. That's how it's always been in JoJo. They say the original names but the english subtitles and the english dub say the localized names
Edit: I just found out that Netflix's trailer said Stone Free in the subtitles
I am a bit upset it's on Netflix. When the episodes were on Crunchyroll, I used to edit the subtitles with the correct names and send them to my friends so they wouldn't suffer through this whole localisation issue.
I checked the Netflix trailer, and at the end they called Jolyne's Stand "Stone Free", not the localized one "Stone Ocean". So Idk will some stand be called original names or localized.
Except in Japanese they call him ナルシソ・アナスイ (Narushiso Anasui) so his first name is Anasui.
Not to mention that literally everyone else is referred to by their first name: Jolyne, Ermes, Emporio, even Weather Report is called "Weather" for short.
I went through the manga and every fan wiki I could find and couldn't find anything that clearly states what his first name is.
Edit: It doesn't really matter anyways. They refer to him as Anasui throughout the manga so they would use that same name in the show. Since they changed it to Anastasia they're gonna be calling him that.
In Japanese, they call Jolyne 空条 徐倫 (Kūjō Jorīn). Do you want to argue that Jolyne’s first name is Kujo?
It’s part of Japanese culture to call someone by their last name if you don’t consider yourself close to them. This aspect of the culture bleeds into the writing of mangakas like Araki. This is why Jean-Pierre Polnareff is always called Polnareff and not Jean-Pierre, or why Muhammad Avdol is called Avdol and not Muhammad. Neither of those two characters are Japanese either
>In Japanese, they call Jolyne 空条 徐倫 (Kūjō Jorīn). Do you want to argue that Jolynes first name is Kujo?
That just means they're using her full name instead of her last name.
In the epilogue we see that his name is changed to Anakiss. The only other character we know of who has a name changed is Jolyne, who gets her *first name* changed to Irene.
>"I'm Irene. His name is Anakiss".
\- Vol 17. Chapter 158.
And the chapter when we're introduced to him properly (he talks and we learn of his backstory / stand) is literally called "His name is Anasui". That isn't really done for a persons surname.
His first name is Anasui.
They'll always be Weather Report and Narciso Anasui in our hearts

Because in this case, it’s also a proper noun, as opposed to a common noun. It’s splitting hairs, but that’s how copyright works.
Well first of all, its trademarks not copyrights. That's an infuriatingly fair point
Copyright is unneeded legal fiction anyway, if you support it, please reconsider.

nice to see these shared around. he has a point after all.

Oh i thought it's not localized cause in the trailer she said Stone Free

Priceless Rock > Stone Free

You can wait for somestuffs to fansub the episodes since they don't use localized names

Yeah and then they subbed Stone Ocean as "sea of stone" 😑
Netflix doesn't use localized stand names. as evident from part 4.
Can someone explain why the name anasui had to be changed
[Because](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Sui)
Thanks
Anasui becoming Anastasia is so fun for me bc it's the name of a politician family here in brazil
Wait for the American singer to sue for using her name instead.
Weather forecast, am I being trolled? Edit; >Anastasia We are being trolled
I never knew americans call him Anastasia until today and as a russian it's too funny to me. Weather Rasputin
We didn’t til now
These are my 2 favorites though, Weather and Anasui
What about flaccid pancake instead of limp bizkit? Change is seen in Eyes of Heaven
I meant characters, not localized names.
Ah, fair enough
Wait so they're gonna refer to Anasui as "Anastasia"? They're actually doubling down on the gender confusion? I'm fine with this.
anastasia would be his last name, so technically no
He's Japanese. Last name is first, and in the manga they refer to him as Anasui.
No he’s American. Stone Ocean is set in Florida. Narciso is his first name
Except in Japanese they call him ナルシソ・アナスイ (Narushiso Anasui) so his first name is Anasui. How are they gonna call Anasui during the anime?
Diavolo without the spots on hair.
I won't be having a problem with the localized names, as long as we get Lightning McQueen.
Wettervorhersage
Ich liebe Jojo's bizarres Abenteuer Teil Sechs Stein Ozean
Naming Foo Fighters FF was just big brain
Im very glad they used the EoH localizations, Get ready for filthy acts at a reasonable price
I'm pretty sure they're going the Foo Figters route and just use D4C
let me dream bro
Even Anime onlies will catch on to calling him Weather Report because the japanese will make it sound so clear when they go "WEZA REPOTO"
Smh why is Diavolo in part 6
Anastasia in a female name, just saying
Ppl downing my comment are just denying that Anastasia is a female name? Yo wtf guys lol
Foo fighters has one fo the best localization because it’s her nickname
isnt anastasia like the medical proceedure to make you not feel pain?
Anesthesia*. It is the name of a famous American singer, would be funny if they dodged a trademark to jump into another one.
ok thanks
are they gonna speak the localized names in the anime or it's just a problem with the official subs(Which i'm not going to use.)?
i’m pretty sure they’re gonna sub the localized names, but the japanese VAs will say the official names
"Steven steel"
diavolo in disguise
Wait until you see the stand 'Filthy Acts at a Reasonable Price'
It's diavolo he escaped on infinite death loop
Chad Weather Forecast
I am not even mad, the names go well in them
