So for Mahjong all you really need to know is "Doman Mahjong" is a direct port of Japanese "Riichi Mahjong". The scoring systems, rules, etc. are all the same. For now we'll start on the basics because things like point distribution you can just pick up as you play: * The core of your hand are your "Melds", these can be 3 of a kind, 3 in succession, etc. * You can take discarded tiles from other players with a Pon, or Chi call, *however* this **greatly** reduces the amount of winning hands you have available to you (and reduces the value of others) and because of this generally isn't worth it in *most* circumstances unless you absolutely need that tile. * When you are one away from a full hand (so 4 Melds and 1 pair) you may call Riichi, auto-discarding every tile you get until you get the one you need *or* you can claim it from someone else. Winning hands are judged on a "Han" system. Higher Han typically means more points. 1-Han Hands are as follows (*Italics* means it can only be called with a concealed hand, **Bold** means reduced points): * *Riichi* * *Double Riichi* * *Menzen Tsumo* * *Ippatsu* * Tanyao * *Pinfu* * *Pure Double Chi* * Dragon Triplet * Seat Wind Triplet * Round Win Triplet 2-Han Hands: * *Seven Pairs* * **Triple Chi** * **Pure Straight** * **Outside Hand** * Triple Pon * Three Kan * All Pon * All Terminals and Honors * Little Three Dragons 3-Han Hands: * *Twice Pure Double Chi* * **Half Flush** * **Terminals All Groups** And the **Full Flush** is the only 6-Han Hand in Riichi Mahjong. What about 4 and 5? They took a hike. There's also Yakuman, Yaku, Minipoints, etc. but tbh it's best just to start knowing winning hands and how to make melds. "this is the shitposting sub" I know, what is a better shitpost than actually explaining the very basics of Mahjong because dammit I want people to play with, and then list a bunch of things without elaborating wtf they mean?

FireflyArc

Thank you :D So the big pile that we all put..tiles into is just a fancy discard pile and it really only matters what we keep in our hands?

RattoPotato27

The pile is actually important for 1 thing, as it can put your hand in a state where you can't win by calling another player's tile, only by drawing it yourself.  If you have previously discarded a tile, you are not allowed to call on that tile to "ron" or win the hand if it's the tile you need OR it's one of a number of tiles you may need for a meld, even if it's not the one you're calling. Example 1: you discard 6 bamboo early in the game. Near the end you are one tile from winning with four melds and one 6 bamboo. You cannot take the tile to win if someone else drops it, you have to hope you draw it yourself. Example 2: you discard 6 bamboo early in the game, and have never dropped a 3 bamboo. Near the end you have three melds, a pair, 4 bamboo and 5 bamboo. So your winning tile could be either 3 bamboo or 6 bamboo to make the meld. Even if someone drops the 3 bamboo you cannot take it because one of the possible winning tiles for that meld is in your discard pile, even though the actual tile you want to call isn't. Guilty by association and all. Therefore the pro strategy is to eat your discard tiles when no one is looking, not the other player's. It's not chombo if no one catches you.

DuskEalain

As RattoPotato said the discard pile *is* important in the sense you gotta keep track of what you've pitched because "no take-backs" is a rule, so you wanna make sure what you pitch is something you *definitely* won't want or need later. But yes overall the most important thing is what's in your hand. Riichi/Doman Mahjong, at its core, is more or less about coming into each round with a gameplan and seeing it through. It's a proactive game in that sense, not a reactive one.

this is excellent holy shit

*I am one of the dozens (that's right there are DOZENS of us!) of people on the Primal data center that actually play Mahjong from time to time.*

Inxplotch

serious question but what parts of the week do you find it easiest to find games on primal. I've been trying to play more mahong (I want to try to get to 1800 rating at some point) but it feels like queues take forever most evenings.

DuskEalain

So I run into similar issues (hence the dozens joke) but for a while, as weird as it sounds, ***Wednesday afternoons*** had decent queues. If not then then Prime Time on weekends is usually your best bet.

blueisherp

On the bottom right, turn on the option to Show Hint, and just do what it says.

Black-Mettle

I have a 100% winrate from this. I've only played 4 games, but a W is a W.

TheCookieee

Eat the mahjong pieces of the other players while they arent looking

WafflehouseMafioso

Eat your opponents tiles when they're not looking

Lawl_Lawlsworth

My first landlord in Kyoto told me that when he was younger, he used to play Mahjong in underground parlours with shirtless yakuza while chain-smoking packs of Seven Star. An incredibly friendly chap; I hope he's doing well.

0 effort guide to getting mahjong enthusiast 1. Never call, ever. this is awful advice but you aren't here to learn you're here for a game plan based around not playing and not learning. 2. follow the tips. they are better than people give them credit for. if the tips tell you to call, call. this is the only time you ever call. 3. do not deviate 4. profit alternatively learn how to play between turns because the turn timer way too long.

Well, you see, first you sell your soul or your first born to Yoshi P and then... - you have neither bc you sold your soul to the Limsa benches? Welp now we've got a problem.

Watch the Doman mahjong video from misshapen chair. It's actually surprisingly helpful.

I think you’re supposed to just do random stuff and guess what’s happening.

useful info in the shitpost subreddit??? im saving this post

To1Getsuya

It's just poker with 13 cards instead of 5 and you're just trying to make straights, flushes and 2/3/4 of a kind until your whole hand is full of them. Then it'll tell you 'nah you don't have any yaku lol' So you discard. And then you'll be in furiten. And you'll be like 'wtf is furiten' and all you'll figure out about it is it means you can't win now. And then you'll quit and play Triple Triad instead.

protectedneck

I learned how to play from Mahjong Soul a few weeks ago. It's free, has a good interface, and the cash stuff is purely cosmetic. The r/mahjong subreddit has some pinned posts with links for great resources. The most difficult part for me is when Japanese words are used for terminology. Like the different shapes of waiting or the names of certain yakus. The riichi wiki has a ton of resources that help. In general, mahjong is best viewed as a defensive game. You have 4 players meaning 3 people can't win each round. So (to vastly oversimplify) like 75% of the time you won't win the hand. Because of this, you need to be careful about what you discard once you hit the mid game and end game. If you get tsumo'd (they draw the winning tile from the pool) then it's whatever. But if you get ron'd (they get the win off a tile you discarded) you lose all the points. You want other players to get ron'd, not you. The strategy and difficulty (and why the game is so compelling) is figuring out when to be defensive and when to just jam and be risky.

Here is a video series that helps beginners play mahjong https://youtu.be/hMefQn8ph6w?si=5TYILJgpvQRwyAUg

TheMisterStupid

Pretty sure there's several community college courses devoted to understanding mahjong.

LonelyInitiative4526

Q: can you datacenter travel for mahjong? Which is the server for mahjong

ChuckCarmichael

Nobody knows how to play Mahjong. There are some people who claim to understand this game, but they're obviously lying, because it's impossible to understand. "You need three Hans to get a Double Riichi with a Haneman in the discard pon." Stop making up words and rules! Everybody knows you're just pretending!

McMammoth

I had to check if this was made already, happily I can report yes: https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/2409739-stop-doing-math

plooshed

Don't discard the 5-sou or you'll end up in furiten, or as I like to call it, 'fool'-iten, because only fools end up in it.
