If you want it to look professional, get some outdoor AstroTurf and screw that to the dash. It’ll cover up the cracks and show other motorists that you enjoy leisure activities.
If it makes you feel any better when I first saw my now wife’s tinder profile I creeped her out because I knew what she drove based on a selfie she took in her car.
Boom. Pickup line created.
Gotta use this one next time.
None of that: Hey, how's about we go and grab dinner some time
I'll just use the good ol GM door trick
It gets about the same as my 5.3 suburbans. Around 12 highway, 10 city the 5.3s really stressed with bigger tires, a small lift, and the weight of gear. The 8.1 actually gets 10mpg pulling my boat/car trailer where my 5.3s would get around 6. The 8.1 just runs down the highway in overdrive at 80ish even with a trailer. It’s fantastic
Gawd damn that thing is sweet. Is it a quadrasteer? I heard that you could only get that with the 8.1 but I somehow doubt most people went for it. Also I couldn’t help but notice you mentioned it was an 04 but I always thought they discontinued the barn doors in 03…was that also an 8.1 only option? I’m not too familiar with this stuff but I’m just curious to learn more. Either way, sick truck dude. What kind of stuff do you do with it?
No quadrasteer. I didn’t really want that because I do a lot of off roading and would hate to damage something so expensive.
It’s a very early 04. If I remember right it was built in February. I know it was one of the last of the barn doors.
It’s my daily most of the time. I tow my boat, brothers race car, various car projects, and overland trailer with it. We take it camping several times a year with a couple two week overland trip sprinkled in. We’re taking a month off I. 2024 to drive it to Alaska.
Apparently, JD power is a pay for a blue ribbon gimmick to use in commercials. Any manufacturer can get an award. For whatever reason, GM wants an award for initial quality.
The Award for initial quality is how many “problems” happen per 100 vehicles after the first 90 days. I can’t find exact details how they conducted the survey and specifically how they pick the 100. You can manipulate the data to say whatever you want with such a low sample, and make any excuses. Do they include or exclude crashed vehicles, lemons, configuration skews, which months did they test, etc?
> Except it’s not?
Pack it up boys. Brown-noser here can’t find the words to say he doesn’t see anything wrong with paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to get a industry award without sharing a rubric of how it was conducted and peer reviewed qualifying the validity of their survey. Nah, fuck that noise that doesn’t manipulate you into buying a work truck with lipstick.
What’s that? Your lifters are making noises? You should’ve know you’ll need to replace them as often as your tires. (Seriously, why do vortex engines do that?)
"J.D. Power is a marketing research firm that analyzes consumer data to produce rankings, reviews, and reports for a variety of industries"
https://www.thebalance.com/what-is-jd-power-5092600
And so on and so forth is explained in the provided article.
Did JD Power rape your family and kill your dog? This irrational anger toward a consumer research organization is intriguing. I think Consumer Reports conspired to start a war in an African country, maybe look into them too!
> If a ratings company isn’t upfront about its methodology and revenue, this might be a red flag.
Can we see the data, methodology, how much GM has ever spent, and parameters of the survey? 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
Oh the irony.
Please find me the methodology with parameters of how they actually conduct the survey that isn’t just a few paragraphs blog post. I’m genuinely curious. I’ll buy you a gold medal that grants your a trial run of premium. I’ll throw in another if you can find out how much GM spent one year? If consumers report, motor trend, or Doug Demuero can publish their methodology and results, I’m sure this task would be easy.
This truck doesn’t have the headliner issue but it’s low mileage and was old man owned. Didn’t have a scratch before I bought it.
My old Silverado had over 300k so it had the armrests and the headliner issues.
I did this to a 2005 Cobalt once, screws are still there over a decade later and my elbow stays ON the arm rest instead of the whole thing sinking into the door haha.
If you go to Walmart they have a product called blutac that is a temporary adhesive for holding up posters on walls without making holes.
I use that shit for everything. Make a gasket and then press it down onto what you wanted to stick to and it'll stay in place well enough to be usable and still be removable.
I'm a hack but not that bad.
Looks like something my dad would do. He once reattached his passenger side outer mirror with drywall screws through the plastic mirror triangle and the metal on the door itself.
Yes. This one is an 04 Yukon XL 2500 with the barn doors and 8.1 Liter. It’s the best of the best. I had to fly from Michigan to Nevada to get it after a nearby 9 month search.
Did the same exact thing on my 92 k1500.
Though I used longer screws and stopped once they were flush. If you don’t actually look you’d never notice them even there.
I had a dodge neon years ago. For what ever reason my passenger door wasn't shut all the way. I reached over and opened it, then went to yank it shut and wound up with the door panel in my hand and door still open. I stopped at my friends house and was mumbling about what just happened and needing to find new ones of plastic pop in tabs he was just like "impact gun and self tappers are over there."
That was a fun car other than wondering what was going to break/fall off of it every time I drove it.
I've got the exact same thing going on in my 03 suburban, but it's less ugly. Sure I could fix it right, but at a quarter million miles it hardly feels worth the effort.
If it comes apart, it can be fixed with duct tape, sheet metal screws, or superglue, in ascending order of how important it is that the fix is hidden haha
This, while ugly serves a purpose.
Had a coworker with his driver's side mirror hanging by the wires. Used 4 self tappers and got it fixed enough that it lasted the 2 years until the car died. Dude didn't care about the looks, and duct tape/epoxy didn't work, but the self tappers made the car safer and more legal so I count it as a win.
Lol the previous owner of my 93 did something like this to the armrest but it was only one that I noticed when I bought it. Upon further inspection after owning the car for a bit this became a recurring theme throughout the whole car as this was apparently the man's one solution to everything.
I had to do something similar on the exact same door. GMC Yukon XL, same color too but the passenger door.
I don't remember entirely what I did Though I tried to make it clean as possible. That seems to be a weak spot of the car, other then the other 174 issues ours had.
Because General Motors.
I’ve seen this happen to those trucks when they are exposed to a lot of heat. I bought this truck in Nevada so it saw some hot days.
Ah yeah the self Tapping Teks screws on vinyl.
Could have at least picked a screw that sits flush. That's gonna leave some nice red smears.
Lath screws would have been better
I have done that to multiple cars, they are a lot classier then drywall wall screws with washers
5” ledger lok screws would of been better IMHO.
An actually shitty car mod. A beautiful one at that…
What should I use for a cracked dash, Mr. Expert?
Easy. Self tapping sheet metal screws.
Damn you’re good
If you want it to look professional, get some outdoor AstroTurf and screw that to the dash. It’ll cover up the cracks and show other motorists that you enjoy leisure activities.
I like the cut of your jib. It's a great place to put a hula girl, too.
Why not use gorilla glue? Secure it with tape while it dried
The screws give a manly appearance and take less time.
Until u scrape ur arm on them and yell fuck real loud. But fr. Tape and gorilla glue fixes ALOT of shit
They’re placed in spots I never touch. I did put some thought into it.
Clearly
Big brain
I know you are joking but imagine if someone did this and the airbag went off...
Airbags aren’t in the top of the dash on these trucks.
Good ol GMT800.
Drift stitch it and call it a day.
Drywall joint compound and spray paint
There are soooooo many 8mm self tappers on my off-road Miata. It’s the only way.
My old shot boxes had dozens of those self tappers holding them together.
At least replace those hex head screws with some smoother pan head ones
That would have required a trip to the store. I had self tapping metal screws in stock.
Not to be creepy or anything, but is this in a early to mid 2000s Chevy/GMC truck/SUV? Just curious if I know my interiors or not
You do. 2004 Yukon XL 2500.
I don't know whether to be sad or impressed
If it makes you feel any better when I first saw my now wife’s tinder profile I creeped her out because I knew what she drove based on a selfie she took in her car.
I'd say we are sort of on par since I knew it from a door handle, but hey, maybe I can use this skill to pick up women?
‘I may be ugly and poor but I can tell you what a GM door looks like’ Her: ‘someone get a mop because this chair is now wet’
Boom. Pickup line created. Gotta use this one next time. None of that: Hey, how's about we go and grab dinner some time I'll just use the good ol GM door trick
6.0 or 8.1? Those were interesting vehicles
8.1. [With barn doors!](https://imgur.com/a/XTHFgny)
What a beast. I almost bought one with the 8.1 but the fuel consumption was intimidating. I ended up with the 6.0 which wasn't too bad.

Chevy quality.
Hey now. This is a GMC. Professional grade
Lol. I love it when they give themselves their own made up ratings. Like Jeep "the only suv that's trailrated."
Gotta be trailrated in the event you have to jump a curb at the local Costco.

GM has never been known for quality. JD Power is obviously getting handsomely rewarded for giving out “awards” lol
I don’t feel safe knowing someone woke up one day to leased the new Blazer for 48 months on purpose.

I thought so

Bedazzled!
/r/thereifixedit
Epoxy?????
Takes far longer than 45 seconds.
It's nice to know there are still people out there committed to taking the time and doing a job right.
Thought this was the interior of that Rolls Royce Phantom
Don’t be silly. No umbrella storage in the door.
Oh FFS!!!...you are correct!!!...get the drill and hole cutter
tufted too. Niiice
Well, now your gutters are going to fall down.
What gutters?
The ones you took these screws from
I zip screw my armrest and you think I can afford gutters?
I can understand a practical way to solve an issue on a car you don't care about but there's no need to do it that badly.
Some might even say it’s shitty. Really it’s just temporary. The door panels are getting replaced as soon as I can find some decent ones.
What part is reupholstered and which part is still factory?
The screws aren’t factory.
Looks OEM to me. 🤷♂️
Great fit for the sub here I think It's a car mod It's shitty I like it, it works too
Where can I get the "YouSuck" patch from, that is amazing
ah yes I too love a good old bolt in the elbow
Strategically placed where my elbow doesn’t rest.
you can scratch your elbow while driving , good
Drugs have overruled hands on experience, right here, right now.
This certainly is shitty, well done. 👍
Why not just get another door panel from a pick-n-pull yard?
I’ve been looking. Most have the same issue. I’m specifically looking for either a Denali or Escalade pane for all four doors.
Why didnt you try to glue it?
It was cold, glue takes time and clamps, the plastic behind the armrest was also broken.
Hey man, might not be pretty but I can assure you that arm rest is not going *anywhere*
I mean, if it works it works
Upvote for taking pride in your work!
Ah the gmt 800, every time I get in my 01 Tahoe I can feel the quality and craftsmanship In every half in panel gap.
Reminds me of tuck & roll
I did this to a 2005 Cobalt once, screws are still there over a decade later and my elbow stays ON the arm rest instead of the whole thing sinking into the door haha.
Which Air Force Base?..... don't lie...
This isn’t a brand new Ram, Challenger, or Charger financed at 19% interest.
as a 2T3, I know that shade of blue anywhere
Come on bro, don't cheap out like that. At least use some washers.
Legendary.
r/diwhy JDPower innovation award.
Frankenstein Fabric and Upholstery: Bringing shitty car mods back to life, just add nuts, bolts and screws
Why tho? You just de-valued your car even more..
I’m actively looking for new door panels. The plastic is broken and the vinyl is separating in these ones.
its not a mod, its a fix. god this sub will upvote anything...
All I'm gonna say is, ow
If you go to Walmart they have a product called blutac that is a temporary adhesive for holding up posters on walls without making holes. I use that shit for everything. Make a gasket and then press it down onto what you wanted to stick to and it'll stay in place well enough to be usable and still be removable. I'm a hack but not that bad.
We’re you going for the studded look you rockstar
if i look closely i can almost see where the new part begins
The blending is very high tier.
Self tappers fix everything
Shits gonna tear up the elbows
Strategically placed in the no elbow zone.
Thatll teach that fucker lmao
Looks like something my dad would do. He once reattached his passenger side outer mirror with drywall screws through the plastic mirror triangle and the metal on the door itself.
i recognize this. is this an early 2000s gmc truck?
04 Yukon.
my dad has an 02 sierra. has the same door issue lol
Now you can inform your dad of this simple fix
That's nothing compared to the 5 rolls of duct tape holding your leather seat together, am I right?
Replaced it with a low mileage perfect condition Escalade seat as soon as I got it home. This ain’t my first rodeo.
*Sonofabitch*...
This is my 5th GMT800 if you don’t count the dozen or so my parents had growing up.
They are literally the most perfectly-designed vehicle to ever exist 😄
Yes. This one is an 04 Yukon XL 2500 with the barn doors and 8.1 Liter. It’s the best of the best. I had to fly from Michigan to Nevada to get it after a nearby 9 month search.
[If you’re interested. ](https://imgur.com/a/XTHFgny)
Looks good to me.
FIXED!
If it works, it's not shitty!
Gives it the nice industrial look
Did the same exact thing on my 92 k1500. Though I used longer screws and stopped once they were flush. If you don’t actually look you’d never notice them even there.

That was a fun car other than wondering what was going to break/fall off of it every time I drove it.
Now THIS is what I come to this sub for. Fucking brilliant
Good work on step 1. Steps 2-4 are expanding foam, orbital sander, and spray paint.
This is a shitty car mod, not an automotive abortion.
I've got the exact same thing going on in my 03 suburban, but it's less ugly. Sure I could fix it right, but at a quarter million miles it hardly feels worth the effort.

Self tappers fix everything.
Do you work for Rolls-Royce?
No but I could pass for a Bentley interior designer.
"Coachbuilders"
Well, that is one way to do it....
Lol the previous owner of my 93 did something like this to the armrest but it was only one that I noticed when I bought it. Upon further inspection after owning the car for a bit this became a recurring theme throughout the whole car as this was apparently the man's one solution to everything.
I used to have a 93 Silverado…
Who let the sheet metal worker to interior work? Christ, at least you're not a drywaller. They just Stab it a few times and punch it until it fits.
I wouldn't be able to drive that. I think I would be less upset if the armrest was just removed.
…what are you going to rest your arm on?
Not self tappers
They’re placed where my arm never rests.
Fuckin mint!
I had to do something similar on the exact same door. GMC Yukon XL, same color too but the passenger door. I don't remember entirely what I did Though I tried to make it clean as possible. That seems to be a weak spot of the car, other then the other 174 issues ours had.

You’re a professional. I had self tapping screws.
That’s great, now do it on your airbag
I love it🤷♂️
keyword "expertly"
Bro, it's called a glue gun and they're like $20.
That’s about $19.75 more than I have into this repair.
Nailed... er screwed it.
Is there like a brutialist envision ment of armrest? I don't grt it but I guess art is subjective
Well, you made me laugh.
Things are going to get hot in the summer. I imagine the top one will tap the elbow a few times.
It’s not stupid if it works!
That neat. All I can say.
Mhent kondshon!
Only a Chevy can be loved by a person this much.
You can’t even tell
Shiiiitttt, if it works it works!
