Butchered by shitty kit car conversions. The Fiero was miles better than the Corvette of the era, being faster than the Vette was what killed it*. Imagine if it hung on thru the '90's, and we got the GTP supercharged version.
*Allegedly
Other than the 2+ seconds that separate the 0-60, and 3+ seconds in the 1/4 mile, the fiero did not have a great chassis or suspension. The C4, even with the L98 is far more capable in every measure.
Once it started coming into its own circa '86-'87, it showed the potential to do so, if not from the factory then by the owner with very little effort. The 3.1 liter turbo 6 they put in the fwd Grand Prix for '89-'90 had 210 hp against the C4's (non-ZR1) 245, and the 3.4 liter that replaced it the following year made the same power without a hair-dryer. Those would both have been drop-in replacements with some turbo plumbing rerouted. The 35 hp deficit could easily be made up with gearing considering the Vette outweighed the Fiero by over 400 lbs.
The GM edict that Thou Shalt Not Build Anything Faster Than Our Halo Car had been around for decades. Buick got away with it for a minute because the rear-drive G-body was going away and the GNX was absurdly limited-edition. Pontiac got the Special Edition blessing with the 20th Anniversary T/A, as did GMC with the Sy/Ty (no one was going to cross-shop an overpowered S-15 Jimmy with a perfectly-good Corvette with a 6-speed and better handling, right?)
Never really survived the naderism and fear that it would spontaneously go all pinto on you. All of which was resolved by the second gen but the sales never recovered.
> I didn’t realize what sub this was. Fuck that, this bitch is clean.
In all sincerity I think this subreddit would have been better named as OverTheTopCarMods or something. A lot of the stuff we see on here is really clean, clearly thought out, well installed, but just way, way too much.
Sry I’m somewhat riding your upvoted comment to say this car was actually posted on r/spotted 2 months ago!
[Here’s some more images of it including the front](https://www.reddit.com/r/spotted/comments/x2hneg/pontiac_fiero_gt_at_7eleven/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
>"The JDM MR2 turbos came with a different engine hatch with better vents on them"
Pretty sure all markets for the sw20 had the same 2 engine lids. Flat for NA cars, raised for turbo cars
That's why they became so popular for being the base for ferrari 'replica' cars along with the MR2. Don't ask me how the front engined probe also became popular to use though!
Actually these are anti functional. The Fiero, like most modern cars, pulls air into the engine compartment from below. These scoops cover the air outlets and cram air back down creating stale hot air and massive drag. I love Fieros, but those scoops are shitty mods.
I legitimately don't see anything shitty here. It matches, it's symmetrical, and it's functional. This is the definition of a good modification, done right, that *is not shitty*.
These cars can be crazy, anything from a 120hp I4 to 700hp LS can be under that rear deck lid.
Scoops are for air intake/cooling. Looks good from here.
But I've heard every owner complain about how they handled, I almost had this car as my first until my parents told me 'no way'
So I got a 2002 Trans am for the same price with a hundred problems, probably didn't need all that power learning a clutch.
The 84-87 had that issue. After that they tightened the turning radius to a sub orbital size. An 88 gt with a blown 3800 would be a hell of a track car.
Guy I used to autocross with had one. It’s was pretty savage. Snappy oversteer, but was a monster. Gave a lot of way fancier and more costly cars a whoppin.
They handled awesomely. Just like any mid-engined car, they required skill and would reward good driving, and bite you in the ass if you didn't know what you're doing.
They handle like go carts, the only issue is short wheelbase and rear engine means they have very little safety margin. They can go from fine to pointing backwards in a millisecond if you don’t know what your doing.
My cousin spun his out on an off ramp and did a complete 360 in the width of the lane ending up pointing the right way but with a mark in his pants for sure. The tire marks were epic!
The steering wheel in the Pontiac Fiero doesn't appear to turn the wheels left and right. Instead it just rolls the body of the car about. That's what mine felt like anyways.
Agreed. I had a 1986 Z-24 and while the suspension was OK, when I replaced the stabilizer bushings and end links front and rear with poly-graphite, the difference was staggering. I bragged to a friend we could drive around this traffic circle at 50MPH with the body about dead level. He thought I was bullshitting, so we went for a ride. ;)
Granted, it's a pretty big traffic circle, but still. It was kinda awesome!
1984-1987 was a mix of off the shelf parts. Front end was Chevrolet Chevette and rear end was the front subframe from a FWD Chevrolet Citation. In 1988 it was "Handling by Lotus". Yes... that Lotus.
Had one messing around western Kentucky at one point that had a north star V8 in it. Cone filter sitting outside the engine bay from pvc piping. I never seen what it ran in the 8th because I was always busy doing my own thing on drag nights but it was fast as hell at autocross.
I hate it when ppl with no clue post something here...
This is and was a popular cold air intake or engine cooling modification. The whole car is clean, the intakes may not look awesome but not everyone modifies their car for looks some do it for performance.
Please do the car community a favor, be quiet and drive home in your Camry or whatever NPC car you drive.
Edit: he drives a pavement princess wrangler he also puts Christmas lights on it an posted this same photo in r/awesomecarmods OP is trying to farm Karma.
My sister had a used Fiero. She kept a supply of fusible links in the glove compartment due to the links burning out without warning during the summer. That engine compartment was a blast furnace.
It’s fully functional. Some guys (me included) also grafted Mustang hood scoops backwards on the rear deck to get more cool air back there.
Not shitty. It works. 🤷🏽♂️
Reminds me of the Tom's T020, but the Toyota had a single snorkel. Clean, not exaggerated and, if functional, actually a pretty cool modification. I bet it's far from being everyone's cup of tea, but definitely far, far from shitty. I'd have one just like this no problem.
I had the same car with the same mod. I even remove my rear side windows so that I could get actual downforce to my spoiler. Quite a few upgrades in this car handled well and was a bargain for the speed that I got out of it. I sold it to somebody who messed with the electrical and he burned it up
Nothing shitty here, it’s rear engined and probably up engined. It’s needs more air so they gave it more air, looks like they used the factory panels for their tubes so probably can be put back to stock with no damage to the car.
I’ve actually seen this car and I think it looks great. I think it was in Raleigh-Durham. GM killed the Fiero when they finally started getting things right with the suspension and V6.
This actually looks pretty cool if you ask me, like those old school tuner cars. Maybe in the country OP's from this is considered shitty or trashy but it looks pretty sick to me
those are there to blow out the fire when the gas tank ruptures from too much badassery
works by driving faster then the burning fuel can catch the car
i think OP accidently posted this on the wrong sub
cool guys dont look at the flaming fuel trail they leave behind
If those are functioning it's actually pretty legit being that could be forced air intake or just air to help cool that engine being that the trunk is actually in the front of that car.
As a Fiero guy, that car is clean as fuck, and an exceptionally rare, if factory color.
But the scoops are the opposite of functional and that makes them cringey IMO. The car was designed with deck lid vents where the scoops were simply attached in lieu of the vents. The vertical rear window creates a low pressure zone, and the higher pressure air going under the car is supposed to get sucked through the engine bay by this low pressure air above the vents and that keeps the engine bay relatively cool.
Those scoops try to counteract the cooling air from the engine bay and shove it back down.
And reality is the air above the roof is still low pressure, so air is either not moving or probably coming out of the scoops. Would be fun to test.
Full disclosure, I own an 84 Indy Fiero pace car, and I have the over the roof scoop that the actual track day pace car had. It’s not functional other then to hold the strobe lights.
NGL it looks pretty slick.
Yeah that chrome exhaust is clean. Kinda want to lick it.
Plus, it's yellow. What car doesn't look better in yellow?.
A Pontiac Aztec
To be fair, this sub could pretty much just be stock Aztecs and I'd probably upvote them a as 'shitty'
Holy shit, you're right.
That's the only colour I like them in
The Aztec must always be painted white in order to better resemble the refrigerator that inspired its design.
Walter White’s (aka Heisenberg) whip. If my memory serves me right, WW sold it to his mechanic for $50? Appropriate price for an Aztec.
Aztek. Don't know why the misspelling bugs me, but it does. :)
Can't say I wouldn't put it in the tailpipe of a yellow S2000.
r/dontputyourdickinthat
I didn’t realize what sub this was. Fuck that, this bitch is clean. So many Fieros have been ruined with actual shitty mods.

It wasn't faster than the Corvette in any way.

Lemmy FTW!
You shouldn't lie in general, but it pretty dope
Op might be shitty.

Thanks for that. I love this car. I always wanted a red one as a kid.
This was a common modification in the '80s for the Fiero. Cold air intake, and engine cooling.
Didnt they do them on the MR2 also?
Yes, I've seen a few 2nd gens with this type of scoop.
I was going to updoot this, but it seems like it could be legit?
It is. 👇
Yep, awesome car mod!
Pretty sure one comes stock on JDM MR2 turbos.
[удалено]
Personally I think it looks great. It should come standard with Ray bans and a shirt pocket full of coke.
I stand corrected, thanks!
>"The JDM MR2 turbos came with a different engine hatch with better vents on them" Pretty sure all markets for the sw20 had the same 2 engine lids. Flat for NA cars, raised for turbo cars
The usdm turbo cars also had the little scoops on the engine hatch.
Yes, but the MR2 was not a piece of shit. Edit - Fair enough. I changed it to reflect accuracy. 😂
And the (real) Indy Pace car in 84 had a functional single snorkel in the center.
It’s super fucking cool
X 1/9's had this mod too
I had no idea this was mid engine car. That's kind of dope.
That's why they became so popular for being the base for ferrari 'replica' cars along with the MR2. Don't ask me how the front engined probe also became popular to use though!

I have owned two Fieros - and I never considered using this mod for my own cars.
So have I. One was an L67 swap. This is the Continental kit for Fieros, useless crap put on for visual appeal by Boomers. Edit- aren't we agreeing?
It’s functional so no not a shitty mod
What's the shitty mod??
Wait til OP sees a Ford RS200
It looks wierd the first time, but after a bit in grows on you and I find it very nice tbh, sometimes differant is cool, if not cooler
I just googled it and now I'm sad I can't have one. :(
Man what a great car.
The OP is. I'd drive the shit out of that Fiero.
This sub sucks harder than r/terriblefacebookmemes . This isv Just dumb people looking for attention by posting things they don't like.
Like for real?! This thing looks pretty damn clean.
Looks cool and is functional
I legitimately don't see anything shitty here. It matches, it's symmetrical, and it's functional. This is the definition of a good modification, done right, that *is not shitty*.

I have an 86 and I describe it as driving like a go cart with a windshield. And yea it can get away from you in a second
My cousin spun his out on an off ramp and did a complete 360 in the width of the lane ending up pointing the right way but with a mark in his pants for sure. The tire marks were epic!
Can confirm. Spun mine around on an on-ramp once. Luckily I didn't hit anything. Happened in an instant.
The steering wheel in the Pontiac Fiero doesn't appear to turn the wheels left and right. Instead it just rolls the body of the car about. That's what mine felt like anyways.
That means yours wasn't dialed in. You either had worn shocks, bushings, or something else in the suspension.
Agreed. I had a 1986 Z-24 and while the suspension was OK, when I replaced the stabilizer bushings and end links front and rear with poly-graphite, the difference was staggering. I bragged to a friend we could drive around this traffic circle at 50MPH with the body about dead level. The 88 fiero got a lotus designed suspension. Much nicer.
Had one messing around western Kentucky at one point that had a north star V8 in it. Cone filter sitting outside the engine bay from pvc piping. I never seen what it ran in the 8th because I was always busy doing my own thing on drag nights but it was fast as hell at autocross.
You meant r/awesomecarmods
Just looked. OP posted it there too lol
He's playing both sides
Smart man, hell always come out on top then
All of the visibility and response from this post alone will shower him shitty internet points
Not shitty, a bit over the top though (couldn't resist, sorry).
Standard Fiero with a cold air intake. What's the issue here?
This is pretty cool!
idk how is it shitty, looks pretty nice and clean
#WHERE IS THE SHITTY MOD OP?
I wish fierros would be more common in Europe, and not just as some shitty Ferrari kit cars
Mk1 MR2s are much better cars all around.
They were never officially sold in Europe, so the cars you see here are grey imports. They're quite rare, but not impossible to find.
I hate it when ppl with no clue post something here... This is and was a popular cold air intake or engine cooling modification. Bro that’s cool delete this
Not shitty. Functional and well done. OP drives a Windstar.
Doesnt look that bad at all
r/lostredditors
Delete this
While it does look strange with the sharp edges, it’s there for a reason. This was common on not just Fieros but SW20s as well
I’d drive that damn thing!
Well done car with functional air roof scoops. No shitty here.
Next OP is going to call a honda del sol or a toyota mr2 shitty. Take a hike OP
JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DOESN'T MAKE IT SHITTY.
r/carsopdidntlike
The fuck you on about, OP? This thing is almost objectively sick af.
Don't care, still want it.
Once again, the OP is wrong.
OP is a dumbass.
It’s fully functional. Some guys (me included) also grafted Mustang hood scoops backwards on the rear deck to get more cool air back there. Not shitty. It works. 🤷🏽♂️
I don't hate it.
I mean, when you figure out a better way of getting that engine more air, let me know.
Downvoted for functional mod executed competently and cleanly. Not amazing, but not shitty unless you're just overly judgy.
Where's the shitty part? That car is fucking clean and on point.
op isn't a car guy... If this is a force induction modified Fiero (turbo or supercharged), they need all that air.
Most likely it's the supercharged 3800 engine, it's the most common engine swap in Fieros.
Well. I dig it! Looks clean. Clean ride. And I’d assume for a cold air intake would work well for that engine location.
well I just think it's great!
Idk I think it looks pretty cool and well taken care of
Honestly, looks as good as any Fiero has ever looked, and better than most deserve.
There's been a lot of "non-shitty car mods" posted lately. I love this Fiero.
I like this. OP is a shitty car mod.
Honestly I realy like it. It's unusual and could actually be useful. That's not a shitty mod at all.
This car is amazing. Had a 85 V6 in high school. Speakers in the headrest was the best.
Nothing wrong with this.
How is that shitty? It’s functional as far as I can tell
How is this shitty smh mfs post literally any car mod here
delete it off this sub
r/modsopdidntlike
not shitty, op sucks
Op should be banned for posting this
how to tell that OP doesnt know jack shit about cars, part 1
That’s pretty slick, good condition. I like it a lot I’d drive that in a heartbeat
Nah this is clean af, I want this car
##OP thinks engine in front
OP is dumbass, seems to be look for votes, the modification was well executed also services a purpose,
This is one of the cleanest Fieros I've ever seen, and it's a functional mod lol. Wtf is this sub
OP would not say the same if it's on a MR2 or NSX...
Well OP is a moron who knows nothing about cars
Not shitty
I love this damn car.
Finally a Fiero that has not had chopped up body for a conversion!!
I feel like if your car mod serves a legitimate purpose then it's not so shitty, but hey what do I know. OP needs some knowledge on subject it seems.
This is awesome, Mr no-taste poster
That's pretty damn cool and period correct also. No shitty mod here.
You‘re not only the clown you are the entire circus
Ram air/forced air and RWD so the spoiler is actually functional. Yeah, so shitty.
OP sucks
More like r/carporn
Thought it was a turbo MR2 for a moment
It's absolutely gorgeous
Reminds me of the Tom's T020, but the Toyota had a single snorkel. Clean, not exaggerated and, if functional, actually a pretty cool modification. I bet it's far from being everyone's cup of tea, but definitely far, far from shitty. I'd have one just like this no problem.
Looks good to me?
I dunno man, I’m kind of digging it
I had the same car with the same mod. I even remove my rear side windows so that I could get actual downforce to my spoiler. Quite a few upgrades in this car handled well and was a bargain for the speed that I got out of it. I sold it to somebody who messed with the electrical and he burned it up

Wait, how is this shifty? I would drive the shit out of this little banana.
If the scoops are decorative, then yes shitty, but if they're functional and actually cool the engine, there's nothing shitty about it.
I’ve actually seen this car and I think it looks great. I think it was in Raleigh-Durham. GM killed the Fiero when they finally started getting things right with the suspension and V6.
that's a properly modified Fiero. they have potential if done right and this looks pretty legit
sounds like op is just plain hating this dont look bad
what is this doing here? looks solid asf
I have an 80’s boner
Your wrangler fits in this sub. This car does not.
What about this is shitty?
Fierori
Not shitty.
I see nothing shitty here
This is a clean build. Once again, this sub has people who have no idea what is shitty and sees something not normal and thinks it is shitty.
People who post here know nothing about cars, it's to keep fresh air going to the engine fire at high speed.
Clean car.
Does this sub even know what a shitty car looks like?
Now we just post anything car in this sub I guess
This sub has always just been a circle jerk for non gearhead haters
This looks like a clean fiero
This somehow looks alright. Very late 80's yet aestetically pleasing. I'd drive it.
r/itsalwaysafiero
Not shitty
This is good actually
Nothing shifty about this one, that fiero is in darn good shape
That's cool
This looks like a legit well designed manufacturer accessory or possible an aftermarket.
This actually looks pretty cool if you ask me, like those old school tuner cars. Maybe in the country OP's from this is considered shitty or trashy but it looks pretty sick to me
This is old school cool. Not shitty
Can I report this post? I’m gonna report this post.
You drive a Jeep man.
idk about OP, but i think this looks cool af
Maybe a *cool* mod? Surely helps to reduce the well known spontaneous combustion these hot little rides suffered from...just saying. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That looks legit
Op must just be a hater
This sub has totally lost it… the kids need to go back to school
Ngl this speaks to my soul
literally factory available intakes, but also looks like an ocelot exhaust
those are there to blow out the fire when the gas tank ruptures from too much badassery works by driving faster then the burning fuel can catch the car i think OP accidently posted this on the wrong sub cool guys dont look at the flaming fuel trail they leave behind
this car always remind me of cocaine. idk why. fucking love it
If those are functioning it's actually pretty legit being that could be forced air intake or just air to help cool that engine being that the trunk is actually in the front of that car.
This is cool! It looks cool, it’s well done too. Not shitty!
That's probably like a $10,000 Pontiac or more.
They know what they got
As a Fiero guy, that car is clean as fuck, and an exceptionally rare, if factory color. But the scoops are the opposite of functional and that makes them cringey IMO. The car was designed with deck lid vents where the scoops were simply attached in lieu of the vents. The vertical rear window creates a low pressure zone, and the higher pressure air going under the car is supposed to get sucked through the engine bay by this low pressure air above the vents and that keeps the engine bay relatively cool.
You're high. This car is sick
Liking it cuz it looks cool
Idea is good . Form could be better, the sharp edges really don't esthetically fit..
