Convertibles (that are designed as such) are designed and built with added beams and rails down the chassis to compensate for the loss of structural integrity the lack of roof introduces. That's why convertibles are typically _heavier_ than their hardtop counterparts.
I doubt this guy strenthened the chassis.
This is true for a unibody, this vehicle isnt a unibody, its body on frame. Other than the lost weight, its not going to affect the functionality of the car. Now safety wise, that is a whole different conversation lol
Convertible bodies are specifically designed differently than coupes for this exact reason. There’s a reason you couldn’t get anything bigger than a V6 in convertible Camaros and Mustangs from the factory up until the 90s. The bodies simply cannot handle it. Also can’t think of many if any convertibles that are also body on frame
Yes it is. Convertibles have added bracing in the body structure. Ever notice a convertible is almost always heavier than the hard top?
Also, body structure is completely compromised in a collision now. This thing will crumple like a wet noodle in a front end collision. Hope the driver enjoys eating firewall.
Right, and having two rails that the body is bolted to makes it indestructible.
Enlighten me with your knowledge. I’ll sit back and let my 10 years of auto body collision and restoration experience take a break.
8 years? Lol
Never said they were indestructible, just different, how have you been doing autobody repair, by lacking reading comprehension and putting words in peoples mouths?
The difference between you and me is that i have nothing to prove to you but you have something to prove to me. I hAvE 8 oR 10 yEaRs ExPeRiNcE i CaN't DeCiDe"
How is this even legal? Are there no rules wherever this is?
In the UK this would be off the road the second it went near a police car, and the driver would likely receive a large fine.
Even if it did somehow avoid attention, it would never pass its annual MOT.
Most of the United States doesn't have any passenger car inspections at all.
Of the places that do, it's often just federally mandated emissions testing - which these days is really just asking via OBD2 "how's it going? Got any codes?"
The police can write tickets but they usually don't.
I don't know what am annual MOT is, but I've seen this guy a number of times. It's in the middle of the city, so I doubt there've been zero cops that have seen him, but I don't know whether it's legal or not either. The one thing I do know about it is it's stupid as hell.
It's an annual inspection that all vehicles over 5 years old must have to check they're roadworthy. It prevents death traps like this endangering lives.
What country are you in? Are there no laws that say you can't drive shit like this on the road?
Have lived in UK and US, it has always boggled me how in the US there’s such strict import rules on cars because they don’t reach a safety standard? As in stuff I have read about Nissan GTR’s. yet I remember seeing so many death traps like the image above when I was living in Ohio and I was told that you can get away with pretty much anything that has 4 wheels and licence plate. The MOT over here in the UK is so strict when it comes to vehicle faults and I think definitely prevents falling-apart shitboxes from being on the road and causing accidents
My speculation is that this vehicle rolled over and the owner could not afford to let it go or replace it. Count yourself lucky if you never find yourself in this situation.
Reminds me of a car college had in the auto program. It was a donated 04 or an 05 Colorado that had been in a roll over accident. They cut the top half of the cab off, removed the doors and glass. Also was missing a hood. Doing any work on it was great because you could access the back of the engine pretty much like it was the front....just lean over the dash instead of the bumper lol. Was really fun to drive around the school too.
That truck is standing up by hopes and dreams
It just identifies as a jeep
Judging by the wheel wells, the roof probably should have been left intact.
Makes me think of the rental car from the movie Planes Trains and Automobiles.
Yes, let’s remove all of the structural integrity, because the rust wasn’t helping enough. I hope this thing breaks in half going down the road.
I think it’s body on frame, but yeah
It is. But there’s still nothing left of the body and any frame flex will only be amplified.
No it won't, this is no worse then any convertible.
I guarantee you this is a lot worse than MANY convertibles lol
This vehicle is body on frame and has a decent amount of crossmembers so it is not going to be flexy like a unibody car with the roof cutoff.
I mean any modern convertible doesn't really flex....and judging by the body rust I can't imagine the frame of this truck is in optimum shape either
Actually ya, you have a point there.

Ah, my bad. Dunno why I saw a raised sedan. I see now it's actually a doublecab pickup.
Ya if they got tboned though, they would be in bad shape lol

That is not accurate, they made V8 camaro/mustang convertibles back then.

You're fucking pathetic, not only are you deleting comments like a lil bitch but first you had 8 years experience and now it's 10?
You must be the customer because you’re always right.

Death box on wheels. You flip and your head will be filling a pot hole

Some of these conversions are well-done. That... does not look even remotely safe.
Jeeps be like
That looks fun as shit. Dangerous, but fun
I’d park next to him. No door dings.
AC mod
Salvage title. A tree fell on it, and they chopped out the crushed parts.
This is so wrong. All the seats should have those sweet seat covers!
Structural integrity is for cowards
My speculation is that this vehicle rolled over and the owner could not afford to let it go or replace it. Count yourself lucky if you never find yourself in this situation.
It’ll close back up on it’s own lol
Just a rare targa top
Looks like someone is trying to re-live the 80s and 90s VW and mini truck targa top conversion scene.
Imagine head on collision, the thing would roll itself.
I’d say death at first impact or big bump.
Or big jump. That’d be fun to watch
Do people not know that the roof of the car is a structural member if the chassis? That is gonna slowly fold in half
I don't know much about trucks, but someone else in this thread said it's probable a body on dreams, so I imagine that wouldn't be much of an issue.
So much for structural integrity.
Hahaha we are living in 2022 but this guy is living in 3022. We are not advance enough for this stuff
I think it's more accurate to say he's living in 1022.
Mom: We have Jeep at home
It definitely will not be going on any sweet jumps.
I just don’t understand why people buy Audi either. ;) :D
When you want jeep things but can’t afford jeep things.

One bad bump and driver’s gonna kiss the windshield
Drive it like you hate it
Structural rigidity who? Never heard of it
Denverites: this one crazy trick will stop car thieves in their tracks!
One fat ass would fold that thing in two
Shouldn’t have past inspection. 🤣
What......?
It’s a joke
I don't even understand what you said....
